Theseus

EDIT: I first sampled this in atarilynx's Blind Sampling Event in 2018 and really liked it -- while it wasn't a "love at first sniff" it really grew on me until I came to the conclusion that it was either a Masterpiece of perfumery, or just happened to be perfectly suited for me, or both. I'd been limiting myself to bottles I could find 2nd-hand for $40 or less, but Theseus ended up becoming my first Niche bottle when atarilynx kindly sold me his for a great price. And guess what? I never got bored with it :-) In fact, I just bought my 2nd full bottle of Theseus as a Christmas present to myself here in 2022 -- what else do you need to know ?! My 2nd bottle came brand-new but the juice is a bit darker in color than my 1st one was. I notice the black pepper a bit more than I did before and it seems like it might be a little stronger than my last bottle, otherwise they smell identical to my nose. Initial Revew: I got a “warm candle wax” feeling from this upon first sniff, which might sound strange, but is actually nice and comforting. After a couple more wears, I can pick out the citrus, but can still smell something waxy or creamy. So if I were to rename this for the way it makes me feel, I'd call it Daedalus, after the mythical Greek who invented wings made from wax and feathers that allowed him to fly high into the sky -- only in this story, his son Icarus listens to him instead of ignoring his advice not to fly too close to the sun like he does in the original version. I agree with the other commenters who say there’s something sunny and optimistic about this. If it were a color, it would be yellow-orange. I agree with atarilynx who says this is similar to Terre d'Hermes, but it's different enough that you could own both. Actually, Theseus might be more versatile than TDH EDT since it smells a bit "deeper" and may be better suited for cooler weather. Initial impression: a really pleasant 4/5 Final impression: 4.5/5 or better

This is a great fragrance, centered on a citrusy clary sage, vetiver, green notes, clean musk and spices (mostly nutmeg). It's masterfully blended, and transitions are very smooth. The opening is a very herbal green kept fresh by a the citruses (that will stay until the base), the heart is about clary sage and a strong nutmeg with a subtle floral support, that will overall give an impression of celery. Then, in the base, a citrusy/rooty vetiver awakes and shines, supported by tonka, patchouli and woody notes, with a beautiful green bitterness in the late drydown (birch tar/leather?), reminding me of the green tobacco leaf drydown of Monsillage Aviation Club (but slightly less bitter). This frag will keep a strong soapy/powdery note (musk and iris maybe?) from top to base, making unisex (maybe slightly masculine). I strongly suggest to try it on skin, since on paper it seems to be a very fresh woody masculine frag, and will not develop its powdery/floral unisex side. Nothing in common with TdH, ELdO Fat E. or Dior ES Parfum, except for the presence of vetiver (but then it is similar to other 1000 frags). On my skin, performance is good, with a moderate/good projection, and great longevity. Quite unique, one of the best green frags around imo. Now on my to-buy list. Best on Spring days, women 20+, men 30+ Edit: I now got it, and don't know why I waited so long to buy it! Simply beautiful.

I’m still new to this fragrance game, and I’m fascinated by the impact of mood and weather on how I experience these concoctions. Yesterday, for example, I put on a fragrance that I know, intellectually, is beautiful and unique, but it was exactly wrong for the way I was feeling and I couldn’t wait for it to fade. Today, on the other hand, I hit it right with Theseus. Maybe it’s the weather here in New York – we’re in the transition between winter and a still-reluctant spring, and Theseus glows with the promise of the light and warmth just around the corner. I’m not good at pulling apart individual elements (except for the vetiver that gets more prominent as Theseus dries down) but this exquisite blend somehow marries outdoors and indoors -- a grassy field by the road in Tuscany and an evening at La Scala. I’m looking forward to checking out the perfumer’s shop when I’m in Firenze in May to see if there are any other Villoresi masterpieces that call my name.

Theseus from Villoresi is one of my earlier loves, and a new purchase. A real moodlifter fragrance to me. Feels smooth, raw, and vivid equally. A Lot of spicy, floral and earthy notes blended in a well rounded composition. I get juicy citrus in the top, similar to Eau Sauvage, I get brownish spices, vetiver and leather, something like Bel Ami Vetiver and I get a beautiful floral-ambery base which feels like a luxury Versace Dreamer. A clean, white, marble fountain with green leaves and flowers could smell the same in my imagination. I also like the good longevity in this one.

I’ve had the edp for years and it’s taken forever for me to review. It’s a masculine-leaning aromatic fragrance with vetiver, lots of citrus that is grapefruit-like, and maybe I’m getting the clary sage as it smells a bit like lavender. It is sort of a barbershop type fragrance, but to me it wears more androgynous than many in this category. Very pleasant and well-balanced, I find it enjoyable in warmer weather.

Lorenzo Viloresi Theseus it starts very similar to Terre Hermes EDT by very vetiver citrusy notes but it changes the direction to woody and green scent still dominating the vetiver note niche the quality is there for sure. it's deep and rich. performance is really good considering its EDT. I got compliment the first day I used it. Scent 9/10 Longevity 8.5/10 Sillage 8.5/10 Price worthy 7.5/10

I am big fan of his perfumes. There is so much range and I love this smell, is different. I like to wear in the morning when I go to work. The citrus smell is soft and it reminds me of a morning after the rain, it has a moss combination.It is unique and beautiful.

