Metal Lavender

I absolutely love this fragrance. It’s not your typical barbershop-style lavender scent at all. On my skin, it smells like a clean, fresh lavender blended beautifully with cashmeran and musk. I honestly don’t really understand the “Metal” aspect people mention because I don’t get strong metallic notes from it. To me, this feels more like a Spring, Summer, and maybe early Fall fragrance. If you’re someone who enjoys lavender-based scents, you’ll probably love this one. But if you’re not really into lavender fragrances, this probably won’t change your mind. I highly recommend getting a sample first, or even the 6ml travel size for $50 from the official Matiere Premiere website. The performance is also very solid and lasts a long time on my skin. I can honestly see Aurélien Guichard making an Extrait version of Metal Lavender sometime down the line. Alongside Metal Lavender, I also purchased the Tubéreuse Grasse candle, and it smells incredible. It definitely reminds me of French Flower, which I’m extremely happy about. At this point, I’ll most likely end up buying all of the new candles he releases on the website. Overall, I really enjoy this fragrance and can definitely see myself buying a 50ml bottle in the future. The performance is solid, especially if you sweat a lot because the musk projects even more off the skin. The scent profile itself is amazing — very clean, fresh, and airy with a smooth lavender presence. Honestly, it reminds me of walking into an expensive luxury hotel. Matiere Premiere never seems to disappoint me. 10/10.

I think people interpreting “metal” as metallic is a misstep, and if that’s your sticking point, I take the “metal” to mean clean. It’s really just super lavender forward, and quite linear, which is fine. If you love lavender, you’ll love this. Obviously perfume that smells like lavender isn’t groundbreaking, but as someone who enjoys that scent, I’m getting a full bottle. The singularity of the note reminds me of how Escentric Molecules produces their Molecule line. Which again, is great if you want one particular note. Projection is moderate, longevity is about the same, and about what I expect from this house’s EDP line. If you own anything else from MP, you’ll have a good idea of how this performs. Projection: 7/10 Longevity: 7/10 Scent: 8/10 Full bottle: Yes. If you’re a fan of clean lavender, it’s an easy summer reach.

I bought this because I love the brand Matiere Premier and of course because I live near Grasse. I support most French brands and make sure they are fairly judged. I have Radical Rose (my first purchase from MP), then Crystal Saffron, then my fav in summer, Neroli Oranger. I tried a sample of Metal Lavender thinking I would not it because I don’t normally associate perfume with lavender. Not for me anyway. I fell in love and there is something I cannot explain - not lavender not musk but whatever it is it stays on my wrist for hours, mesmerising me, taking me back to find memories... lavender fields? I rally can’t explain it. I accept some people don’t like this but as someone here mentioned, perfume is so subjective. One man’s rose is another one’s thorn. I’d say, try it on for a day and decide for yourself.

Omg yall really hate this one??? I think this is sexy. Woody,lavender and musk (that thank god does not smell like persil) and ALOT of Ambroxan. The sillage and longevity is great (well, i mean, thats what i would expect when im paying half a kidney for a perfume) Pretty unisex even tho i think this can lean slightly masculine, im new to metallic fragrances,the only one that i know is BCR540 and i think metallic is one of my new favourite accords. Would i buy it? Maybe,after running it trough multiple wear tests.

i cannot agree with the people who say this is horrendous. it’s a beautiful metallic- powdery floral, the lavender note is not strong but it is definitely there in the background. it dries down beautiful! i cannot keep my nose away from my hand when i have this sprayed on my wrist! i bought this purely out of curiosity and love at first sniff, i haven’t looked up the reviews online before purchasing and i am happy i didn’t. this has easily became one of my favourite scents in my library

Absolute love for me. It’s so clean smelling and very long lasting on my skin. The longevity is quite impressive. Had compliments from work colleagues who asked me where did I buy it. Very nice subtle lavender and not an old fashioned lavender scent. It’s a modern take on it with musk and a slight metallic vibe that sticks around all day. Had to buy the 100ml and had a 6ml free bottle along with a tester set of other Matiere Premiere fragrances.

