Mon Nom est Rouge

Mon nom et Rouge is one of my favorite rose fragrances of all time. Most rose fragrances are very petal focused and while some in that style are amazing to experience like Paul Smith's Rose, the majority of those petal heavy rose scents either smell like an air freshener or a scent worn by a pearl wearer. I say this all the time but it bears repeating...I don't want to smell like granny. Mon Nom is a deep sexy rose scent that's very dark, very rich and very smokey. If you thought Oud Satin Mood by MFK or Portrait of a Lady were dark rose scents you haven't smelled dark roses until you have smelled Mon Nom. It manages to smell spiritual and sexual which is a little weird but very cool. It smells a lot like Epic Woman by Amouage, which figures because the same perfumer made both scents 3 years apart from each other, but Mon Nom, which came out after Epic, smells more unisex overall and to me it's more of an improvement on the Epic idea. Many men consider Lyric Man by Amouage to be the best rose fragrance ever made that a man can wear. Mon Nom Est Rouge is more masculine to me than Lyric man and more interesting than Lyric Man. Lyric man, which I also own, is a very well made rose fragrance but there is something about Lyric Man that smells very old school lady. Mon Nom smells neither handsome or pretty. It's both genderless and timeless. It was made 8 years ago but smells like a niche scent that could've come out yesterday. Many Rose/ Incense fragrances contain oud in them to make them more unisex and sexy. Mon Nom goes a different route utilizing tons of spices in the form of ginger, cumin, cardamom, pink pepper, cinnamon and vanilla. U don't typically find spice to that degree in many rose fragrances and this is what elevates Mon Nom beyond scents it's compared to imo. Mon Nom is very thick and dense but starts off breathy and airy. The pink pepper and ginger really come off my skin in the early stages. The rose lets it self be known from the get go and it will remind you of the jammy roses you've smelled in other niche fragrances. This jammy rose just comes off different due to the co star notes in the perfume. I get any where from 8- 10 hours every time I wear it and it will stick to cloth for days. I'd recommend using Mon Nom Est Rouge for night out scenarios or cold weather day scenarios that don't include the office. I'd wear it in all seasons but summer. This is another scent which will make people notice you. It's very bold and will work best on confident people. Big personalities or social folks, this is the rose for you. Get a sample of it. Folks with a more conservative style or introverts may want to steer clear. Mon Nom will make you a center of attention so if you are the type to be self conscious when people can smell your fragrance, skip this one. If I had to think of negatives about it: *If u don't like strong scents skip this...Or you could simply learn how to wear strong fragrances. (1-2 sprays under your clothes and not on exposed skin like your neck)... *If your not in a certain phase in your fragrance journey this may not appeal to you. This isn't an easy fragrance. If u are in the stinky cheese phase of your journey, you might get why this scent is awesome but if you are in the cheddar cheese phase of your journey this will likely be too much. Come back to it in a couple years tho. As you can see i have issues thinking of things to say to bash it. I really dig this fragrance. If I had to rate it using my P>A>G>E> rating system, i'd rate it an Exceptional or an "E" scent. It's again one of the best rose fragrances a man can wear today and I stand behind that 100%. Women smell amazing in it also. Mon Nom Est Rouge just smells sexy and few rose fragrances smell sexy. If you like dark fragrances, spicy fragrances or rose fragrances, I would really consider this...Hell if you hate rose fragrances, I still would recommend this one. This is indeed fairy tale in a bottle. This fragrance tells a story which is intense, intriguing, quirky yet at the same time conceals a dark shadow like mystery. It is such a great story you just don't know where to start and yet for some reason can not remember how it ends because long after you worn it, long after it is gone, the story keeps going on in the depths of your subconscious. This fragrance starts indeed with that fizzy pop sparkling behavior the previous user mentioned. Just when I thought the fizzy face would just remain for just a few minutes. However it keeps bubbling for easily 2 to 3 hours on my skin. And I never expected the effect to last so long. Even though it is a smell, it tastes like sparkling sweet red muscat wine with a lot of interesting facets. There is indeed a lot going on to keep you entertained for hours and hours. This is an intense orchestra of notes played very well in such a manner which might be overwhelming to others. I personally think this entire composition is great on all levels. Scent wise, strength wise, longevity wise and quality wise. Applause to the perfumer for making a fragrance which is true to it's name. Her name is Red and one would be lucky to fall for the magic she has to reveal. With this review I have failed in being able to explain to you how this fragrance smell like. It's just that this fragrance is one I highly recommend you to try along your fragrance journey. You may not like it because it may not suit your personality very well , however you will highly appreciate and respect it for the long hours of interesting olfactory entertainment it has to offer.

