Bali H'ai

You find yourself in a beach resort, driven by the promise of a Shangri-la-like experience. The orange-blossom sunset is disappearing into the pink-rose yonder. You explore the resort, meeting people you think you’ve met before. You find a seat in a restaurant you know you’ve dined in before. Before you, you can see the waves going to sleep under the trance of a darkening starry sky. A person in cream linen finds a seat across you, the enchanting smell of jasmine and coconut captures your attention, once again tightening the spell of this dream-like moment, this Bali Hai’i, over you. You feel like you’ve met before, like this entire journey’s purpose was for this rendezvous. You share a glance, then a smile. Maison de L’Asie’s Bali Ha’i is named after a mystical island, representing something beyond reach, beyond reality. This scent evokes exactly those feelings of longing, mystery, adventure, and charm. It does not scream but rather, invites and enchants. The first notes of jasmine are strong and lasts for at least 2 hours; this jasmine has a spiritual, warm experience. Afterwards, the dry down is a creamy vanilla and coconut without being sweet; a fragrance with a lot of similar notes is Giardini di Toscana’s Borabora which opens with a friendlier jasmine and dries down with a sweet, sugared coconut milk. Bali Ha’i is not that; this masterpiece dries down with the same coconut and vanilla but less sweet and more mature. This scent lasts at least 10-12 hours and longer on clothes, great during the day and perfect for romantic evenings.

As a tropical floral lover, this has been on my radar for a while and I finally got my hands on it! It was worth the wait! Bali Hai opens up strong! Don’t over spray or spray near your face. The coconut and jasmine are intense. The jasmine is a touch sharp, it has a bit of a piercing quality like salt. Thick vanilla and ylang ylang come in shortly after. The mid is rich, heavy and opulent. It thins out a little in the dry down with the tobacco and cedar. I don’t detect patchouli as a note, just a bit of scratchiness around the early mid that goes away quickly. I’m very sensitive to patchouli and that kept me from trying this for over a year. I get amazing longevity and a fairly large sillage. This is a powerhouse! I just got a sample of this and gosh, it’s gorgeous. I’m surprised no one else has mentioned the similarity to TF’s Soleil Blanc (one of my great favorites). I’m hoping this has better longevity! If it does, I’ll simply have no choice but to buy a bottle! I love the white floral and coconut.the stuff that I just mentioned is just a couple of reasons why I love this sent.

To me, this reads more as frangipani (plumeria) than jasmine, and it’s such a gorgeous tropical vanilla floral. To me this smells a lot like Musicology Sun Goddess, but that’s the only beachy scent it smells like. Beach Walk is much more woody, and Terracotta has an animalic/indolic quality that you won’t find here. Beautiful work, Maison de l’Asie!

Coconut, jasmine, frangipani, and vanilla. Reminds me of Centenario Bois 1920 but much more vibrant and white floral

I blind bought this bottle (I blame you, Fragrantica crowd, for not leaving any reviews to guide me, lol). I just can't resist a coconut note. On first spray, I was surprised by the power of the atomizer--I was attempting a half test spray, but got much more oily juice on my skin than I planned, and the spot took awhile to fade. The oils were probably an indication that this was going to be a heavy hitter, and projection was initally VERY strong. Serious scent cloud moment. On first sniff--heavy, sweet, indolic jasmine with background creamy coconut. It reminds me of HIram Green's Moonbloom (though that scent is green, honeysuckle/tuberose). I was disappointed--first of all, I don't need another jasmine indolic frag--I mean, I have SO many of these on my shelf. I rolled my eyes a bit here. I think this one takes time to develop--a long time--like an hour. After quite a bit of time, Bali H'a blossomed a bit, reminding me of Guerlain Terracotta, decidely tropical with very subtle sweet vanilla as a background player. There's also an emerging base of dry, sweet earthiness or wood, but we will need a nose better than mine to help me out here. On my skin, it's barely there. I'm clearly in the heart of the frag at this point, and the overall effect is at its most beautiful. I think, if you want to swap your Terracotta, ELauder Bronze Goddess, Alien Goddess, or any of the usual suspects of designer tropical perfumes, Bali H'ai is definitely an upgrade--she's a gutsy, sultry, expensive woman of the world. However, I do wish she were a bit more unique, a bit smokier--just a bit more attitude. That being said, she can sit on my shelf until I need another coconut frag, lol.

Hm. Interesting one. The rose is rose-ing in here Lol. So it's not your usual beachy fragrance because of that rose. I'm glad I didn't blind buy this. I love rose but I like my coconut beachy fragrances to free of that note. The only coconut rose I like (well TBH, I haven't really smelled many frags that include both notes) is Tresor Nude. This is a like, I wouldn't throw it out of bed but not a love.

