Au Hasard

This is the masterpiece of the men's line thus far. I have never smelled any fragrance like this before. Amazingly, I can pick up on every single note that Louis Vuitton lists. It's piercing and clean, but it also has a creaminess undergirding it. You probably think you know how that smells, but you really don't in this case. Most piercing and clean fragrances that pack a punch employ oud or vetiver; I'm talking about familiar greats such as Acqua di Parma Colonia Oud and Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EDP. But this fragrance has neither oud nor vetiver. Instead, it's piercing cleanliness comes from a combination of petitgrain, ambrette, and sour yet tamed sandalwood. Cardamom provides the beautiful creaminess in the background that helps to tame the sandalwood, and a clean musk can definitely be sensed once this starts to become a skin scent. This fragrance is absolutely, unquestionably beastly in both performance and longevity, yet it can also easily be worn on the hottest days of summer if you control your sprays. In fact, I think that this scent is more suited to warmer weather than it is to the cold, just like the Acqua di Parma and Tom Ford I mentioned earlier. I keep on bringing up the AdP and Tom Ford because this fragrance seems to be in the same category as them, yet it stands head and shoulders above them due to its incredible uniqueness and modernity. The AdP could be seen as too polarizing and foreign to average noses, the Tom Ford may make you smell like an old man in some people's opinions, but the Louis Vuitton has only garnered me incredibly positive feedback even from the most average and inexperienced noses. I knew I had to buy a bottle of this office-appropriate, year-round masterpiece as soon as I tried it on my skin. It transforms seemingly every few minutes and makes you smell like a modern maverick, a sophisticated and down to earth man of prestige, and a highly respected expert in whatever field you specialize in. I will never tire of it. It is a fragrance for life. PS, the packaging alone is incredible and something to truly appreciate and behold, at least if you buy a bottle on LV's website. I do not know what the in-store packaging entails

It was my first choice from the men line along with Nouvea Monde. There some fragrance a they smell like perfume but there some they smell like your second skin or let’s say your skin smells like that. Au Hasard is one of them. It is centered on sandalwood surrounded by cardamom and green notes along with musk. It is very good sandalwood based fragrance and I was thinking Tam Dao (EDP) and Amouage Honour was the best sandalwood based fragrances but this is way beyond them. Regarding the scent it is soft skin scent with very elegant touch. First soft musky airy and very subtle sweetness welcomes you and after that cardamom starts the show by giving fresh but not allowing muskiness to go away it continues like that until it leave the skin. For it is 100% Niche fragrance and it is extremely unique and I want everyone to associate me with this scent. The person wears this must solve all questions and hesitations within him/her (yes I think it is unisex). This can be worn perfectly buy a person who doesn’t like show off but know what to do and how to do in life. Performance wise I got 8 hours longevity which I found not enough (I wish it was longevity monster) for the price and regarding projection this is not a show off scent so projection is just perfect ( very well felt during close encounters) according to me 8.5/10

Alright. I blind purchased this based on notes from the site. I am no expert, just an idiot with a wallet. After receiving in the mail, I could tell from first spray that I loved this fragrance. Powdery and musky definitely line up. Au Hasard and Paco Rabanne million gold are in my top 2 most used fragrances, and they both have sandalwood in them (which may have something to do with it). Let me say that the sandalwood in this fragrance is definitely more tame, with the pear note coming in/covering it more. I just love this personally. It is not strong as the 1 Million, and really should not be compared with it outside of the small sandalwood similarities. I am okay with thinking I am noseblind to this one. I can smell it on clothes days later, but when wearing on skin it just kind of blends in. I am open to people not liking this, because I get it, but I will stand on my opinion that this is truly a unisex scent (which I don't say often). I think all fragrances should have some sort of consideration as a room spray, and this fits the bill too. It's great, and I may have to get another bottle since it is discontinued now.

i’m surprised people don’t like this as much as i do. “au hasard” can loosely be translated to “at random” or “randomly” which i think is a good way to describe this fragrance. it’s really just a bunch of random notes thrown together to create a pleasant, sort of clean, musky scent. i wouldn’t say it *smells* like santal 33, but the heavy emphasis on musk and leather is very le labo-esque. if you do like le labo, you’ll definitely like this as it’s a cleaner, more mass-appealing take on le labo’s style. perhaps a little overpriced, but there’s not really anything else like it so i’ll probably buy a full bottle in the future. it’s a really solid choice for an everyday office scent imo

Love this scent. Smells fantastic and unique. Super clean, fresh and spicy, it's really powdery and leathery with a citrus touch and i do pick up the pear and definitely the musks once it reaches the dry down. Performance is great with strong projection, i get around 10 hours of longevity. This does share similarities to Santal 33 By Le Labo but i honestly think this is better and more appealing. On the other hand we have got Dunhill Century, also similar but nowhere near as smooth and high quality as Au Hasard, i was so excited when i got Dunhill Century but i ended up selling it, it's just not as good and in my opinion not wearable, there is something off about it.

