M Generation

This was the second male fragrance produced by this House, which also began its activities in the field of jewelry. The first was Mauboussin Pour Homme, in 2003, which has both EDT and EDP versions. Before commenting on the fragrance, I want to clarify some confusing facts that I read during the research process for this review: the creator of this bottle it wasn't Thierry de Baschmakoff, but Thierry Faucon. The first, created the bottle for Jaguar Prestige, as well as some for Mauboussin. But not this one, which is equal to its predecessor, but with a metallized paint in shades of gold. Another curiosity about this bottle is that Mr.Faucon, in an interview, stated that this colouring was designed after a photo he took of a storm drain in New York, resisting to time and winning this aging tint. But best of all is the history of art: when he created the bottle for Mauboussin Pour Homme (2003), the inspiration was the luxurious hotel Burj al Arab, in Dubai. This information was passed to me by a colleague, who is also fond of perfumes, and confirmed on the official website of Lorience, the company that licenses the fragrances of this brand. But if I didn't know the history of the picture, I would swear that the colour was based on the sunset reflected in the sea and on the facade of the building. Finally, it still brings a safety switch with a rotary spray, preventing unwanted use. Now the most important: the fragrance. Composed with top notes of bergamot, Ceylon ginger, nutmeg, Sichuan Pepper and a touch of Bay leaves, besides roots of IRIS, jasmine from Egypt, cinnamon and incense, in the heart, still brings Guaiac wood, labdanum, cedar from Morocco and sandalwood, in the base. The result is strong and dry. As soon as it falls on the skin, presents incensed nuances (as if the incense was at the top of the olfactory pyramid) and it is possible to feel the scent of Bay leaves. But the ginger and the bergamot were entirely overshadowed. The evolution is too slow and it seems that the scent will stay just like that, with this aspect of niche perfume, dry and incensed. After approximately 1 hour, the jasmine begins to emerge, timid and not too floral, embraced by the sweetness of labdanum and with a creamier support, thanks to the nuances of sandalwood and guaiac. A wonder that appeals to all senses and has formidable sillage, being a full plate for lovers of perfumes conceived on the incense.

Yes, this is dry. Thank god. No lavender in sight. I tire of men's fragrances easily. I want them to be more masculine, more woody/spicy, less citrus, and more labdanum. I have only recently started experimenting with men's fragrances, and mostly, it's just a parade of lavender and that "aqua" scent. Because I adore Mauboussin Mauboussin and her sisters, I decided to try M Generation. What the heck. For the price point, it's worth the blind buy, right? I have strong brand loyalty to Mauboussin's fragrances because the "bang for the buck" is off the charts in favor of the consumer. And the bottles are FREAKING AWESOME. This one included. I agree that M Generations is light. It is summery. And it is lacking that horrid lavender-citrus (the ketchup of men's perfumes!). I am not getting any curry though. But I'm used to my nose being blind to many notes in fragrances. Bergamot, as a citrus note is here, but it does not overpower the scent as it can in most men's fragrances. Ginger is here, and together with the bergamot frames the composition and will be what I remember about this fragrance. The rest of the notes are nicely balanced, with no note really taking center stage. They are a chorus, harmonzing beautifully. Ginger is the tenor, bergamot is the soprano, and nutmeg/labdanum make up the alto section... if there is a bass (or "base" if you will), I'd say he exists as gauiac wood. This is not sweet. Or, if it has any sweet what-so-ever, it would be from the sweetness that a cedar would lend. It is not overly spicy, but that ginger is definately there. It is not too citrus. Seriously, this is very nicely balanced. If you made me label this in terms of gender, I'd call this "unisex" for sure. This is not a boomer of a scent. It does not last long, nor does it cast a long trail. For me, I need to continue applying it every hour or so. I'm curious to see more reviews. I hope they appear.

