On A Date

This isn’t my daily wear nor do i think it works fantastically with my skin but it will probably be something with a special place in my heart for years to come. I’ve never had a scent that I’ve placed emotional importance/value in (besides the near empties my flatmate gave me as we were moving out after uni ended) besides this one - i tried it in the airport as I was heading home after graduation and the smell stayed for the entire 20-hour journey, developing from a juicy grape-y rose to a more musky floral over the different times i sniffed it on my wrist. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I got one off a secondhand marketplace. My first designer fragrance — if you could count this as one. I literally held back from using it because of how the longevity was jackshit from the Hong Kong summer humidity, but in true fashion of living up to the fragrance’s name I had it on the last time I saw a guy I really liked because it was a declaration of my feelings even though only I knew about it. The time we met before that I went into his bathroom and found his only two scents in the same bottles as this one — when the rain stops smelled heavenly on him and I suppose that also compelled me to want to match with him, even though I don’t think he knew. It all sounds a little stupid but on a date reminds me of when i’m on a date. Not any date but a date where in the moment you know you’ll remember this for months to come, so you start trying to remember every single fleeting moment and you unconsciously start grieving the time passing you by. The sweet opening of this scent can be a bit cloying for the first second, but the rose and pink pepper comes forward immediately and it’s something I want to smell all the time, but also sparingly because it’s so intensely sultry and decadent that I can’t handle it on me every day. It’s the only bottle that evaporates a little and I can smell from my desk in my room, and whenever I catch a whiff I think of those summer nights in August where I’m sat by the sea having a really good talk and at the same time looking over at my company every ten seconds or so as if I could see on his face if he wanted to kiss or not. I don’t normally like rose scents - they’re usually either too sharp or too dusty, and it’s not my style — I’m a soapy, clean, fresh spicy kind of person, but this is the one sweet floral fragrance I have and love with all my heart.

. ~ imagine the song, 'days of wine & roses' in a bottle? here she is. how romantic! 🌹🍷🥂🍾🥀 . a blind buy. the scent story takes you to the vineyards of provence, france. perfect concept for me, because i love wine! ive worked in wine, as well as visited many wineries and tasting rooms. despite being an eau de toilette, the performance is good. lasts on my skin for as long as an eau de parfum. noticeable on clothing for even longer. . reviews warned that this is a mature scent. they are correct. i find 'on a date' very reminiscent of mid-century vintage fragrances. a dated elegance. quite feminine, yet, i think a well-dressed man could wear it too. im not usually interested in this style of fragrance for my personal taste. however, this one offers a number of beautiful notes that i really love. imagine a fruit-forward sparkling rosè. a freshly uncorked chilled bottle. you taste the notes of cherry and strawberry. the zip of pink peppercorn. crisp champagne swirled with tannins. settling in is a dark sweetness from black currant liquor and concord grapes. aromatic elements from davana, a medicinal herb from india. this is a plant id be interested in finding live someday. devana is known to replicate the scent of dried fruits, with balsamic undertones. i see why the perfumer added this note to 'on a date.' . on the first spray, im greeted with a heavy dose of powdery english rose. a fragrance description by maison margiela reads, "the delicate yet decisive character of wild roses." the dry down leaves lingering green must of bergamot and patchouli. tangy vetiver sinking in. this classic performance is something one would find from inside a half-empty macereted bottle at an estate sale. maybe a frosted glass perfume placed on a vanity tray. . i love how bunches of ripe grapes smell. grapes set in the sunshine heat up and produce the best fruit fragrance. as a limited seasonal product, trader joes sells cartons of rouge-blushed golden grapes. these cute 'honey pearl' grapes remind me of 'on a date.' the grape flavor retains a honeyed sweetness, with floral notes of lychee.