It opens with a realistic natural lavender scent that immediately brings in the energy of calm, then you start detecting those musky/cold/dry metal-like notes that compliment the lavender in such a unique way. After several hours you’ll still smell it. After a day, on your clothes, you’ll smell a base that’s quite similar to vanilla powder but without the vanilla, and it’s just so beautiful 🤍

In my opinion, it's certainly not a complex fragrance, but I find it interesting enough to have a place in my collection as a spring/summer scent. It opens with a fresh, metallic lavender that softens over time, and finishes with a very pleasant, creamy, musky base. Good longevity, at least on my skin. In the same vein as Crystal Saffron, but a little more approachable and subtle.

Opening is like a lavender cologne. Very sharp of lavender. Then after 15 min. it changes to soft, creamy-clean, musky fragrance with a hint of lavender under all other molecules. No loud lavender is there anymore. I like it. Longevity is very good but I can not get it after a few hours. People around me do. I actually don’t agree with the bad comments. Thats a nice one

I’m convinced people hating on this fragrance just do not like lavender. I’m a lavender lover and this is beautiful. I can’t stop sniffing it. It’s a calming musky lavender. I’m considering a fb.

Newest trial. I was gifted a sample and was very curious about it, as normally I don’t really like a lavender profile. Metal Lavender surprised me because I expected something colder and sharper from the name, but on my skin it feels more like a clean, modern lavender with a metallic edge rather than a truly metal perfume. The opening is very aromatic, almost electric- lavender, something fresh, slightly bitter and very clean. Not old-fashioned barbershop lavender, not herbal tea. After a while it becomes much more comfortable. For me this is not a dramatic perfume, and maybe not the most emotional one from the brand, but it is very wearable. A good choice if you like lavender but want it modern and abstract. Longevity is good, projection is moderate. More intimate than loud.

Metal Lavender by Matiere Premiere is exactly my kind of fragrance. It opens with a sharp, metallic lavender that's unlike anything else I've tried, and as it dries down, that metallic edge softens into a clean, musky lavender that's incredibly comforting. The lavender is what makes this one for me. It's one of my favourite notes, and it's especially nostalgic because my mum always had lavender oils and other lavender-scented products around the house when I was growing up. Performance is excellent too, with 8+ hours on my skin. Sillage is moderate, but it leaves really nice scent trails. If you love lavender, it's definitely worth checking out. Overall, it's an 8/10 from me.

Either detergent brands are getting exceptionally good at fragrancing product or perfumers are leaning more toward atmospheric blends. The opening of this one gives fancy laundry detergent, but give it a few minutes to develop. The lavender mellows and a soft powdery musk comes forward. It is met by a cozy and slightly woody cashmere wool. This is a slightly feminine leaning unisex fragrance that is very interesting. This is a nice spin on traditional lavender fragrances.

Didn’t expect to like it, but I do. Lavender is very subtle, but it is there. This is a cleanness perfume, better than Another 13. That one is screechy, very chemical. Acne Studios is too sweet. So in between is Metal Lavender. Matier Premier needed a fragrance like this, and so did I.

Just got it. I enjoy it. i am a not big fan of Lavender in perfumes but this is very good. Very metalic powdery scent. Great for hot days. Reminds Me Vanilla Powder but without vanilla. I think it will be my second favourite from MP

Soapy lavender. Kind of like a modern fougere. A bit boring. Thought it would be more of a powerhouse like Beau de Jour. it’s ok. 6.8/10

I had imagined a cold, icy lavender and various aromatics, but I couldn’t find this perfume the way I wanted. At first I smelled an emptiness, then a truly cold and metallic lavender that reflects its name very well came, along with a clean sheet smell, and just as I was thinking it’s not bad at all, it turned into something I struggle to describe, slightly sweetish, woody and unsettling... I said to myself about the overall composition, it’s no different from the simple lavender colognes sold at markets for hygiene... if there’s something special in this scent, I couldn’t find it. Freshly cut, green lavender on first spray that fades after 10-15 minutes. What remains is a musky, ambroxan that feels redundant in the current landscape of perfumery. There are some "metallic" notes but they barely come through. I don't hate this fragrance but I don't love it either. Disappointing considering how excited I was for this release. I ordered the 6ml sample and will live with it for a week or two but to me, this is not a true lavender fragrance and you should save your money.

