Bois Datchaï

¡¡In my honest opinion the best scent ever made!! Just bought my 4th full bottle so I had to say something. Black currant immediately meets my nose with a light fresh picked berry scent, like a handful of ripe and unripe blackberries. Followed by the cedar and tea it has an almost sharp metallic opening- like a fog you are so close to seeing through but underneath this veil I can feel the woody notes and slight smokiness softly swirl around. As it dries down the black currant gets slightly more juicy/sweet and underneath I get a very calm "matte" tea/cedar combo (I guess it opens sharp then calms down), nothing like pencil shavings like a lot of cedars. Papyrus, guaiac, patchouli, incense all create a harmonious very light and inoffensive smoky profile. My novice nose can't single one of them out. No cinnamon at all, it can be an interpretation of what this inoffensive smoky scent is because the sweetness I get is only from the berry. The sillage and projection are definitely faint. With most fragrances I'll only do a spray on my chest and maybe two on my clothes and still feels like too much. With Bois Datchaï I do 3 on my body and another 3/4 on clothes. Projects to maybe 8 feet for ~4 hours but never a dominating smell, definitely not for standing out in the club. That is something I might prefer tho and it's still a crowd pleaser. A perfect scent for any occassion, 5am fishing, hot summer working in a warehouse, black tie events, plowing through a blizzard to get groceries, 2pm sunbathing, in the office staring at a screen for 8hrs, waiting for the bus getting soaked by the rain on a muggy day. Expensive white t-shirt vibes and 100% what a goth dude that wears all black should be using in the spring/summer vs a green or citrus. It reminds me of being a kid in the PNW pausing on the way home to pick wild berries, douglas fir trees towering above us dripping rain onto the handle bars of my bike, shaking my hand so I can taste the sour sweetness without getting water down my sleeve. Simply perfect with my DNA.

Boise scents have always held a special place in my heart. While Cedrat Boise leans heavily into the citrus realm, Bois Datchai takes a different route, delving into the world of chai (tea) and incense. I'm delighted by the presence of cinnamon, as it adds a touch of warmth to my senses. It's quite intriguing and amusing how the combination of cinnamon and black tea creates the illusion of a cardamom base, even though cardamom isn't officially listed in the notes. This fragrance makes me want to get closer to the wearer; if they happened to run their fingers through their hair or removed their scarf or jacket, the scent would pique the curiosity of those around, wondering where this delightful fragrance came from. It's not offensive at all; in fact, it's rather pleasant. I can almost imagine smelling this on someone who's enjoying a winter/fall night outdoors. Hours later, Papyrus makes a grand entrance, and I gladly embrace it. After Iris Malikhan, this could be the next bottle I consider purchasing. There's something undeniably captivating about it. I'd reserve this fragrance for special occasions, to impress those individuals for whom I want to smell exceptional. After another hour, I must say it's addictive. It lures you in, evoking that 'I want to hug your arm and savor your scent' kind of feeling. It draws you closer, creating an intense yearning for intimacy. The sillage is moderate to strong and effortlessly engaging. 8.5/10

This is, to my surprise, my biggest scent love ever. The combination of black currants, incense, tea and wood is so unique and well balanced. I have never felt anything like it before. I have the Crivelli discovery set, and this is my absolute favorite of the samples. Iris Malikhân is a true gem aswell, while I find the rest of them too undistinguished or too sharp and intrusive. Bois Datchaï is definitely unisex. The gents should not shy away because of all the berries. The smoke and the woods take away the fruity, girly aspects of them. As some other reviews have mentioned, there is a cummin note in there, and gives me kind of a BO vibe. But very vague, and absolutely not distrurbing. I actually kind of enjoy it. It's most prominent when just sprayed and disappears after a short while. If you get the chance, give this one a try! Even if you don't find the listed notes appealing. You might be pleasantly surprised. Just like me. Edit: Just ordered a 100 ml bottle. Bois Datchaï is by far the most lovely scent I've tried in a very long time. I wonder if I will ever wear any of my other perfumes again...

