Mod Noir

I do declare Marc Jacobs did the best gardenia perfumes. Hands down. No joke. Don't argue; we'll be here all night. Seriously, though; Marc Jacobs has honestly turned me from being extremely wary towards gardenia to actively looking for others that can compare! Previously, I felt that every gardenia scent was far too heady; an overpowering uber-white floral or had that heavy butteriness that became nauseating. This is so different. A *gorgeous* fresh, green, dewy, pretty, elegant, and feminine gardenia scent. I mean, it's kind of heavenly. The green notes are always there. The citrus less so. The beautiful gardenia and water lily support the fresh lightness, and the magnolia helps with the sweet femininity. The tuberose helps with the slightly strong white floral projection. The nectarine base is *fabulous*. It really lends a juicy fruity note that is actually awesome! It works SO WELL with this scent. The orange blossom and musk aren't so noticeable, but definitely can be made out. The longevity is pretty decent. I get a good 4-5 hours with the same amount of sprays. The sillage is enchanting. *slow-mo faint* The name is bizarre - there's nothing "noir" (black in French) about this... Except the stripes, I suppose? Is that the reason? I assumed it was because it was released as an exclusive to Sephora, but I'm happy to be wrong here. *NB: Just looked it up - Marc Jacobs called this 'Mod Noir' as a throwback to the 1960s (black and white stripes being a pretty big fashion look back then; a la Mod [i.e., modern] London of the Swinging Sixties - I like the name more now. I approve of this. In fact, well done.). In short, I love this. No nay-sayers gonna convince me otherwise. OH! But don't bother trying to find this one or "Marc Jacobs" EdP (the other *fantastic* gardenia scent from MJ; that's for another review) - they're both discontinued. Because that's how the perfume universe works. Hahahahahaha, what a joke! Suckers get nothin' now! Rude, I say. D*mn rude. I've side-eyed people for less. Repurchase-worthy (if it were possible). *** Kitty rating: 8.5/10 (The discontinuation angers me).

Fresh, dewy, clean, bright, crisp, green, refreshing, subtly sweet, white floral. I really enjoy the dewy and green fresh scent of this! The opening is green, bright, fresh, and crisp thanks to the mixture of green notes and the citrusy yuzu and clementine that really adds a fresh and bright scent. The water lily adds a nice dewy and aquatic touch while the Gardenia, Magnolia, and tuberose add a lovely, fresh, white floral scent with some soft creaminess that helps to even out the fresh and green scent. The base notes really elevate the overall fragrance, making it more than just a fresh green scent with white florals. The nectarine adds a pretty, fruity sweetness with just a hint of tanginess. The orange blossom adds a beautiful and soft syrupy floral sweetness. Finally, the musk helps to softly ground the fragrance nicely. Overall, I really love this one! I typically lean the most towards beachy/coconut, sweet, and gourmand fragrances, but this is such a beautiful fresh fragrance that’s hard not to love! It reminds me of the fragrances from around 2000-2015ish. Some of the similar ones that I love from that period include VS Pink (original), Coach Legacy, Coach Signature, JPG Classique X, and Tommy Hilfiger Freedom. They all have that really pretty, fresh, green, bright, and clean vibe. It’s very different from the really sweet gourmands that are currently popular (which I also love), it’s basically the opposite of them. I do miss these types of fragrances and would love to see the ones I mentioned come back! Mod Noir has always been one of my favorites of them! I get great performance with Mod Noir. The longevity is really good, it lasts the entire day on me. The projection is nice too, it radiates out about an arm’s length from me. I especially enjoy this one during the spring and summer. As a side note the frosted glass and black striped bottle and the name itself stem from this being launched as a Sephora only exclusive fragrance to celebrate the launch of the Marc Jacobs beauty brand at Sephora.

Not sure I get the "Mod Noir" name as there's nothing unique or dark about this perfume at all. I can see how others might find this similar to the original Marc Jacobs fragrance, but to my nose Mod Noir is creamier and the the green/citrus notes are less noticible. Mod Noir definitely isn't so watery either, and has none of the sourness. Thouh I don't feel this is different enough from other gardenia/tuberose/white florals to warrant it's expensive price tag, it's very pleasant, feminine, and inoffensive. The longevity and sillage aren't great either, but I've noticed it lasts well on clothing. I'm kind of on the fence about whether or not I'm going to buy a full bottle. I definitely like it, and it's lovely for daytime wear. I'm just confident I can find something similar at a more reasonable price. Edit: The annual Sephora sale combined with a reasonably priced gift set convinced me to take the plunge. Not even a little bit sorry ;)

I would give my right kidney for this to come back. It’s a light, fresh, green scent with the prettiest white florals mixed in. It’s a little watery, stronger than you’d expect [but not suffocating], and I have yet to find anything even close to it in production today. I still have a tiny bit left in my bottle, and it’s probably going to stay there for as long as the laws of physics allow.

