Whispers in the Library

Category: Woody, smooth, sensual Notes: Sprays on incredibly alcoholic and does come off a little plasticky for the first few minutes, but soon vanilla and cedar come out to play, and it begins smelling very much like perfumed paper or maybe just the way a coniferous forest smells in springtime. There are some other non-descript woody notes in there that enter the ring after it has fully dried down that add a milky, smooth and sensual tone to the overall scent, but I couldn’t pick out which if I tried. Vibe: Lovers between the sheets. The color white, or maybe beige. Suede. Books. Scented candles. Coniferous forest. Burnt match. Blown out candles. White wine. Knitted sweaters. Sacrificial lamb. Hidden agendas. Restrained desires. Riddles. Wooden chesspieces. Dusk. Perfumed letters. Stolen glances. Sillage: 7/10. In my opinion just perfect. It’s not loud or obnoxious, but it’s totally present. This would waft over passing by someone or when leaning into a hug. Longevity: 4/10. 3 hours after spraying this on and it's nearly gone. That's so disappointing considering how lovely this scent is otherwise. I will however say it does hold up much better on clothes! Wear: Day or night. This is quite unassuming and mild, yet unique and intriguing at the same time. I’m betting this would work all year round, but I’m thinking it’s probably better suited for the cooler months out of the year all the way into early springtime. Overall rating: 8.5/10. I managed to snag a nearly full 100ml bottle of this baby at an auction and dear God, just smelling this out the bottle I was hooked! I have this scented candle at home with oud and jasmine that smells so damn good that I, for years now, have been looking for a perfume that replicates the scent. This is perhaps the closest I’ve gotten, and yet this doesn’t have jasmine in it and I wouldn’t say it’s giving oud either. But it’s that same silky, soft and sensual combination that the candle has. While I don’t completely rule out that this could work on a man, I will say you’d have to have a special kind of aura to wear this as a guy. It IS totally unisex and I wouldn’t even really say it leans feminine necessarily, but it just feels like a woman’s scent somehow. It’s clean without smelling like detergent or fabric softener and it’s really light and rich, all at the same time. Smooth, round, gorgeous. Would I say this smells like a library? No. Does it smell like a book? Maybe, like the “vibe” a book has, but I wouldn’t say it smells like a real book. If I was involved in naming this it'd be called "Letter For a Lover" because it smells like paper sprayed with perfume. So, it doesn't smell like a book or a library, but isn't it lovely nonetheless? Oh, absolutely! The only thing that brings my rating down from a solid 10 is it's less than stellar longevity which leaves much to be desired. Who would wear it?: As surprised as I am to say this, I think this is the Catherine Tramell scent I’ve been looking for all this time. That being said, while I think this is absolutely something Catherine Tramell would have in her repertoire of fragrances, it’s what she’d sport when she wants to blend in. This is not her real, authentic self - this is what she’d put on as camouflage to distract from it.

The moment it touches my skin, I’m back at uni, descending into the lower‐lower basement of the library, that hidden world beneath the real one. Even now, I can picture the staircase: narrow, humming with old fluorescent lights, the air cooling with every step. It always felt like crossing a threshold, leaving the noise of campus behind and entering a place where time moved differently. Down there, the silence had weight. Down there, the dust had history. Down there, I felt like I belonged to something older than myself. I used to go searching for the archived architectural books and drawings from the 1880s, those oversized folios wrapped in waxy faded cloth, the pages so fragile they felt like they might sigh into dust if you breathed too hard. I remember the way the metal drawers groaned when you pulled them open, the way the paper smelled when you unrolled a century‐old plan: dry, warm, a little sweet, like the ghost of a workshop long gone. Whispers in the Library opens with that exact scent: the soft sweetness of old paper, the warmth of polished wood, the quiet hum of vanilla that feels like the glow of a desk lamp in a room with no windows. It smells like the moment you sit down alone at a table, place your notebook beside you and realise you’re the only person in the world who knows you’re there. As it settles, the perfume becomes the memory of those afternoons when I’d lose track of time completely. The peppery dryness mirrors the texture of those brittle pages, the ones that felt almost translucent when held up to the light. And the gentle sweetness that lingers is the same feeling I had when I found something unexpected in the archives: a handwritten note, a forgotten sketch, a name that meant nothing and yet somehow everything. There was a quiet ache to those days but it was the kind of ache that comes from growing, from learning, from being young in a place that feels impossibly big. I didn’t realise then how much I’d miss it - the solitude, the stillness, the sense of being suspended between who I was and who I was becoming. By the time Whispers in the Library dries down, it becomes a warm, woody whisper on the skin; the scent of closing the archive box, turning off the desk lamp and climbing the stairs back toward the world above. I can almost feel the shift: the air warming, the lights brightening, the noise returning. And every time, I remember that tiny pang in my chest - the one that said, stay a little longer. For me, this fragrance isn’t just a replica of a library. It’s a replica of a chapter of my life I still carry with me: the quiet, formative, beautifully lonely days in the Sheffield archives, where I learned to love silence, paper and the stories hidden in the dust. And wearing it now feels like visiting an old version of myself, one I’m grateful for, one I miss and one I’m glad still lingers in the scent of a small 10ml bottle. And every time I wear it, I get to go back for a moment. Just long enough to remember who I was then and how far I’ve walked since.