It opened with the promised notes of sharp cold steel and astringent lavender. Oh no, I thought, I'm going to have to save for a bottle of this to wear on hot muggy days. Except after an hour the lavender and metal are gone and it's just a clean musk/ambroxan bomb like so many common skin scents. Which is not to say unpleasant, but nothing I can't get from the Dua leau papier dupe and a drop of English Lavender essential oil. Metal Lavender is only special for the first half hour.

In the first 10 mins you get a photorealistic lavender smell, fresh, herbal, relaxing. But it quickly disappears and a smooth, powdery musky base remains, that reminds me of Jusbox Cheeky Smile or any other musky powdery fragrances. I also agree with the below comments, it’s like vanilla powder without vanilla. Not bad, but nothing groundbreaking. I love other scent more from the brand. Longevity: 7/10 Sillage: 4/10

To me, this smells like straight-up lavender essential oil with that recognizable Matière Première DNA in the background. It leans slightly masculine and has moderate projection. It’s not a complete “no” for me, but it’s also not a fragrance I’d spend my money on. I did wonder if it could work as a layering scent, but honestly, I’m not even sure it would be worth it. It just didn’t give me enough to want a bottle.

I think this pefume is a mix of Crystal Saffron and Vanilla Powder, but lighter. Crispy, soapy, not too strong.

Slightly Smokey lavender essential oil, that’s basically it.

As seen in "Dumbplings"'s review below, there is an ongoing misinformation spread like a plague in the perfume community which basically assumes Ambroxan smelling like different than it actually is. What is described in that review is exactly what woody amber group of molecules are, such as Amber Xtreme, Ambrocenide and many more - but almost always the descriptions remain constant and common. Ambroxan on the other hand, does smell mild, long lasting, not abrasive or harsh, but quite pleasant, even at extreme doses. Even if you don't have the chance to smell them pure, you could run basic logic...Imagination's formula is approx. 20% Ambrox, no one describes it like this one in terms of ambery harshness. Hell, Molecule 02 formula is only Ambrox, and that is exactly how it smells - the scent you get in the air from Molecule 02 (not Escentric 02) is how mild and hard to smell Ambrox is. Megamare, Oud for Greatness, Erba Pura, most of Crivelli, and many many more modern perfuemes are reeking of woody ambers, not Ambroxan. There is no such thing as chemical Ambroxan mess, what gives that sensation is woody ambers. Ambroxan might be in the same formula, but it will always be woody ambers that will ruin your nostrils and throat. This is not a personal/subjective thing either, this is just a fact. If anything, the # of people who could pick out Ambroxan in a formula is very small. On the other hand, almost everyone can pick/perceive woody ambers. But yes Ambroxan lasts ages, but mild, but lasts, but mild, pleasant, but lasts... Anyway, besides the misguided blame on Ambroxan, I agree with that referenced review. This is really not a good perfume at all. A short-lived lavandin, camphoreous almost, quickly turning into Cashmeran and that horrible woody ambers namely Ambrocenide and AmberXtreme here. Have no idea why this was the fragrance of choice for the new release.