Smelt good on paper, and luckily even better on skin, wow this stuff was surprisingly good, and actually might be one of my new personal favourites from the brand as of current, very much a dark horse imo. It opens up for me a little smoky and very woody with a little weird bitterness, but then settles down into a beautiful scent that's unique and intriguing in the best possible way. On my skin is a sweet (but quite tame) smooth tea with a touch of fruitiness, sprinkled with a subtle airy and barely present spicy tinge, that morph together with rather smooth and mellow woods. I get a solid medium projection with around 6-7 hours longevity, however it does start to die down projection-wise after about the 3 hour mark. Perfectly unisex imo and in my climate its perfect for any climate outside the blasting heat or most of winter, definitely could be a good officer scent but works as a casual scent as well. Overall it's a hidden gem in my eyes, definitely wish I got my nose on this sooner, 8.7/10 for me.

So very beautiful and evocative... This feels like walking at the edge of an ancient forest while holding a cup of tea. You are tempted to step into the woods but there’s something keeping you from going in because you know you’ll get utterly lost... The black currant note is shy on my skin but it’s there at the edge, it’s juicy but shy. What truly shines on my skin is the woods and it smells amazing!! I love it so much, I am going to have to get a full bottle of this beauty! Longevity: not bad, 4-5 hours. Projection/Sillage: poor and I love it that way!! It’s an intimate scent. Price: yeah, it’s pricey..personally, it’s worth the investment because I would wear it year round. This reminds me of Enchanted Forest by The Vagabond Prince. It’s less pinewoods-y but they vibe the same. Though I have a strong preference for Bous Datchaï. It wears better on my skin. Edit: I just got a full bottle of Bois Datchaï!! I am excited to wear it this Spring, I am going to smell amazing!

Very nice woody fragrance. I get the papyrus note, and the blackcurrant juicing up what otherwise would be an arid cedar/papyrus scene. There is a pronounced cumin/body/skin accord here too that I love in perfume. The obvious reference for me here is Cartier's Declaration, which is a personal favourite. So this effect here is a positive one for me. The Maison Crivelli website lists a leather accord, which would account for this. It's an average performer on my skin, and chugs along nicely as a mostly herby/aromatic/slightly medicinal wood scent. The cumin effect relaxes after a while into the spicy wood/patchouli camphor base. A little incense fizz may also be present in this slight vapor-rub vibe. There is also an undercurrent of generic 'tea'-scent/citrus running through this. I really enjoy the whole thing.

First impression: fresh wood, sauna air, resinous smoke. Not overly warm first, there’s a freshness like birch and berries carried in the wind. It smells like standing outside a Finnish summer cottage when someone’s lighting the sauna and you were just picking berries in the forest, the first curls of smoke rising through pine forest air. The scent of terva (pine tar) touches the air when you add sauna scent with water on the stones and the steam rises - dry, slightly medicinal, but so so comforting. A moment between fire and forest - clean, grounded, and a little wild. The drydown it's black currant and a bit a of patchouli. Love this for the nostalgic part of my memories.

I just love this! It’s become my favorite bedtime fragrance. The strongest note to my nose is the black currant right at the top which fades and leaves behind a hint of juicy berries with soft woods. The papyrus is definitely there and participate to the soft cozy feel of this perfume. I don’t really get the cinnamon, maybe it comes into play layer but I’m already asleep by then! I never wear it in the day because I feel like it wears too close to the skin but I don’t mind. It’s beautiful and calming and I’m probably getting a full bottle after I finish my 50ml. This makes me want to try other maison crivelli scents

Bois Datchaï is definitely musculine. Without seeing the notes I would have thought it definitely has a little bit of oud. Rather unique scent and rather ME or Amouage kinda scent. Somehow smoky woody leathery but quite special scent. Not mass appealing just unsure if the ladies would like smelling this on a night out, though I don't mind wearing this out at night as I think it's a scent or dna I will like better if I wear it more often. It's actually pretty strong on my skin or just nice, any louder would kinda make my nose feel irritated as it's quite sharp to smell. It seems quite linear to me.

