Why Not A Cologne

First impression: wow, this cologne has a wonderful opening of Apple and Pineapple that’s just so easy to enjoy it qualifies as one of those rare “Love at first sniff” frags for me. So it’s like Aventus in the sense that it’s very pleasant and has a Pineapple note in there. But it's mostly different and it stands on its own. As you can see in the notes there’s a woodsy base (though I wouldn’t have known about the leather note without reading the description, after which I imagine I can smell it) with a very nice and light touch of florals (Magnolia is one per Buxton, well no wonder I love this since I grew up in the South where those trees are abundant), which I appreciate because the more floral a frag is the less likely I am to find it masculine, generally speaking. Hm...actually the more I smell this, the more easily I can find those florals, but they’re pleasant and don’t make it feel feminine for me. For me it’s Masculine leaning Unisex, but I would guess Mr. Buxton either had men such as himself in mind when he made this or he just made something he thought everyone would enjoy without regard to gender. We’re having our usual early Spring weather here in LA, and it feels perfect for this weather (highs in the 60s and 70s). Even though Apple and Pineapple are sweet notes, I don’t find this TOO sweet like so many modern frags these days. It’s top notes may be very friendly, but it definitely feels like an Adult frag to me. The box it comes in is a bright and attractive blue and the bottle has a nice solid magnetic cap. The bottle is a 50ml (don’t think it comes in 100ml) and puts out small sprays. I almost never blind buy “niche” bottles because I’ve never been a big niche guy, preferring to go the vintage route to get “niche quality” along with my old favorites, but I’m very glad I got this — it’s the nicest smelling cologne I’ve smelled in quite some time, and I have plenty of good ones and have sampled hundreds and hundreds more! I’m almost surprised I bought it because even though I’d heard of Mark Buxton by reputation here and there over the past few years, I’d never tried his work outside of a few of the Commes de Garcon line that I found interesting but not for me — except for that peppery White one I liked so much I almost bought it last year. Don’t remember how I ran across this, but when I did I saw A.Bandini below had given it a good review and I’ve known him long enough to respect his opinion, so seeing it 50% off at Maxaroma was enough to get me to roll the dice. Glad I did! I’m surprised this hasn’t been talked about more, and highly recommend sampling it and keeping an eye out for discounts (it’s back up to $165 at Maxaroma)

Apple, pineapple and light woods is what i get. Dont get any trace of leather or any florals. very simple fresh and juicy, but extremly likeable. Leans masculine.

Fruity citric green at first. I get a good bit of similarity to John Varvatos Artisan Pure in the opening, with an added bit of pineapple. Comparison to a cheap fragrance may make some clutch their pearls but I like the scent profile. As it dries it loses the green part and becomes more about the fruity floral bits. I can see red apple and a bouquet of flowers. Hint of vetiver too although I don’t even think it is listed. Leans synthetic a bit but never to a point of detriment. Fades fast on my skin. 7.7/10
