Gentleman

The new reformulation has been also lost for quite some time. I've contacted Beauty Brands International - the Marbert's distributors - and they assured me, that starting from this April 2019, the Gentleman could be found on the market again and that's for 14€! Oh boy! I have the old formulation and the new one (in a rectangular bottle). In the latest is the civet note the same as in the old one. Main difference is, that the opening of the new one is brighter and much, much more spicier (to my nose the opening has a little bit of the Aramis Devin's vibe!) and has a pinch of aldehydes. I like the new one more to be honest. Longevity and projection - perfect! After 2 hours you end up with very prominent Kouros-vintage Givenchy Gentleman-civet note. The old one starts directly with the "pissy" note and smells almost like the overnight pamp. of my little son :) Apropos Marbert's Gentleman is far more animalic than the Givenchy's and the Davidoff "Classic". To me this is like a younger brother of Kouros. It is rare to find animalic perfumes these days among all the tonka bean and ambroxan cr*p. Have faith! The Gentleman will walk the earth again...

I got the vintage version of this thing and boy... OH BOY, or should I say OH MAN! This thing is pungent. It cuts through the air with this animalic and musky sharpness and lingers for quite a while. Aggressively masculine to the point of being slightly stinky (or very stinky, depending on who you ask). I decided to do 2 sprays after gym and go home. My girlfriend said I'm stinking up the whole place so you can imagine the sillage and longevity. This perfume smells like Kouros' older and more outspoken cousin that smokes cigars and drinks whiskey. A freshly shaved, old dude that doesn't mess around. He is not too elegant and doesn't smile much, but you know he is a kind soul, simple and down to earth. A less poetic description would be - You smell like someone lit a turd on fire (an actual comment I got) so tread lightly. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone under the age of 30 or even older than that. This is not your everyday barbershop fragrance. If I wasn't clear enough, this fragrance can be encapsulated in one sentence - It stinks so good!

Aha!That's a good new,Mr.NordStorm!I have the new iteration of this,i find it very strong on the animalics!For me it hasn't a younger vibe as Kouros,for me it's the opposite.W Marbert!They can still produce great fragrances from their past!I have tried the new Uomo,that isn't still on Fragrantica,but it is a total copy of Terre d'Hermes Parfum,same strength too!

i gave you up there all the similars .. but wait a minute!! until today i don't why people says that this castoreum is a civet!? i know there is a civet but the whole animalic in all of these perfumes are castoreum not civet! if you realy want to smell the real civet try jicky of guerlain and you will know what civet smells like.. yeah the real poo poo oh yeah

I've bought today the lastest version of this scent and oh boy!Damn if it is very retro!I don't understand the other reviewers saying that this fragrance is nothing like the one before,i find it is the same only a little bit calmed down,for me is very similar to Furyo by Jacques Bogart,a beautiful scent for confident men.

have both this and cologne splash vintage made in West Germany. I dont know year but its definitely vintage. Both are amazing scents, but if someone really really love vintage i am ready to sell.

I had a miniature lotion - it was a fragrant remedy for relaxation and meditation. It sounded very grassy and resinous with something in the grass.

Unfortunately I blind-bought the new bottle going off the notes on Fragrantica. It's a smooth, rectangular bottle with GENTLEMAN on it (like the one shown above). The vintage bottle is a ribbed semicircle with MARBERT GENTLEMAN written on the lower half. It's a grey office scent. It smells very generic & inoffensive. I'm getting citrus, lavender & carnation with a generic woodsy base. It's not bad, but it certainly isn't good either. It's a perfume for a faceless gentleman who's not interested in perfumery. He doesn't make any waves. A quiet, responsible Yes-man. He might not love his job, but he goes to his office so he can provide for his family. 2.5/5 I suspect that restrictive draconic IFRA regulations have had this german beast completely castrated via reformulation. I've ordered a vintage mini-bottle so I can compare the two. I will update my review when it arrives. UPDATE: Just as I suspected. The vintage version is beautiful! It's so full of life. Opens up with a punchy galbanum, oak moss & tarragon. A few minutes later the civetone busts down the door accompanied by resinous cistus & bitter herbs (wormwood?). 4.5/5 This gentleman was a maverick rule breaker with hopes and dreams! The vintage fragrance is an oevre of his youthful optimism. In the modern version - His optimism gone. His dreams evaporated. He's been broken down by the byrocratic cynicism of the world he inhabits. New formulation is Ok. Ribbed bottle vintage version is a Love! 💗 UPDATE II: Here's some info on the modern reformulation: It's a spicy-woody-citrus fragrance released in 2012 by Straub Marbert Beauty Group / Beauty Brands International. The notes are as follows; Top Notes: Bergamot, Mandarin, Carnation 🍋 Heart Notes: Artemisia, Tonka Bean, Lavender 🌺 Base Notes: Musk, Cedar, Patchouli 🌲

