Gershwin

Opens with a Superb, bright and zesty bitter orange and lemon. It's got a nice peppery kick as well. It's a great way to get away from the "household cleaner product" that lemon often get associated with. The Incense isn't a big part of the opening on me. I barely notice it. But in the mid it's playing a bigger part, and the citruses calms down and opens the way for a woody accord and the incense. The pepper is also still kicking. The drydown has a surprising (to me anyway) amount of citruses left. It's mostly the lemon that contributes to the citrus smell from the mid, for me. On me the incense never overpower any other note, and the woods never quite reach the levels of the citrus, incense, and pepper. I never got the water lily or clove. The water lily i wish i detected, but clove is best when it's barely/not at all noticeable in my experience. A somewhat good comparison to my nose is "Guerlain, Aqua Allegoria Orange Soleia" (that i own at this point and have a lot of experience with), but, more 3D, and with added black pepper and incense. That wonderful Maria Candida Gentile signature herbal signature is there too, that makes all her fragrances distinctly "Maria Candida Gentile" fragrances. In the end, i really love this as a spring/summer/autumn citrus fragrance. The pepper and incense gives it some backbone even for early autumn days. I would wear this as a day fragrance. It's bright, uplifting, and energizing. Perfect for casual wear, work, or even formal events. Personal score: 9/10. I'd happily have this as my only citrus fragrance. It covers all the uses i have for a citrus fragrance, and then some. Strong recommendation to sample.

I'm wearing this right now, sprayed from a tester. I went back to re-test after the first time on paper because it really took my brain and heart and probably guts and wanted to wear it on my skin. I really enjoy it on myself. I see there are many notes but Gershwin basically smells like a revitalising combo of citrus flowers and incense on paper. On my skin the incense takes it all and it's delightful. It smells straight incense but so tamed, soft, rounded and not harsh as for many incense perfumes. I'm not a fan of incense generally speaking. Too churchy and gloomy, almost acrid in many rendition, but Gershwin smells divine and comforting on me. I would buy it just for sniffing purpose, because it doesn't smell like a socialite's perfume, if you know what I mean. Gershwin is intimate, only vaguely religious but surely mystical enough to support a cosy meditation session. Completely unisex, it stays fresh for long time and it almost smells of tenderness. I guess the complimentary notes make this incense less harsh and more wearable. I don't know exactly what kind of inspiration it comes from and what Gershwin had to do with incense, but for me the conjured image is that of a very peaceful sanctuary in the southern countryside surrounded by trees in bloom.

Well, this is another fragrance I really should've got around to reviewing before now, but wearing Gershwin again today is an uplifting experience for sure and worthy of writing about. I will begin by saying that although the overall vibe of the fragrance is very familiar the delivery has more sweetness and life than anything I might make comparisons to like Avignon, Birley, Missiones, full incense, Heeley etc. etc....but from those you can tell it's a crudely frankincense based fragrance. Gershwin is alive with citrus in the opening mainly lemon and grapefruit but sweet not saccharine and anything but bitter, with a hint of peppery woods. The fizzy, translucent resins of mastic, elemi, galabanum and above all Olibanum are perfectly rendered and so bright and happy, such is their effervescence. I'm not sure this smell evokes Porgy and Bess or Rhapsody in Blue for me, but it clearly did for gentile. The drydown is very subtle, supremely clean and not the biggest projector or performer in the world, when compared to the incense comparisons I made above. Some fragrances you allow some concessions because of the way they make you feel, this certainly was an enjoyable experience for me today.

I came across Gershwin in Rome one winter and never forgot it’s magic. I’m so glad I found a bottle for sale on eBay six months later! Gershwin in my opinion is not a perfume but a state of mind - like Erik Satie’s Pièces froides scratching at my soul every fall. If it was up to me, I would of called this ‘Satie’ (I feel Satie is a better suited ambassador than Gershwin). At first blast the frankincense smells like its drenched in freshly squeezed lemon juice, then the pepper comes through. I am grateful for the pepper as it stabilises the frankincense and stops it from becoming too sickly sweet. If you love being transported to another time and find comfort in the occasional internal reverie, then this perfume is for you.

