Devil's Night Cap

If you've ever wanted to smell like a Hozier song or the color dark green, this is the perfect cologne for you. It leans more masculine but only because it's a pretty heavy scent. I consider it very androgynous. It lasts for a very long time and is very potent and rests farther away from the skin than most colognes, so only a few sprays will stay noticeable and last you for a while. I've had people stop and ask me about my cologne multiple times even 6+ hours after application. If you're someone looking for a strong, very noticeable and uniquely demanding scent then this is a perfect choice for you. If you prefer scents that stay closer to the skin, then I'd say maybe give this one a pass for now. You have to be ready to dedicate yourself to this once you have it on, but if it's your type of cologne then it's definitely worth it. On the first spray the oak-moss is almost overpowering but as it dries down, the other elements of the cologne begin to shine as well. However, this is definitely a predominately oak-moss smell. The oak-moss itself is such a rare scent anyway, and for it to be one of the front scents on a cologne is what sets this piece apart in the best of ways. The overall scent is dark, lush, and enveloping. Wearing this makes me feel like I've walked miles out into a dense temperate forest and let myself be consumed by the foliage. It's absolutely beautiful and completely unique, I've never smelled anything quite like it. It's so unique and rare that I've spoken to people who work at Lush who have never smelled it or had it in stock before. I actually got it as a blind buy- which was pretty ambitious considering how I'd never smelled anything even close to it before and still haven't- but it was definitely worth the leap of faith. I'd definitely recommend it as a blind buy if you're someone who knows that they want the lush, dark, earthy and disturbingly romantic scent style. It is, however, very expensive. For those who aren't familiar with cologne ingredients, oak-moss is one of the few scents that can't be replicated very well artificially. What makes this cologne so successful is that they go with actual oak-moss, but that also makes it pretty pricy. Again, I'd consider it worth it, but only if you know for a fact this is the kind of signature cologne you're looking for. Overall, I'd say this cologne is worth it *IF* you know this is the kind-of scent "vibe" you're looking for. It's one of my favorites and will always be my signature scent.

I do have a soft spot for many of these Lush scents that have that lovely unpolished natural perfume feel, but are crafted with a certain command often not found amongst natural perfumers. They elevate raw materials and showcase how their interactions can yield some enthralling effects. Take Devil's Nightcap, for example, which smells to me like a stream the ruptures the forest and the moist earth that buttresses it, with the smoke of a distant bonfire passing through. Something about it reminds me of the early spring thaw, mud and mire, the peaty smell of earth enlivened once more, bursting through decomposition, small signs of life reanimated, the shoots of plants surfacing. There smells like a considerable amount of oakmoss absolute here—likely as much as what can be permitted, imparting that bark meets decaying leaves meets spongy moss sensation. The inclusion of ylang ylang only enhances its effect, its humid quality lending a ripeness to this nature-bound affair. This is all about an overcast afternoon in March, the spring peepers start their chorus, and a small corner is sought to brood over life. I am fully aware that I am in the minority that appreciate any perfume that suggests organic matter, so this is perhaps why so many seem to dismiss this as objectionable, but even the mere sniff from atomizer gives me goose pimples.

This smells like so many memories from my childhood: A walk with my father, through marshland close to our summer cabin, picking cottongrass; collectiong dark green and moist moss with my mother, before creating tiny 'mosekoner' (decorative figures/dolls made of twigs, moss and fabric); my fathers wool jacket after a long day raking fallen leaves and working in the garden in autumn. It's a dark green, moist, damp mossy and earthy scent with barely there nuances of sensual ylang ylang, that keeps the scent from being too earthy, and a refreshing, almost cleansing hint of aromatic sage. It smells so natural and raw - ancient even - but in a way that feels both familiar and slightly melancholic. It's the smell of something from the past (really long ago), but still alive in some way and with us today. There is power and wisdom in this scent, and an amazing sort of peace. The kind of peace you only find deep within nature. I think this might be my absolute favourite scent from Lush/Gorilla Perfumes. It evokes such a deep and fascinating atmosphere, and wakes so many emotions and associations. A fabulous creation! Longevity is about 8 hours on my skin, and sillage is quite strong right away, but dries down to a pretty solid medium.