This is my favorite from the mens lineup of LV fragrances. It is definitely not super soft like some of the others have mentioned it has a lot of power off of my skin nothing more than 3 sprays. Also i moisturize my skin everyday which helps It opens with with citrus but that doesn't last that long this scent is soft leather musk with sandalwood with a soft faint cardamom and pear accord hanging around the in the background this has become on of my favorite fragrances of all time. It kind of reminds me of Bvlgari black slightly. Scent: 8/10 Performance : 8/10 Sillage: 8/10 Compliment factor: 8/10

Gets lots of compliments and also lasts forever. That pear note along with the musk/leather are what I pick up the most with this. Smells very good, not a complex fragrance stays pretty linear honestly, but I dont have any issues with that. Im so annoyed they discontinued this amazing scent

To my dismay, it's discontinued, so I've been rationing my useage. A shame because it's hugely wearable, no matter the event, day or night, and at any time of the year. Masterful blending. A terrific fragrance.

I don't know why more people don't talk about this one. It's such an easy grab kinda fragrance, one you can literally wear every day of the year if you wanted. It's sandalwood with a little musk, so nice.

I love how this fragrance blends into a skin scent throughout the day. It has been my signature scent for 5 years. It’s a shame they’re vaulting it.

All the notes just sound very "Louis Vuitton" to me. Very excited to try

Closing out my Louis Vuitton journey for now is Au Hasard; another one of those offerings from LV that doesn't get much love. Like many of the others, I'm sure I sampled Au Hasard when I was at the LV boutique, but it didn't leave any memorable impression on me since I can't remember too much about how it smelled. Are we gonna end on a high note? Let's get into it; Scent: The opening is leathery, fresh, and woody. The primary notes I get are leather, sandalwood, aldehydes, and bergamot. The strongest of the notes are the leather and sandalwood. The leather is immediately noticeable off the first spray. It's the same kind of leather I encountered with Sur La Route; bright and animalic. Following closely behind is the sandalwood. It's strong yet gentle with the signature creaminess that sandalwood is known for; the same type of sandalwood note that's found in LV Lovers. Up next is the aldehydes and bergamot. The aldehydes confer a distinct soapy, fresh vibe to the background of the fragrance. Lastly, the bergamot is noticeable underneath as a citrusy, spicy, aromatic tone. The dry down is woody, powdery, and fresh. The primary notes I get are sandalwood, musk, aldehydes, and pear. The strongest of the notes are the sandalwood and musk. The sandalwood is the main player in the dry down with the same woody, creamy, slightly powdery accord. The musk is introduced alongside the sandalwood as a standout note. It's not the bright, fruity type of musk you find in fragrances like Musk Therapy. This musk is soft and fresh. It's not so much a note on its own as it is a modifier to the other notes, imbuing them with a fuzzy quality. This is followed by the aldehydes and pear. The aldehydes note still carries the same clean, soapy tone from the opening with an emphasis on powder in the dry down. Lastly, the pear is detectable in the back as a sweet fruity nuance. The leather is still faintly present in the dry down, but it's an afterthought. Performance: Initial projection is strong at around 6 feet. Sillage is strong as well with an easily noticeable scent trail. After a few hours the projection was about 3-4 feet and the scent trail had died down but was still noticeable. The fragrance became a skin scent before the 7 hour mark, probably around hour 5-6. When to wear: This is a versatile fragrance that can be worn any season, any time of day, and almost any occasion. It's relaxed enough to be dressed down and worn casually, but it has enough complexity and sophistication to be dressed up and worn formally as well. Anything from black tie affairs to hanging out with friends, this fragrance will work. The only scenario I wouldn't wear it is the office just because of that animalic leather note in the opening. Blind buy: I can't in good faith say this is a safe blind buy. If you love sandalwood fragrances, you'll probably enjoy this. However, because of that animalic leather note in the opening I can't say this will work universally for sandalwood lovers. It's mostly sandalwood, but still give it a try first before committing to a full bottle. Final verdict: I'm a sandalwood lover, so almost any sandalwood-forward fragrance is going to be a winner in my book; save for Santal 33, I don't know what's wrong with that fragrance. At it's core, Au Hasard is a sandalwood fragrance; so I did enjoy wearing it. I think the leather in the opening, while a bit sharp, works well in the composition along with the pear and aldehydes. It's a bit of a mishmash of notes, but it somehow works. Performance was average with good projection and sillage for the first few hours and lasting about 5-6. Versatility is high with this fragrance and it can be worn almost any time. Mass-appealing is not something I would call this fragrance. Some people won't vibe with the leather, and others will find the diversity of the notes a bit scrambling. But I don't think anyone will think it objectively smells bad. All things considered, I think Au Hasard is a great fragrance that deserves more hype than it currently gets, which is essentially zero; but it's not one that I'll add to my collection. One of my top 5 fragrances is LV Lovers, a sandalwood bomb. I don't really need two LV fragrances that occupy the same space, and I think LV Lovers does a better job with that DNA. Still, I would recommend anyone that likes sandalwood to give this fragrance a try. Scent: 8/10 Longevity: 6/10 Sillage: 6/10

