Psychotrope

Psychotrope, from the Scandinavian brand Malbrum Parfums, is a 2015 release, a spicy resinous blend with notes of incense, elemi, pimento, saffron, and mixed woods. Dense, rich, a little and sharp and savory, it offers a spicy, slightly smoky intersection that is not too exaggerated in any one respect. I regard the woods as being more in the background to the resins and spices, but certain they provide some modification to preclude the experience from being wholly a bomb of, say, incense and saffron. Pimento adds a bit of flavor, and perhaps is the source of the savoriness that I perceive, and it has a varnish-adjacent aspect in the background that I like, which reminds me of the unrelated Dua original, Wood and Cognac. Psychotrope (along with the rest of the line, seemingly) is extrait concentration, priced at $135 for 30ml, sold in the US via the house site, the boutique Perfumology and some other points of sale like Max Aroma. For a fragrance of this potency and sophistication, I think it’s reasonably priced as a little should go a long way, even in cooler climates. 8 out of 10

This is a great fragrance. The notes carry a beautiful sweet cypress/woody scent & thank god I came across this. I own a full 30mL bottle and have been wearing it non-stop. My favorite place to wear it is on beach days or intimate nights. It doesn't last longer than 4-5 hours, but I use an Iso-E super spray to get some serious 6+ longevity out of it. Overall, this is a unisex fragrance that is best during the day or when in close contact with others at night.

a sticky, slightly naturally sweet but not sweetened light wood with the freshness of cypress that feels like an aftertaste. When you breathe out is when you notice it. I cannot think of anything similar. It almost feels plummy but not quite. Def bottle-worthy, have worn my sample many times now.

A warm animalic fragrance with a beautiful sandalwood at its heart. Subtle notes of cypress and incense bring crisper accents but the woody base with styrax and ambergris (ambroxan?) stir the senses into a darker and more erotic landscape. A deeply sensual fragrance. I love it!

The brand itself calls this “bold and unconventional niche”, so I thought; why not try it, since they make that claim. This was the first one that caught my attention: the bottle has animal motifs, and the presence of cypress and styrax signalled it might be right up my alley. First impression: sweeter than I expected. Yes, it’s very woody and definitely bold, but there’s also an amber-like warmth and sweetness that comes through. I love it for its woody and balsamic qualities; the incense level is excellent and well-balanced. It never overwhelms, neither raw olibanum nor overly smoky: just right. I’d imagined it would be very animalic, but it isn’t. To me, it reads more balsamic-woody with a hint of amber. Thanks to its bold and shadowed facets, I’d call it strong and full of character. Unconventional? Not really; at least not this one. I’ll have to try the others before I decide. Alluring? Yes! Very much so. Tag(s): Bold, dark, balsamic

Bought this as a blind buy for like $55. At first spray, something about the type of woods, and the big hit of pepper and ambergris did not sit well with me. But this isn’t returnable, so I had to see if I could learn to love it. That did not take long. Once the initial strong burst of someone pissed in the woods went away, it settled down to a great resinous, a little spiced, full bodied wood. Hints of incense smoke are there and fade in and out. More ambery on the dry down, with a great tiny pinch of sweetness. Solid 8/10.

Resinous cypress and saffron. Personal bias in full effect here. Not my favorite notes. It's done well enough. Refined and subtle, maybe to a fault. After smelling other offerings from this house, and being affectionately wow'd, I'm a little bit underwhelmed here. That said, I have to be an adult. I wouldn't wear this. It's a meh for me. But, objectively, it's good enough.

This is a cautious like for me for now. Need to try this out in more situations and times of the day. I was very intrigued by someone saying this is best work on summer nights when you want to be intimate with someone. Can`t wait to make closer friends with this unique beauty.

Psychotrope is not a bad fragrance, I think it's just not my personal style. The sandalwood is the part I like, the rest...not crazy about it. I don't know how to explain this scent, I guess it's a base of sandalwood surrounded by elements that are at times coniferous (cypress), smoky (incense), peppery (pimento), and also kind of resinous/ambery. All of that sounds amazing, but it falls kind of flat to me. Like it has all the elements of an intriguing, mysterious, pull you in warm perfume, but it doesn't actually pull me in. The combination of notes comes off kind of like overripe bananas and sweet hardwood floors, which is...not how I want to smell.

This is simply unpleasant; it smells like something went really wrong. It’s a mix of woods, florals, and gourmand notes that smell charred — kind of like when you leave a pan unattended on the stove and whatever’s inside sticks to the side and starts to burn. Sulfurous, singed cardboard over something deep-fried and ripe is probably the best way I can describe this perfume, and this stuff is loaded to the gills with painful, scratchy synthetics. The opening reminds me a little of the opening of Ephemera’s Noise, only it’s cast more foody and sickly here. All in all, too muddled from an avant-garde perspective and too unpalatable for commercial appeal. I’ve worn it twice, but I had to scrub it off during the second wear as it made me feel ill.

Caramel! where is the caramel note? biscuit caramel note! spicy caramel fragrance it is . i just disliked the top note as the caramel showed up disgracefully mixed with spices like cumin & something i can't define clearly... after a while the incense comes up and the disturbing caramel vanishes while Pimento raises up with some chili note. this needs more tests to decide and mostly on my hand, will check on it later.

This smells like dirty little fingers in dirty little places. It comes on pretty strong and animalic - almost cumin-like, skanky oud notes. The leopard spotted bottle is a pretty big cue as to the scent. Their marketing says you’ll get noticed and you probably will in the wrong environment. It is not a bad smell, and it lasts 8+ hours, but you need to be ready for it. The funk stays the entire wearing.

Insanely beautiful smokey spicy skankiness. I have no idea what in here is even conveying that bodily note, it's not quite cumin, not quite hyrax, nothing like that. Just something in the way some of this stuff is combining that comes off like a hot body in one of the best ways I've smelled in a fragrance. Absolutely love.

I get the comparison with Amouage Epic Woman, but hear me out... it’s actually more like Amouage Silver Oud without the oud. So, like Silver Oud once it’s overpowering barnyard Oud opening settles down and you are left with slightly charred woods and resins