I've been searching for a type of non-traditional scent profile similar to Santal 33 for really long. Santal was initially a must buy for me, but I decided not to because you can become a bothering person with it. Finally I found Bis Datchaï! Scent for the rest of my life. Only downside and I mean only one is performance side. If only this would be a little more amped up, it would be 10/10 for ever. I would love if Crivelli decided to make this a 50ml extrait bottle, because all of the extraits I have tried from MC (almost all of them) are incredible little beasts.

After trying a discovery set from Maison Crivelli and testing the samples for 2 months , I ended up purchasing Bois Datchai and Lys Solaberg . I FELL in love immediately with BOIS DATCHAI for several reason and yes it does smell like sweet cumin on my skin I guess our brains translates the smell of the incense note ( coming from the aromatic wood called bois datchai ) to a more known scent to us . This fragance takes me back to my childhood and lovely memories , reminds me of eating a fruit under a tree while it is raining .

Wood, leather and raspberries is what I get and I’m not mad at it. The combination is strangely alluring and it was pretty much love at first smell. I sprayed some on instore, loved it immediately, but went about my business. I had to return to buy it 🥰. Longevity and projection aren’t massive, but that wouldn’t fit with the kind of scent that it is, if that makes sense..? This reminds me of Mmmm... by JHAG but not as strong and sickly sweet, a lot more suitable to wear everyday.

Lovely. Immediately opens with warm cedar like a dry sauna with a hint of dark-fruit sweetness; my initial guess was black plum, but after seeing the listed note is black currant that totally makes sense. The tea, incense and a touch of patchouli that come in make for an incredibly warm, inviting fragrance that’s woody in all the right ways: not too sharp, not too sweet, not too smoky, not too green. Another day-to-night, year round formulation from MC.

IMO - this has some resemblance to BDK Gris Charnel Extrait (and the EDP one). Although its not a listed note i definitely get some hints of fig, which is probably just the black currant tricking my nose. Smells incredible and bottle-worthy but I only tested it on my skin in store and it smelled similar to Gris Charnel which i already have although the dry downs are definitely a bit different. I ended up going with Iris Malikhan.

I get the black currant and tea right away. Then the papyrus (smell of books). I love the gentle nature of this one. Only did a spray on wrist and one in the shirt. The dry-down on skin is a little medicinal to me, like eucalyptus (maybe it’s the cinnamon), but I would love to get a full bottle of this. Fresh and light enough to wear year-round. My first non-screechy tea scent. (Arden Green Tea is too sharp to me).

Everyone wears scents differently. On my skin this is gorgeous tea scent with sweet incense and blackcurrant jam. The tea, smoky cedar incense and blackcurrant stays with me throughout 5-6 hours of wear. It appears at first to be ghostly fleeting, but it doesn't want to leave you totally alone. It's very cosy, summer evening scent. I love MC DNA - It's unassuming at first glance, but has a complex heart.

This is such a nice smell! Very fresh, and has a really interesting profile. It smells vastly different in the drydown compared to the initial spray. It opens with a really sharp tea smell, and then, at least on my skin, ends up being very sweet, with a strong smell of black currant and smoke. I sense zero cumin. Love it.

I don't understand the low rating of this perfume.....The perfume smells really nice and unique! This is woody, fruity and black tea fragrance, that is suitable for all seasons. The performance is good. I love this perfume!!!

Just bought this. It's lovely - rich, bright blackcurrant + smoke + coniferous smells. I'm not usually a fan of the latter on my skin, but this is such a perfectly balanced blend it really works.