Mod Noir by Marc Jacobs really is not “noir” at all because this fragrance is an aquatic green gardenia. I smell dewy grass, crisp green leaves, fresh gardenia petals that have been mellowed out by the water lily, and a light hint of tuberose. I love this fragrance because it is such a light and fresh floral. It draws compliments and is great for everyday wear. The bottle is darling!

I looove it, the creamy gardenia smells delicious but unfortunately doesnt last on me. Too expensive and only lasted me 2 months.

My god! I love the opening! Tuberose often puts me off, but this is gorgeous. Can't stop sniffing. Going on my wishlist.

If white florals give you a headache, you may want to steer clear of this one. Because HELLO GARDENIA! Honestly, I smelled nothing else in this fragrance... just the exact scent of a gardenia bush an hour or so after a rain storm. Wet, heady gardenia. Period. GORGEOUS! It didn't last terribly long on me but wowzers... I'm certain that if you love the smell of gardenias, you'll love this one. Because most people here in south eastern part of the US are pretty accustomed to smelling gardenia (and many other fragrant flowers that grow well in subtropical climates), people tend to like the smell of gardenias in moderation (maybe I should have made that all caps: IN MODERATION! (grin)) so I suspect that this fragrance could be office-friendly IF you use a light hand. TL;DR? *** Ok... short version: *** * Scent: beautiful wet gardenia * Headache factor: 7/10 (above average likelihood) * Office friendliness: 5/10 (proceed with caution) I hope this helps... happy sniffing!

I have to agree with Roxana D. When first applied, this fragrance seemed like a winner for me. I loved the green citrusy top notes with white florals coming through after about 15 minutes. Unfortunately it went from being hard to stop myself from smelling it to hard to smell at all within about 2 hours. I got a barely perceptible white floral/musk mix at the end, very much a skin scent at that point. It was quite disappointing, as this fragrance seemed to have everything I was looking for in a summer scent. If you have a lot of money to burn and don't mind the longevity concerns or wish to layer this scent, this might be a good fit for you. Edit: I still find myself craving this from time to time, despite it's poor lasting power. As of July 15, Sephora is offering this as a point reward, so I think I'll pick one up to have it on hand.

I can't claim how many "white floral" notes are in this, but I can say it's a safe "White floral" fragrance for those like myself who typically DON'T like that type of scent. It's a very pleasant, safe, non-heady blend. The opening is primarily gardenia (Soft, creamy, not sharp, for a change!), and multiple hints of sweet, honey'd fruits. There's a genuine shampoo-like quality here, evoking a clean and calm feeling. Something sophisticated, but still somewhat youthful in emotion. The drydown brings around some more greenness, and overall this doesn't jump forward as a "unique" scent at all - more of the "magazine scent flap" variety. I would say that most people will find this inoffensive and pleasant, including myself - and It's definitely very difficult to find ANY scent containing white florals that I will wear, and enjoy!

I really love gardenia, but it can be a tricky thing. It's so rich and heady that it can be sickening and headache inducing. I tend to shy away from gardenia perfumes just because of how strong they are. This one is decent for the fact that the gardenia is solidly present, but the green softens it to an extent. The smell didn't turn on me (which shocked me), and the longevity was decent. Unfortunately, this just wasn't...full enough or creamy enough for me. I started to get more and more of the green as the day went on and not enough of that yummy gardenia, and I felt like this was another "superficial" perfume that sat ON my skin and didn't ever deepen and mesh with my skin. I wanted to like it, and I didn't detest it, but I was bored by it.