Really nice fragrance, for me is summer in a bottle, just bought a full bottle of it after sampling, very nice one my score: 8.0/10

Wow...first impressions: I received this after waiting the typical 2 weeks ordering from fragrancenet.com I had a cold, and couldn't smell much. As my sense of smell has been returning, I first got a vibe of the nutmeg to where this smelled like Lalique Equus. But after washing it off my hand (or so I thought), I'm getting a nice citrus vibe today at work that doesn't seem to go away. More later once I return to my senses. Update: I still get a nice spicy woods ala Lalique Equus, but that is paired with an equally pronounced citrusy +vetiver. Very nice...I don't get comparisons with Terre d'Hermes, but this is a very good scent. And longevity is quite good...I can smell it on my skin after an 8 hour workday. It has average projection for about 2-3 hours. EDIT: After spending much more time with this, I am really liking it. In fact, I think it does have some similarities to Terre d'Hermes...the Eau Intense Vetiver. In fact, I think that Theseus SHOULD have been the flanker. Instead of the kind of bland and simple vetiver presentation in TdH EIV, Theseus has a nice balanced, vetiver/citrus with the nutmeg in the background. I'm loving this more and more, and I actually think LV Theseus should be required "smelling" for fans of Terre d'Hermes.

Theseus is clearly the starting point from which Lorenzo Villoresi developed his fragrance *Forever Now* for the Gucci Museo. It strikes as a woody aromatic composition with a remarkable green / herbal element and subtle / undefined floral patterns. Fresh and spicy, perfectly unisex, very easy to like, not overly complicated and with a decent lasting power. Personally I'm not excited but I can see this becoming a great all-rounder for anyone looking for an easy-wear which takes the distance from the sticky sportsy fragrances available on the market. I'll stick to *Forever Now* which I find overall more refined, more vetiver prominent (which is always a plus in my book) and with nicer spicy-floral patterns. Rating: 7/10

THESEUS is a perfect "sunshine in bottle" fragrance. Based on the notes I did not expect what I got at all. First - this is VERY aromatic, but underneath the herbal and aromatic opening notes there is something that smells like pure bliss - sunshine, sunkissed skin, warmth, happiness. For this cold weather outside I could not be happier to try this. Unlike others stated - this actually had a very nice longevity - 7 and more hours, though it did stay very close to skin. THESEUS is completely unisex, it has this warm, sweet vibe, but it's also very aromatic and herbal. Nor too masculine, nor feminine. A really good choice. A must try for sure!

I really like this fragrance, and doesn't understand why others smell it synthetic. I think it is absolutely not synthetic, (as Villoresi does not have any synthetic parfums I think), so this is a very sophisticated, rather masculin scent. Maybe confident woman can wear it.

Lorenzo Villoresi loves to take you on a journey and Theseus doesn't disappoint, opening with aromatic sage supported by vetiver and patchouli. There's some graininess at the centre, tonka is listed but it could equally be the dryness of nutmeg. And there's some woodiness — possibly the lightest hint of oud. And then the powderiness sweeps in. Iris and musk, adding an unexpectedly perfumey twist, puffing things up and wrong-footing you because it's the vetiver that is quietly building in strength to become dominant and distinct. It's sharp, peppery, a little sour, at the citrus end of the vetiver spectrum. A smooth, chalky quality to it. It's not my usual style of vetiver, and it made me run to sniff the others in my collection. The soft, woody florals continue bubbling under — iris, jasmine, patchouli — very distinctive when I compare Theseus to other, stricter vetivers. It dries soapier, in the direction of (but not like) Guerlain Vetiver . The powderiness of the iris and musk slowly subsiding as the vetiver and nutmeg soldier on over a low-key amberiness. I'm not won over by the powder here, it gives Theseus an old-fashioned, off-beat feeling, but vetiver lovers who are open to those notes should definitely give this one a whirl.

I'm a big fan of Villoresi's creations, but this one just doesn't sit well with me. I feel that there is a lack of direction. The beginning has a really beautiful bergamot note, but then it doesn't really develop. It becomes soapy and that's it. The vetiver note seems in opposition with the rest, rather than a part of a whole. Average performance.

Theseus is a fresh, summery, mildly citrus, vetiver scent that leans masculine to me. I can easily detect the sweetness of the amber base. Vaguely reminiscent of men's deodorant. Reminds me of how my father smelled after showering, but oddly it's not sentimental. Not particularly unique or worth a purchase.

On paper: The floral notes seem to cling to the patchouly and are still present in the drydown. A bit too much for me. On skin: Sweet vetiver floral soapy musk, not for me.

A marvelously round composition that can only come from masterful blending, Villoresi's Theseus is his opus of sorts, a culmination of his ability to congregate dense elements into an expansive and cohesive whole, with fluid development. He can combine disparate elements into a harmonious whole with aplomb. Theseus brings out the greenest, lushest elements out of both the mercurial clary sage and temperamental vetiver, with Villoresi's signature inclusion of spices (here it is nutmeg and pepper) that elevate the greenness and add a thoughtful contrast. A suggestion of iris, with its cooler, more aloof nature, pulls Theseus in a direction where it is adjacent to brightness rather than in full light; an aromatic glow rather than a sunbeam, as it were. There are no brazen woody ambers in this dry down, which brings me much relief. It is all lower velocity vetiver, woods, musks, labdanum, and Bel Ami-esque hint of leather, with lingering projection. This would be a comfortable, welcoming wear no matter what the season or occasion. Bravo, Signore Villoresi!
