BD

BD is achingly gorgeous. I'm going all-in with this review by starting off saying BD presents one of and perhaps the best jasmine accord I have yet to smell in a perfume. Period. Honeyed white florals, earthy indoles and parching mothballs, sweet and animalic civet, gentle green pea edges, and a touch of creamy tree fruits. The opulence and warmth of the jasmine stuns me into a frozen position, its narcotic opulence, richness, sultry carnality, and elegance is a wonder to behold as it fills the room around me. To this last point, this is also probably the most powerful perfume in Mallo's lineup; real jasmine has the ability to be smelled far away, its aromas vibrantly carried on the breeze, and BD behaves no less similarly. The first day I wore it filled my bedroom, it filled my car on the way to work, it trailed behind me everywhere I walked where no less than four or so people had compliments and questions equating to jaw drops. It is remarkably like Fils de Joie, another jasmine great, but warmer, richer, saturated, and well-rounded. After several hours of feeling like I might faint at any moment, BD shifts into a quieter, deeper, and even more sultry animalic woody profile - and I still continue to feel like I might faint. It's here we see a significant portion of how Lasheras built-up the jasmine accord in the opening layer as we are greeted with Assam oud, castoreum and styrax, and a less-disguised civet. The Assam oud is beautifully oily and resinous, warm and slightly sweet, rich tobacco without the vanillics, and with a bit of smokey incense; its bass harmonics significantly expanded with the leathery and musky animalic frequencies of the castoreum, styrax, and civet. This leathery/musky/fecal/animalic profile recalls the properly old school yesteryear perfumes, which is to say it is very familiar but without being derivative. Seductive and divine. As with all Mallo and Lasheras compositions, the minimalist presentation of BD allows the superb materials to shine; to showcase Lasheras's abilities of identifying an exquisite ingredient when he smells it, and to handle it with the respect needed to let all of its facets be clear. It is hard to believe this perfume has a very small handful of materials in it - but it does. This review is unusually brief for the experience BD has given me over several days, but I cannot say much more other than laying on one more superlative after one more compliment after more unhelpful onomatopoeia for enamored noises, so I won't continue further. If you love jasmine, and you love oud, you need to smell this. This is my favorite Mallo perfume, which is to say it's one of my favorites in the entirety of my perfume collection.

A vintage style floral animalic centered around a very indolic jasmine grandiflora. The central heavy note is surrounded by styrax, civet, castoreum and slight sandalwood. The feminine leaning scent has moderate to strong sillage and good longevity. Not sure what BD stands for but you can imagine someone like Bette Davis wearing this in the 1940s. Many similarities to Serge Lutens Fils de Joie but with actual animal musks. A sensualist delight. (Review of complimentary bottle)

If you love animalic perfume you will find it interesting.Definitely vintage styled.Notes are blended nicely and no one will find it overwhelming.Civet and Jasmine makes you want to spray it again and again.Very similar to feel Oud,Oud de Grand with Jasmine and Oud.Moderate longevity.

I was introduced to the work of a number of talented perfumers by intrepid friends this summer, and one of my favorites is the Spain-based Antonio Lasheras’ house Mallo. I truly think he does animalic notes like no other. Under his nose they are soft, delicate, and sultry - taking on approachable and enticing characteristics. That said, when he reaches for a skanky jasmine powerhouse, he gets there, and then some. BD is the most floral of his creations, centered around highly indolic Jasmin Grandiflora. Evoking the likes of torrid and undeniable flapper flamboyances like Caron’s 1924 Acaciosa, the white floral notes take center stage as a call to sensuality and illicit sex. Underneath, thrown fur civet boils like blood. There is also the more smoky castoreum here, but overall the urinary pungency of civet wins out as the predominant support to this jasmine soliflore. It’s a combination as old as perfume itself, but Lasheras makes it smell relevant and invigorating now. Think Lutens Sarassins at the cat cafe, or Rita Hayworth as the life-ruiningly stunning Gilda. Maybe this is delusional of me, but I truly think that if given the chance, I could convince a number of women my age with no interest in niche perfume to at least order and routinely wear a 15ml decant of this fragrance. I see so many poor lost souls oedipally afraid to smell like their mothers and even more needlessly terrified to smell like their badass grandmothers, griping over fragrances that feel boring - lamenting the skin scent industrial complex’s hold over the post-Glossier You consumer base, making everything smell like nothing and nothing smell like everything. Look no further, I want to whisper to these women, that pissy white floral will save you. Btw.