So, at the beginning of this review (next paragraph) I only sprayed once on each wrist and started my review. However, as I was explaining the green notes and Neroli, it reminded me of another frag that I have. So, I ran in to go get my bottle of Gucci - The Alchemist's Garden 1921, and sprayed it higher up on my arm, so as not to have them layered, but also sprayed the opposite hand again twice with Au Hasard. I'll leave what I began to say about it, but it's gonna go in another whole different direction, because things changed real quick after spraying again. So, the opening is aldehydes, like a metallic presence you get in the air when ozone is high. As they flash off and die down (~10 minutes), the green notes begin to show up with a citrusy floral thing. To me, the green notes are a mix of cypress and eucalyptus. The freesia and Neroli are the florals coming through with the green notes. I'm not picking up on the pear, cardamom, ambrette or leather yet. Maybe they got lost somewhere on the back 40. Maybe they start coming thru later in the drydown?After seeing all the votes for leather, I was expecting more. The green notes with Neroli brings another frag to mind, Gucci - The Alchemist's Garden 1921. Very green (like cypress and eucalyptus) and Neroli prominent. Ok. Now, this is CRAZY. So, I just sprayed Gucci 3 times and LVAH 3 times, and now the LVAH doesn't smell green with florals and Neroli. It totally changed when applying more to my skin. It's now more of a petroleum, like a light diesel. I guess this is where the votes for Dior Fahrenheit is coming from, and I don't like it at all. I actually liked the green with Neroli and freesia better. This has actually changed for the worse going into the mid/drydown. It's become a heavier petroleum, like chainsaw bar oil, but that has heated up and almost burnt. Yeah. This is a total disappointment. If I want to smell like burnt petroleum, I'll go to work and go stand in the crude unit for 10 minutes to get the same stinch for free. DEFINITELY not paying $280 for this, nor $80 for Dior Fahrenheit that I can't stand. I guess the moral of this review is, if you're wearing LVAH and you smell like a crude refinery, you put on too much and you stink. Go wash yourself and wear something else. Hell, you'd be better off using OFF.

Sparkling Bergamot citrus + zesty Lemon + Green Leaf + Aldehydes + Black Pepper + Cardamom + Musk + dusty Sandalwood + Italian white Neroli Same scent genre as the refreshing & uplifting 'Fico di Amalfi' but done with a zesty lemon instead of Pink Grapefruit. It's really nice. Smells expensive white t-shirt & jeans, or white suit dress shirt, expensive smelling dumb-reach versatile frag. It's "clean guy sexy" of a dna. Smells like there is another small white floral added to this, but my straight male unexperienced with florals nose can't identify it, note pyramid listing it as 'Freesia'. There is also a note of creaminess added in the tiniest amount, giving it a lemon meringue scent dna and taming down the zestiness of the lemon. I LOVE leather, and i have not picked up on a leather note in this. End/Bottom dryoff is a Burnt Rubber smoky note, it's a bizarre addiction to the dna, and coming out of nowhere caught me off guard. So it goes from an invigorating freshy, to a hipster burnt rubber scent?? :S It's easy to think this is greater than it really is because of the gorgeous LV presentation & ripoff pricetag. It's too generic smelling of a citrus scent for me to think of it other than designer. Id love to own it and buy it if it wasn't for the expensive pricetag. But im not obsessed with it to the point where i'd pay LV's pricepoint. It's a big 'Like' fragrance, but not a 'Love'. 3.5/5 Woofs!