Bois Datchaï is quite an unusual scent, much stronger than the other Crivelli scents I've tried so far. It is a fruity-woody scent, featuring a prominent blackcurrant note up top, all on a dry, amber base. It is evocative of several images while managing to be a cohesive scent. It is more lightweight than its dark, intense opening suggests, making it more versatile and appropriate for warmer weather. BD has a dark, boozy opening, with ripe fruit evident from initial spray. The blackcurrant is intense, initially reminiscent of a blackcurrant liqueur, but becoming increasingly juicy and lush as the scent progresses. The dark woods follow closely, together with the blackcurrant forming the crux of this scent. A herbal green undertone emerges after a little while, adding a nice, fresh counterpoint to the fruity-woody accord. It is almost evocative of a vineyard (with grape standing in for blackcurrant, of course!). As it develops, cinnamon adds its distinctive sweet spiciness to this scent, melding nicely with the aforementioned vine accord. The papyrus note becomes surprisingly prominent after a little while, dry and aromatic. A cloud of patchouli adds a nice earthiness to the base, in the manner of a modern chypre. Incense adds a smoky effect to the base, dry and slightly balsamic. The fruity-woody accord becomes smooth and waxy, reminiscent of crayons as mentioned below in several reviews, and the wood is more polished mahogany than trees. The drydown is dry, woody and amber-y, becoming musky as it fades. Sillage and longevity are moderate, and it is a unisex, transeasonal scent. An unusual, compelling composition that still manages to be wearable, BD is a cleverly-composed fruity-woody scent with points of interest. I really liked this. 4/5.

Amazing scent profile. If you usually love warm spicy, woody perfumes, this is a very safe blind buy. Absolutely unisex, leaning masculine perhaps but the black current definitely saves it from being exclusive to men. Unfortunately, performance is not great at all. You will need to spray even more than how you often spray an EDT. Doesn't last on skin or clothes, maybe if you sniff really closely but longevity and projection are basically non-existent. Will need to use a few times more for the full review. For now it's a moderate like. Could have been a strong love if the performance was not so bad. Update July: Yeah performance is still very bad. It does smell a bit BO after a while, but i don't mind. Just, the performance is way too bad, like 3-4 hours longevity max if overspraying and intimate projection, it feels like a scent you'd wear at home rather than outside. Save your coins and buy gris charnel extrait instead they're not the same at all but kinda similar. Man such a shame cuz i love the scent a lot. Will let it sit out a bit more, hope the performance will get better. Update Aug: Found a way to use this. Mix with Jimmy Choo Fever and it creates this most beautiful scent that is spicy, yummy without being too womanly and flirty. It basically makes JC Fever for professional, complex and suitable for the office. Also somehow makes both scents last much longer. Just the best combo I have found recently.

Hah!!!! No way! I haven't smelled Feminite du bois for years, but I did recently acquire a formula for it and made it up. Bois datchai instantly reminded me of it and I made the comparison to FdB in a recent review on IG not knowing whether the formula I had made really did smell like the Shishedo/Serge fragrance (I recalled a much more plummy cedar but like I said genuinely couldn't remember it) but seeing others have made the connection here makes me feel vindicated and props to my pal who sent me the formula. Anyway, this is clearly much more refined and subtle than the one I knocked up, but the overriding sense is of a black tea in the opening and a progressively spiced wood, based around that kind of Sheldrake, cedar architecture. The freshness and greener quality is essentially from rosewood, which is rich in natural linalool which works across the board with everything in this. ie: tea/wood I really like it, I love that it doesn't rely on musks (particularly) or sweet or pleasantly palatable perfumery notes, and yet it's not challenging either. The Femininte du bois references could be reductive too because I've not smelled it for so long but this stands it's ground and regardless revisiting that era/corner of perfumery might not be such a bad idea? If you're a fan of L'Artisan perfumer or Serge Lutens this is nod in your direction.

This instantly reminded me of The Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest but better! EF is definitely the enchanted forest (almost twee), whereas Bois Datchai is the real forest, ever-so-slightly decaying but mostly fresh and coniferous, brisk air (that slightly mentholated edge reminds me of chilly air). I'm very sensitive to cumin, BO-like smells and I know what other reviewers are referring to, but it does not bother me in the slightest. It doesn't register to me like true cumin, either. I think it's actually the woods combined with minty berries used in this that's giving off that vibe. It's just has a bit more body or skin for a forest. It really is evocative of a place and activities within that place. Picking wild berries in a shady conifer forest, pine needles decaying and wet from dew and mist in the morning. It's really beautiful, and I was immediately taken with the urge to go on a walk. Perfect for fall.