This ended up being my favourite Replica fragrance by quite a long way. From the first spray it smells warm, slightly sweet and gently musty, but in a way that feels comforting rather than unpleasant. It instantly reminded me of stepping into an old church or a historic building that's been standing for hundreds of years, or that slightly too dark corner of the old wing of a university library that nobody ever seems to venture into. There's old wood, yellowed crumpled paper and sweet smokiness all wrapped together. I'm genuinely gutted this has been discontinued!! As it develops, there's a soft leather note and a gentle smokiness that evolves, but unlike other leather fragrances I've tried, it never becomes harsh or headache-inducing. Everything feels blended together really well, creating that library atmosphere naturally rather than shouting individual notes (looking at you, Commodity Book+). I love that it actually delivers on its concept and, from the very first spray my brain just gets blasted by the bigger-picture story it's trying to tell. I do think the Replica range is usually pretty solid at this, but this fragrance in particular does it really well. Ironically though, I'm still not convinced I actually want to smell like an old library all day. As much as I enjoy wearing it, it almost works better as an experience than as my signature scent. I've just bought a 10 ml travel spray to use sparingly on long writing days, lightly spraying it around my home office before settling down to write my archaeology thesis. To me, this scent is less about wearing it and more about creating the atmosphere it captures. If there was ever a fragrance made to recreate that quiet, dark academia atmosphere of an old university library at home, this is it. RIP Whispers in the Library!!

One of my all time favorites, hands down! Starts off a bit sweet and peppery, then develops into a deeper papery/waxy/woody scent that is just so intoxicating. The fact this was discontinued is a crime. I found a 10ml on Mercari and I am so happy to finally enjoy this fragrance again, just in time for the colder months. This is the gold standard for dark academia/book scents and no dupe comes close. Not even the ALT Novel dupe. That smells like a candle more than a fragrance meant for wearing. Novel also doesn't have the gorgeous woody/waxy dry down which is what this fragrance is all about. I highly, highly, highly recommend buying a bottle or decant of Whispers if you can find it! Something I've noticed about this fragrance is that it has a very different dry down depending on how it's worn. If you go outside for a few minutes after spraying, the wind takes away the sweet notes and when you come back inside, the dry down is photorealistic books and paper. If you spray it and stay inside, it holds onto a sweeter waxy scent. Both are amazing but I prefer the paper dry down more. Seriously, try this. PSA: All of the 7ml minis on eBay and Mercari are FAKE, along with the $30 bottles on eBay, and the 10ml bottles that misspell "Whispera" on the label. I made the mistake of buying all of these from different sellers, and they don't smell even remotely authentic or similar. If buying a decant, make sure it comes from an authentic bottle. The seller I bought from pictured the bottle next to the decant.