The vial for this one has automatically been the one I’ve consistently reached for in my discovery kit. Which really REALLY sucks because the atomizer on the vial is completely gone. All the fragrance gets stuck inside the actual atomizer cap, and I have press down the atomizer to fill the cap just so I can take it off and dab it. VERY inconvenient, but I still am willing to do solely because I genuinely really like this. I myself have never really smelled a black currant fragrance, but to me this smells almost like a woodsy vetiver with a subtle sweet-earthy rose. This is masculine, strong, and it stands on it’s own compared to a lot of the discovery kit which is mostly aldehydic linen fragrances, which I actually really like. But I feel like this one standing out so much says a lot. I honestly couldn’t tell you this had rose in it before seeing the pyramid, the deep, rich note which I could only describe as possibly being the black currant. I originally confused this with Under the Stars, which I can most definitely say I DO NOT like. But this, luckily, is a whole different beast. This is what I imagine an older, silver fox of a man who dressed very plainly but well, sweaters, chinos, chukka boots. He is rather unassuming, not too tall or too short, but something just tells you that even if this man is a bachelor for his age, he has his whole life together. By far the best fragrance in my discovery kit, next to By the Fireplace and Jazz Club. The only difference is between those and this one is that On a Date is much more versatile year round, whereas those two aren’t so much.

I love this fragrance i picked it up yesterday and i adore it. It might become my signature scent even tho i have 30 other perfumes. To me it smells like rose wine, champagne, sour rose, a little bit of blackcurrant with vetiver and a little spice. For me it lasts 24 hours on skin if i dont wash it but for 6-8 hours its pretty good sillage. I love this smell, the brand, the bottle that is refillable with a atomizer you can screw off that is really unique. I also like the box that is minimalistic but still artistic. This is really art. If you have ever been to a open garden restaurant in a grape vine field or anything of this sorts this is how it smells like. Really bougie, reminds you of something but you cant really put your finger on it. Its like a distant memory from your childhood that is slightly blurry and only remembered. I got this in a 100ml bottle for 75$ but i do recommend to smell it first even though i havent met someone that doesnt like the smell of this yet. If you like moschinos toy boy or you re an alcoholic you ll love this, also if you love grapes. The smell of this is a 10/10 for me, price 9/10, sillage 8/10, longevity 10/10, bottle 10/10, box 10/10, overall for me even though it might be biased to some people 9.5/10. But for a date 10/10 since if you re on a date just like the name suggests, you want it to be discovered not for it to ambush the other persons nostrils😭. Overall very nice👍🏻. Btw if you re attractive its really a bonus, if you re chopped it doesnt add anything since appearence and hygiene comes first.

It's strange how many negative reviews there are considering I get constant compliments every time I wear this perfume from men and women (and normally I get none even with expensive/well-liked perfumes). Considering the stark opposition between online opinions and my personal experience, I'd say this isn't a safe blind buy but definitely worth sampling if you're looking for a mature rose scent. I don't find it too sweet like candy as some people describe, nor do I understand how people are getting a cat piss smell. To me, it's a somewhat warm, photo-realistic rose. The wine and blackcurrant do give it a subtle syrupy sweetness that I much prefer to powder, but it's balanced by the earthiness of the moss note. Pretty much equal parts floral, sweet, and herbal. It's not giving grandma like a lot of rose scents but it also isn't a teenage pick. Perfect for young adulthood. Sillage isn't bold enough to offend anyone, but projects so that people you pass will stop and ask what you're wearing. You also don't need a whole layering routine. A couple sprays alone will have people leaning in obsessed. I wear it to college and work. I think Replica is best for day-to-day and not big events. It lasts through my eight hour shift as a busser, and despite all the sweating and sauce on my apron, people will still tell me I smell good at the end of the night. Nothing compares, and I wish more people would try this scent so I don't feel crazy for loving it. I think it just doesn't work on everyone's skin, but when it does it's heavenly.