In the end, this was a perfect choice for me.. This is one of my absolute favorite fragrances. There is a strong, camphorous note in the opening. I'm guessing this is due to the bay leaf. That creeps back a bit and M Generation becomes an incense bomb that's been classed up with sweet, spicy Sichuan peppercorn and ginger. The main accord though, is a smoky, slightly oily guaic wood. Very smoky, but not overly dense. I prefer M Generation over a lot of incense fragrances I've tried (and I've tried a lot). I am kind of an incense fanatic. If you are entertaining the idea of purchasing Comme des Garcons Incense series, I'd highly recommend trying M Generation first. It's less one note and a ridiculous bargain for the quality.

I am wearing this today for the first time. It was a blind buy, but confidently bought because of the reviews and ratings here and how much I like Mauboussin Homme. My first impression is very positive. This is quality stuff. I sampled an Amouage perfume a while back (I forget which one) and I was struck by how smoky it was. M Generation has a similar but milder smokiness and is more balanced with the other ingredients. Obviously not as strong as the Amouage but that is OK. It is a fraction of the price so just spray a few more times. It is distinctly different to anything else I have which I like. I suspect it will soon become one of my favourites.

For me, this is a "real" cologne. Which, I should clarify, is that it is not sweet or gentle. It is like Polo Green in that it is unrelenting in its power and manliness. It is punch you in the face strong. And it lasts a long time. I really have to be in the mood to wear it. I love the gold bottle, although it is just exterior paint and does have a little chip in it. Apparently this is hard to find now, and I am glad to have it on my collection, although admittedly I don't reach for it much. Also, I find Atelier Gold Leather to be in a very similar vein, which I recently purchased, so now Gen M has some competition.

A truly beautiful incense. This quickly became a staple in my collection remains a fond favourite. A quality fragrance that to my mind evokes serenity, confidence and dignity. Elegance in a bottle. As a fan of frankincense this was manna from heaven. Almost identical to Clive Christian X (at a tiny fraction of the price). Wish I’d bought a lifetime supply when I had the chance. Can’t believe this has been discontinued.

Tantalizing spices. Heady iris. Intoxicating incense. Comforting woods. I've just described the perfect fragrance. M Generation IS the perfect fragrance. Don't hesitate to buy blind. I did, and could not be happier. Gorgeous mirrored glass bottle is an added bonus. Can see the juice through the glass towards the bottom where the mirror effect comes to a gradual end.

This is very good. It's the smell of pure and fine wealth. It develops in me as well which is remarkable the presence of cinnamon mixed with the rich incense that has here. Projection fine and longevity is amazing on my skin. I love it and there is where I go, what I noticed is not using it. I classify this: Smell: 9.5/10 Projection: 9/10 Longevity: 9.5/10

Aw man,i love this fragrance very much!This is incense at its purest state!Ok,it is refreshed by the citruses and spiced up enough,but this make it very appealing!Why to discontinue something like this?Maybe too expensive to produce or not enough a successwith the gents at the time of its release....Also,a more constructed scent,unusual by Mauboussin!

Great projection and lasting power, my first bottle is a tester from 2013 and it projects like a monster! Buttery smooth orris leather woody incense, subdued florals and spices blended well whithin. Still trying to find a good alternative to this, sad to see it go!

One of the few very good fragrance out there. Reminds me of DK Fuel for men, first released in the 90's. It is a solid, manly character and sets apart from other. 9/10 score

My all time favorite. Sadly it was discontinued. Hoping to find a good alternative as some of suggestions here are not as good as M Generation.