Mon Nom Est Rouge - "My Name is Red" is a book title by Orhan Pamuk, a favorite of Majda's. She tried to capture the color red in a fragrance. She said: "We decided it is a spiced rose. Rose with a velvety sensation, with a metallic taste of blood from its thorns." This is gorgeous. I agree with reviewer majestic mammy, this is similar to Amouage Epic Woman! Also with amaraztavich's friend, it does at times smell like the inside of the little wooden cedar souvenir boxes. Beautiful blend of turkish rose, incense, and cedar. One benefit, I did not develop full anosmia at any point. Emphasis on the different notes shifted continually. When my nose developed a tolerance for one note, another emerged and took its' place so that I was able to enjoy the perfume all day. For a time, I could smell the tobacco, then the amber, then cinnamon, with the rose/cedar/incense accord to support it all. Overall the strength of the fragrance stayed strong and was a pleasure to wear. Majda, and her perfumer who created the scent, Cecile Zarokian, did accomplish their goals. This is a complex, lovely perfume. The above quote is from Serguey Borisov's article on Fragrantica where he interviewed Majda at the Pitti Fragranze in '12. You can read her favorite passages from the book in the article, along with the ideas Zarokian had, about notes to paint the picture of the fragrance. A beautiful story to inspire the fragrance!

I don't understand those haters who think about themselfs that they have such a great nose and great feeling about every smell, or note or accord.They even find very easy synthetics or natural smells, iso E super in Mon Mom est Rouge, but not in all series of Comme de Garcons or Encre Noir for men. I bought several times perfumes that have eulogies from those great noses and I just found myself in front of a submediocre perfumes. I think that this perfume in not that bad, it doesn't at all smell like ISO E Super or incense. In my country we burn inside the house and churches incense for the beautiful smell and I can find it in here. From the votes this one should smell like Portrayt of a Lady- Frederic Malle, and it is not. I think that smelling perfumes is better with comparation. So...try Akkad and see the similarities...like elemi resins and see what this smell it's about. I think this is a very warm perfume and very nice. Don't buy or not buy perfumes from the tales in here. Buy whatever your nose and soul likes. "Les conosseurs" should try to make their own "very natural" perfume.

This is true olfactive and presentation artistry. I don’t find this feminine at all. I think it’s in the middle. Portrait of a Lady is more feminine than this one. This is less sweet and more incense. POAL incense came through very nice on my skin, but it wasn’t enough as rose steals the show. Mom mom is perfect to me. Dry incense forward, rose in the background (on me). It reminds me slightly of Kilian Incense Oud, which is in my top 5 fragrances ever made. I love Majdas offerings because I absolutely love incense. It’s one of my favorite notes in perfumary. This marks the end of my sample. I just ordered a bottle of that tells you what I think of this fragrance. I wore it today and it lasted much longer than I thought it was going to last. I had a bottle of incense Oud by Kilian on order, but then got a message from the seller saying they already sold it. Oh well, I saved $180 by getting a 50ml of this. I am impressed with Bekkali’s use of incense, I am very picky with incense, but this is just magnificent! 9.5/10

I love Mon nom est rouge: I think it's beautiful. It's a beautiful rose; a very earthy rose, red and wild. With gorgeous gentle and also sweet and rich spices, with a lovely rich incense, and amber and sweet creamy vanilla. I love it! It lasts extremely well - 12 hours or more, and stays lovely and strong. I'd put it on early in the morning, and when my friend visited around 5pm (I'd put it on at 4am) the first thing she said was 'Mmmmm.....delicious smell!! What gorgeous perfume!'. It's a very enticing and sensual, wild perfume. It's terrific, and my husband really loves it too, and even wears it himself sometimes! He's not really much of a perfume wearer, but..............sometimes it's just too alluring to resist!!! And I adore the gorgeous gorgeous bottle. I love Majda's bottles!!! They are fantastic! Really beautiful pieces of art. I'm completely besotted!!!!

