⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1⁄2 / 5 — A Fresh Citrus Gem With Surprising Depth After spending yesterday afternoon sampling most of the Matière Première lineup with a friend, I walked out of the store with Cologne Cédrat, and honestly, this one feels like a slept-on beauty. The opening hits with a creamy, juicy bergamot that feels both bright and soft around the edges like sunlight diffused through frosted glass. Among the ocean of “freshies” on the market, this stands out as a hidden gem. As it begins to settle, that brightness is joined by a subtle, airy spice, giving the citrus a gentle warmth without ever dulling its sparkle. The drydown is where things got really interesting for me: a mate-infused, bitter-tea facet comes forward, still wrapped in that velvety bergamot creaminess. It’s clean, fresh, but in a way that feels elevated, not your typical blue, aquatic, or laundry-clean direction. This is a different take on freshness, more nuanced and almost meditative. Yesterday I also sniffed MFK Gentle Fluidity, picked up Speed Legends by Ex Nihilo, own several LV freshies, plus the green-grass brightness of Guerlain’s Vetiver Fuave and a handful of other citrus-forward scents. Compared to all of these, Cologne Cédrat feels distinct, quietly confident, effortlessly wearable, and surprisingly memorable. But the biggest shocker? Longevity. I applied it 10 hours ago, and it’s still present on my skin. For a citrus-driven fragrance, that’s almost unheard of. In short: big W. If you love clean, fresh scents and want something familiar yet refined and unexpected, Cologne Cédrat is absolutely worth getting your nose on.

This smells really good, one of the best citrus based fragrances I've tried. The issue is performance unfortunately. Edit: after second full wearing, it's not as bad as I thought as far as longevity, I'm getting around 4-5 hours which is maybe average for a freshie, really good projection the first hour before it tones down to scent bubble for 2 hours and finally to skin scent the last hour or so. If the price point was closer to Dior homme cologne I would rate this a love, but as it stands it's around a like for me. 2nd edit: I came real close to getting this fragrance but atlas the projection is almost nonexistent. I say that as a more introverted type that doesnt like to blast people with my fragrance but this is extremely low on projection that I can barely even smell it on myself. If I can't enjoy it what's the point? Literally skin scent in 30 mins, but that skin scent lasts like 7 hours. Too bad I can't get my own whiffs of it. Shame.

Having tried a few Matiere Premiere fragrances, I get what the Perfumer is trying to do (i.e. one main note with an overdoes of it so it stays liner to the end), and I quite like the idea. They are not creating new formulas or new smelling scents (you will have smelled something similar earlier), but rather working with established smells and making them in a really high quality. If you are new to perfumes, this brand is an interesting one to start out with; if you are heavily into fragrances already, this again is an interesting brand to look into because you will certainly recognise the quality. None of their fragrances are sharp, everything is linear and rounded and smartly put together. Nice work. Cologne Cedrat is beautifully done. A perfect Cologne (in an EDP format) ! Fresh and citrusy without being bitter or sharp. The maté lingers for a very long time in the dry-down and gives the opening note a sort of continuity.

Incredible how many reviews ignore the perfumer's vision. The whole point of Mr.Guichard's line is the upmost beautiful representation of prime materials, hence the house's name. So if you are here expecting something revolutionary then you're in the wrong place. Frankly I've tried all but 2 from his line and they are the epitome of art done by a master artist. This is a beautiful crisp clear citrus fragrance. Almost like when you squeeze a lemon and the oils pop up to your nose, no harshness. The dry down is made soft by that mate base which imo prevents that pledge cleaner dry down so many citrus frags have. Also bypasses the intense heavy white florals normally used in citrus frags. Longevity is fantastic for a citrus frag. 6-7 hours of noticeable foot projection. If you like Cactus Garden by LV, Bergamot 22 etc. Give this one a try it will blow them out of the water. Matiere Premiere is fascinatingly house with lot of quality to deliver. The direction is “idealistic”, gravitating around one ingredient, but not simplistic (as it happens to other houses in the minimalistic niche approach). This is due to the outstanding quality of the raw materials, i.e., the closed-loop, vertically integrated production of the oils. Enough to set this apart from, clueless magma of makeshift niche brands mushroomed over the years. Cedrat Cologne is a superior take on masculine classics in the vein of Pour Monsieur by Chanel, Eau de Rochas Pour Homme, etc; but with more quality than most of the designers’ fragrances. The lack of complete originality is well balanced by the quality it oozes, making it a worthy addition to anyone’s fragrances library. Timeless!