A really well blended and unique scent. I went into the store interested in Neroli Nasimba, which is also really good, but left with this instead. Its opening is amazing fruits which dries down to some tea and wood. I don’t get the comparisons to old books or libraries to be honest. It’s a subtle scent that you find yourself catching smells of when it’s least expected, and it’s only downside is that you need to overspray this one if you want it to last all day and at this price point, it’s a shame. You really are paying for quality blends and ingredients. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this is full of natural oils and extracts aside from the leather accord, which incidentally I don’t get much of anyway. It’s super unique too, I left with this because Neroli smelled too similar to other fragrances. Also, it reminds me of Oud Maracuja but without the Oud. Make of that what you will!

I wore this without looking at the notes or the Maison Crivelli description. Here’s what I got: Leathery blast initially which fades after 60 seconds. An astringent almost bitter berry scent which had me thinking blackberry. Green tea leaves. A warm spice began to radiate. Woods. Something stinky? Almost like cumin. Smoothed smoked background. I really like this scent. You can really pick out and appreciate the notes in this one. Don’t be put off because the stink is in a good way and blends into the spice nicely. I feel it’s a good everyday scent for cool but not cold weather. The performance is not as great as other scents in this line so spray a spritz or two more than normal. Another perfectly unisex scent as well.

It could be wandering the forest, with thermos flask full of hot tea. Silent joy, independence and freedom. Comfort in wildreness. But... black currant is not a forest berry and our subconscious knows it. Somehow I find it inappropriate in the composition. It adds sweetness and juiciness but robs the mystery. With it, the fragrance is beautiful - but also on purpose. Not an essence of experiences in the forest - more the syntetic perfume for sale. I would enjoy it less likable, less accessible. Anyway the woodiness, the warm, spicy base is alluring. Sillage is intimate, longevity about 4-5 hours.

This is doing something to my brain. I’ve never agreed more with the scent description provided by the brand: "Forest races, crispy wild berries, tangy brambles, summery times. First one home. Cheeky games, smoky tea, spicy bark. Silvery reeds, lively embers, fruity seeds. A crimson moon." Because it’s all there. This is exactly what my experience of the forest smells like. With all different parts of it, some sections more green and/or more pleasant than the others. This perfume captures it perfectly. Forest in a bottle. Love it.

I initially dismissed this due to the sweaty, cumin-like note. It may be the papyrus, as the same thing appears in the opening moments of Bentley Absolute (but persists here). But something keeps drawing me back - I like how it connects with the woods and sweet berry, like an imaginative recreation of a Laotian oud accord with human funk replacing the barnyard animalic. Moreso than Amouage’s Fate Man or L’Artisan’s Al Oudh, this could bring me around to the idea of smelling unwashed in a good way ... maybe.

I really like the blackcurrant and tea notes of this, and the woodsy notes lends them a really nice depth. Probably lasted around 7 hours on my skin. I really love it but it may definitely be too intense for some on first spray: someone I was around right after I put it on said it was turning their stomach. I suspect it's the guaiac or incense notes: they didn't smell overwhelming to me but I think in general those are notes that some respond to more than others, in my experience.

On a tour of Monte Alban, the image of a sacred ceremony, thick with smoke from burning copal trees was described. That's exactly what this smells like. Well, maybe not exactly - Bois Datchai doesn't have the pine-like quality of the copal tree, but the resinous, woody scent, the plume of smoke that follows the warm spiciness and bright berry notes paint a very similar picture. It's not necessarily for me, and it only lasts an hour or two, but it certainly is an interesting scent.