Boy where to start, Alright first off as most commented there is nothing really 'Noir' about this scent so why the noir tag is beyond me, if anything Mod 'Chic' is more fitting in my eyes. This pretty much is a bright white floral very heady with the Gardenia, agreed it favors the original Marc Jacobs. It's a shame really b/c the packaging & bottle are stunning, but the scent was a bit of a tosser, sorry can't vouch much for longevity or sillage as to not caring much for it to spritz on. Will say if you're a fan of the original MJ you will probably most likely enjoy this, it's not a terrible scent just nothing revolutionary, I could also see this being maybe a nice scent for your wedding day, try it out, spotted it at Sephora. :)

I love gardenia, but this fragrance had more of a “green” gardenia, like what I think a gardenia would smell like before it fully blossomed, more vegetal and grassy. It wasn’t bad at all, but I had wanted a creamier and milkier gardenia, and this tended to go much more green and musky and citrusy on me as it wore. That was also not bad, but it just wasn’t anything special. I kind of wish I hadn’t returned my bottle because I miss having a gardenia scent that didn’t give me a headache, but Floating Forest from Future Society smells very similar to this one except more creamy and dewy, so I’ll probably pick up that one as a substitute.

I grabbed a rollerball as an impulse buy a couple weeks ago at Sephora. I do like the white floral citrus combination scent, but it really fades VERY fast. I'm glad I bought the rollerball, because I'm absolutely going to have to keep it in my purse. Usually the bf comments when I'm wearing a new scent, but this didn't even get a reaction. So that's 2 strikes against it. On the positive side, this is a nice summer floral frag, not too strong, and not really generic either. I really love orange blossom, and the musk isn't too overpowering. It's mellow, at least on my skin. I'm not getting any sharp notes, just soft floral.

Hello, gardenia and TUBEROSE! Those two notes are what I got from this fragrance, especially the tuberose, all day long, and that's about it, although they are notes I enjoy so I didn't necessarily mind that the fragrance is not particularly complex. I was happy with the longevity as well. I did think the name was misleading--I expected something called Mod Noir to be a bit more chic/evening, but this turned out to be a polite little white floral I would be more inclined to wear to church or a family gathering.

Mod Noir is very fresh together with elegant white floral. It feels very upscale and sophisticated. The green and creamy white floral works so well in it. I'm not even a fan of gardenia but here I do like it. I don't get the musk so much. It's just the right amount of sweet for this type of scent. This is perfect for an evening out somewhere nice. I'm trying to figure out why the rating is so low. It's very light, fresh and bright so the name Noir is an odd choice but anyway, it's really lovely.

You definitely have to be a gardenia lover to enjoy this perfume. On first spray I thought I had found my perfect gardenia perfume--it's slightly green yet creamy and beautiful. However this phase lasts less than 30 minutes before it starts to turn more and more soapy, and less and less enjoyable (at least for me). Overall, it's too generic and uninteresting to justify the price. And there's absolutely nothing "noir" about this perfume. Great bottle, though!

I don't really like Marc Jacobs fragrances, but Mod Noir is an exception. It's got a lovely, balanced array of white florals, fronted by gardenia, and maybe just a hint of the nectarine. Is it my favorite white floral scent? No. But if someone gave me a bottle of this, I would probably keep it. I kept my sample, and that's a start.

Tried this on today. Although it is, I agree, easily forgettable and unoriginal, it's also very wearable. A simple, soft, clean scent that doesn't go funky with your body chemistry. I definitely don't hate it and would wear it if I had it. It just isn't special enough for me to want to buy a bottle. It's a "Like" for this one.

Lovely! Gardenia is one note I detest because it usually reminds me of air freshener. The gardenia in Mod is really nice - fresh, dewy, and nothing remotely like air freshener. The gardenia opening is short lived and quickly turns to a rich, tropical tuberose. I would say Mod is mainly a tuberose fragrance.

It starts out tart before turning very animalic thanks to the gardenia and magnolia. There’s a brief period where it puts me in mind of a more pleasant version of Beautiful Belle before it turns musky and tart again. I wouldn’t limit this to just nighttime wear; it’s bright and cheerful.

I can take it or leave it, really. Hello, citrus! It seemed like it was going to be too strong at first, but the dry-down softened it up after an hour. The green and floral aspect shine through after several hours...it's mostly citrus and peppery while I wait for it to chill out.

I smell a creamy, not very unique, but still beautiful tuberose. I find it more suitable for a summer night, so this is how I justify the "noir". And now, ok be polite,I need a feed back on this, it reminds me of L'artisan nuit de tubereuse, from what I can remember.