Absolutely delicious 10/10 will wear this till I die. Imagine you wake up in the middle of the woods somewhere in the deep of south-west Cornwall, covered in ash and mud. You crawl away onto the damp autumn morning forest floor into a fairy ring and realise that a group of witches had unsuccessfully tried to sacrifice you the night before in some sort of ceremonial burning. You are still alive although you both look and smell like you've put up a fight. And then the piskies come and take you away because you smell so good. This is exactly what this perfume smells like. It's addicting. Bonus points if you're a smoker. I've also been told I smell like I've just walked out of a jazz bar from the 70's. I can kinda see that but the oakmoss is kind of crazy when you first put it on for immediate urban vibes. It's beautiful, it's musky, it's earthy, it's grounding, and when you put it on it totally envelops you and you forget you've put on a perfume instead of set an entire tone and vibe and soundtrack to your life. Highly recommend. Especially for you weird witchy lesbian goth girls too you guys would love this, kind of a man repellent perfume to be honest which I was looking for anyway hahahaha

Lush is having an online sale at the moment due to Covid-19 and this appeared for half the price and thanks to @homicidalunicorns description of it being a scent of Lovecraftian forest I decided to buy one. Received it today and honestly, I was expecting it to be slightly too much but I was quite pleasantly surprised. It smells earthy and woody while the clary sage prevents it from becoming "muddy", giving it a crisp green edge like a breath of fresh air and the ylang ylang and orange blossom giving the floral background. I can relate to the term Lovecraftian forest: Imagine yourself standing in a forest on a cool night with only the moonlight shining your way; breathing in the cold air mingled with the scent of earth, woods/moss and flowers. That's how I interpret Devil's Nightcap. After a while it turns slightly floral and it's where the orange blossom shines through without losing the woodiness/earthiness to it. A very lovely scent. It has now become my bedtime scent Gonna be one of my favourite Lush scent besides Karma, Yoga Bomb, Twilight and Winter Garden (not in database) :-) The only disappointment would be the longevity. I expect longer performance given its price tag.

So, I'm usually a florals person and my most-worn scents are either big juicy florals or creamy musks. This is the absolute opposite, came out of nowhere, and in the year since purchasing, it has become one of my signature fragrances. But, like. One that I wear when alone because it is likely alienating. Here is a short description: Lovecraftian forest. It's the earthiest scent I've ever smelled, and I once owned a lotion that smelled like dirt. The real oakmoss is breathtakingly beautiful (perhaps literally, given the last review). When I say earthy, I mean a literal earthiness, not the hippie earthiness often seen in Lush fragrances. It's damp, dark woods and moss and to me is somehow almost sensual, though I could never explain why. The orange blossom and ylang-ylang are distant breaths to me, rounding out the wood but never really breaking through to be noticeable on their own. Phenomenal and deserves to be well-known, particularly as it's one of the few easily available fragrances on the market with real oakmoss. I'm also genuinely concerned that Lush will discontinue it.

A dense forest, cool misty air. Water drips on you from trees covered in lichen. Your passing feet stir decomposing vegetation overlaying the earth and moss beneath the leaf canopy; you sense you are being watched by hundreds of eyes, as their wary owners shelter in the bracken, thick brambles and holly bushes, studded with jewel-like berries. A squirrel uncovers a buried acorn, deftly manoeuvring it in its paws, and watches you closely as it nibbles at the shell, bushy tail arched and twitching, before swiftly scampering up a nearby tree. A pied woodpecker is hammering in the distance, the sound echoing and bouncing off the trees. You catch a glimpse of something moving, and turn your head to see a mouse-like treecreeper scurrying down the oak tree, before disappearing behind its trunk. A smell of dirt and something bitter and slightly animalic - is it fox? - wafts around you. Small feet have tracked regular paths through the undergrowth - and there! - you spot the entrance to a badger sett, used bedding carefully removed and stored nearby. What a bloody ride. I love this.

It starts off a little smokey and sharp for some people (I liked it even though it is a unique fragrance at first) but on my skin at least, it settles into a sweet scent with a lingering woody and smokey note that really keeps you hooked. This is the scent that turned me over to more unisex fragrances since my guy actually kept sniffing this on my wrist all evening. It's discontinued now, but you can buy it from the LUSH kitchen online. I bought a large bottle since it was my daily signature fragrance when it first came out. Now I am using it more for a "going out with friends to a coffee shop" fragrance to try to keep it longer. Really wish they had kept this one instead of Sikkim Girls which did nothing for me.

Real oakmoss? Could not help but purchasing this rarity as oakmoss is one of my loved raw materials, along with vetiver and sandalwood. It smell exactly as I hoped, like a damp forest, decomposing leaves and freshly digged earth on a misty autumnal morning hike. It's a pretty linear and uncomplicated scent made up of few ingredients. The oakmoss shadows the sweet ylang ylang, and I can hardly detect any clary sage. It's such an organic and raw fragrance that I only wear it when at home, just for my own pleasure. Projection is good and I can smell it after 12 hours on my dry skin and up to 48 on clothing.