Gershwin is a fresh and citrus fragrance of classic lines playing the typical eau de toilette, with a very natural result, is made with good componenetes, is traditional and very Mediterranean style. The effect of the water lily matifies the floral part very well always in a second plane that is light and clean. The drying I liked a lot with a light background smoke effect and something dry, due to wood and incense, giving a global aspect of solar heat very summer season. Although sin of lack of duration and wake seems to me a good fragrance that is also very well balanced. Rating: 7

oggi che la giornata è calda, e che comincia la primavera, indosso gershwin. l'ho scelto perchè è agrumato, di limone, ma la sensazione esperidata è presto smorzata da un bell'incenso da chiesa, con punte di pepe nero. non il solito profumo agrumato estivo, e neppure l'incenso resinoso e opulento che amo per l'inverno: piuttosto una combinazione semplice, minimale invero, gradevolissima ed originale. il profumo della transizione tra inverno e primavera. ottimo.

an utterly compelling incense with sunshine. it carries the MCG 'fuzzy' incense and maries it with warm woods and a fantastic petitgrain-mandarin-lemon that buttresses the incense for a reasonable amount of time, maybe 4 hours. i slightly prefer this over the sweeter and more complex sideris and is the MCG to wear on a bright spring or summer day when mere cologne will not suffice.

I like, for night evenings, rainy days with a good coffee or a tea with soft music in the background... not bad,a scent that leaves the impression! Nice! Sillage: 6/10 Longevity: 7./10 Scent: 8./10 Overall: 8./10

“Gershwin” is Maria Candida Gentile ́s most citrusy perfume I ́ve sampled so far. It contains a rather unconventional combination of various citruses and incense, which led me to dubbing the perfume “liturgical citrus”. Allegedly, Ms Gentile utilises a large amount of natural ingredients in her perfumes (according to some accounts they ́re 100% natural, which I would definitely take with a pinch of salt). I ́m not sure I ́d be able to tell the difference between a natural molecule and a synthetic one, but “Gershwin” does smell “natural”. The citruses in it are not overdone (there ́s no acidic sourness irritating your nostrils here); on the contrary, they exude a pleasantly zesty aroma, bringing to mind their flesh as well as their rind. After a while, incense arrives on the scene. In my opinion, it is the intriguing citrus-incense combination which prevents the scent from being categorised as yet another citrus-based summer cologne. The combo is improved even more by cloves in the base. Nevertheless, “Gershwin” ́s greatest strength (natural ingredients) is, at the same time, its biggest drawback. On my skin, the fragrance has a weak sillage, not to mention its poor longevity. It basically evaporates almost completely within 2-3 hours. At this price range, I ́d expect much more convincing results in these two departments. That being said, “Gershwin” is a fine scent that every perfumista ought to try out.

Gershwin opens with spicy notes of pepper, a bit of citrus and some incense. The citrus becomes stronger quickly. Then, cloves and woody notes, sycomore, fresh and woody. The citrus now tones down and the woody notes become the main part of the scent. The drydown is a dark woody fir/sycomore, topped with citrus and pepper. Performance is not as good as I'd hoped, sillage is soft to moderate and longevity is weak. What a great combination of the sycomore and the citrus, combined with the spice of the pepper and cloves. The incense disappears quite quickly on me and not sure where the waterlily is. The sycomore is majestic, what a lovely smell. I wish performance was better, then I'd consider a full bottle. I will definitely wear the sample more often.

Mmm well. Initially I have a flare of pepper, limoncello, ginger, bitter orange, on a light, fresh and green thread of incense. I also have a slightly English vibe and peppery memories that bring me back to André Putman's L'original. This is a simple incense with the austere woody note in the masculine but comfortable, familiar, wise. It stays close to the skin, smooth, fluid, rather light (I used twice as many sprays as I normally have). It has a harmonious, enjoyable citrus accord. The finish on my skin is a bit raw and slightly dusty, sweet and moldy while on the clothes where it still remains it shines alive. After all, a safe choice for a daytime,more summer,masculine, sparkling and positive incense.

For me the perfect combination of very fresh and realistic citrus notes with an incense/woody base: a morning walk through Italian lemon groves to the church overlooking the sea. Let's hope Mass doesn't take too long though, as the fragrance is fading fast only half an hour after being applied! Gershwin is also the perfect pick-you-up after an evening shower in summer : the olfactory equivalent of a gin and tonic with a twist of lemon. I'm not sure what any of this has to do with the composer of "Rhapsody in Blue," but Gershwin takes a place of honour - alongside Sideris - as my co-favourite fragrance from Maria Candida.