If you sort of like this but also want to smell like an adult woman, I recommend Parfums 06130 Lys. Similar notes, somewhat less sweet, with a more compelling base. Also, Lys has easily twice the longevity.

VERY Tuvache Jungle Gardenia...it doesn't connote 1960s "Mod" to me, at all. This is the scent of '50s icons like Elizabeth Taylor and Natalie Wood...or 1980s Jovan Island Gardenia. Cute bottle.

It's a pleasant scent, but so translucent. It has a soft sillage and poor longevity. It's nice for spring and softly green. The bottle is pleasant.

Nice fragrance, very chic, but something bothers me, it might be as usual - tuberose. What a shame. Bottle is ingenious!

Synthetic and straightforward gardenia. Fades into a slightly softer musk added onto the gardenia but stays sweet and creamy white floral. I love a green white floral but this one is too blah for me, gives mall vibes.

Sharp and shampooey. Fades quickly and hardly any projection. Not at all like the original Marc Jacobs, which was such a lovely gardenia scent. :(

Clean green and white floral scent. Unoffensive but not for me

I got a sample of this recently with a Sephora order, and I generally love Marc Jacobs fragrances, so I figured this would be great too. I sprayed it on, and it's a confusing, synthetic, mess. Are you a floral? Are you fruity? Are you watery? The notes clash, and you end up with a cheap smelling fragrance that closely resembles one of those Mr. Sketch scented markers that we would all huff in grade school. Avoid this one at all costs. If you want a beautiful, well-crafted gardenia fragrance go with Marc Jacobs (women) EDP by Marc Jacobs in the classy rectangular bottle.

Agree this could be a flanker to the original Marc Jacobs scent, which i love/loved (don't have it anymore). Mod Noir is okay, although seriously nothing mod or noir about it. The bottle is fine, the scent is fine, but something about it repels me when I get my nose close to the application spot. Wait, i just figured it out! There's a salty musk accord that bothers me. Must be my chemistry, but it is definitely not working foe me.

I was really amazed by the look of the bottle and the box, very refined but at the same time young and catchy. unfortunately the scent is really average. a fresh citrusy debut with a very intensive green note, that after few minutes turns into a white flower bouquet very linear and not particularly original (actually I smell also an ash note that is not so clean and pleasant). not a bad perfume but actually easily forgettable.

Blind sniff - Very basic department store fragrance smelling. Watery musky floral with some citrus in the opening. I bet there’s water Lily. After looking at the notes - Yup. A watery musky white floral / water Lily / regular Lily mix with citrus rind bitterness in the background and deprartment store white musk. Little bit of funky musky watery Magnolia. Don’t like. Sell.

I'm a huge Marc Jacobs perfume fan in general, but this one is just okay. It's a nice creamy gardenia scent, when I normally don't like white florals or green perfumes. There's just enough fruitiness in there to keep me interested. Will I buy a bottle when my samples run out? Probably not. But I'll probably keep the samples around to use up.

This was a scrubber for me. It had a harsh cleaning product like odor I hoped would fade in the dry down, but it just kept getting worse. Nauseating. Maybe it just didn't agree with my body chemistry because from the reviews it seems some people did find the fragrance pleasant and not like wearing Simple Green.

As soon as I sprayed and smelled I wanted to wash it off. A big hit of green and gardenia, very confusing. next comes the citrus, cutting the too strong blast I started with. Smells like a shampoo or detergent to me. But the gardenia stays forever. Not a fan.

If you’re looking for a gardenia bomb, this one’s for you. I can’t for the life of me figure out what is supposed to be mod or noir about this. It’s a mature and headachy white floral with zero sex appeal, zero modernity, and it’s gonna be a no for me, dawg.

When I first smelled this I was really delighted to discover such a fresh and citrusy fragrance, but, few hours later I can only smell the tuberose...I feel like I have a huge vase of tuberoses right on my desk. Not really up my alley; wouldn't buy it.

Something about this I really disliked. Kind of nauseating to me. Can't pick out what it is though. The scents don't seem to blend well together, seems off. Ended up being a scrubber for me. Oh well! Happy smelling! :)

Cheap at manufacturing, expensive to buy. This applies to the majority of MJ fragrances. This one is soft, floraly-fresh, weak in longevity, stays close to skin. Big dissapointment.

Mostly musk. Where's the freesia?