This is one of the few new Gorilla perfumes that I actually like. It opens with a very green and natural accord. Grass and herbs and maybe some cucumber. Drying down it becomes more herbal. There's a smoky aspect as well, warm and comforting, but it never looses the fresh herbal feel. I really really love this perfume. I think that, though it leans more to the masculine side of the perfume spectrum, it's easily wearable for both sexes. It might even be a little too floral for some men. It's quite longlasting and has a soft projection that invites one to lean in closer.

None of the stores in my city stock this regularly but one did have a tester and it's as good as I had hoped for! My partner specifically requested something mossy and I knew I didn't want to get him a "clean" moss but instead, a damp earthy one. This is it! Got myself on the waitlist which gives me time to save up because it's definitely overpriced. Looking forward to gifting it to him though

An ode to oakmoss absolute comprised almost entirely of the main ingredient. I can't say I'm overjoyed by the new lush fragrances (though none of them are bad at all) but this one is a simple joy for me. The perfumer treats the Oakmoss like the most expensive floral absolute to a gorgeous if not too simple effect. Not stunning, but definitely comfy and unconventionally pretty.

Moss on wet old trees, dark green leaves. Some floral smell. Beautiful ! You're literally into the deep woods smelling what's around you. I bought a vintage bottle. The smell is excellent but longevity non-existent. I wonder if it's because of the age... I'm happy anyhow. It's more like a therapy than an everyday fragrance. I might try to find a newer bottle. It's that good.

This smells mysterious and natural, like a walk in the woods at night.When I first sprayed it, I immediately smelt wet soil which later transformed into a cool oak moss scent. This is what I would imagine a vampire out of a fantasy novel might smell like

This perfume always reminded me of the "The lady of Shallot" by Tennyson. It opens in a damp mystical tower where someone is cooking a strong smelling herbal brew. Then it slowly floats down the river, in a sad beautiful scent of the forest and water.

Real nature, real forests, real woods, wet grass in the woods with some flowers nearby. Morning in the woods or out there in nature somewhere walking or hiking.... on the real mother earth. Raw, real, balanced, earthy-wet-flowery-aromatic.

Is this real oak-moss? If so it’s beautiful. Devil’s Night Cap smells like wet earth in a rainforest while smoking a pipe full of sweet tobacco. Absolutely a wonderful ride. Love. Love. Love.

This is an oakmoss beast. If you like Oakmoss this is for you. Seriously. Its damp, dark, foresty, mysterious and lasts for ages.

Feel like an evil deep forest hermit.

