Grand Soir

There are perfumes that announce themselves and then there are those that arrive. Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Grand Soir belongs firmly to the latter. It unfolds not with urgency, but with quiet authority. From the first breath, you are met with a burnished glow of amber rich, resinous, and impossibly smooth like candlelight reflecting off polished wood in a dim Parisian salon. There is a sweetness here, yes, but it is not naive or cloying. It is the sweetness of restraint: vanilla rendered dry and dignified, benzoin that hums rather than shouts, tonka that lingers like a memory rather than a declaration. Grand Soir is, at its heart, a gourmand, but one dressed in a tailored evening coat. It does not smell edible so much as comforting, like warmth itself given form. It wraps around the wearer in a way that feels both composed and deeply human. There is confidence in it, but not the brittle kind. This is confidence softened by experience, by charm, by a certain ease in one’s own presence. It invites rather than intimidates. In colder climates, it comes alive. Autumn air sharpens its edges just enough; winter gives it purpose. The fragrance blooms in the contrast between warmth and cold, like stepping indoors from frost into golden light. It is an evening companion perfectly at home in quiet conversations, dimly lit rooms, or those playful nights where formality dissolves into laughter and closeness. What makes Grand Soir remarkable is its balance. It never tips too far into sweetness, never becomes heavy despite its richness. It is rounded, seamless, almost architectural in its construction every note placed with intention, every transition fluid. Worn well, it does not feel like something added. It feels like something revealed. A gentleman’s fragrance, certainly but not in the rigid, antiquated sense. Rather, it is the scent of a man who understands presence: warm, assured, and quietly magnetic.

There are some fragrance categories that I no longer gravitate toward as a consumer, not because I no longer enjoy scents of that type, but specifically because I've purchased a fragrance that, to my nose, is the best possible example of its particular classification, and I'm just not interested in trying to improve upon it. For me, in the case of ambers, Grand Soir is that fragrance. It's what I think of as "textbook" in the genre, and quite apart from my usual preferences, it's completely safe, not particularly daring or dark, unchallenging, and has zero rough edges, but even still, it has more or less closed the door on amber scents for my foreseeable future. And I'm okay with that. There is admittedly something sort of bittersweet to the arrival of that moment since it means that a particular leg of the fragrance journey has come to a close, but ultimately I think it's really important to take a step back every now and then to admit when you're completely satisfied with something. The term "holy grail" gets tossed around far too much in these instances, and I think descriptions like that turn a collecting hobby into something more serious than it needs to be. I'd offer up "finish line" instead. GS is a syrupy amber, which is what I gravitate toward. It feels as though you're dripping in amber. However, that may not be the specific vibe you're looking for, and if that's the case, more power to you. For a more pillowy amber, MPEG's Ambre Precieux is excellent, and if the idea of amber conjures up dryer connotations for you, Fort & Manle's Amber Absolutely is worth a try (although I own the original formulation in the black bottle and cannot attest to the quality of the new stuff). But for me, this is where the sidewalk ends on amber, and I'm happy with that. It feels good to reach a destination in a hobby that so often feels like a hamster wheel. This one's a 10, no question.

One of my favorite fragrance reviewers is Seldomly Often; he described his journey with Grand Soir through the lens of the Dunning-Kruger effect, starting his niche journey as a self-proclaimed "expert," he once dismissed it as too simplistic, only to return to this recently and find himself completely captivated by it. I know exactly what he means. Grand Soir is deceptively simple, and that simplicity is its greatest attribute. It opens with a brief fresh note (a hint of mandarin?) before settling into what it truly is: a warm, linear, deep amber composition that doesn't chase complexity for complexity's sake (ie; Diaghilev). It captures amber not just as a note, but as a FEELING, capturing the feeling of fall light, golden and unhurried. There's something very relaxing and meditative about this fragrance. No dramatic twists, no big transitions. Just a beautiful, sustained idea rendered with quiet confidence. Once you stop waiting for it to do something and simply let it be, you realize it's already done everything it needed to. I came back to this one years after dismissing it, and I won't be putting it down again. Cosidering its exceptional longevity and projection, I consider it a good value as well:)