I've really been enjoying M Generation by Maubossin, and this scent was a complete surprise for me having heard so little about it. It's a great daily wear style of fragrance that manages to smell fresh, clean, and masculine while offering something different than what is typical of the genre. I wouldn't classify this as an "incense" fragrance first and foremost. I think any comparisons to the Comme des Garcons series are a little bit of a stretch, and it's not until the later stages of the dry down that the incense really becomes apparent. Bergamot, Ginger, and a sweet, aromatic note that I initially thought was Juniper dominate the opening and middle stages of M Generation. The sweet, aromatic aspect is probably some combination of the bay leaf and jasmine notes, which lend a fresh, airy quality to the dryness of the heart, and produce a nice scent trail. There's also a significant dose of pepper, which has good bite, and seems to permeate the entire composition, from beginning to end. The blending of the pepper, ginger, bergamot and bay leaf are top notch, and they all come together very nicely, in a harmonious way that feels natural and effortless. In reference to other reviews, I haven't smelled anything that reminds me of curry, however I definitely get some light cinnamon and nutmeg, and what one reviewer described as "camphor" is probably the sweet, aromatic note that I pick up in the opening. Over time, a dry incense note begins to emerge and it blends seamlessly with an equally dry, slightly smoky guiac wood. This is where M Generation finally rests, and it's a very well-paired base that remains dry, aromatic, and clean. What I really like about M Generation is that it presents a very wearable incense as well, that's part of a larger whole, so it's not so literal as to feel like you're wearing midnight mass or like you just stepped out of a zendo after a week-long retreat. Overall, I would describe this as a clean, brisk fragrance with a sweet aromatic trail that runs over a base of dry incense and guaiac wood. At times it has an almost cold, bitter quality to it, but it remains personable in spite of this. Sillage is moderate, though some may prefer a stronger projection, and I normally get 6 to 8 hours of longevity. I find a liberal application is best (about 6 sprays), and really allows M to shine. Perhaps its best quality is versatility. In my opinion, this could be worn any time of the year in any situation during the day and maybe the evening as well. While I wouldn't describe M as mind-blowing, it's really good at what it does and it fills a vital spot in my wardrobe (an appealing, daily-wear fragrance with incense). Highly recommended, especially considering the price. The really cool bottle is just a bonus that comes along with this very nice juice

I am ever so slightly bemused that this was launched in 2010. The reason being this is pure nostalgia for me. This takes me straight to the 1980s and the wonderful (pre-IFRA) powerhouse fragrances released by the great fragrance houses of the day. Sadly M Generation is not a powerhouse. However, it is a gem, albeit a throw-back. A rare find in a playing field bestrewn with non-event "me too" identikit, boringly predictable, artificial concoctions that pass for much of today's perfumery. Nutmeg, ginger, bayleaf, pepper, cinnamon, orris root = SPICE. This is a spicy perfume. (Ignore anything written to the contrary). A sort of gingerbread ambience prevails throughout, though in the dry down it is more balsamic, soapy, and woody. M Generation has light to moderate sillage, and I manage about 3 hours (hard to tell on oneself) in warm British spring weather before it noticeably fades to a skin scent - although one that lasts several hours. A beautiful scent then. Just desperate for better longevity. I've been thinking of comparisons, but none come easily to mind. It is virtually meaningless suggesting a cross between D&G The One and Geo. Trumper's Milk of Flowers. After some deliberation, I would say I am reminded a little of the much lamented and long lost favourite "original" (1981) Burberry for Men, which was an absolute belter and one of the best scents of it's era. Living and working in and around London in the early to mid 1980s, this is the sort of scent I'd encounter in the offices, homes and embassies routinely visited in the nicer parts of town. A majestic composition that comes across as rich and classy. I salute you Mauboussin; in my eyes, you may never surpass this achievement - unless of course you make a pure essence, which is what this is crying-out for. How about it? Anyone listening over in Paris?

Was about to do a full review on this one coming from doing the Maubossin Homme review. Then I read @ferdinand66 review below and said to myself.....well, what can I add after his excellent review?. Not much, but I'll also say that this is very very dry, if you are not used to niche perfumes (and I am not), then you may not like this one, so do not blind buy. I like it, but prefer the incense on Gucci envy, or the sweet aspect of another incense cheapy, Azzaro dB.

the incense is super pronounced, super dominant from top to base note. I mostly used it as a layer with some other fragrances, because it just too much incense.

Great cheapy that can be worn daily. Dry, light incense, woods, and spices that's mostly linear, but turns a tad powdery. Good stuff.

Smells quite good and it transitions smoothly. Weak longevity and spillage though.