All of the reviews on this fragrance are actually quite cohesive, and my opinion of this understated fragrance does not dally from the pack. This scent is not 'Nose up the crack of a book in the library.' It does not smell like leather or old tomes. It's not parchment-y or very waxy but far more woody in my opinion. I’d be surprised if anyone complimented you on wearing this by saying, “Damn, you smell like a delicious library!” as you walk by... But, to me, it smells like that frustratingly attractive and elusive individual who sits there, emphatically engrossed in book after book, and pays no mind to how many times you ‘accidentally’ drop your pencil because they are completely absorbed in what they are reading. And that’s hot. Whispers in the Library is a surprisingly intimate scent. My partner and I both wear it. He more than me (because I not-so-subtly like attention) and he says it reminds him of Dolce&Gabbana The One for men. I somewhat agree but I think Whispers is not at all as sweet and of course, being Replica, smells more ‘natural’. It is definitely a skin scent, but if the cuddle lingers and evolves into more the scent becomes quite intoxicating in its simple and refined way. Today I wore it over fragrance-less lotion and it lasted more than four hours on my skin (six and counting) and has a little bit more projection, but not much. Perfect for an introverted romantic (sexy reading glasses not included) My ranking: 7/10 (I care about compliments) Partner's ranking: 8/10 (he doesn’t)

A second-hand bookstore! Whispers in the Library (WTL) was my first, and favourite MM Replica fragrance. Finding out that they discontinued WTL was like feeling my first heartbreak again! WTL opens up with a sharp pepper note that quickly settles into a laid back woody aroma. As the fragrance dries down, a slight vanillic note mixes in with the woody notes, creating a creamier fragrance. There is a minty quality to this perfume as well, and cools down my nostrils a bit. The fragrance itself is quite linear and doesn’t really transform throughout the day, which doesn’t bother me too much! WTL smells like the used bookstore that I frequently visit. This bookstore often had a diffuser running in the background, often diffusing vanilla and peppermint essential oil. An elderly man sit behind the counter with his hands wrapped around a yellowed book. I dust the snow off my shoes and head to the philosophy section of the store. Old, deteriorating books from Camus, Sartre, and Nietzsche fill the shelves. The essential oils diffusing in the background mixed with the vanillic quality of the old books laying on the cedarwood shelves create an amazing aroma... an aroma that reminds me of Whispers in the Library. 10/10

The opening is reminiscent of Carmex, and has a waxy quality. This dries down fairly quickly into a woody vanilla with only a hint of that waxy note. It is a soft, inoffensive, mass appealing but light vanilla. While I love the name of this fragrance it doesn’t smell anything like a book or library. I thankfully don’t get any of the dusty mustiness that some vanillas like this have (like Byredo’s Vanille Antique) that does read used or antique, and I don’t get any paperyness (Like Commodity’s Paper). The wax at the beginning is the closest to these qualities that would remind me of an old library or bookstore. That being said, it smells like Carmex to me, not book wax. Also, as someone who loves spicy woody heavy vanillas, the lightness of this fragrance makes it fairly wearable year round. I wouldn’t say it’s a spring or summer fragrance at its core, but I think you could pull it off in warmer weather. I find this to be quite wearable, but not what you’d reach for if you really wanted to pack a punch.

I've been sampling some new fragrances these past weeks, and I can definitely say that this one has been one of my favorites. I did not expect to like it as much, maybe because of the unisex tag and the more woodsy & pepper notes, I usually go for more feminine & sweet fragrances. but this is REALLY good! 🥰 the opening is quite strong, for some reason, it reminds me of a forest, shortly after it stopped raining... I'm guessing it's the cedar with a little bit of pepper in the background? however, this doesn't really last super long and quickly settles into such a beautiful woody-vanilla scent. it has such a pleasant sweetness to it, but not overwhelming, it is nicely balanced by the woody notes. I am not sure yet if this reminds me of a library, although I can imagine wearing this while being in one, there is this feel of old books and manuscripts to it. all in all, a very pleasant, comforting, elegant scent. most fitting for fall and winter. I would definitely consider purchasing a bottle of this. :)

I was picturing something mustier—those used bookstores that used to line Charing Cross Road—but this is actually quite fresh and clean on me. I’m getting the waxed wood so clearly, which gives it a municipal, idiosyncratic library feel. You are not reading old books at home, you are very specifically in a library. It’s so interesting! So I get the scent memory, but it’s still very wearable and a nice floor-wax-clean addition to my musky/vanilla/woody collection. It’s also nice to get that understated spice, rather than an absolute bomb. For everyone looking for that perfect “academia” scent, I would say that this may not be as cosy or indeed dark as you’re expecting: my beloved L’Air de Rien is more like reading in bed (half naked, with a lover), Diptyque L’Eau Papier gives me more Charing Cross Road bookshop, and maybe DS&Durga Bowmakers if you want way more wood in your waxed wood. And it does whisper rather than shout! That said, I love it. I do wish it had a little lid for travel though.