Such a unique fragrance. Its very odd. Very mysterious. Hard to describe. One person can try this and say its a freshie while another person will say it leans on the rich side. One will say they smell sandalwood, and another wont. One will think its masculine and the other feminine. Its not a very natural smelling sandalwood but its a sweet, sour, creamy, fluffy, dry woody fragrance that smells very medicinal....like walking into a pharmacy. It has a very odd balance of bright/tart citrus, a rich sweetness and a woody/creamy base. This is a fragrance I bet 75% of people wont like the first time they smell it....like me, I hated it at first and now for some weird reason I really like it, it grew on me...Its so unique you actually have to try it for yourself, you cant put this fragrance into words or even describe the profile. L'Immensite, Orage, Sur la Route are still better than this one but I can see why others would like this more...NOTHING on the market like it.

This is a perfume marketed as 'for men' but I took a sample home for my husband and ended up trying it on instead. I'm glad I did as it's quite nice. I wouldn't own a full bottle and it's a 'fresh' patchouli which is very rarely a note I'm interested in wearing however I like this enough to have worn it a few times now. I've primarily worn it for going to the gym as I like the way it brightens my mood, and the leather note isn't projected hugely when I wear it but more in the background and subtle. The green, fresh patchouli is really nice and clean smelling so it's perfect in a light spray to wear when you're exerting/sweating a lot. :) I think there are better made, and more affordable clean, fresh patchouli fragrances so not worth a full bottle purchase for me but I'll certainly continue wearing the samples.

This is a dry woody, leathery, and musky scent at its core. The top notes are bright and citrusy, which mellows our to a warm neroli with the spice of cardamom and the sweetness of pear. All in all, it’s actually very well done. I’m a big fan of the mid and base notes, which evolve relatively quickly. While the scent is definitely refined and well put together, I find it is lacking on longevity. Sillage is moderate, at best, and I do catch glimpses of it on myself. I wish it lasted longer because it is a pretty fantastic scent. Classy and masculine, by all means, though. Overall Scent: 8.5/10 Longevity: 6.5/10 Sillage: 7/10 Adjectives: Classy, leathery, musky, dry.

For me, the core of Au Hasard is a soft, papery, powdery, muted sweetness. It's easy-going and casual—all fuzzy musk, airy powder, and papery wood. A finely-milled medley of pollen, talc, and wood-dust. Like a youngish couple who just bought a Cloud Couch and spend an entire long weekend lounging all over it, like a newly discovered province in the geography of their apartment. They watch nature documentaries and old comfort movies, while mugs of sweet, milky rooibos clutter the coffee table.

Smells like neroli, ambroxan, aldehydes and sandalwood. Imo this is an expensive designer fragrance not a luxury fragrance. Normally I do NOT ever denote price because it's none of my business how much one spends on a fragrance but I'd say maybe put Aqua Di Gio on one wrist and this on the other before purchasing, just saying. Price notwithstanding I like it.

This is weird. All I get is Fahrenheit and no one even mentioned that. The name literally means "at random" in English and I would hazard a guess this was created by throwing random notes together. At least J. Cavallier was honest about it :)

Way overpriced for something that’s almost a copy of ‘Century’ from Alfred Dunhill. But it does make me appreciate my Century more now. 😅

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DIOR AQUA FAHRENHEIT. Not even close to that. Has similarities with Santal 33 for me.

I get the leather and the musk. Definitely picking up the sandalwood. I even get a hint of smokiness, which is right up my alley. In fact, on paper (and even on my skin) this ticks a lot of my boxes – dry, smooth, masculine. Gives off a good autumnal vibe on my skin, which speaks to my soul. And yet ... it’s just not exciting in any way. I’m not intoxicated by it. There are some fragrances I can’t stop going back to smell on myself. This one I sprayed, appreciated, and promptly forgot I was wearing. So is it bad? Not at all. Is it good? Sure. Mostly it’s just ... there. Boring. Inconspicuous. It’s a nice scent to wear as the weather starts to get a bit chilly. But it likely won’t pull compliments. And it won’t even stick in your own mind. What was I talking about again ... ?