Vintage (West Germany) version A very masculine scent with an animalic edge, a hint of sweetness, and a somewhat sharp character - almost as if it's trying to be fresh initially, yet a certain weightiness quickly emerges, grounding and rounding it out. Not as animalic as Lapidus Pour Homme or Kouros, yet far more elegant than either. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of Lapidus or Kouros, but this one feels much more wearable. The name Gentleman fits perfectly - it’s more refined and polished than both Kouros and LPH. It is animalic, maybe even just a bit "pissy", but it never becomes overbearing or unpleasant. It doesn’t try to scream masculinity, it simply embodies it. The best part is the drydown. Strangely, I pick up traces of Tuscany Per Uomo in the later stages. Great quality. I’d love to try the modern version for comparison.

Marbert Gentleman (original formula) is a light, fresh chypre that smells familiar to me, but I can never seem to think what else it smells like. H&R's Fragrance Guide lists the notes as: TOP: Bergamot, lemon, artemisia, galbanum, aldehyde, green note, estragon MIDDLE: Jasmine, rose, geranium, cypress, patchouli, vetiver, cedar BASE: Moss, labdanum, olibanum, musk, leather, castoreum, civet Despite the civet and castoreum in the base, it comes across more fresh and mossy than animalic, and is fairly subdued in terms of projection and sillage. This "Gentleman" is reserved, polite, and well-mannered --- one who impresses with understatement and quiet confidence rather than by commanding attention.

This bad boy sits next to the Bogart brothers Furyo & OMS Gold Edition, Yatagan, Devin, Kouros, Hugo Boss #1, Le 3' Homme de Caron, & Lapidus PH in one of the Deluxe Suites on the home team 40 yard line. Even the reformulation in blocky rectangular bottle is bad-ass.

Here we have the grand Teutonic animalic that is Marbert Gentleman. I've heard great things about more recent formulations of this juggernaut, but I grabbed an older bottle, with its handsome ribbed semi-circle design that is lost in its newer incarnation. The mythical alpha male, the search for Quentin Crisp's 'great dark man,' the virile, the virulent...whole dissertations could be written on how the stoicism of modern man has been represented culturally, and how its been fetishized. Peel back the layers and we reveal the sensuality and vulnerability of it all. I have long been fascinated by this duality, the conflict, especially as a non-heterosexual identifying male who has long struggled, as have many out of the heterosexual sphere, with their own identity. Wearing a fragrance like Gentleman is sort of like a love letter to this bittersweet reconciliation of affect. I refuse to cancel this legacy and I am not one for revisionist history, but I do see the paradox inside the projections (both figurative and literal), and want to honor them, embrace them, as if I am embracing manhood and letting it as whole know: yes, we know you are strong, but you are allowed to cry, be afraid, and feel uncertain. I know this exceedingly tangential for a fragrance review, but I can't help it when I experience the potent civet, honeyed patchouli, musky roses, and the hum of olibanum in this fragrance, it just sums up where we were, where we aspired to be, and where we are today. That is the fragile beauty of this fragrance, even as it sings the praises of masculinity in olfactory form. Not all masculinity it toxic, but there sure is a lot of it that's problematic. For us, animallistic scents lovers, this one must be in in collection. Everybody has association that most animallic scent is Furyo, that's quite right, but this scent also brings full animalic impression, even that animalic I would say it's far more wearable than Furyo. Very masculine, without sweetness, lot of civet and earthy patchouli, with enormous performances, very potent. My advice for everyone who wants best from this scent is to search for West Germany version, later versions are not that natural and deep as the original one. If this one is packed in some ,,artistic niche brand'' it would cost a fortune...

I'm not sure of the green colour of the juice in the picture (re-formulation? or issues with the jpg flie perhaps?) cos the one I bought was golden. This had a pungent smell, a challenge in the summer.This could actually have turned out like Boss No.1 or Quorum, that seemed to be the concept but it doesn't quite get there. Maybe applying it sparingly in cold months might do the trick. Its hard to cite any other redeeming quality in this frag.

Would somebody give me an piece of advice? Could a gaarl pull this one off as well, or it is very masculine?