UPDATE: My original impression of this fragrance was very good. But over time, I began to lose my enthusiasm. There's something... "peculiar" about M Generation. A "synthetic" note appears at the start, gradually subsides, but never leaves. _______________________________________________________ I picked up a bottle of this eau de parfum for slightly less than $30 at the major "FragranceNet" on-line store. I bought it blind, based on reviews. While I find this is an incense focused fragrance, I find it has a softness in projection for the wearer, like Amouage Jubilation XXV. It's not what I'd call "spicy", but still has a warm incense impression. It is fairly well blended and smooth--the ginger, various woods, cinnamon, and other spices are balanced. You will get more of a "kick" to it if you spray on more liberally. The flacon is a thing unto itself, standing on its own much like the Burj al Arab hotel in Dubai. The copper gradient coating creates a wonderful appearance of old world quality. The spray nozzle rotates from locked to unlocked position and back again by twisting it. I found it sometimes difficult to rotate back into locked position and discovered that this is due to slight downward pressure. Always try to push only from the sides. If it gets stuck, slide a fingernail in the gap and lift up. Just don't force it as the sprayer can break. Otherwise... wow, what a bottle! After it is empty, you can place it on a table top as a work of art. My only gripe is the longevity. You really need to layer this in order to get it to last for a decent stretch. Meanwhile, something like Jubilation is a "passive powerhouse" and lasts at least 6 hours longer. Still, for the price there's no reason to hesitate on an extra spray or two. It was very inexpensively priced in 2014/2015 through FragranceNet, then stock dried up. BeautySpin has it inexpensively again. It's worth a blind buy and I expect resale will be easy down the road. Fragrance: 7.1, Bottle: 9.2, Longevity: 7, Value: 8.0

Tried this on my regular parfume shops,for my oppinion i believe most chinese will feel it smells like very strong chinese medicine smell for woman after pregnancy .Im pretty sure this juice contain some herbs vibes which is similliar with chinese herbs medicine.No other comment on this because i hate the scent of this and i will confirm there will be no chinese ppl will love the smell either.Never blind buy for this and make sure have a tester on it before make any decision to get bigger bottle.Soryy

A pleasant light-incense fragrance; safe for the office and those who are just making their foray into incense fragrances. I picked this one up dirt cheap more than a year ago and I'm glad to have it in my scent armory. I find it to be a decent light-incense fragrance (excellent for a designer) and it's well-worth the $25 I paid for a bottle. Performance is average; it lasts 5-6 hour on my skin and projects moderately. A solid like from me.

Just like polo green, chinese med smelling. You better get some chinese medicine and pour that over your body. Cheap and stronger than this

This is something akin to L'Occitane Labdanum de Seville or your poor man's version of Amouage Jubilation for Men. M Generation is a much less bold incense scent, however. Despite my bottle being an EdP, it is still transparent and light but has the same deep nuances as Jubilation, minus the big musk and far less smoky. Not so much a fan of M Gen's opening. I really love Jubilation's mix of notes--you definitely know a lot of good stuff went into it. The trouble with Jubilation is that it is a BIG scent, unapologetic, in your face, bordering on brash, IMO. I get sick of it when I put too much on, which is two or more sprays. Back to M Generation...this is definitely much better for everyday wear. The price out there for an EdP is excellent right now. Worthy of a blind buy. I was expecting more incense and more iris, but there's enough labdanum in there to make it a much pleasant scent.

This reminds me a bit of Equus, but this one has a little ambery/syrupy quality not present in Equus. It's not like Envy for Men because there's no clear lavender, and I don't get much sandalwood (different spice presentation as well). At first I find it a bit irritating, actually, but it quickly calms down and at that point there's more of a blended quality. It's not especially sweet nor floral, but the spice and wood elements are obvious. I'd rather go for Bentley Intense, though the spices there are more medicinal and it's got a "boozy" note included (and it's a little powdery). A couple hours in and it has an almost watery quality, sort of like wood soaked in spiced water, with a hint of a sweet ambery element. I just did a dab sampling so I'll update after I do a regular wearing. UPDATE: It seems to get more like Equus in the far drydown.