I finally got a decant of this to wear for the skin test after smelling it multiple times in store and OMG. I fear I might need to splurge on a full size. I found the opening to be a bit masculine leaning (guessing due to the lavender as it tends to be a bit harsh on my skin) but once it settles, it becomes such a gorgeous ambery and resinous vanilla. I love the warmth of the labdanum in this, and musk makes it so seductive. I just can't get enough of it. And god this lasts! For some reason, it brings me back memories of travelling to Karlovy Vary with my family in my teenage years and staying at an old baroque boutique hotel. It smells like lacquered wooden floors and plasterwork. It makes me want to go to Europe and dine at an old fancy restaurant listening to jazz in candlelight. This is what old money smells like because it's so classy and sophisticated. It doesn't try hard but you can tell how refined it is. It really deserves all the hype for the good reasons! I haven't worn this going out yet to test projection but ill explain what i smell here: opens up kind of medicinal and sharp, i get this Naxos vibe, smells like the tobacco in Naxos but replace the honey with this rich amber smell. i cant smell the orange and the lavender there too. after 15min of dry down it really opens up: it is an amazing not too sweet deep resinous and rich amber smell, its not a thick scent, but it is very strong on the nose up close. it is so well blended that i don't even smell each note in this when it dries down. i just smell this very rich amber smell with just tiny additions to it like a slightly spicy from the lavender and resinous from the benzoin, but this scent is one as a whole. definitely a special occasion smell, if you have the money then sure it can be a signature winter scent easily. could still smell it on my skin hours after I took a shower, love those type of fragrances lol.

when i first applied this i knew immediately it would be too strong for me. i tend to prefer more skin scents with intimate sillage, and this projects quite a bit that being said, i do love how it smells so i do not really mind! there was a hint of something slightly fruity at the start that i could not place at all, but it disappeared pretty quickly if this is what amber is meant to smell like, then i might actually be an amber fan? the vanilla here has this kind of kick to it. it is not the type of vanilla i would usually gravitate toward for myself, but i really appreciate what it is doing in this fragrance. it feels very unique to me if i smelled this on a man i think i might lose my mind in the best way possible the musk in the opening was a bit much for me at first, but the dry down is just perfectly balanced. everything comes together in a way that feels really cohesive and impressive!

This is the smell of a man who has already decided. Who stopped explaining himself sometime around his thirty-eighth birthday and never started again. Most fragrances want you to like them. Grand Soir doesn't want anything. Grand Soir just is, the way a scar just is, the way debt just is, warm and pemanent and completely indifferent to your feelings about it. Eight hours later it's still there. You've eaten, worked, failed at something small, and it's still there. That's not a fragrance. That's a position. Buy it. Wear it alone. Don't tell anyone what it cost. That's the whole point. You know, and the knowing is enough, and if you need it to be more than enough you should probably buy something else.

grand soir is beautiful, warm, and deeply comforting. the vanilla is definitely there, it’s rich, smooth, and resinous. when you first spray it, it comes off quite masculine, and even as it dries down it continues to lean that way on my skin. in the middle, there’s a moment where the vanilla softens everything just enough and adds a quiet femininity, making it wearable for feminine people who aren’t afraid of carrying a heavier undertone. that’s something i love. as time passes, the cedar in the base becomes more noticeable, and i think that’s what really reinforces the masculine edge of the scent. that woody finish grounds everything and gives it structure. overall, it feels cozy in a very specific way, like sitting next to a fireplace late at night. most importantly for me, it doesn’t cause any nausea at all. it’s warm, enveloping, and genuinely beautiful.

On my skin, ‘Grand Soir’ is like being wrapped in a thick, golden curtain of amber and benzoin, with warm vanilla light poured over the top. It starts slightly sharper and resinous for a few minutes, then it melts into this smooth, glowing cloud that feels less like “perfume” and more like a mood: quiet, cosy, a little bit churchy, a little bit Paris at night. There are hints of orange and lavender in the background, but they don't distract from the rich resins, soft vanilla and tonka, which hum along very pleasantly for many hours. It’s sweet, but never cheap or sticky – more like the air of a patisserie drifting through an old building than a dessert on your plate. I reach for it when I want comfort with gravitas. It is the olfactory equivalent of dim lamps and heavy blankets! Easily a 9/10 amber for me. I highly recommend this fragrance! ⛪🕯️🧡