I didn't expect to be this scent so good 😳👀 The Perfume Guy on YT said that this perfume was boring and nothing special... Indeed there are not much facets, the scent is linear rather, but what a scent it is! Quality over quantity. The scent reminds me my grandpa, who was a very elegant gentleman. And he smelled similarly after shaving. Kind of reminds me of some masculine Penhaligons' scents from their Portraits collection as well. I think it is very well done, and I think this is rather for classic gentlemen. Or ladies, like me. It is not old-fashioned, it is mature. Whoever wears this, represents class and high social status. Excellent, excellent! One of the best lemons I have ever smelled 👍👌

From my opinion, this scent is super duper unique. How millionaires smell. I bought it straight away from David Jones, Brisbane after a recommendation from my patient. I was lucky because they still had 1 stock left of 100ML in their store. I fell in love with the bergamot-based scent (citrusy, zesty, fresh..... you just name it). Long-lasting. Over 5 hours on my clothes. All occasions are friendly. Really worth of money. I will look for the next bottle after I run out of this one. As far as we know in Aromatherapy studies, Bergamot oil have a power to attract money and wealthiness. In addition, they also have the power to give prosperity and happiness. Give it to go!

Just sampled: the piercing and photorealistic opening citrus note is terrific and lasts a long time for a citrus. Compared it to my Bergamot essential oil and felt it smelled almost but not quite the same. Checked the brand's website which says it's primarily Citron but also has Bergamot. Looked up the definition of "Cedrat" -- it means Citron, who knew? I like the light spicy notes which become more apparent after the opening citrus notes die down. Initial impression: very good 4/5 overall. I'd like to try wearing this on a nice sunny day...

An elegant and refreshing bergamot fragrance. I respectfully disagree with the reviewer below me on performance. If you have tried MP frags you will know they all have, at minimum, moderate projection and longevity. The Mate and musky base to this help make the fragrance robust, not like most citrus frags like Perris Monte Carlo or AdP. If you like frags such as Bergamote 22 by le labo I highly recommend this one.

I love this - I spray it on my partner mostly but also like to wear it myself. It's a gorgeous unisex frag that leans slightly more masculine. I can really smell the citrus rind and love fresh brightness of it. I have also enjoyed layering it with MP Neroli Oranger. Crushing hard on all the smells from the Matiere Premiere house. Can't wait to add a full bottle to my collection.

I smelled this in a perfumery, brought the paper stripe home and was smelling it from time to time. I'm seriously debating buying the real thing... It has a good longevity for a citrus frag. Edit: I bought a bottle and I'm satisfied because the price is good and the lemon smell is very natural. It's a great yet simple fragrance good for layering with something else.

This reminds me of being in a spa- it smells like citrus, smoky tea and soap. It lasts for ages and gets more soapy towards the drydown, but not in a sharp aldehydic way. It does lean slightly masculine but I am female and I feel fine wearing it. This is not really like anything else I have (exit the king etc) so I am buying a bottle. It will be great for summer.

First impressions: It's beautiful, classy, intruiguing... The bergamot is very realistic. it goes into the fresh green and herbaceaus territories. In no way it's similar to Neroli Oranger. A fantastic scent for spring, summer and maybe early fall I think. You can smell quality!

Beautiful fragrance. I was gifted a small travel version and wasn’t expecting much. But once I started using it, I fell in love! Living in Dubai I have to always be careful with choosing a “heat friendly” perfume. And this one is absolutely perfect for +50°C!

I love this one, really fresh, spicy and citrusy, really long lasting. The dry down is where it goes to a herbal quite smoky smell while remaining fresh from the citrus. I love Maté in a fragrance. Glad to own this one.