PREFACE: Maison Margiela’s Replica line is a fine entry point for scents that capture moments rather than typical designer perfumes. Replica is more straightforward in what it conveys, and their fragrances resemble niche rather than mainstream. I bought the testing kit. It’s a great way to discover fragrance notes you didn’t know you liked. However, many of their scents lean feminine or unisex. I tried this one as a guessing game with my coworkers to give this a balanced review. -- UGH! I know I keep calling quite a few of REPLICA's as my "favorites" from this line, I am torn. This one has grown on me significantly. It was not love at first sight(sniff?). At first, it just smelled overwhelmingly of wine, like a drunk aunt sitting at home with her cats. Once applied to my skin however, it transforms into something entirely addictive. Still powdery, but that blackcurrant wine scent? I could not stop applying more when it wore off. I kept wanting to smell it on myself. With coworkers, it was divisive. Some found it off-putting, others didn't. Some went as far as to say it was a senior citizen scent, saying that the talcum/baby powder note was incredibly strong. Overall consensus is that it is powdery, floral, and slightly musty. Nobody picked up on the wine scent as much as I did though. While it may not be everyone’s glass of wine, it is unique and a hidden gem in my opinion. Carlos Benaïm's best.

If you're looking for a real review, read this... I actually WEAR the perfumes and go out while wearing them, whether I end up liking them or not. This perfume lives up to its name. It's exactly that, not a first date but a date you keep looking forward to in your relationship. Getting ready to go out because you're THAT COUPLE. A couple that truly loves each other, that has been together for so long and still have that spark between them. It's dancing all night, going to a pumpkin patch together, even shopping together because a real man loves to be around his girl. Sitting around a bonfire eating toasted marshmallows. It's singing FAST CAR, Luke Combs cover, out loud. Sipping on a hot white mocha latte, while being PASSENGER PRINCESS, remembering those times that brought you two to where you are right now. It's the HUG you share, with both of your scents combined creating what is, this masterpiece of a fragrance. On A Date is pure MAGIC. Smells like a hot cup of coffee, black, with sugar & fresh roses. That fade into a luxurious, creamy, big TEDDY BEAR hug, with heavy musk and a dash of cinnamon. If that makes sense. I love it so much. It smells amazing on him, but also incredibly delicious on me. Those who get it, get it. Longevity is superb! This is in my opinion a cozy cold weather perfume. BISOUS

On a date threads this really interesting needle of being rose and fruit forward but also unisex leaning, and I can't help but kind of respect it. It has a really nice, dark, jammy rose that blends seamlessly with the tangy, winey, black currant. The bergamot blends in by bridging the black currant and the rose while also standing out by adding zestiness to the top notes. And, the patchouli really contrasts the sweeter top notes and pushes the composition into a more unisex direction, rounding out the fragrance nicely. I get the other notes much less than these ones, especially the pink pepper, but I can kind of tell the musk is in the background adding some warmth, depth, and a pinch of sensuality. While I do stand by calling this fragrance unisex, I don't think this is for someone wanting to project hypermasculinity. On a Date is a great if you smelled Lush's Rose Jam and wished it had a little more depth and complexity. Though, On a Date doesn't have quite as much longevity or projection, but it still lasts a handful of hours on clothes and skin while creating a nice little scent bubble. Not Bad!! Not bad at all!

Genuinely imagine this: You're sitting in in Italy, in a restaurant in the Tuscan mountains, there are grapevines stretching down the mountains bearing so many grapes that you cant even count them all. Your favorite person is sitting in front of you, you both are drinking wine, taking in the beautiful Italian scenery. On a Date, contrasts that moment, since Maison Margiela catches such different moments perfectly in its bottles. You get that smell of grapes, close as wine, yet it contrasts beautifully in its fruit. I cant say more than it has been said, I tested this and wow. For others it could be to "feminine" but that opinion differs. Is it perfect for the Summer? More for the summer evenings, its the perfect Date night scent for Spring / Summer times (Oh wow of course it is, when its labeled as "on a date"). BUT I would rather purchase, "Never ending Summer" instead of this. This scent can only contrast this moment, making it not as versatile then others. It is not Blind Buy safe, regarding its price and the "feminine" flair, yet the "vibe" it gives off is unique and interesting. imo: 7/10