I was really afraid it would give off an old-school, dated vibe, but it didn't!!! Not at all to me.Although it has a grand, majestic aura that can bring in mind such places. In the opening, it kicks off with an amazing, sweet, and luxurious scent of benzoin , a warm, sweet resin that feels almost like honey , which has a slightly scorched spicy edge that tricks the nose and brings to mind spices like cinnamon , even though it's not officially listed. However, as time goes on, it actually ends up feeling stereotypically masculine. Even so, it remains a fragrance that a woman could easily wear if she wants to. For me, it's the second-best fragrance after 540 from the MFK house out of all the ones I've smelled so far. And strangely enough, I think it somehow reminds me of Christmas. Amazing delicious frangrance

An exceptionally refined amber fragrance and one of the most comforting scents I have ever worn.

Just a heads up, MFK seems to have just had a massive price increase on their website. If you’re not located in Europe, international prices went through the roof and it’s no longer cheaper to buy directly from MFK. Once you add import duties, taxes, and, courier handling fees, it’s just ridiculous. LVMH lost their damn minds. Try and grab this beauty from a local store in person or online before they follow suit and raise their prices, too. Edit: for me, a Canadian, a 70 mL bottle of Grand Soir used to cost €160 in December 2022. It was sold out during the holidays and I couldn’t buy one. The exact same bottle is €235 now, an increase of €75... absolutely ridiculous! I have now downgraded my rating from “okay” to “way overpriced” on the scale above. Fuck you, LVMH.

This is hands down my favorite fragrance of all time. I could talk for hours about the scent and how complex and rich it, etc. Overall, Grand Soir is a warm vanilla fragrance for those grand nights in the wintertime. It projects greatly for the first 5 hours which is more than enough and last for a total of 16 hours on my skin which is remarkable for the least. One thing about this fragrance is that I can’t actually really smell the amber in it, which is actually a good thing as I am not the biggest fan of amber. My advice for anyone reading this wanting to know more about it is to try it and smell it on your skin, this advice goes for every single fragrance on earth.

Super masculine and sophisticated. This is my go-to date night and special occasion scent. I was looking for something to fill that role in my collection, and Grand Soir beat out options like The One EDP, Givenchy Gentleman Reserve Privé, Layton, Stronger With You Intensely, and Naxos. Those were all good but not great in my opinion. It’s warm, slightly sweet, a little smoky, and extremely smooth. There’s a refined, grown-up feel to it that’s confident without trying too hard, just effortlessly polished. Performance is strong with great longevity and projection, but it won’t overwhelm a room. This is exactly how I want to smell when I walk into a room.

This is an absolutely beautiful scent. It smells classic and timeless- not modern, but not dated either. The vanilla here reminds me of Shalimar, though the perfumes themselves do not smell the same. The labdanum, benzoin, and amber make this scent rich both meanings of the word. The name suits this scent- it's made for fancy occasions. But considering that I work in academia in the rural United States, soirees and balls are not on my social calendar. I view this scent like a piece of ornate French Renaissance furniture- beautiful to behold but it doesn't match my life style so it comes off as out of place and impractical.

I hesitated for a decade before trying MFK "Grand Soir" primarily because of the full-bottle cost. I rarely sample a sizable decant just for the sake of sampling. I generally sample perfumes with the intent of purchasing full bottles if the fragrance works for me. I won't repeat all of what others have said. But I will say Grand Soir is positively gorgeous. It's the seamless blending of the ingredients that makes this fragrance so special. Leans quite feminine for an amber-centric perfume. Grand Soir is beautiful. I love it. Still, I'm unsure I can justify the cost of a full bottle.

First Niche Fragrance i fell in love with, bought a sample two years after smelling it, it's still a very good sweet powdey yet unique and mature scent, but the labdanum gives it a leathery-ish edge which make's this one a little bit to mature for me to wear in my 20s lmao, great scent, sits closer to the skin but is truly a masterpiece! i see why people feel like this one smells like church/oldman/bookshelfs/oldbook etc. , but fragrances are subjective! and note/smells are connected to our memories BUT for me this one is truly nostalgic, sexy and elegant!