Beautiful scent well blended but save yourself the money and get Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria instead. 80-90% similar at a fraction of the cost.

Cologne Cedrat is one of those familiar DNAs that you feel like you know even before you smell it. It is very similar to the (much cheaper) Cedrat Boise by Mancera and Quintin Bisch's superb Bois Imperial by Essential Parfum. I would say Cologne Cedrat is Aurelien Guichard in quite restrained, measured form clearly sticking to the brief and not trying to pull up any trees. This isn't as interesting or "special" as Falcon Leather, Crystal Saffron or Vanilla Powder for example but that isn't what they were going for. The brief here was for a very refined, universally wearable, absolutely unisex daily wearer with a bergamot top with the classic Italian style barbershop vibe we all love. It is crisp and very fresh in the opening without being aggressive. The heart is a slightly muted tea note without any bitterness and some pink pepper that works characteristically well with the fresh and citrus top notes. The base is mate for more of that tea flavour and it is interesting that this is strong enough not to need the usual sandalwood base to anchor everything in place. It starts masculine-leaning and becomes very unisex indeed after about ten minutes. The tea is utterly androgynous here. Performance is similar to Cedrat Boise (I get around six to seven hours off this) but it is a nicer and more refined skin scent than the Mancera the longer it goes on. It isn't as powerful as Bois Imperial as it doesn't have the wood and vetiver base that Bois Imperial has. As others have noted in their reviews, given the accords in Cologne Cedrat, its performance is impressive indeed: you pretty much never see freshies as light as this go for this long and it is clear the mate here is doing some serious heavy lifting to facilitate this. Cologne Cedrat is one of the few in their lineup that hasn't been given an Extrait black bottle treatment and you can sort of see why. Its beauty is in its crispness and simplicity, and going heavier on the bergamot or mate concentrations I am not sure would contribute much here beyond what it already is. For me, the tea note and the lightness of it is what makes it special. I own a sample and have rinsed through that in two weeks, so I will be buying a full bottle soon. It is also a great fragrance choice for a flight I can say as it sticks around the tea is quite calming and linear, it doesnt change on your skin. I think that whilst this is isn't interesting or "special" as Falcon Leather, Crystal Saffron or Vanilla Powder, it is something you'd wear much more often than anything else from the house. As refined daily drivers, absolutely superlative office fragrances, smells with absolutely universal crowd pleasing, all season appeal that **everyone** likes go, this is about as good as it gets I think. It has all this and genuine performance to boot. Three Word Summary: Solid Daily Everything Scent - 7/10 Sillage - 7/10 Drydown - 7/10 Bottle/packaging - 8/10 Performance - 8/10 37/50

Cologne Cédrat seems to be a misnomer. It is an EDP for a start, and the《 cédrat 》of its title refers to the citron - a shrivelled breed of lemon with a thick rind. However, bergamot is the key citrus note here. In a nutshell, CC is a masculine-leaning, bergamot-heavy tea scent, designed for summer days. While it is simple and nothing unusual, CC is classic in style and beautifully formed. As with all Matière Première scents, CC is minimal and linear, albeit made with high-quality ingredients. CC opens with a tart bergamot note - perfectly brisk and refreshing instead of being bitter. There is some fleeting lemon at the opening, but bergamot is dominant. It is lifted by a soft spicy note that is gently peppery, giving it a little warmth and depth. A beautiful tea note creeps in as it develops, giving an earthy, herbal greenness, and forming a refreshing Earl Grey accord alongside the bergamot. Something akin to dry vetiver is detectable as it dries down, and it becomes a softly woody, cleanly musky skin scent after a time. CC is well-blended, and performs better than expected - sillage and longevity are both moderate. I cannot fault the lasting power of Matière Première scents in general. A nicely-composed masculine-leaning cologne, CC is decent but far from groundbreaking. Not the most exciting from this line, but decent for what it is. 3/5.