Dark , waxed + polished cedarwood with a vanillic base that is reminiscent of the scent of yellowed paper from books (which yellows due to oxidation which releases lignin , a compound related to vanilin). Its not sweet though, its a dusty vanilla. There is also a clean, antique style patchouli here which kind of reminds me of the patchouli used in M7 although its much less strong and much cleaner. But its in that kind of zone. I think its gorgeous and unique, but the truth is its not for everyone, some people I showed it too think its way too vanillic or dusty or just that it kind of smells like old wood. Which is all true and the reason why people that love this fragrance really love it. I also have demeter paperback which is very similar in concept but whispers is a lot more woodsy and captures that old paper scent in a more realistic way. Paperback is not really a substitute for whispers in the library but it could be an add on.

It’s still elegant, still comforting, but now it’s got that subtle gravitas. The kind of scent that doesn’t scream “I’m here,” but people notice, and they linger in curiosity. Perfect for layering if you want to add warmth to something sharper, or just let it stand alone and feel effortlessly refined. Longevity and projection? Solid, just enough to make an impression without overpowering. For me, this one is nostalgia wrapped in sophistication — a memory of my favorite scent that’s grown up with me. I would give anything to own another bottle of it to smell the sweet woody scent it once was.

One of my favorite perfumes ever. The cedar is so comforting, and reminds me of the smell of the cedar houses (specifically Lindal cedar homes) and the scratch and sniff cedar paper they would include in their books. Probably a niche memory, but it reminds me of sitting in my dads study as a kid, sniffing the paper slips while he worked at his desk. The vanilla is such a nice addition and my partner loves the smell of it at the end of the day as it works well with my natural smell. Gets me a lot of compliments when I'm out! Overall, if the wood vanilla vibe seems like your thing, get it (if u can find a bottle since its discontinued). I've finished almost 2 bottles now and was able to find someone selling a used bottle thank goodness, but it's really a shame that I haven't found any frags that are super similar. If you DONT like wood or vanilla, use your brain and skip this one.

A very interesting and a melancholic perfume. Perfect for a city person who prefers evenings. I've used this for over a year now, and this indeed shines during late fall/winter. It feels a little bit like like a dark, rainy night out with close friends; It's cozy, interesting, deep and sexy. It's sophisticated and unique, a quite introverted vibe to it (hence the name lol), and also can be pretty urban, gritty and cool. The longevity is not really great on skin, but stays on clothes for a relatively long time. Sometimes the vanilla can feel a little bit musty and dark after a long day out. Almost a similar sensation as having sticky and sugary lips. I think it adds to the grittiness of the city life, so i don't mind it. (that analogy made it sound way worse than it actually is) In my opinion this one is easily one of the best and most interesting MM scents.

Whispers in the Library is one of the best offerings from the Replica line. This perfume is a beautiful combination of cozy vanilla and warm woody notes with a peppery touch in the opening that's keeping the scent from being your typical vanilla/ wood blend. The woods are prominent and the vanilla doesn't carry that edible/gourmand facet. There is slight powdery/dusty quality from the tonka bean, which brings the scent picture closer to reality. Whispers in the Library is a quite linear fragrance with satisfying performance. Best suitable for colder weather. I would say this is fairly safe blind buy, especially if you're looking for a not gourmand vanilla and your skin doesn't magnify the peppery notes. Also heard that it's getting discontinued, so better check it out before completely disappearing.

I know this is a strange thing to say, but something in the cedar and vanilla dry down, is very similar to Black Opium Le Parfum. Obviously far less sweet, but I think the cedar and vanilla turn sweet when I'm wearing it. I love this to pieces - no it isn't reminiscent of library books, but it's conveying the feel of being in a wall-to-wall English library with lots of dusty wooden ladders and shelves. Extremely classy and delicious. Gives off very cool girl vibes, and yes dark academia too. This doesn't smell at all like Byredo's Vanille Antique - it gives off a similar vibe, but Vanille Antique is a very strong, ambery vanilla, with a dark, tart, plum note, whereas this is much dustier/waxy/creamy from the cedarwood, and with zero amber.