Smells like a cross between Amouage Epic and Estee Lauder Amber Mystique with a touch of Calligraphy Rose. If you like two or three of those, it's worth just having this one instead since it's the best of all three thrown in together as one. Beautifully done! The woman who wears this will stand out in a crowd. It's really more of a spicy oriental than floral, with strong rose but also a host of other mysterious-smelling notes. The cardamom is my only deal-breaker here since it doesn't work well with my skin, so I personally opt for Epic. Nevertheless, I highly recommend Mon Nom Est Rouge among spicy rose perfumes.

LOVE. Powerful, dusty incense and dry, crunchy wood form the base. Sharp, heady rose up top. A brilliant creation that seems to borrow the best ideas from the likes of Bond's Marriage Equality (its crunchiness) and Portrait of a Lady (its incense core and pointy rose) but mixes in some creative destruction, some sprezzatura. It manages to be both rich and spare at the same time. Performance is top-tier and largely linear. This is Portrait of a Lady's well-traveled, bisexual, bohemian, polyglot half-sister. Not as conventionally beautiful, but more funky and challenging; mind, both are at the apogee of perfumery.

Mon Nom est Rouge has made its way directly into my "must-haves." With the first spray, I was left stunned: a powerful blend of notes that instantly reminded me of the scent of a dried red rose, surrounded by spices. As it develops, this rose creates a perfect harmony with the incense, evoking a sense of well-being and even a certain freshness. I can't help but keep sniffing my wrist; it's a masterpiece. I feel transported to an Oriental night, perhaps in Istanbul, where Pamuk’s namesake book is set. Beautiful, passionate, sensual. The longevity and sillage are remarkable.

This is a knockout fragrance. Phenomenal. Pepper, spices, elemi, incense, cedar, ginger and one powerful rose. It opens with a bright almost effervescent quality, a carbonated peppery ginger that tingles and pops. Then the composition opens up and the rose appears accompanied by the orchestra of supporting notes. Each note has a strong presence yet the notes are all perfectly blended, coming in and out of focus, taking turns at the forefront. This is award-level artistry. Simply amazing. Highly complex and mood lifting. Lasts 18+ hours (not exaggerating) 10/10.

Easily one of my favorite rose based perfumes. Dark resinous rose, prickly green stems and the darkest red rose petals. It's opulent, misterious, spicy, just the right amount of sweet and very incense -y. Superb! Likeliness to Epic Amouage is not far off but I need both in my life. Mon nom est rouge is like the grown up sister of Epic, more rose, more amber, more of everything, whereas (and I can't believe I'm saying this) Epic is more light and carefree incense sibling. Melisandre from Game of thrones is probably wearing this perfume...

Gorgeous! The parallel to Epic by Amouage is spot on and considering the price, I'd rather take a leap to get this one before Amouage, also as its more wearable and very slightly sweeter. Really love ginger-elemis play here with rose and smoke. And really like that cumin is way toned down here. Edit Sept 2021: I did in fact get Epic, its also very fresh and fit for even summer, but Mon Nom est Rouge is still in my want-list... can't have too much of a good scent profile ;)

A blast of pepper, a swirl of cumin and cardamom then suddenly a flash of powdery rose. Est Rouge is an assault on the senses for the first few minutes, like a walk through a spice bazaar. It is definitely a close relation to Epic Woman but somehow less brazen, and maybe a bit more girlish with a stronger traditional floral beating heart and occasional jammy sweet hints of fruit. Lovely, but you probably don't need both this and Amouage in your collection.

WOW! This is an amazing spicey incensy rose fragrance on me. I can see why folk mention amouage epic woman. It is very similar to Epic. So intense! I also have Rumba Passion and John Galliano edp and they are no way as strong and intense. I get a big hit of ginger, cardamom and cumin. Towards the end it is a true incense bomb. This is a beast and a half. I would say its a unisex fragrance. Amazing sillage and great longevity.