This one took me so long to find! I had a saved search on ebay for like 7 or 8 years. One popped up around 4 years ago and i quickly bought it, but a few days later the seller messaged me and said they couldn't find it in their inventory so cancelled the order. But persistence finally paid off and i was able to get a bottle at the beginning of January! I think this must of only been in production for a very short time, maybe less than a couple of years. Either way, it was worth the time and effort trying to get this one because it is very VERY nice! The Incense in here is beautiful, and the warm spices "ginger and cinnamon' are really well balanced and give this fragrance such a unique smell. It also has a nice iris feel running through it that i wasn't expecting 'probably from the Orris. Classy stuff indeed. 9/10

M Generation is a very interesting, entirely underrated fragrance. To my nose, the orris root and ginger are almost equally as strong as the dry incense in the opening. Eventually the waxy smell fades out a bit, and the ginger backs down, but there's always something there to support the incense. Sometimes a fragrance paints a vivid picture in your mind. I imagine I'm in a warm gothic church when I smell M Generation. There's a large wooden alter covered in old wax with candles burning on it in front of me. There are sachets of dried flowers and spices next to the candle, and incense is in the air. It really is a beautiful scent.

Hello!? Gucci Envy anyone!? HOW is nobody comparing this to Gucci Envy? They are so close! Odd thing is, I don't know, maybe my nose has evolved during my fragrance sampling journey, but I didn't like Envy at first, and I loved M Generation right away. I kept thinking to myself 'but this smells SO CLOSE to something else I've sampled!' I reached for the Envy sample I have and BAM, it came together. Spices, wood, and ginger, it's all there. These two are extremely similar. So, since Envy is discontinued now, get this, it's gorgeous and cheap and on me at least, it has great projection.

This one is good. At a start it evoked Fahrenheit minus the violet charm, but it was just a first (and false) impression. Mauboussin M Generation is resinous and woody,with a generous touch of oud, more in the style of high quality Italian "griffe" fragrances like Bvlgari or Trussardi which prefer to be closer to the skin and not so loud and omnipresent at all. Discrete, masculine and very, very elegant. For me it's a mature scent for serious men with a bit of a temper...

It is really dry, dusty, and incredibly boring; like an old cedar chest full of meaningless trinkets. Poor longevity, poor sillage. The bottle is lovely, and I suppose the price is inexpensive (roughly $30 US). Fans of dry, incense-y middle eastern fragrances like Bentley Absolute or Davidoff Leather Blend might dig this, but I thought it was a total yawn and devoid of any presence whatsoever.

this was really suprise to me , i am a women and i am totaly dont like the expensive Juozas Statkevicius perfume , but this one immediatly reminde me Juozas Statkevicius but i like it , its less loud and you dont feel like you ware Mephitidae fur, its Mystere , somkey , and spicy , Tumulte pour Homme Christian Lacroix also jump in my mind give it a try ! the bottle is also very beutiful

One of the best smelling scents ever ! It's so classy , it gives you a true gentleman aura. Very rare are perfumes with this strenght of character. I have tried many incense based scents (it's my favorite note ever) from the cheap to very expensive oriental perfumes and this is the most refined incense I ever smelled.

When I had purchased this bottle, I didn't know what to expect? Not bad. To me it is a relaxed feeling type of perfume. Not over powering type, but it is noticeable. I give it an 7. I enjoy the smell. Good for the fall and winter to me. Not a bad price to pay for it. Pick up a bottle you can't go wrong with it.

The mix of Bay leaf, labdanum & ginger provide very special aura to this scent. Its very unusual yet yummy and comforting! Woods and incense give it a nice body! Definitely a unique fragrance with a great performance in terms of silage, projection and longevity, definitely way above average!

I am also a woman, and now I now have Moubossin M Generation. This is a wonderful perfume, it is really like, even with J. Statkevicius Josef Statkus perfume !!!!! Just a bit milder. Longevity is amazing. Recommend.

masculine, light...I'm wearing it right know..it's perfect for summer..very smooth and distintive...not an in-you-face cologne...more refined and quiet...This and original Maubossin are one of my favorites

If you do not like Indian curry spice then don't try this fragrance. I get a very heavy curry over oud wood making it a very very dry fragrance.

Toooo Smokie but lats reaaally long, good overall, i like the drydown is delicious.