When I first smelled this I knew I wanted it to become one of my signature scents (how could I not--I love books and I work in a library). It definitely leans more vanilla than woody on my skin, but there's something in it (maybe the pepper?) that cuts through the vanilla adding complexity and keeping it from becoming cloying. This is 100% a fall/winter perfume for me--I spray it on all my sweaters. My only complaint is that I wish it lasted longer on me! Truly heartbroken that it seems to be discontinued, but thank god I have over half a bottle still left (and may try to purchase another full size to keep on hand just in case). I've tried so many other woody vanilla scents to try to find a dupe but nothing compares!

The only Maison Margiela I ended up liking. Jazz Club was foul. By The Fireplace was misleadingly sweet. This was uniquely itself, nothing misleading. It’s a vanilla antique library. It was the most evocative and drew on memories better than any of the others in the line, for me subjectively. It reminded me when I was young and surrounded by the mysteries of old. Vintage adventures and Vintage libraries, 120 year old heritage homes and the thrill of knowledge. Admittedly, a simpler scent profile, but one universally likeable, and had no boundaries or limitations. Speaking volumes larger than itself, larger than a designer should have. Fuck you Maison Margiela, you discontinued your only top tier fragrance.

Soft, warm, and well-blended. This definitely evokes library/bookshops - the woody smell is very dusty (in a bookish way) doesn’t smell super like a book as it lacks a kind of “papery” smell and is a little too sweet (it’s not very sweet on the whole, but books are a very not sweet smell in my mind - I think this gives more bookshop that also sells candles and the like). This is a great scent for people who tend to get headaches with “loud” perfumes because it’s so beautifully blended and there aren’t really any screechy or loud notes, just pure atmosphere. Wish it lasted longer on my skin - it does last all day but in the evening I can only smell it when I stick my nose right up to where I sprayed it.

RIP to a real one. Whispers in the Library is an all time favourite and I'm afraid to use up the rest of my bottle because once it's gone, it'll be gone for good. Spicy, peppery wood that smells like a dusty old library. Not a book, but a library. I've worked with rare books before and it does sort of smell like where they're kept, with a dry, musty feel to it. After a while it dries down to a nice, cozy vanilla, that smells more old book-like. Unfortunately, as my bottle ages, its lasting power decreases. It used to last all day on me, but now I'm lucky if I only get a few hours. The strength has decreased as well. Replica, PLEASE bring this back!!!

While people would be correct in saying that is does not smell like books or a photo-realistic library Whispers does however invoke the feeling of being in a vintage library reading a book that has been sitting on the shelf for 10 years, more so a paper back. I have yet to smell a fragrance that smells anything like Whispers and the people saying Encre Noire Extreme smells similar would be out of their minds. I will never forgive MMM for discontinuing this amazing scent, it seems that that is what they have been doing recently but I was lucky to get a back up bottle. Very waxy-vanilla with a woody undertone makes this standout as really unique

Cozy, easy to wear in daily occasion, and I personally love the balance between the sweet vanilla notes and the woods. Too bad it lasts nothing on me! I can spray it as much as I want but the sillage stays very weak and the longevity is only 3-4 hours tops. It's a shame 'cause otherwise it's simple but very very nice for me. I have a bottle and I use it as a skin scent for daily casual occasions but I don't think I'll feel the need to repurchase it (all for the better since apparently it's been discontinued). I will definitely look out for something similar but more intense as I really like the scent.

I received a sample of Whispers when I purchased a bottle of By the Fireplace. At the time, I liked it, but wasn't sure it was for me. A few weeks ago, I decided to get the Whispers candle, and fell in love with it. Now that the fragrance has sadly been discontinued by MMM, I had to search for one, finding it on eBay. The candle and fragrance are very similar, but not the same. I love the candle but if it were identical to the bottled fragrance I wouldn't like it as much for a home fragrance. The bottled fragrance gives me a similarity to TF Oud Wood, a bit lighter overall but more peppery.

smells like by the fireplace after you've had it on for a few hours and the literal fire smoke smell has worn down. all time top fav from margiela--this is my go-to perfume from september to march. feels a little too heavy for the spring and summer usually, but it's just the right amount of warm and cozy for the cold winter and fall. endlessly sniffing myself when i wear this--i often swish a scarf through where i've spritzed it so that a little catches on the fabric to last for several wears. the vanilla also does a lot of heavy lifting here which is just as i like it :)

During one visit to a Maison Margiela pop-up store, I was brokenhearted to learn that the maison discontinued this fragrance. Whispers in the Library does not smell like a library per se, but it is a cozy, inoffensive fragrance to wear to the library. It's peppery and subtly floral in the opening, but these bright accords dissipate quite fast, giving way to a creamy woody accord that envelops the skin. I found myself sniffing my skin repeatedly to enjoy the creamy trail that the fragrance left. Sadly, performance is not its forté.