My full bottle has arrived! The smooth pebble bottle, the wood cap, the 32% oil Parfum inside, it’s all art. Majda puts some real heart into this gorgeous fragrance. Incense must be a love for her, it sure is me. The rose is perfect, this is an amped down rose amped up incense version of Portrait of a Lady, but better. This stuff is monster on performance as well. Damn, so happy I found this scent. 10/10

This is hands down, the strangest, most addictive perfume I own! Campari. Coca-Cola. Rosewater Lokum. Frankincense. Amber. This is what I get. I cannot begin to describe how beautiful and unusual it is. All I know is, this is fast becoming one of my favourites. Longevity and sillage is bombastic! I cannot wait to try the rest of the scents from this house.

Opening aldehyde almost "metal", with pink pepper very pronounced and supported by cinnamon and incense. sophisticated and unisex perfume. Ideal for the days of autumn or even winter, strong enough and durable! In the drydown it becomes sensual. Overall it smells good, I like! Sillage: 8.5/10 Longevity: 9./10 Scent: 8./10 Overall: 8./10

Truly fantastic! Rose gorgeous rose: and spices galore!! Intense and refined; deep and complex; thrilling and exotic; smooth and sharp; creamy and earthy. It's beautiful. Magical. Laaaaaaasts so long - it's brilliant!!! And Perfect sillage ; my husband loves (and wears!) it too - on us both. We Love it. And what a fabulous bottle!!!!!

Such a cool, complex scent! Reminds me of enjoying vanilla rose jam on toast with incense burning in the room. Not too rosey or smokey. Such a beautiful, comfortable depth to this, and it's so well balanced! It's not an everyday wear for me, since I'm not crazy for rose, I just HAD to try a bunch from this brand.

I got a decant and l LOVE it! Pure rose incense delight and long lasting. I discovered that layering Roses Vanille from Mancera and Full Incense from Montale smell very similar! I am in heaven because l have those two and don't need to buy another perfume!

I’m not into roses . But this is stunning. High temperature,texturized,almost savory and spicy in beginning rose amber, evolving, sometimes dry and hot, dark and luminous , very present and not heavy at all. Vampy and classy with beautiful performance.

First impression: a gorgeous, complex spicy incense. There’s a smidge of sweetness, but it’s subtle. I’m absolutely surprised by the scent, and dare I say, Mon Nom est Rouge is my favorite incense perfume. This is a great perfume. I want it.

Just beautiful signature scent and total compliment getter. Cecile is genius; this is the perfume that got me into fallowing her creative path and find new and new masterpieces. Longevity as long as silage is enormous.

This wonderful, warm and deep, rich fragrance opens like a Campari and ends with dry rose accents - similar to those in Lyric for woman, Amouage. And this how it ends is definitely the weakest part of the composition.

Similar to Amouage Epic only Mon nom est rouge are sweeter. Feminine, elegant, and can definitely be your signature. A wonderful, luxurious, warm and deep scent that knocks you off your feet. Compliments guaranteed!

If anyone wants this scent on a budget, it's very similar to davine's hair care product's signature scent. Specifically, their all in one milk. I'd still get the perfume if for nothing else but the bottle design.

Smell of incense and spices is so deep and sensual. I love every minute I wear it on me. It so unisex, even my father is wearing same perfume and it smells rich and spicy. Good for winter period.

A fragrance full of love, passion, and joy. I don’t know if any other scent will ever stir such deep feelings in me. A bouquet full of roses at its heart, wrapped in spicy warmth.

Such a complex perfume! I love it! Incense, rose with a hint of geranium, and spices—all well blended. Be careful with the dosage! If over-sprayed, it becomes more incense-heavy.

haven't smelled epics but this indeed does have that Amouage vibe to it and for third of the price? sign me up.

