MOD

I'm still not sure what to make of this fragrance, have worn it 10x since December yet am still of a mixed mind. If it were a person, it's one who catches your eye at a party, someone different who marches to their own drumbeat yet at the same time is oddly familiar.....something about them both bugs you & attracts you. It could lead to passionate obsession, or be hindsight-rationalized as an off-course whoops! The rose element is foremost & powerful, a sultry blood-deep red perfume but then it fades--is it gone? No, for the nutmeg and maybe a juicy green plant (cactus, as a previous poster suggested?) shows up....now it's a battle between rosacious floral, spicy (nutmeg) and an earthy, rooted green...it keeps changing every time I inhale it. I think this is the definition of a complex & evolving relationship...I'm so intrigued by this juice & keep coming back to it without a clear verdict...very interesting. On a side note, I love the packaging & the branding, as I was once a mod (revivalist) back in the 80s, mohair suits & sharp shoes etc...though I think the B&W geometric design is more "Carnaby Street" than Modernist in the true sense...still its odd blend of 60s (tea rose) with an edgy masculine "now" is wonderful. Beautiful yet somewhat androgynous, despite its highly feminine top notes. I like mucho!!

What an unusual scent. When I first smelled this, I thought it had a non-sweet patchouli note but I see patchouli is not listed. Although I do smell the rose, this scent has a distinct icy, dry herbal quality to it. This reminds me of nothing else I own so I do find it rather unique. For that reason alone, I like it very much.

MOD is an oddball fragrance. Released as a limited edition for Winter 2017, it has already hit the Avon clearance catalog and has attracted scarcely any attention as evidenced by the scant reviews here on Fragrantica and lack of mention anywhere else. MOD may not be for everyone, certainly not mainstream buyers. It's too weird for most Avon catalog shoppers. Avon scents are usually on trend if a little cheaply executed at times, yet MOD seems not to follow any trend trajectory. I can't see the people who buy Skin So Soft and Anew face cream being the target market for MOD. At the same time, MOD appears in the Avon "mark." catalog, making it too bourgeois for most niche lovers, the people who could actually appreciate this work of weirdness. The "mark." line is aimed at high school and college-age women, but MOD might be too adventurous for some in that age range (of course, there are all kinds of perfumistas in all age ranges; I am generalizing). By the way, anyone interested in creative perfumery should definitely seek out "mark." fragrances - some of them are fantastic and off the beaten track. The marketing concept and packaging remind me of Marc Jacobs Mod Noir, but the scent is NOTHING like that one (nuclear gardenia). MOD opens with rose that is quickly supplanted by a crisp nutmeg smell. This combination reminds me of paper and fresh ink. But also something green, spicy, and brisk. I have never smelled anything else like this. Persistently fresh, yet not a bit citrusy, aquatic, or fruity. The notes listed here are incomplete, to say the least. I think only the top notes are included in the description on Fragrantica Avon is equally reticent: NOTES • Top Note: swinging medley of rose • Middle Note: capucine florals [nasturtiums] • Bottom Note: spicy nutmeg allure I detect something like the vanillin/lignin smell of old paper in the drydown, so it could be that vanilla is one of the base notes not listed. Someone below compared MOD to Tocade, and I can see that, but it's more like "Tocade Eau Legere" or "Tocade Eau Fraiche," not as strong a vanilla-rose. MOD has grown on me. Either it's gorgeous or hideous, I can't decide. As Julia explained below, it IS like a person who fascinates/repels you at the same time. If you are tired of syrupy fruitchoulis and ubiquitous white florals and want something interesting, try MOD.

I just got this. Tried it out today. It’s ok. Not wonderful. It goes through a few stages. At first spray there is a blast of sweet rose. Then about 5 mins later there is this weird not good accord of nutmeg and nasturtium. I grow nasturtiums every year and I was curious how that note would be expressed in this fragrance. Nasturtiums are edible and I do grow them and use them as a garnish. They taste similar to a radish. Sour and pinchy. The smell is pretty spot on. It’s quite sour and then the nutmeg blasts through... think sour eggnog maybe? Anyway it’s very weird. Not pleasant and someone may wonder if you passed gas. This lasts a few minutes, maybe ten. Then it settled into an old fashioned soapy rose that reminds me of the rose soap from Yardley of London. It’s not as green as tea rose, but it’s not bright like the rose note in philosophy amazing grace. It really does smell much like Yardley soap. This isn’t terrible. But I did pay 30.00 for the fragrance and the lotion and I don’t even think it’s worth paying that. Oh well.

One word LOVE! Why? Because it's very unique. So if you smell it straight out of the bottle on the wrist the first thought is what the heck? But the wafts that cross your nose if you spray it on your body is amazing. So amazing in fact I am going to stock up. It is very fresh, very clean and very different. The bottle is cool looking but pretty cheap. The bottle looks retro to me but I am telling you, this is really good if you spray it and walk through it. The residual wafts of smell that come your way are fresh, clean and feminine!