Maria Candida Gentile Gershwin (2009) - citrus incense - @mariacandidagentile creates a unique take on an italian citrus freshie. Starts with a collage of classic italian citruses: Grapefruit, Lemon, and Bitter orange mixed with black pepper that gives the citrus accord a spicy and slightly sharp feeling. This sharpness is rounded by a floral-spice accord of Lily, black pepper and warm Clove. Then comes the main heart - the citrus accord meshes with Incense smoke that has hints of Sandalwood, Clove and woods. Sits close to skin apart from the top.

Spicy incense citrus fizz. It's like a lemon lime natural sparkling mineral water, with few curcuma, ginger, and black pepper flavors. It has tingly sourness and allot of fizz. The incense in here is quite delightful rather than dark and churchy. I believe this fragrance is fine and good for summer nights! it's not the fresh type cause there are quite doses of black pepper, and incense besides the tingling taste of ginger that all are added to citrus. Quite fine.

Oh, wow! I bought for my husband a decant of "Sideris", since he enjoys mountain tea. The brand was very generous to send him some mini vials. All the fragrances are very elegant, but this is the frag that caught my attention! Slightly green, herbal, like a breeze up in the mountains. Not very sweet, but rather herbaceous and earthy... Actually this was the frag that reminded me mostly of mountain tea. It's rather unisex and somehow nostalgic. Very impressive!

"Gershwin" opened with a simply adorable sugary citrus with loads of zing underneath from the black pepper. As it develops incense becomes more visible giving this a slightly smoky and even woody feeling. It stays very close to the skin and lasts for around 4 hours which is not so bad. "Gershwin" is completely unisex and I would recommend this to anyone who searches for a unique citrus-incense combo.

A dainty peppery-citrus scent with a hint of BO, which unfortunately kinda makes it hard to enjoy fully. The sandalwood is quite potent, and totally up in this mix, but it feels a little overwhelmed by the spicy-pepperiness, although it does become more prominent as the scent progresses... Overall, not too bad, but not enough weird-quirk for me...

Unusual pairing of incense and citrus that I am ultimately undecided about. It is inviting but there is something I can’t quite put my finger on that puts me off, like a kind of staleness or something. The citrus itself (lemon and grapefruit) is extremely refreshing and natural, with lots of tartness and zest. There’s a very faint sweet floral note that seems to tame the incense. But the incense itself makes the whole somewhat sour and I struggle to want to wear it. It doesn’t have much in the way of longevity.

What a disappointment... It reminds me of the candied oranges of which Italian Christmas cakes are full. Not for me

Sometimes I think that the comment here are made by costumers who are embarrassed to admit they have paid about 150 euro for something that is pretty nothing. So they feel better spending great poetic words. But I am a bad person. This bad person knows also there can be fake-writer who promote a fragrance under retribution. This bad person knows also how people feel noble talking nobly about something they consider high class by fame. This bad person has also sniffed thousand of perfume and pure essential oils. This is just pure incense carterii and citruses. Nothing special. A monkey can do better in 5 minutes. It smell like Gershwin only if you leave his body to rot on his piano in a basement. Open like an humid moldy church and became a degreaser spray citruses scented. The dry down is even nice but there is better around. Mrs. Gentile use natural incense but only that, the rest is synthetic like into the rest of the niche. Thank You. Be Awaken.

Nice classic cologne trying to have the old timer, 20s 30s feeling. Citrusy, peppery. A lot of naturals. But weak, during the sunny spring day outside it's gone after 3 hours. Silage is very intimate. It makes you not smell bad for the day, nobody rather than your partner will notice. Price is too much for this performance it should be right under 100€ currently it is 150€.

Incense and lemon beginning, very bright and obvious. Can not say it sounds good - on my skin that mix reminds of bath cleaning stuff. In 10 min incense gets more and more noticeable, pepper gets louder, but still to me it is an incense monster mainly. Will not give you any surprises - same notes just will get silent with time. Boring and controversial, not for me.

An increadibly delightful combo of green fizzy citruses and incense with peppery undertones on top. Sort of a modernized version of Czech & Speake Frankincense and Myrrh with a plethora of citruses enhancing the clean, waxy and lemony quality of the biblical resin. Maybe a tad too minimalistic yet nonetheless enjoyable. Very nice. Rating: 7/10