Comparing this side by side to Amouage Epic, which I was very impressed with. Upon first spray I was really struggling to tell the difference, these are very similar. A spicy, oriental, rosey, balsamic beautiful concoction, with ample incense. 100% up my alley. Main difference upon first spray is that Mon has a soapy incense vibe which I attribute to the elemi note. Epic on the other hand is a more spicy peppery incense although Mon has ample amounts of spice as well. The caraway note is also a key difference which is quite prominent in Epic, an aspect that I hadn't felt when tried by itself as strongly, but now that I am comparing it really is a piercing difference and note. Not cumin either, caraway, which is a much less "sweaty" and much more "herbal" (Very familiar with both in cooking - caraway is more often used in Europe than cumin is.) This note is in fact very strong throughout and - now upon second try I have to say dominates Epic. Mon is a more warm sweet oriental with it's cardamom, ginger and cumin. Both gorgeous, I do however think Mon is a safer blind buy and more of a crowd pleaser in lack of it's distinctive focus on any one note - which I am really feeling in Epic with the caraway, although tried on it's own and not side by side with this one, may not be as pronounced.

such an enjoyable scent. tested it on paper and i was hooked and this one stayed on my mind even after testing a couple of 500$+ niche scents at the same time .i got a combination of spices and smoke at the opening .after one hour the smoky notes toned down and i got cardamom, ginger, rose, warm incense ,vanilla and musks and now its heavy on musks, vanilla and sandal wood after 7 hours. basically the more it sits the sweeter it gets. highly recommend you trying it out, the opening slightly reminded me of the royal tobacco from amouage but the balance of other notes with its smoky opening made it far more wearable and more to my likings.

Her name is Scarlet. Or Maroon. She’s a red bordering on black. She’s a spicy beast and she will kick you in the teeth if you speak to her with disrespect. This is an 80s shoulder pad board room shark. Or conversely a 90s goth. This is a dominatrix who’s always fully booked. I get very little rose or sweetness from this. It’s incense and cumin. In the dry down I get a fair dose of patchouli and a waft of weed. I just tried Loubifunk and although I like that one there’s no “funk” in it. Mon nom is Funk- unapologetic funk.

On my skin, it's an odd dichotomy between prominent elemi and ginger, and prominent amber cinnamon. I can tell all of these ingredients are of good providence, but they compete for space and it makes it off balance for me. The quality seems like it's there, and I typically enjoy the scents individually, but it feels muddled on my skin. That said, it's still pretty good because I can tell there's good stock in this juice. Just needs a little focus and better direction of what it wants to be. Scent 6.6/10 Performance 7/10

A Middle Eastern evening in a bottle; the rich blend of Turkish roses, incense, dried fruits and spices. A beautiful mysterious woman combing her hair behind a window. The window is slightly open, the curtains touched by a breeze of gentle, warm air. She is singing softly, maybe as a way to comfort herself. A voice like velvet, drenched in melancholy, dissolving beautifully into the night. You can see her silhouette subtly through the dark red curtains, only hinting at what beauty lies beneath.

Smells like Coca Cola on blotter and for the first 30 mins on skin. Then it develops into a spicy chai kind of smell, more spicy than milky but still with a round creamy feel. The resins and spices are so masterfully blended it is virtually impossible to distinguish them. The longevity is superb - lasted for over 24 hours on skin. I would disagree with its similarity with Amouage Epic Woman, as Epic Woman is a lot sweeter, brighter and crispier spice, whereas MB is softer and creamier.

This is really beautiful. I agree with the comparisons to Epic Woman (both are Cecile Zarokian creations). However, Epic Woman didn't click with me as perfectly as Mon Nom Est Rouge does. MNER has that cardamom edge that I love, and is just a touch airier, so a more wearable rose for me. Also, I will choose this over Epic Woman anyday, for the simple fact that they offer multiple different size bottles: 10ml, 50ml or 100ml. Amouage please take note!

On me this smells more like ginger ale than a spicy rose. It's very complex and should be worn in colder months, but I had a craving for something warm (more like hot, in this case), so I used up my sample right away. I enjoy it, yet won't buy it: I think there are smoother offerings out there.

Rosey coca cola! Almost reminds me of Lubin Akkad for the powder side of it, but this has pink pepper and rose. Very nice and classy, a great suited up night scent. Incense is here, but it just adds texture, its never too much. Try this if you like: Roja Enigma Pour Homme, Lubin Akkad

Powerful, fatal, all-consuming. Deep dark red borderline black with all the nuances of purple, ruby. Dominant spicy incense soon develops to a resinous, spicy rose and fades to a woody amber base. Insanely beautiful and superior to Epic.