Vanilla ( not in a sweet way) mixed with cedar, dry wood and a pinch of Black pepper. So simple so addictive. Very subtle and very classy and inoffensive in its own way. I fell in love at first spray and sniff. The opening is powdery almost dusty vanilla, followed by dry woodsy notes, If you get close to it you can detect the peppery hints. Lovely... you can almost hear the quiet in this scent, A masterpiece in my opinion. Longevity is amazing and the silage is moderate. Perfection in a bottle.

The breaking down of paper over time has the same vanillic molecule as vanilla, hence vanilla is always used in ‘library or book or paper’ scents. I work in a large and old library and have tried several ‘library’ scents but this is the one that has pleased me the most. It is present but not overpowering. The wood and vanilla beautifully balanced. Elegant and good quality. It’s subtlety is the tipping point, perfect for me to wear at work, in the library. Have sampled and will purchase.

This is one of my all-time favorite fragrances. I still can’t come to terms with the fact that it’s been discontinued. In my opinion, together with Jazz Club, it’s the best scent from Replica line. As a book lover, I feel like this fragrance transports me into a world of calm, comfort, and pure relaxation. It’s elegant and simple, yet deeply intriguing. I love it with all my heart and I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that, somehow, it will make a return to the shelves one day.

Just got a sample of this and i kid you not i smelt it through the bubble wrap. I was excited and opened it up gave myself a spray on the wrist and the sillage is pretty nice i feel like if i was to walk up to someone they would pass me and be like damn he smells like an expensive amber vanilla. Since this is a sample I mixed it up with bath and body works freshwater and damn I feel like a genius. Can’t wait to get the full bottle and turn this into a frequent frag i use.

You poured juniper and blueberries onto your table cloth and smushed them in there. You're smelling them from an arm's length away. Dry down transports you into an attic of an old building. It's large, has a window, books. You look out a wooden window at the dust floating in the sun. You realize it's the slightly sweet fruity smelling eyeshadow pallet you brought with you for some reason. Maybe you're a book worm who wants to look good.

Just tried a sample of this and I’m obsessed! Don’t be fooled but the eBay $30-40 ones they must be fake bc this is discontinued and going for over $200 on the grey market How sad. I’m wondering how similar this is the Byredo biblioteque I have maison alhambras Berlinetta which is a dupe of the above mentioned but maybe it needs to sit bc it’s mostly fruity and missing that dark academia leather note I’m getting from my sample of this

Really love it - I'm surprised to see there's no Orris or Violet listed in the notes, as it's quite powdery. It smells extra delicious when paired with Kayali Vanilla 28 to sweeten it up a bit, but it's extremely chic just by itself.Reminds me a bit of Dior Homme Intense which has an Iris overdose, so if you found that too powdery this is a good one instead. Can easily see this becoming a daily reach now in the Winter.

I finished my bottle but TBH I will not miss it, even though it is discontinued. I loved it, the first time I sniffed it, it was amazing- real feel of book store. Then I got totally bored, it is not exciting after some time. Is it romantic - absolutely, is it inoffensive- yeah, do you receive complements- no. After the first month you get bored. I still love it but should I pay the ridiculous price right now - never!

smells incredible to me, very cozy and warm. it certainly lives up to the name. initially I get a warm vanilla scent, with a spicy edge. on the dry down, definitely get more of the dry papery woodsy smell feels like: a warm hug, being bundled in a cozy wool sweater by the fireplace with a nice mug of steaming tea, sitting peacefully in the library by candlelight. amazing for fall and great as a bedtime fragrance

this is such a cosy scent. it opens with some cedar notes that potentially emulate a library/books, but it's only for 15 minutes. after that, it's an inviting warm woody vanilla fragrance. It's sweet but definitely not gourmand/cloying. it rather smells like the kind of sweet that could be naturally your skin-scent. its also surprisingly long-lasting for an EDT, but will not last longer than 4ish hours.