For me, Metal Lavender is the worst thing that has happened to lavender since the release of DGVIB3 by Dolce & Gabbana. An ambrocenide bomb... The Matière Première brand once again proves its love for ambrocenide components, while building its marketing around stories of some kind of raw materials supposedly sourced from their own fields. Remember the previous ambrocenide bomb, Vanilla Powder? Well, the perfumer basically took it again, just swapped the vanilla for a drop of lavender, while leaving the entire ambrocenide base unchanged. The fragrance opens with a faint scent of molecular lavender diluted in alcohol at a 1:10 ratio. You won’t get that rich essential-oil lavender stream that greets you in Jersey by Chanel, Pour Un Homme de Caron, Jicky by Guerlain, or Rimbaud by Céline. Instead, you get the smell of alcohol with a hint of lavender. After about 15 minutes, the lavender is essentially gone, and the remaining 98% of the composition is taken up by pure ambrocenide. Here, it specifically smells to me like dust on an old electric bulb - the scent of electrically charged dust settled on a glass surface. There is also a metallic note, especially in the top-to-mid stages thanks to metallic aldehydes, but they dissipate as well, exposing the ambrocenide-heavy base. The base smells predominantly like wet dog fur to me. You may encounter this kind of base in aggressive “fresh” masculine fragrances overloaded with aquatic notes - it’s an overdose of cashmeran. Imagine a synthetic sweater that throws off sparks at the slightest friction - that’s roughly the sensation of this smell. As lifeless as fiberglass. The base doesn’t wash off and lasts forever. What goes on in the minds and noses of perfumers when they use chemicals like this is a mystery to me. Run a mile from it!

In my last review for this brand I said that Guichard never misses and he is him. Oh the shame... I actually like ambroxan. A lot. As I say in every review my skin does not project and I’m willing to deal with some screechiness if the damn perfume actually lasts. This sucks. I’m sorry. It’s now the only fragrance I don’t like from this brand. Damn. Even with french flower and crystal saffron, huge bombs of ambroxan, there is still a good scent in the inner layer, ambroxan is the last thing you smell. Ambroxan is the ONLY thing I smell, whiff of some lavender but the musk and cashmere are already in that “clean” category and it’s just so much worse. Highly agree with the comment who referred to this as a chemical spill!! A massive shame. Just a screechy, sad mess. Lavender unlike tuberose and saffron is NOT strong enough to deal with this absolute vat of chemicals and this is a huge problem. Aurelien is a good perfumer, burberry hero and eros were masterpieces...however this is an ambroxan chemical mess designed to target the synthetic molecule fragrance market alongside fragrances like Jusbox cheeky smile, Another 13 and the Molecule fragrances. You've probably smelled this before, it's not metallic and it's not lavender it's overpowering ambroxan which you can use for layering but be warned you've never tried it as strong and beast mode as this scent here. This is strong, I don't like the burnt smell ambroxan gives to my nostrils like a chemical / electrical fire however I see what this fragrance was trying to do i'm confused why the marketing went towards "metallic lavender" which it doesn't smell like either of those I wouldn't even be half as mad if they just called this Java vetiver oil in a bottle because it's closer to that than it is to lavender.

Woooster, I completely agree with you. I already felt this with Crystal Saffron as well - it basically got the ambrocenide base of Vanilla Powder therefore the dry down felt the same for me. Same with this scent. Matiere Premiere is really hyped right now, mainly because they say 'they work with pure raw materials', but unfortunately I have the same opinion.... (I only like Parisian Musc which in my opinion really stands out from the lineup)

I just tested it on my skin for several hours while walking around Paris. It starts off pleasantly, with fresh, mineral lavender. But that aspect vanishes very quickly, giving way to a powdery amber-wood note—the kind found in "vanilla leather" scents (which I hate), though obviously much more subdued. I can't wait to get home and take a shower!

Opens with a cold, herbal blend of lavender, like the smell of fresh lavender flowers in late spring. After 10 mins, it turns absolutely synthetic and screechy. It’s the ambroxan/cashmeran blend from MP that smells really harsh and musky. Tried to wash it off twice and it’s still so potent on my skin! Nuclear to the point of chemical warfare.

Tried this today at my local Skins. Opens with a beautiful waft of lavender and then quickly turns to a cold metallic musk ambroxan on my skin. So mostly metal, very little lavender. A pass for me. I wish I could get the smell off my arm...

I agree with Nekosign. It starts off with a fresh, mineral-like lavender. Very quickly, though, you're left with an amber-wood note. It smells like the cheap Givaudan aromachemicals you can find everywhere.