Mod Noir by Marc Jacobs is a Sephora exclusive, packaged in Sephora's signature black and white stripes. As a lover of white florals, I was very much looking forward to testing Mod Noir, especially seeing that it's commonly mentioned as a replacement for the now discontinued Marc Jacobs for Women. Sadly I don't find Mod Noir quite as wearable as Marc Jacobs for Women. Gardenia is the main accord in this composition, however, there are additional fruity notes added to aid it in appealing to the masses. Unfortunately Mod Noir does not mesh so well with my chemistry and actually turns quite cheap and synthetic on my skin. It smells more fruity and clean, like a bottle of shampoo rather than creamy and floral like the original Marc Jacobs for Women. If you adore white florals, I feel as if this fragrance won't appeal to you. Mod Noir wears more like a fruity floral on my skin. I can't hide my disappointment and in turn, my feelings have lead to a less than favourable review of Mod Noir. Marc Jacobs, has (in my humble opinion), discontinued any fragrance of theirs that had any merit. I wish I could see the return of Marc Jacobs for Women, Blush, Bang and their extensive 'Splash' collection. The brand doesn't quite feel the same anymore. On a more pleasing note, Mod Noir does have excellent longevity and sillage. It's just a shame that I find the scent hard to tolerate.

I am surprised that so many comparing it to original MJ because it doesn't smell that way at all. Neither does it smell like Hollywood which is sweet fresh gardenia scent. In my opinion bottle doesn't match the scent-bottle is sort of mod and minimalistic but scent is anything but. you know how you see a picture of someone and form an opinion about what type of person that is? and then you meet him/her and you are shocked to find out that they are nothing like what you imagined? that's how I felt about this scent. I imagined something citrusy, cold and clinical. Not sure why. What I got was watery gardenia which was interlayered with coconut notes(or at least what smelled like coconut since there is no such thing in this scent" People to compared it to gardenia scent from Pacifica are definitely close to what it smells like. I am picturing Tahiti, coconut drink and local women with gardenia flowers in their hair. I know MJ has sort of quirky style but I never liked his bottles and this one no different. But I really like the scent

What makes me enthusiastic to try this is the Nose behind it, he created Cabotine, and this is enough attractor to most Parfumistas. Regarding the marketing plan, I think it is successful in the name and bottle design matter, but the only wrong thing here in my modest oppenion is the juice itself. As a lot of us (Fragranticans) know, white florals perfumes were a mark of the early 50's, not Mod 60's, as they were more dirty/earthy/patchouli noted. But if we will think another way, we might imagine this classy,chic lady who spent most of her early youth during the 50's, arrived in the Mod 60's era, and she feels more comfortable wearing somthing familiar to her, and it will be Gardenia and white florals,, despite that she is very trendy in outfit wise, and she is wearing the new TREND of only white and black stuff..... But again, what really grap my attention to test this is only the person who created it, as he done a lot of POWERHOUSES already.

I've been making my way through samples I've accumulated, and left this one close to last. While it is described as pretty much exactly what I avoid, the completionist in me wanted to give it a fair shot. I often get headaches from heavy white florals as well as from musk, but a few spritzes on my wrist is usually safe enough. So yes, Mod Noir opens with loud gardenia and, to me, an even louder milky musk. Either my nose or my skin is particularly sensitive to musk, and I take it the milkiness comes from the Tuberose and Magnolia. While not to my taste, the notes nonetheless blend well and smell cohesive and intentional. With my wrist a few feet from my nose as I worked at my computer, the white florals were faintly detectable for probably ~4 hours. After that, I needed to bring my arm closer to smell them. I didn't get a headache, although I'm confident I would have if i had sprayed in on my clothes, hair, or closer to my nose.

This scent is absolutely perfect, the packaging is spot on and it is the first scent by Marc Jacobs that I have ever been impressed by, let alone thought was worth anything at all. It smells exactly the way I would imagine a Mod-style woman from the 60s would smell - a simple and pretty floral. The packaging fits it perfectly. It is so well blended that it smells like it has just a few notes, but I do NOT find it lack luster. It's gorgeous! This is one of those perfumes that is beautifully combined to create the illusion of just a few notes, rather than a hoard of notes that happen to smell good together. Now I would never wear this, it's not my kind of scent, but it is like a breath of fresh air and for that, I appreciate it. I couldn't call this boring in any way, and it surely will be a treasure for those looking for a simple, beautiful, well blended white floral.