This is one of my signatures, but I definitely understand the negative reviews on this one, as it seems to be SO reliant on your skin. Blackcurrant in particular seems to be one of those polarizing notes bc it turns into cat pee on half the population, the way sandalwood turns into dill pickle on some people... and this is a very blackcurrant heavy scent. However this one meshes PERFECTLY with my skin. The peppery opening with hints of rose is so yummy! It’s perfectly blended- flirty without being immature or smelling like an armpit, mature without being grandma-ish or frumpy, classy without going too masculine. I have a weakness for girly scents that have a masculine edge, and this is the epitome of that- sparkly blackcurrant and rose balanced by patchouli and woodiness. If On a Date has no defenders assume I’m dead. If these notes seem nice to you, wander into a Sephora, spritz it on your skin, and you’ll either get Eau De Studio Apartment With 3 Cats or a real treat of a fragrance.

i really enjoy this one. starts out with a red wine pepper scent that almost leans a bit harsh. then it tones down slightly and blends with the rose to reach something lush and romantic. the wine impression remains most prominent, though—everyone who i poll on this scent when i'm wearing it doesn't pick up the roses, but does pick up the wine and berry. it's almost frightfully linear—a week later i'll smell the collar of my jacket and it'll smell the same as it would if i had sprayed it an hour ago. but the patchouli underneath keeps it from being too boring fruity, and it's not so boozy or strong that you'd feel weird wearing it in the daytime. i've had it for a couple years now, and have noticed that it occasionally reads metallic in the wintertime. i have a conspiracy theory that it's got some really particular interactions with my cycle as well, but haven't been able to pinpoint it. once the weather gets warmer i'll probably try to revisit that, lol.

Didn't like it at first because of the boozy opening note and jammy beginning but like a hard drink, by the 3rd or 4th deep inhale, you'll find yourself suddenly transported into a scene where you're literally meeting up with a potential suiter and eating dinner, talking, drinking and laughing together by the end of the date. Frickin' good job Replica! So far they've managed to beautifully capture moments in time as a scent with many of their perfumes. I am so impressed. Try to find this for cheaper on Joma or FragX or FragShop, because full price is just too much and there are so many fakes on the market. 10/10 Would buy again! ❤️👍

On A Date is the only perfume I have ever bought a three ounce bottle of. To me, it smells like jammy dried roses, a bar of soap and a glass of expensive red wine. I have worn it at concerts and ended up in mosh pits, worn it on dates, while I am out and about, not really at work but when I know I am going to go out somewhere. It makes me feel powerful and put together like a diva baddie. Definitely try it on your skin before you buy it though because this kind of mature rose is not everyone's cup of tea. But I truly enjoy wearing it and will always cherish my big bottle <3

Very feminine and romantic, the wine is effervescent and sweet, the roses fresh and intense, and dessert has just arrived at the table! Longevity on my skin is so-so but excellent on fabric, a much slower progression through the notes - I had that initial fresh bright fruit smell for well over an hour on fabric compared to minutes on skin. The musk showed up quietly at first but 12 hours in became dominant with the remnants of the rose, quite sweet. I didn't notice the patchouli so it's a light touch, usually that turns things masculine to my nose.

I'm not a huge fan of feminine fragrances but this just fascinates me. It doesn't smell too synthetic for my picky nose IMO, and despite it being heavily floral it has that fruity, jammy currant in there that's almost berry-like. It is a bit strong, but you really don't need a lot. This is a lot more complex than the typical perfume that leaves me with a headache and some burnt nosehairs. While it is typically feminine I think it's rather unisex.