My personal all time favorite winter/special occasion fragrance, as well as my most complimented fragrance. A strong amber scent with a hint of vanilla and a nice subtle twist of lavender and labdenum. A very mature scent, almost reminiscent of a pumpkin pie or a warm vanilla pastry with a mature twist, suitable for older audiences or those who like more mature scents. Lasts up to 12 hours with 5 sprays with a strong sillage that projects very well without overpowering yourself or those nearby. Overall, a great scent for a slightly expensive price point.

This is easily the best amber, by leaps and bounds...not interested in all these ambers that smell like attics, nursing home, dead person’s house, or a Chinese medicine shop...Grand Soir smells so perfect...ambery enough, with a smoky/resinous quality, without going too far...the inclusion/interweave of the lavender note is ingenious...just the right serving of vanilla...everything just masterfully blended....with performance nearing beast mode (but not in an obnoxious way)...definitely hovering in masterpiece territory

Apparently I am 10 years late to the party! But glad to have finally arrived! To me, this is a masterpiece. I love that it doesn’t have a ton of notes. The way these ones mingle is perfection to me. All the best parts of amber are here. It’s deep, resinous and the vanilla dry down is gorgeous - non gourmand but with a soft subdued sweet edge. A previous review described this as what James Bond would wear. Spot on! Plus I love imagining myself as a femme James Bond when I rock it.

You can tell off of the first smell that this fragrance is extremely well made with amazing ingredients. It doesn't force whoever's smelling it to do any guesswork. Very amber and vanilla forward, but it is one of the best ambers I've had the pleasure of smelling. Very expensive, however, and may not be worth the price for the simplicity it offers. It is not groundbreaking, but it really does smell amazing. Performance and sillage are both above average but nothing offensive.

Some of these comments under here are either just brain dumb or rage baiters, everyone has their own taste but i think grand soir tops it and wins it on all sides. Very inviting and warm scent, if you wanna impress your date this is the way to go i would say, very masculine and subtle fragrance where you feel like a king, no overwhelming sweetness bs or oud, just a very warm amber and vanilla which works, projects and lasts. Got myself a 200ml cuz why the fuck not. 10/10

Finally got a bottle of this (partial 200ml) and man. I am in love. Best amber-y scent, nothing will beat this in its category. Really versatile, quality you can smell, really high quality stuff. This will make you smell rich, you drive a turbo s to work and wear a suit, a refined and perfected person. Lasts amazingly, projects beautifully, this stuff is worth every single penny. Really recommend this if you have not tried this masterpiece already. 9.1/10

I finally picked this up, and it’s a very ambery, clean, vanilla...somewhat powdery, but still masculine leaning. It’s such a pleasing scent. Very, very smooth and pretty flawless in its execution - it’s just straight up ambery vanilla, and I appreciate the lack of other prominent notes or accords. I’d wear this on a date because the scent is cozy and comforting, and people will want to be near you, your date in particular. 9.2/10

first try didn't like it, went for it again yesterday and damn its great, it lasts an eternity and on me the dry down smells like a really nice vanilla with a little bit of amber and musk, overall great. rating 8,7 (due to price and that there is a lot of competitors with similar dna) I think it beat blonde amber in my mind , but by a slight margin, will have to verify blonde amber again. And gotta buy a whole bottle of this stuff

Got a lot of compliments with this one recently. The smell is good, not an addicting one that you will crave like Amouage Silver Oud, that stuff is like crack. Not sure my favorite just yet. Grand Soir, Out Satin Mood, BR540, Aqua Media or Epom, are good ones I like so far. Long lasting and projects very well. Walked into a super market and a lady followed me into the store to ask what I was wearing, said I smelled really good.

Grand Soir is a masterclass in amber perfumery. It opens with a commanding boozy benzoin that softens into a luminous dusty sweet amber with a cedar backbone and vanilla is a little hidden. Exceptional projection from just 2 sprays, outstanding longevity, and reformulation concerns are unfounded on this batch. Unisex, sophisticated and deeply refined — one of the finest orientals at any price point. Special occasions 10/10.