A word a warning: this is heavy and sweet. So, I`d say would work best on cooler summer nights. I would not dare to wear this in the heat of the day, as it only further enhances that hot, cloying quality. Testing it next to Beach Walk - I would choose Bali H`AI over Beach walk because there are more things going on here thus more interesting.

Bali Ha'i would be great for vacation, for summer, plesant, floral/ gourmand with creamy coconut and vanilla, will be awesome to take vacation on Bali and spend beautiful time there with company of Bali Ha'i

On my skin, a powdery, lactonic, jasmine and a slight rose scent. The jasmine brings some freshness to this dense fragrance, not suitable for high heat weather. It is akin to a slight coconuty lotion, and thus i feel it’s a feminine leaning scent. This reminds me of very common designer perfumes for women. A little cloying everytime i get a whiff of it. So far my least favourite among the Singapore and Indonesia collection that i have worn from Maison De Lasie, overall a hard pass. Longevity 7hrs, Projection 7/10. Overall 5/10

This opens with very green and fragrant jasmine and coconut. As it dries down it gets a little powdery but the jasmine and coconut remain. The vanilla sweetens it up just enough but not in a gourmand way. The patchouli gives it just enough spice to keep it well rounded. Decent longevity and sillage - 5-6 hours. It’s growing on me - the greenness of the jasmine is refreshing and not a heady floral.

Smells like a cute old lady haha you really smell the coconut in the dry down like at 4 hours. I enjoyed the dry down it was like coconut water. Other than that it’s a fresh powdery jasmine and a tinge of coconut here and there. I get some wiffs that smell like sunscreen during its life. Was a nice try from scent bird. Good longevity and projection. I got like 6-8 solid hours.

Coconut and vanilla but with maximum powder. Jasmine disappears quite quickly. I prefer a more vibrant tropical floral so I’m not sure how I feel about this, but it is winter so I think I’ll revisit this in the summer heat. Edit: Summer didn’t make a difference in its dry down or performance. Oh well.

Coconut, florals, vanilla , and all the great reviews, what's not to like? Well, unfortunately the patchouli and tobacco leaf ruin it for me. It gives off 2 different vibes at the same time. If you dislike patchouli ,this could be a deal breaker . I am disappointed because the opening was pretty!

So glad I stuck to my guns and only bought a sample of this. Tons of influencers saying this is the new IT fragrance to have this summer. They must be joking because to me this smells like straight baby powder and chemical sun screen. Will have to pass.

I'm convinced as many have pointed out about this brand - that they flood fragrantica with fake ratings. They even admitted to doing so in a comment on a fragrantica article claiming they are just reflecting older customer reviews. I think this frangrance has too been flooded with fake ratings. I mean c'mon - over 30 ratings saying this is great value when its £220 for 50ml, nonsense. Also the tons of ratings for “enormous” sillage - nonsense again, be aware this is not a beast mode scent. Its a simple, light vanilla, coconut summer scent that is quite powdery and baby wipe like - I enjoy it. 5/6hrs longevity max. I think its nice but its very basic. It is not the complex, expensive summer fragrance it was promised to be. The brand also creeps me out. Its you believed in your product you would not need to lie. Get a sample, don't buy into the hype.

With this house all the top notes smells the same to me, but they settle down differently. It smells like really great sunscreen when dried down, or a forced tropical perfume. It smells like the Hawaiian themed Universal Orlando hotel. I mostly get musk and coconut. Every perfume in this house has a very smooth scent, like drinking milk. Most of the the floral notes dissipate quickly, leaving coco-musk. It should be summer themed but the heaviness gives winter. It’s like wearing a fur coat with pink flamingos on it in the middle of summer to go to a beach.

Starts off great but the dry down is horrid! Couldn’t wait to get this off me! Guerlain is far superior to this.

Awful, sickeningly sweet, synthetic, jumbled mess. What is the point of this fragrance? I cant surmise one.

I like this perfume. I'm a bit surprised as I didn't care for it at all on paper. As a few reviewers have mentioned, it opens with a blast of jasmine. The change to coconut/vanilla happens quickly. I also get something at about 2 hours in that is akin to leather. This is diffferent from my other beachy type perfumes. Not a hot sunny day perfume. More of an evening with a breeze or a cooler, rainy summer day perfume. Not sure I'd get a full bottle due to the price. It's very expensive - $95 for 15 ml. $205 for 50ml. I've no idea how the ratings skew toward very affordable. That seems crazy to me! I can't imagine that is correct. Also, not sure how so many people found the longevity long lasting or eternal. I'm a little more than 2 hours in an am quite sure it won't last more than 3 or 4 hours on me. Edited to say I was wrong about the longevity! I had initially sprayed about 9 pm. Turns out, I could still smell this faintly the following morning. As soon as we get a a cooler day, I'll spray in the morning and see how long it lasts on me. Also, the scent that I took for leather must have been the tobacco leaf. I'm going to try my sample a few times and possibly consider a 5 ml decant as the next step.