Waist of money. Barely any fragrance. Some lavender in the beginning. After few minutes lavender is gone. You are left with some Crystal Saffron hint on your skin. Don’t buy it. Such a disappointment.

Ambrocenide bomb. I can barely smell the lavender in this.

On first sniff, I got pure, unadulterated super amber. That settled down after a minute, and I could see the “metal lavender” interpretation they are going for here. But it did not wow me — and that part lasted maybe an hour. After that, it was just pure super amber again. I could strongly smell that synthetic molecule for 45+ hours on my skin (insane). This is a chemical weapon. 😅 And unfortunately, I can’t recommend it. I think it’s very telling that so many people are reviewing this as smelling similar to Vanilla Powder and Crystal Saffron from Matiere Premiere. It is because the brand has put an overdose of unlisted super amber in those fragrances as well (unlisted for the US anyways, I’ve seen it disclosed as a primary ingredient in all 3 fragrances to EU customers on Nose Paris). To the brand: I beg of you, please stop putting so much super amber in everything. Or at least just be honest to all customers about what’s in it so we can make an informed choice. There’s a reason the super amber was conveniently not disclosed in most note lists. That was obviously a marketing choice and would detract from the “raw natural ingredients” marketing campaign. Instead, this fragrance is giving “modern chemical spill.” 😭 This is bound to cause migraines for those with sensitivities. It caused many days of migraines for me & other people deserve to know what they might experience. I personally cannot be in the same room as someone wearing this without experiencing physical pain. For me, this is actually the worst, most physically painful reaction to a fragrance I’ve ever had in the thousand+ I’ve skin tested— and in my opinion the worst fragrance I’ve ever smelled in my entire life. TLDR: migraine-inducing super amber bomb with eternal longevity.

Another example of brands responding to the collective whining of people who are obsessed with ultra strong fragrances, and equate that with quality. In this monstrosity, lavandin is overdosed. True lavender is softer and sweeter, where lavandin is sharp and contains waaay more camphor, and that's exactly what you get here. It bursts forth cutting through everything else. So sharp it almost gave me a bloody nose. I'm kidding, but you get the point. Skip this unless you like your lavender scents sharp and obnoxious.

What a disappointment, as Tshahb mentioned, really crass synthetics through and through. The lavender is really great quality you can tell but the harshness I just cannot get over. Like Vanilla Powder, the use of synthetics to give sillage just makes it too much for me personally. The opening was completely unbearable. Drydown is ok, lavender shines a bit more but still muted by the synthetics. Really wanted to love this but I just can't.

Someone obliterate this fragrance off the face of the earth. Horrible, screechy harsh ambrocenide bomb do not recommend. I would give it less than a 0/10 if possible. So much potential, high quality ingredients ruined a by super dose of overly diffusive, screechy aroma chemicals.

I’m convinced that this is a social experiment. How much can a brand’s prestige make up for such a pisspoor attempt at a fragrance. Literal paint thinner. It smells so unrefined....borderline noxious 😂🙏

I definitely got the metallic note and it made me feel like I was in a hospital morgue. This is pretty bad. I don’t get any lavender except maybe right on the first 5 seconds. Please try before you buy

Man this fragrance is a mess and probably the worst the brand has ever released, imo ofc. It's a very realistic lavender scent which some may find its strongest point, but I don't. The problem with being too realistic is that it smells like some table cleaner in the opening. Unfortunately, lavender is used a lot in cleaning products so that comparison will always exist especially when the scent is literally just lavender. The dry down is much better, because that strong lavander softens and you can smell some ozonic notes and the musk. Like many Matiere Premier fragrances this is also quite screechy and tough to wear. I'll give this a 4/10. It just lacks complexity, artistic vision, and honestly it can come off as cheap mainly because of the tons of aromachemicals used. It's easy to make a strong fragrance but if this is the cost then better not effin make it. If you really love natural lavender smell, get a Fragonard which is much cheaper as well. If you want a really beautifully worked one, then try Rehab from Initio which is my personal fave.