You might wonder how beautiful a base of amber-vanilla perfume could be, but it really is that beautiful. A very elegant and chic scent you can wear to a fancy dinner. I prefer to wear it in cold weather and at night. Are there better scents in this price range? Yes, there are, but I think this one should be in the collection for its simplicity. It has a lovely feel to it. 10/10

Grand Soir makes me hate living in a warm climate. I just can't wear it enough. It just doesn't get cold enough. But the moment it does, you better believe I'm putting this on. This is a masterpiece. I'd definitely test this first. If you are a collector and this will not be worn often, definitely get a smaller bottle, the scent can be very strong, so you don't need use a lot.

So some months ago I bought a tester of this fragrance and at the time it didn't particularly wow me. But the other day I found the tester bottle with a small amount of the frag still in the bottle, I gave it a sniff and my god, it was so beautiful I bought a 70ml bottle on the spot. I have no idea why it didn't wow me when I first tested it, maybe my nose has matured 😅

Smooth ambery perfection. Slightly medicinal with a beautiful cocoa accord, it's sweet but not overly, well blended, easy to wear, warm and cosy. Surprisingly versatile, I'd wear it all year round but only in the evening/at night, best suited for colder weather. It does perform well, stays getting noticed, I could never get tired of it. Timeless elegance.

I think this is the true FK's masterpiece, not Baccarat rouge..., yes it is more classic and predictable, but what an absolute beautiful creation. It seems slightly unbalanced, to me it's as if it lacked one final ingredient, but perhaps that is what makes it addictively attractive, that "can't get enough of" quality that FK seems to master so well.

nothing can surpass this work of pure art. it's f**king awesome. I could even see a badass woman/fem rocking this. There is really nothing like this, except for clones trying to catch it. Every time I use this, I have the feeling of selling other scents. One of those reminders in life where you are wasting your time with other things.

Winter day in Copenhagen, the beginning of a new journey. You've had to make sacrifices, an amber traded for a vanilla. You wear your coziest sweaters and thickest jackets to protect yourself from what's to come. A cold winter. Safe in your cocoon of tonka and rockrose. Comfort in your amber eyes, one few others can provide.

Simplicity at it’s finest. Nothing special but whatever it does, does the best. Used to wear it before sleeping. I sniffed a 21 batch, that was somewhat weird, it was darker and had a weird smell, however the one i bought was a 24 batch, was clearly better. I even heard a YouTuber say the same.

The opening isn't my favorite, it's almost like an old-fashioned orange blossom powder, but god it's so beautiful after about 10 minutes. This reminds me of Hilary Duff's With Love (RIP), not because of the notes, but it because it evokes that same "warm light in cold snow" feeling.

I think this is beautiful. And I HATE lavender. This is unisex for sure. If you own Shalimar L’essence, you may not need this. They are VERY similar to my nose. Gorgeous, long lasting, sillage sits close. I love it, but I have Shalimar. May not be FBW as I like Shalimar better.

This is one of the greatest Winter fragrance of all time. The opening is a bit tea kinda thing, but when it dries down, a Great combination of vanilla, amber and Tonka appears. Personally, i loved it. You guys should try this. Do not blind-buy this, but go check it out.

sophisticated smooth classy old ballroom fragrance. i don’t find myself wearing this during the day, only late at night or maybe on a gloomy day in autumn. man this smells like old money, like listening to salvatore from lana del rey dayum what a masterpiece 9.2/10

This perfume is amber done right. Just pure, raw, amber accord done to perfection. You will not find dried fruits (Blonde Amber), incense (Ambra Aurea), woods (Lustre), or booze (Ambre Russe). Also perfect for layering as it is just raw amber. 10/10 masterclass.

I bought it blind buy and to be honest the best amber vanilla masculine fragrance ever I love it and it’s nuclear I thought no one can smell me but about 5-8 people asks me about it great sillage just wow the only fragrance I didn’t regret getting

Wore this today. I used to have a full bottle but I don’t wear it often enough so I now just have a decant. Sunny today in the high 50’s in California. OMG it is so so so so good! I’m a woman in my 30’s. This is totally unisex but I adore it.