Kind of the best I can imagine a fruity floral smelling. Super rounded, tropical, and juicy. The fruity note reminds me of mango personally, but I'm not super familiar with black currant. I was really surprised to see negative reviews for this one honestly, but it could just be my skin chemistry. It's pretty and rosy, but still sooooo sexy. Tbh one of my favorites out of Maison Margiela.

amazing and versatile, my fav margiela fragrance easily. beautiful mix of florals and green / fruity notes, great for warm weather. very patchouli heavy on initial spray, but dries down into a very clean, rose + grape scent; unisex but leans somewhat masculine. be aware though, the blackcurrent note is extremely prominent, and can smell weird depending on ur body chemistry., be aware

to me, this was the standout from the discovery kit. SUCH a beautiful fragrance! to me, it feels like a great blend of masculine & feminine scents. the sweetness of the blackcurrant/rose is boosted by the patchouli/moss, leaving this subtle earthy floral that i can sense on the tip of my tongue with every breath. this really solidified my love of patchouli-rose as a combo.

very romantic, soft, and feminine. not overly strong or seductive, more of a soft aura. Very office friendly, even got me compliments. Smells like a drop of wine on lips that have been freshly painted with lipstick, in a low and slow jazz bar. the mix of rose, patchouli, and grape create such a sensual experience- i love this fragrance. one of my favorites of all time

This fragrance is beautiful. At first, I thought it would lean pretty feminine based on the scent profile—but man, was I wrong. It’s a lovely fragrance, and nothing in my collection quite compares to its unique character. It’s smooth, clean, and gives off a gentle vibe. Not too loud, but not too subtle either—just the perfect middle ground. Definitely a solid pickup!

Of all the Margiela fragrances, this is my favorite. At first it has a feminine scent like grapes and wine, which gradually changes to a rose scent. After drying down, the scent becomes more masculine with notes of patchouli, vetiver, and oakmoss. A fragrance with two sides. An enchantingly beautiful scent. I love it so much that I bought three bottles.

so pretty! A sweet floral opening cut with the slight tart of citrus and currant with an almost smoky, earthy undertone. It would be my favorite / signature if only it lasted longer. Opening sillage is impressive and beautiful, but it almost entirely fades on me after 30 minutes or even less. Side note, reminds me of the Chloe l'eau de parfum intense.

I think this is gorgeous especially in the dry down. I get rose in the begining and i get the grape slightly which i thought was black currant. I think the patchouli and musk make this a more grown up scent. If you want something brighter and a bit more youthful try Up At Dawn. You can get a great deal on this if you buy through the grey market.

One of my favorite fragrances! All of the notes work together perfectly; it would be perfect for a spring/summer outing. It’s very feminine. Every time I smell this I think of a picnic in Italy. The scent is relatively linear throughout the day, but I do wish the longevity was better. Overall I would say it’s a 9/10 for me.

This remind me of blackcurrant candy. In love. First two hours on my skin it is pure blackcurrant candy scent reminding my childhood eating this particular candies in classroom with friends. Two hours later, it develops into a beautiful blackcurrant patchouli base. the rose pops up here and there but not strong enough.

I am writing this as a man. I'm reading the comments and I'm very surprised about the bad rewievs. For me this is the scent that I would love to smell on a girl on a date. Very nice and I would probably think about the smell of the girl for quite some time after the date. A perfect female date or everyday scent imo.

I really loved it, I think the name fits perfectly with the impression I got from the fragrance. For me, I get sweet grapes with rose, really a love for me. I think for a date or for an autumn day with a trench and leaves falling going to a restaurant it really fits this vibes for me, really good 😊

I was surprised this fragrance gets so much hate on this site, I love it and it's one of my favorites from MM. It leans female but I still love wearing this as a guy. Its really the perfect fall scent but I'd wear this anytime with no issues.

Smells like a rose bouquet, half-burnt vanilla candles, and the traces of a partner's cologne. Kind of reminded me of Lush's Snow Fairy at first spray, but settles into some spicy & herbal notes which give it a more serious vibe.

I smelled a blast of roses, then a hint of grapes followed by a winey smell. It is not soft and light. The perfume totally has a character to it, not boring at all. But i can see that it is not everybody’s cup of tea!

This is amazing. It’s a nice light rose, that isn’t too sweet. Although some may argue it leans feminine, I’d argue the musk and patchouli make it unisex. I love the wine-like opening. The performance is solid.