This is an overload of pure, real oakmoss, and it's breathtaking. There's so much oakmoss in this (and the ingredients say it's genuine) and very little else in my nose, but the rarity of oakmoss, particularly real oakmoss, in modern perfumery makes this absolutely intoxicating. It's also... a lot. The first four hours or so are definitely "too much" on me. It's pure bitter oakmoss, bitter like tannins, like old over-steeped black tea at the bottom of a cold cup that's been sitting around all day. It's incredibly strong. When the attendant at Lush asked which one I was looking at and I pointed to Devil's Nightcap, she gave me a look and kindly suggested I try it on a paper testing strip: "Because some of them are pretty strong, and they stick around for a while." Of course, I proceeded to test on skin anyway: I knew what I was getting into. But wow, she was right. It's so strong and entirely bitter that it feels quite metallic for the first four to six hours, sheerly in the concentration of bitterness. This phase shoots past inky straight to the smell of iron. It's loud, bright, and prominent, and I wish there were a way to tone it down, to tamp it to a lower volume across more of my volume. I can see this working well as a soap or lotion scent for this reason. The first word in my head when first smelling this was: astringent. It's super powerful, and i got a blast of it without leaning towards my arm or taking my mask off. This is astringent far beyond any alcohol or herbal scent I have known, concentrated to the point of metallic clanging. I get a hint of clary sage on the edge of the opening, brightening with a herbal touch, but no flowers of any kind on my skin. Some eight hours into its wear I begin to sense, at fleeting moments, a comparative sweetness buried somewhere in here, which might potentially be the creamy woodiness of oak, or perhaps simply the smell of my own skin. There's a hint of smokiness at times in the drydown as well. Functionally, I would treat this as a pure oakmoss scent, great for layering (after the first four to six hours of slight clary sage and metallic intensity evaporate). Somehow, without being a standard artificial "blue" cologne, I register this as a genuine blue scent. It's cooling, not at all warming, like a cool moonbeam in a shadowy forest. It's blue the way the light is blue at night when walking under a full silvery moon. These descriptions sound trite, but they're genuine. The copy describing waves hitting an ancient stone monolith in the dead of night is dead on. This is a scent you have to commit to, because (at least, on me) it lasts for days. The first two hours of my experience were complete disgust at the strength and metallic clanging, mingled with a fascination at the unique oakmoss scent. Three to four hours in, it's settling in to a quieter swamp experience, albeit still significantly metallic. Four to eight hours in, it's so delicious, cooling, relaxing, not too much, a lovely moonbeam that's growing on me more and more. It's still very noticeable on my skin right now, some 30 hours after I first sprayed it on. I'm getting a little concerned (I'd like to wear something else tomorrow for Thanksgiving, so I hope Devil's Nightcap clears out) but I'm also thoroughly impressed. Maybe if I applied it thoroughly over my body and grew to love the first two hours or so of the overwhelming metallic opening, I would love to own this and wear it for days on end, overlapping applications and only clearing it off with a long shower. Devil's Nightcap reminds me how much I love a good strong oakmoss note paired with anything else. On the other arm, I was sampling the nice but uninteresting Twilly Eau Ginger, and the alternating whiffs and combination of the two fragrances were a delightful experience. I've said it before, but this would be a great layering fragrance to experiment with. It's like a chypre-maker in a bottle: just add oakmoss! All in all: this is the cool blue light pooled around the shadow of a tree. Resplendent and thoughtful. From metal to swamp to forest floor to moonlight. Natural, genuine, and like nothing else out there. I wish I could get a decant of this somewhere, or anything less than the giant bottles in the Lush stores. This is a scent that I particularly enjoy, despite being wildly different from my usual tastes in fragrance, maybe because it smells exactly like one of my favorite candles. The best and only way to describe it is that it's the scent of the forest after it rains. When the sky is still overcast deep gray, and the tall trees look an even more intense shade of emerald green. You sit on a mossy stone and breathe in. This is what you would smell. It has a very "moist" quality to it, reminding me of petrichor. The scent itself is fairly linear, it starts out with this very dark, wet yet dry-smelling wood, and only after a few hours it turns a bit warmer, with the floral notes giving it a sweeter quality. I find it to have really strong projection, so be careful while spraying it, and the longevity is quite good, I find this lasting stronger a couple hours more than the "standard". It used to be my signature for a short while, but I rarely wear it now, as I have to be in a very specific mood: dark clothing, grey/rainy weather, and brooding aura. An old and secluded Spanish moss filled tree deep within a southern forest. The fresh southern morning air pushing the dew drop on the moss and greenery around it off into the air. This is a super moss focused fragrance with a bright opening of soapy orange blossom, sweetish yellow ylang-ylang, and an overdose of green dewy moss. As it dries it loses its soapy opening but gains this bright green sage note that is still super fresh. A deep woody backbone supporting its base the whole way through. The sage, moss, ylang-ylang, and wood mix is the main bulk of this fragrance, love this unique mix. Very fresh take on moss. Super easy wear. Leans masculine but if you love moss you gotta get your nose on this. Signature scent worthy. Long lasting with moderate projection. First from lush, excited to try more. 7.2/10

Devil's Nightcap has the most frighteningly hideous topnotes in living memory, but if you persevere for about 20 minutes without screaming and scrubbing, you might be surprized. It develops into a very nice oakmossy herbal, semi-sweet, smoky affair, which is surprizingly pleasant after the violent overture. An hour into its lifetime on my skin it again turned funny, kind of cheap, but as time passed it calmed down, became a few shades darker and comfortingly aromatic. Not a huge masterpiece, but interesting and thoroughly likeable.

Devil's Nightcap is an intersting one. It's like a mix of orange blossoms with sea air. It's salty and woodsy. Definitely more masculine, but I can see women wear this as well. There are a lot of oak moss notes in there. It just reminds me of summer and the beach. Refreshing, the sillage is great. One of the strongest ones from lush. I like it a lot, but there are days when I don't feel like wearing it. 4/5

Smells like rotting leafs on forest floors in Fall, with a bit of a spicy note. I really like it, unfortunately it fades into nothingness pretty quickly which i is a bit sad for a perfume at this price. Maybe I'm just broke but reapplying a 230€ perfume every two hours isn't my idea of a reasonable expense.

Deep green mossy goodness that has a great earthy smell. All around very comforting. Damp and foresty.