This perfume lasts for so long that I was able to identify twenty dollar bills that my wife (who wears it) had used a week prior when they were handed to me at my job, located 50 minutes away. Extremely worth the price, lovely scent that I never get tired of. My only criticism is that I actually wish it smelled a little nastier/more rotted/more dusty to really get the full old-book experience.

When i sprayed it on a blotter i could only smell the vanilla note. However when i first sprayed it on my skin the first thing that hit my nose was a hazelnut scent. Even though hazelnut isnt listed in the notes it reminded me of hazelnut spread. As it opened up that scent faded and i started to pick up all the other notes. It literally smells like books just like its name suggests

a soft vanilla fragrance with a little booziness. scent DNA is very unique amidst all of the monster in-your-face sweet/gourmand stuff that is popular today. longevity and sillage are on the moderate side but you can still catch whiffs of its airy, creamy sweetness even after 6 hours. i can definitely see how it has amassed a cult following and i'm quite happy with my bottle!

A TRUE unisex. A mature and woody vanilla scent without being too much. A very comforting and enveloping scent, especially during cooler temperatures. I always receive compliments when I wear it. I will never understand why Maison Margiela discontinued this perfume. I have 1/3 of my 30 ml bottle left and I dont want to wear it since I will not be able to buy it again.

Opens up with wood and wax sort of like a lipstick scent or kind of like the wax seal used on letters. It dries down to mostly vanilla that isn't too sweet. The only disappointing thing with this fragrance is the projection and longevity, it projects a little for the first hour then becomes a skin scent. Definitely wearable on summer nights as it is not too heavy.

How I miss this! One of my favorite perfumes to wear during autumn, I can totally picture myself in a library reading during the cold weather. Definitely a signature scent, I wouldn’t qualify this one as masculine but not feminine either, it’s perfectly unisex. I haven’t been able to find it anywhere for a couple of years and it seems to have been discontinued.

I used to be a Librarian (no we are NOT pornstars underneath) and I can swear that this smells exactly like the rare book room. If I had known the perfume was to be discontinued, I would've purchased several more bottle to stockpile for my perfume apocalypse. Why do beauty people make you love something and then take it away? Mr Margiela I'm looking at you.

This scent changes every time I smell it. Sometimes it is sweet, sometimes woody, sometimes dusty, but always good. I have never smelled it in the wild and now that it's discontinued this makes an excellent signature scent. I own several bottles and it's the one fragrance I always come back to. Works best in cold months but I wear it year round.

Very woody and spicy amber opening Dry down is more creamy as vanilla becomes more prominent, there is a also a hint of powdery notes that come off almost dusty - this makes for the perfect library atmosphere Beautiful spicy and creamy combination and is giving old library vibes (no book scent though)

Whispers in the Library is a beautiful cozy fragrance with surprisingly good longevity. This lasts 8+ hours on my skin, which is unusual since most Margiela fragrances last about half of that. The dry down makes this worth it - truly beautiful and it is such a shame it's discontinued. 9.5/10

Bought this for my bookish, academic boyfriend and was afraid he'd find it too feminine after stating he likes classical male scents - but it was and still is really appreciated and he gets so many compliments for it. I wear it too, sometimes, but prefer it as a soft but deep male fragrance.

love love LOVE THIS it brings back so many memories . wore this scent for like 3 years and i only have like 40 sprays left but oh my god why did they discontinue this it’s such a beautiful antiquey vanilla that reminds me of nyc at night, so perfect for autumn and just a 10/10 fragrance

Polished, posh, lacquered To me, It’s less about the paper in the library and more about the leather binding and the old varnished furniture. It does come off academic with a hint of shoe polish and rich brown leather. It is vanilla-heavy without being gourmand at all. I need a bottle!

Thankful i figured out the formula for this one now that I'm hearing it's discontinued. I've been wearing my version for the past year and loving it better than the little that's left of the original bottle. (I use more vanilla) Pepper...Vanilla...Woods...formula for success!

I bought this one as a present for myself when I graduated law school. To me it smells exactly how the law floor of my universities library smelt - old books, wooden shelves and a dusty vanilla scent in the air. Sexy librarian vibes. One of my favourite perfumes of all time.

I bought a sample of this for myself (female) but I’m actually obsessed with it on my boyfriend. It is such a sexy scent on a man. There is something about the woody vanilla that drives me wild; it suits a tall, mysterious, bookish man who wears tweed and sweaters.