Very underrated and overlooked. It is sweet, adorable, flirty, quirky, warm and cute. Syrupy, sugary, fruity in an unconventional way. Long lasting and projects well for an edt. My favorite fragrance.

A fruity skin scent that leans quite feminine but isn't overly sweet or floral. I don't get patchouli at all. It has a bit of a boozy quality, makes me think of watching the sunset on a vineyard.

Don’t undrestand the reviews. This is my third fav fragnance from Margiela and I Iove it. It smells like sweet grapes and it has some kind of vine vibe to it. Recommend. (teenager male)

I personally really like this perfume, it lasts well and I can smell rose and grape. It doesn't smell like wine to me either. Just a nice evening (date night) appropriate perfume.

totally weird and purple. i didn't care about it at first but wow. i don't think the comparisons to fruity candy are accurate. it's more dusty and sour than that.

i really don't know how i feel about this one. before my fragrance hype developed, i found it in the store and really liked it, a sweet sparkling fruity rose done in a romantic, not dated and not overly floral way, with a woody base to make it more balanced and unisex. so after a while i asked my boyfriend to get it for me as a gift. while i love the patchouli rose dna mixed with some syrop like fruits, the longer u wear it the more it fades away leaning into a weird, acidic and sour smell. most of the time its bearable, but when its not its really frustrating. im still a fan of this fragrance, but i lowkey get the cat piss association some people have lol. the closest other fragrance to this one's amazing opening is gucci guilty absolute pour femme, but dyptique eau capitole is second in the line. however i wouldnt compare it to lalique amethyst like other people did, lalique for me smells like cheap berry toilet spray. if u're interested in getting this, dont blind buy it, smell it on ur skin and check if u like it enough to sacrifice its aftertaste. i'll cherish my bottle untill its finished, thank my man again for the gift, and replace it with the gucci.

Oh, this one changes a lot, like a good date I'd say. To me they really nailed it with their description of a moment. It begins with syrupy blackcurrant (grape candy vibe, as is written in the perfume description) and rose, lots of rose. Like the beginning of a date, nice and a litte flirty. Can't say I'm a fan of the opening as im not really a sweet fruity person. BUT! Half an hour in it slowly starts changing, the aromatic and woody notes start peeking through and add the feeling of a good aged wine. So if its a date this is when the conversation gets deeper and you know there is a spark there. At this point I start really liking it. The magic though happens in the total dry down, the fruitiness disappears and you are left with a woody, spicy aromatic perfume, with just a hint of rose. Super sexy. And how you end your date is up to you :)

This is a pleasant fragrance, not a complete miss for me, but it definitely leans nostalgic. It immediately took me back to the 90's, evoking memories of the perfumes my aunts and mom used to wear when I was little. I can’t quite pinpoint the exact scent it resembles, but it has strong "Café" vibes that affordable, pharmacy-favorite from back in the day. There's also a whisper of vintage Avon, and maybe even a touch of early 90s Paloma Picasso frangance. It’s undeniably a scent that feels like it belongs to a different era. The patchouli is quite noticeable, though not overwhelming. Performance-wise, it left me wanting more both longevity and projection are underwhelming. I wouldn’t recommend it for younger audiences or hot weather wear. That said, it’s not a total writeoff, there’s still something charming about it. 6.5/10

the first time i smelt this was in the galeries lafayette in paris it made me think of a molten syrupy ice pop and made me nostalgic bought it took it home and was slightly disappointed not because it smells bad it was just different the opening smells like expired, borderline rotten grapes. one day i like it the other day i dont but sometimes when the musk also kicks in (and something sour in the background cant pinpoint it) it does in fact get a body odour vibe the dry down is super floral and pretty nice i do think this is pretty tricky to wear as a guy, i have gotten compliments from women but i dont know if they liked it on me or if they wanted it for themselves, lol i like it but wouldnt buy this again if you are a performative guy in touch with your feminine side i guess it might be for you