A religious perfume; cumin, spices and incense give off a feeling of sacredness and that's good, very good!

reminds me of Penhaligons Ruthless Countess, only better

So I finally get a sample from this fragrance thinking that I would love it, because I do love Epic Woman from Amouage. But... The truth is that I find Epic more interesting and more complex than this one, simply because I love the cumin and the oud from there. Comparing these two side by side, you`ll notice a big difference between them. This one is a bit more fruity for me, more girly, where Epic is a more sensual fragrance, a more mature and more unisex. It`s not bad, I can appreciate a good perfume but for something more sober, elegant and for a buy, I`ll go with Epic all the way. This is a bit more sweet than Epic, because of the ginger and cardamom where Amouage`s creation is on the dry side, with the cumin predominant note. You`ll feel the difference between these two better if you try them in fresh air, especially in the cold season. In the air, Epic is magnificent. Even if both of them are Ms. Zarokian creation, I believe she did better with Amouage.

straight baby powder to me but its soo addicting to smell. its like petrol. i wouldn't want to wear it but i love to smell it again and again. smells very powdery with a hint of spice. my mom loves this though, so i view it as an 'older lady' fragrance

Yes to this! It smells like a sparkling artisan gin that’s heavy on the juniper and with peppercorns floating in fizzy tonic. I like it but I don’t want it.

the most pure cola scent absolutely nothing interesting for me way too sweet and lineal

This is a similar to the base notes of epic woman by amouage. However I have removed my previous review as now I've tried Mon Nom Est Rouge over and over. sometimes a tiny sample is not the same explosion as spritzing a larger decant or bottle. This is a mimic of Epic Woman. This is not something I would buy again nor is the dry down appealing. Smells very synthetic. While Epic Woman by Amouage , which first few seconds smells like twins but side by side noooooooo.,Epic is far far farrrrrrrr better in every single note in its composition. This is literally not that good Mon Nom Est Rouge was release in 3 years after epic woman which was created in 2009 created in collaboration with Daniel Maurel..

Cumin really ruins this blend for me. Powerful, yet bad. I totally agree with @violeteme on fatal and all-cosuming. I had to wash it off my wrist a minute later. Not a safe blind buy. Definitely test first.

The elemi here probably smells like olibanum or frankincense, but is resinous in a bit sour way. The smoky churchy side of it is beautiful, but in this regard I personally prefer Armani Prive Sable Nuit. And from aromatic stand point, it reminds me of Amouage Epic pour femme, but I find Epic richer and more complex and doesn’t have the “red” side to it. Which Amouage Lyric pour femme has and does it even better by muffling then sourness of the resins. If you like all these, it’s worth exploring MNeR, which combines the qualities of all three. If that particular scent profile slot in your collection is still vacant, MNeR can be the gateway to your infatuation with other similar perfumes and their emphasis on certain notes or accords. The drydown is very nice and soft and blends well with the skin. Gives the sensation of natural ingredients. But some cold ginger-geranium note comes in, which I associate with Nishane Nanshe. As if the red coldness of Nanshe was drenched in the warm resins of Amouage Material and topped with Amouage Epic and takes you through a photoalbum of a portfolio. Cecile is quite a pragmatic perfumer it seems and although there’s nothing wrong with playing it safe, I wish to see more of her inspired side - taking some uncharted routs and bring us along. Like many creators out there who are willing to take chances, she doesn’t know what her wings are capable of until she makes a leap out of the comfort zone. Or not - then she can establish as The Andrier of Epic-Nanshe spectrum, and we’ll enjoy that too. And for the record, I didn’t read the reviews below prior to capturing my own thoughts to avoid being suggested impressions which aren’t my own. Also, I hadn’t looked up who the perfumer was, until now, when the pieces started clicking together while I was writing down my experience. All aforementioned perfumes are made of accords that are mixed and matched and shuffled to display seemingly different results. What I mean by that: think of a Pavlova cake - it reminds you of fresh cream (cuz it has some); of meringue (cuz it has some), of fruit (cuz it has some), of fruit AND cream (cuz it has the combo), of meringue with cream (cuz it has the combo) etc ... you get my point... and if you like the ingredients you can go explore all “new” recipes from the same chef. It’s going to be a pleasant experience. And see which balance of ingredients and combinations gets your taste just right and recognize your keeper.