I just bought a bottle of this — and I dunno... I don’t think it’s for me? I just told my best friend that I smell like a garden gnome. But, the other reviewers are correct — it smells like you frolicked in a damp forrest. Perfect if you’re going out in wet. stormy weather because it smells a little like mildew. If you’re a LUSH fanatic like I am, this pairs remarkably well with Tramp body wash (if your local shop has a retro wall that carries it). I’ll probably sell my bottle, but I can respect anyone who can pull this off. I just don’t think it’s me 😭🥺 High quality, strong, unique, and it lasts forever... at the cost of smelling like you walked out of the Tulgey Woods in Alice in Wonderland.

Campfire bliss :) If you have ever been camping in the great outdoors, you will understand that the journey is a mix of unsettled anticipation....followed by restorative and rejuvenating peace. This is Devil's Nightcap. The first 15 mins is the harsh task of setting camp. Get his job done without fuss then sit back and be soothed by the smoky woods and aromatic earth. Don't wear this indoors...it will confuse you and you may call the fire brigade unnecessarily ... Your house is not on fire! L: Moderate S: Moderate

Rain on tree-lined streets, organic and urban at the same time. A huge foggy opening of oak bark and oakmoss and oak-y sweet clary sage that calms down quickly to powdery ash and sweet orange flower water. Ambiguous and androgynous, city gardens and paved forests. I like it on other people.

Herby, balsamic, woody, earthy, sharp.... definately an unusual one, but wonderful on the skin.

Perfectly named. Promises something good, or at least interesting; opening with a blast of pine, smoke, grass and something sweet in the background. Quickly dies down to a sad, powdery sweetness. More than a touch of cheap incense. That's it. Cheap, powdery incense with the merest hit of oakmoss. Hell would be a place where there was nothing but this fragrance to be worn for all eternity. Insipid.

This is so vile. It smells like a monkey house to me. Had to scrub off.

It ia incredible. It is exactly what I love about Lush perfumes, a journey in a bottle. Not a trip, not a holiday, a journey. It has similar contast in it that Breath of God has, but Breath of God is a dry version and this is a wet version if that makes sense. Opening is a bit smoky and herbal because of the sage but the oakmoss and ylang ylandgand orange blossom follow and it gets sweeter and a bit powdery but the mossy wet notes are alway there keeping it interesting. All the reviews below saying it is like walking through a wet forest at night are completely right. The only thing I would add is that it is the shortest night in the year and you are looking for a flowring fern, you cannot see it yet but you can definitely smell its flower. Magical but not very strong, maybe because my bottle is quite old.

This is the most oak moss I've smelled in a fragrance that claims to have oak moss as a note, and based on the ingredients, it seems Devil's Nightcap actually contains real oak moss absolute so that's no surprise that the note is really strong and authentic. I could agree with most of the reviews below. The scent itself smells very green, with bits of florals to soften the edges. There's a very slight metallic quality that makes the whole thing strongly reminiscent of a moss-covered rock under a blue moonlight. There's hardly anything synthetic, it smells so natural and therapeutic, and unlike most fragrances that claim to smell like a forest, Devil's Nightcap actually smells like a real forest at night.

Hmm, must say this is a bit of a disappointment. I have the soap and adore it. I love the mix of earthiness, wood and orange. I wanted exactly that in the perfume. On first spritz they are similar-ish but after an hour tops the perfume has turned in to a powder bomb on me and not much else. All the earthiness and interest has gone. It has no punch, nothing unusual or interesting. After 3 hours it has vanished. I don't understand how they can make it work with the soap but not with the perfume. I'll be returning this one.

This would have been a good contestant to become my signature fragrance if it had not been that after putting it on my skin I had to rush to the doctor's to get an adrenaline shot because it nearly got me into anaphylaxis. Just to avoid any misunderstanding: great scent, almost vile! It is just that my body sadly rejected it.

Nexangelus' description ("damp", "not fresh") is right on. Over a short time it gets even less fresh so you might think it is too organic for you in a way. Like dead fallen leaves. I recommend it for home enjoyment. Also, I think THIS should have got the name "The Smell of Weather Turning".

Wasn't even a like at first, now it's grown on me so much that I've bought a second bottle! I prefer the scent it leaves on my clothes compared to my skin. The orange blossom is the star when I sniff my clothes & it lasts even in to the next day.

Man, I wish I got the same experience other people did. I get heavy black tarry smoky birch tar and nothing else from this. I adore oakmoss, but that's not what I smell here. Try before buying for sure.

A love. Lots of oakmoss, with freshness from a sap like facet. Note of cassis balanced by a resinous scent. Orange flower adds tanginess. Easy to smell on yourself. Long lasting.

Quite nice, after the Lord of Goathorn! Fresh, mossy, earthy. Not my usual scent, but if you are into herbal earthiness, with a touch of sweetness, this is nice.