The fragrance is really good, very fresh and pleasant for warmer days. I know it's supposed to be unisex but reminds me of typical fresh cologne for men like Givenchy Pour Homme. The only problem for me is the performance which is horrible. Was very disappointed since other people are saying the performance is solid. I'm getting pretty much zero projection, immediately turns into a skin fragrance. I'm not sure if it's just my skin or maybe I got a bad bottle, unfortunately only tested on a paper strip before buying. I kinda recommend it based on the smell but considering the price, make sure to test on your skin before buying. In my case this will be unfortunately another expensive gym fragrance or maybe something I can use when it's really hot outside.

Absolutely gorgeous especially if you are a freshie lover. This is perfectly unisex - the pepper notes add enough zing for interest, but not too much spice to draw it into masculine territory. This is clean and intentional. Minimal notes but maximal punch. Freshness of bergamot, a peppery zing, and tied together with a hint of tea from the mate without being a tea scented perfume. Downside for me was the longevity which absolutely pales in comparison to the other Matiere fragrances I’ve sampled (Santal Austral, Radical Rose, French Flower). As much as I loved the fragrance, I don’t believe the value for money is quite there.

I smelled this and it was immediately familiar. Guerlain Bergamotto Di Calabria and to a lesser extent, ADP Cedro Di Taomarina, both of which I have. It also reminds me of another one, which is kind of obscure fragrance, Mediterraneo by the Italian house Carthusia. I'd say mostly like Carthusia but fresher with less mate, and overall better. I love citrus freshies and this one is no exception; very well executed. Would I spring for a full bottle? Nah. You can get all the fragrances I just mentioned for much less, and the quality is the same. But nevertheless, this one smells great. Scent 8/10

This opens with a bright burst of crisp, tangy, greenish citrus—almost like a combination of woody lime and citronella. Then it dries down into dry citrus and mulchy wood. It’s a well-blended marriage of opposites; fresh, crisp, and slightly soapy, yet also dry and somewhat smoky. Each note seems to bring its own type of woodiness to the table: the rind of the zesty bergamot, the mulch of the tangy maté, and the woody spice of the pepper. Like drinking steaming mugs of maté around an antique, outdoor woodstove, with the citronella lanterns lit to keep the mosquitos at bay.

Nice tart citrus top, citron according to the official note breakdown (would have fooled me though) that enters a peppery musty woody dry down. I don't get picture perfect tea by any means more of a dry woody herbal suggestion at the base, a touch of vetiver peaking out from the matte accord in the base. This is my third sample from this house (the 6ml mini bottle). While I appreciate the high quality raw materials, I just don't see enough creativity here. For 130ish euro it might have been an ok deal.

A gorge freshie, rather citron than bergamot, on the first encounter with it, you get a fizzy opening and the pleasantly smoky drydown. I wouldn’t say I opt for MP generally so I took home only the mini me edition [6ml]. Have no regrets of not going FB. Hit and misses: • if you get used to the DNA which is quite quickly, does come across linear. • performance is below moderate (a cologne posing as edp) • a quiet scent for the pricepoint and just nothing to get excited about.

This is a quite safe, slightly bitter-earthy citrus-tea scent. Very soft and pleasant. The black and pink pepper is present, but toned down. The pepper in combination with the mate works very well, which definitely gives it an earthy-green feeling, and softens everything. I'm not really blown away with this. It's really nice, but it's also too plain. It's simple in a slightly boring way.

beware fam, i believe fragrantica's (this perfume reminds me of..) is not that it smells like or similar to a fragrance, it is just a thing that reminds people of other fragrances, it could be a completely different fragrance, it could be just a note or an accord that takes a memory to another fragrance. So do not rely on that please.

Really nice, pretty close to the skin scent. Lemon and peppery notes float in the air with a little of greenness and a light, clean flowery-like touch. It lasts more than the average freshie so it gets the job done. I really do appreciate the scent, still I'm not fully convinced about the quality/price ratio.

Fresh & natural, a bergamote tea scent. Very nice for spring and summer. More for man to my opinion but a woman can wear it without problem. It is very different of neroli oranger of the same brand. Neroli = more clean baby/kid and cedrat = more for a fresh man during hot days. 7/10

This is a very nice, crisp scent. Although it leans slightly masculine, it can still be considered unisex. For a fresh scent, it is surprisingly long lasting. It has decent sillage in the opening hours and then settles in more as a skin scent a few hours on.