Leather, citrus, spice. Nothing wow here. Just randomness in a bottle. Smells like a freshly polished old ottoman. Weak performance on my skin

Leather, aromatic spices, oud (synthetic), and ambroxan is what I get. I think I'd enjoy this much more if they didn't use ambroxan for the musk. I notice LV uses ambroxan in a lot of their fragrances, unfortunately. This is a pass. I see this compared to Fahrenheit--I don't really get that comparison. Fahrenheit is much better, IMO.

I don’t like it. Sorry to say that i hate this perfume. Its smell like gasoline or some kind of chemical used in engineering industry to me, it made me instantly want to puke and headache. The smell stay like that for hours and not seems to develop through time into something better.

Seems I am in the minority here, but this was my first love from Louis Vuitton. It was the most unique men’s release from them that I could use as a daily fragrance. The others like L’Immensite and Sur La Route didn’t strike me as good value, Orage was something I had smelled before, and Nouveau Monde was a little too dirty for me to justify a full bottle. Au Hasard can be worn at the office, to the gym, to a date, anywhere really. Year-round. It’s a signature fragrance that leaves its mark. Just like designer clothing, it’s not universally likable. It’s a statement-maker that immediately draws positive attention if you are a stylish person. Don’t spray this on if you’re wearing stuff from Old Navy

This is a pass for me. Sure, this does smell nice. It's a nice pleasant powdery citrus that I found enjoyable. Then, about 15 minutes in I started smelling some body odor. I actually thought I had forgotten to use deodorant this morning, but I realized it was this fragrance. This anamalic/body odor like aroma really starts to prevail and remains there in tandem with the powdery citrus. At first I thought it was an intriguing combo, but as time wore on I became quite disgusted with it and actually changed shirts and scrubbed my arms and neck. Admittingly I'm not ready for animalic/body odor scents at this point in my fragrance journey and I'm not sure if I ever will be.

Au Hasard smells almost identical to Santal 33. Although there are some differences, I think overall they smell too similar that I don't see the point of having both in my collection. To me, AH is just a light and citrusy version of Santal 33. If what you're looking for is a woody/leathery scent that is a little fresher, easier to wear, and not too empowering, you should go for AH. But if what you're looking for is sort of a thicker woody/leathery scent with stronger performance and projection, you should go for Santal 33. Pick one. Don't buy both. Not unless you are super rich and don't mind spending extra USD 250-300 on the same perfume you already own.

Aldehydes, musk, cashmeran, ambrette. The ugly duckling of the masculine LV fragrances. However, I really enjoy this one for some reason. One may need to give it some time to get used to the opening, as there's some slight soapy nuances as well, but to me it's the masculine version of California Dream. Smells synthetic at times but it somehow fits here. Could be that some of the musks in this one are of the same variety as in California Dream. The base is blended with woods and leather. All in all, a nice musky woody-leathery scent with decent performance. 7,5/10

First time that I’m seeing comparisons that actually make sense. It has some similarities to Dunhil Century but they were released in the same year so this is not a copy, also the Dunhil smells off-putting while this one starts leathery and dries down woody. I’ll compare it to others so that you can imagine how it smells, grab On the Beach mix with Santal 33. Also, this smells 100% unisex, don’t fear the leather opening, ladies if you like S33.

It smells like rotting wood, dust, and old leather. I've smelled it somewhere, I can't remember exactly, but it's like an out-dated man's cologne - a man's cologne that's been decomposed by times and all that's left is the base note. I can get a hint of Fahrenheit in my head, but it's not as fresh as that. + Oh, now I realize what this scent reminds me of: Jo Malone's Sweet Lime and Cedar, which someone said “smells like hamsters' sawdust”!

This one seemed confused, like a bunch of notes thrown at each other without rhythm, though it is smooth. If I wanted a subdued scent such as this, orage is also calm but more coherent and interesting

Great stuff, really good longevity. I’m getting a scent very very close to Zegna Indonesian Oud. Not quite as pungent though. I tried the entire line and all are very different from one another.

This is just an exorbitantly expensive version of Dunhill Century. I literally smell no difference. If you want the exact same smell for a fraction of the prixe, just get Dunhill Century.

This is very feminine. Sweet, sunny, floral, clean, green-ish. Strong pear, strong neroli. Pretty much no leather or clear citrus. Could easily be in their female range.

Confirmed discontinued at my local boutique, recommend trying to purchase now if you were on the fence or wanted a backup bottle.

Zegna Indo Oud was never pungent to my nose, almost subtle. Are you saying this is even less subtle ?