Gorgeous thick woodiness Sticky, tangy blackcurrant Smokey, ashy incense All very hypnotic and a touch narcotic. A wonderful blend of some unexpectedly, harmonious accords. The cumin in here is reminding me of Indian food. If the cumin was taking a bit more of a backseat, this would be a 'love'. Also, unfortunately, far too intimate in projection for me. VERDICT: The opening was to die for, but the dry-down was a let-down. ALMOST full-bottle-worthy, but not quite.

Beautiful blackcurrant and tea scent, with a bit of an old-world feel. I asked my daughter for her opinion before ordering and she said it smells like her grandmother's house. And it does. I don't want to smell like my ex-mother-in-law's house, though.

OK on the blotter -- instant LOVE. On skin, however, there is something BO-ish I cannot get past. At first I thought there had to be a cumin note in here, but now I'm wondering if its the blackcurrant.

A pleasantly smoky black tea with a predominant incense note. Elegant and relaxing, it is a fragrance that evokes a solitary afternoon walk under one of those gray autumn skies.

Imagine an upper-class setting in 19th century England, in the writing room. Parchment, ink, and old books. Someone has put down their pipe on the desk to pour a cup of tea.

That's actually very pretty and interesting. Blackcurrant is juicy, yet not too savoury. Combined with prominent tea and smoky woods. Something alluring about this. 7/10

What an interesting scent. It definitely smells like black currant and incense! But also ashtray? Not sure what is happening to my nose here.

Love it in bottle, on paper and on clothes, with my skin the incense or cumin note take over in like 1 minute and nothing else is visible.

Strong yummy blackcurrant opening with interesting mix of spices and woods. But within a few minutes there was something I couldn’t quite put my finger on that was going against my fancy. Perhaps it’s the cinnamon. Or maybe the tea and patchouli base. But then it hit me. I recently sampled Crivelli’s Osmanthe Kodoshan which should have been a fragrance of interest to me judging by the notes. But I had to scrub right off, putting it down to the combo of anise, tea, patchouli and tobacco. It was reminiscent of a savoury Thai Tom Yum soup in an unpleasant kind of way. Comparing the notes of Osmanthe Kodoshan and Bois Datchai, there is some similarity - Bois has substituted cinnamon for anise, incense for tobacco, tea and patchouli remaining constant. Although Bois is MUCH more pleasant and wearable, I have a bit of PTSD and their similarities do not vibe with me.

Leans masculine. Differently from the reviews down below, lasted a short time on my skin - 4hrs with intimate sillage, then another hour barely there. Past 5hr mark entirely gone. Knowing that other Crivelli scents are at least average to good performance, this surprised me. Scent profile woody-tea. But something is not balanced as woods overwhelm a lot of nuance this composition might have (and don’t get me wrong, I like strong woody scents). Found little to no resemblance to The Noir by Le Labo. Maybe some smokey-tea aspects in general. But def not dupes, not close to being clones, barely alike.

A dry, incense-laden, papyrus-forward scent that leans more towards the atmospheric than the wearable. The smoky, almost ashy quality dominates, giving the fragrance a stark, almost austere feel. There’s an herbal sharpness woven through, but it never softens enough to truly balance out the papery dryness. It’s complex, certainly, and maybe I'm biased—but this is not something I’d personally reach for. A fragrance that sits at a distance, intriguing in concept but lacking that pull that makes a scent feel inviting.

The headspace of this fragrance is very much like Armani Prive Figuier Eden - a fruity dark image of fig created by the mixture of blackcurrant and pachouli. However, the closer you bring your nose to your skin, the more woody it becomes until it turns into pure incense. I think it's well made and deserves a sampling for sure but it's just not for me. If I want to reach for a fruity woody fragrance, I'd rather reach for Cape Heartache.

Based on the name not at all what I expected. This is very very fruity, and those I just don’t vibe with.. Hoped it will be a lot more ‘bois’ forward, also if you say ‘chai’ I’m gonna assume it will be tea and cinnamon but all I get is stale gummies. This is whatever honestly, I feel like this can’t be anyone’s favorite scent and that is bad enough