No-one else gets cardamon at the start? I like the fresh, spicy, opening but it simply doesn't last. There's the first hit that's pretty interesting but it just stops before it can develop into anything else - disappointed

I like this quite a lot. It is a super long lasting citrus, not harsh, the type of citrus oil you smell when get the fruit directly from the tree and scratches the surface... it is south Italy in spring/early summer...

This is so beautiful! To me, it’s unisex leaning a little traditional masculine, but in a way that if a woman wore it she would feel powerful and in charge. It’s a sophisticated, confident, crisp woody scent.

Nice green bouquet blend, though I cannot identify fresh or roasted mate in this one. More I would smell grassy and hay notes...green and warm, comforting.

If you like Le Labo's Cedrat 37 city exclusive, this is a great alternative at a third of the price. While not identical, it's close enough for the cost!

Until now this was the one perfume from this brand I haven't tried - I have to say it's definitely one of the best ones, so elegant and fresh.

Testing this blind, not know the fragrance or brand, the opening was fresh bergamot, maybe a bit of lime, with a moderate amount of spice. Goes on with moderate projection but within a hour, reduces down to a skin scent. Has a general fresh cologne vibe with spice, which is fine, just doesn't have a lot of individual character. It's more of a clean and classic fragrance to me. Looking at the name and notes, no surprises. I imagine if you want to play it safe and looking for a fresh and spicy classic scent, you really can't go wrong with this. If you are looking for that something a little off and unique, that may be elsewhere. Edit 10/12/23, a year later I feel about the same. Nice, leaning masculine fresh and spicy, but conservative projection. Fresh, mature, and refined over edgy and driven.

Overall a nice fragrance. I get more lemon than bergamot in the beginning, which is the best part. But to be honest the dry down is pretty generic. I often forgot what I wore when I would smell it in my skin 6 hours later. Regarding longevity, I got 1 hour of projection and 5 hours of a skin scent. I think a lot of these early reviewers that talk about great longevity got a free bottle and just repeated the included copy. Do I like it? Yes. Is it unique? No. If I found a 100ml bottle for $60 I would pick it up. Otherwise, like most offerings from the house, not full bottle worthy at full price.

Agree with others, Guerlain L'Eau Boisee does spring to mind alhough the bergamot note here is more toward the bitter rind and is more photrealistic, as is the pepper addition. The mate note is noticeable but doesn't have as much substance as something like Annick Goutal Duel, which is about the best mate fragrance I've tried. This is nice but it's not worth the cost of this line for what is a fairly basic spicy bergamot imho.

A unique citrus scent indeed. The mate grounds the scent and keeps it from turning lemon cleaner or screechy on skin. I really love it but I wouldn't say its top 3 from the brand so far. If it were cheaper I'd definitely consider a full bottle but for the price knowing this scent profile doesn't last as long I'll enjoy the sample, and keep on the hunt fo rmy full bottle worthy springy/citrusy scent. A subtle and fresh scent. So far I am smelling mainly the bergamot, but since it's one of my favorites nothing to complain. Other notes support bergamot well and I like it that it's quite easy to detect almost like wearing bergamot essential oil. I think this scent is truly unisex and would be easy to wear any occasion except I would not wear it at night because it's quite energizing.

That’s a tea, which is not my cup of tea. In the beginning I thought it was just a generic cologne, but soon after the tea part completely took over. It’s not mate, but it’s definitely tea. A very elegant, mature, spicy tea profile. It’s a modern profile, but still too mature for me. I picture this on a 40 / 50 something years old, calm, gentle, but effortlessly elegant person.

Does nobody else get lemon pledge wood cleaner in the opening from this? It’s also pretty weak & I can barley smell it after a couple hours. After that harsh pledge opening it’s pretty nice, but by then it’s so fleeting you can barley smell anything unfortunately.

I get a similiarity to Guerlain Homme boisee, altough there isn't any vetiver/wood note in this perfume. The matte gives it an earthy/vetiverlike smell in my opinion that's why i get the similarity to Homme boisee.
