Mauboussin Pour Lui in Black

This scent is a warm patchouli-heavy orange caramel. An everyday wear-type fragrance. Does not offend because of how subdued it is but also doesn't seperate itself too much from other fresh spicy scents. I'm surprised it's categorized as 'woody', i can barely smell any wood except for some faint cedar. This one grew on me quite a bit -- it smells like artisinal, wood smoked mandarin sweet caramel bites. Very comforting. I hope Mauboussin does not discontinue this.

Lovely cost effective scent. Not a strong performer though. ABSOLUTE almost dead ringer at a cursory quick whiff on the arm for Guerlain L'Homme Ideal EDP Intense until you press your nose into it, take a deep smell and I realise the Cherry/Almond is replaced with a dry caramel - so as far as caramel goes its quite subtle. I would agree with the notes except for the mint. Happy Smelling

A smooth warm and lovely caramel, floral, woody and fruity perfume. Staying power and projection are good. Similar family to Bad Intense but this has more character. Longevity and silage are excellent. By the way.....if at first you're not too sure about this, give it longer. It may really grow on you - it did for me. I love this juice, this is a real gem - in my top 10 ever.

Caramel squares kept in a guiac wood keepsake box with little satchels of dried sage & violets. Smells amazing; opens fresh and a touch soapy, becomes immediately sweet with a definite heft that lingers on skin and clothes. Perfect for cool/cold weather, projects very loudly for the first hour. Need to wear all day to see how long it lasts, but I can see this persisting.

Nothing dark or black in it ... The sweetest and most beautifull mandarin in late summer in Italy- on the spot. Caramel kicks later, after that some flowers ... very well made. Please, try it ... for 20 Euro now ... it is well spended money, nothing to lose... total unisex.

Nice, solid, useful, not especially inspiring. Soft, work friendly. I only notice the caramel accord as such when I focus on it. At other times I forget about it and it recedes into the background of what I think I'm smelling mostly as mandarin, and benzoin and/or unimposing wood. The mint and probably the sage just about cut through the mix, along with a patchouli note that at the same time is perhaps just dark and rich enough to thicken the caramel aroma and complement the woods. There's a texture and doubtless a sweetness to the caramel aspect that reminds me of sandalwood (without quite smelling like sandalwood). It's perhaps in part as if a very gentle incense stick had just been lit. There's a slight hint of--burnt sugar, possibly, in the caramel, or a hint of something burnt anyway, to pleasant enough effect. Maybe the guaiac wood plays a part in that. There's a kind of creamy smoothness but I feel as if the fragrance is too light, unassuming and balanced to qualify as a sensuous gourmand. I find the base quite understated (and refined/clean), at least in terms of recognisable notes and accords, and presence. All the same I think that the patchouli plays a big part in grounding the scent (primarily the caramel) so that it doesn't just become a sickly mess or so much non-descript wood and sweetness. It's a nice, effective fragrance but I doubt I'll use it often outside of work settings. I probably won't choose it often for my own enjoyment, and even if I'm just popping to the supermarket, there will probably always be other scents I'm more likely to choose.

Similar DNA to Armani Code. Opens sweet and dark: Tonka, Orange, Caramel. Dries down soapy and a bit floral with some amber. It's an interesting fragrance to say the least, but it smells very outdated. If this came out in the early 2000's it probably would have made a bigger mark than it did. I like Mauboussin and they have had some interesting releases, but this one is rather forgettable. Longevity was okay at around 6-7 hours. The choice to start sweet and end clean makes this a difficult fragrance to really pick occasions to wear. It starts out as an autumn and winter fragrance and ends as something more suited to mid to late Spring and early Summer. I got this as a 10ml travel spray from fragrancenet, it fell and shattered into 100 pieces and I couldn't even smell it in my room anymore the next day even though at least 8ml of it was still in there. Make of that what you will. I may repurchase at some point and try it again if I see a good deal on it. It's kind of in the same vein as Prada Luna Rossa Sport (sweet opening, clean dry down) but it's not as good as LRS.

It says much about this discreet, almost self-effacing, scent that I have owned it for a year and only now am I writing a review. When it arrived, ( blind bought, but YouTube recommended) , I tried it, thought it pleasant.... and then forgot about it! Only now am I realising how really good it is in its subtle non-shouty way. I was hasty to dismiss its shy demeanour. The mandarin /mint opening rapidly gives place to the caramel/violet/ woody vibe that envelops you in a warming, comforting way. It does not go in for loud sillage but hugs you like an old friend. In colder weather it’s gourmand charm is a real day brightener.

If someone of you, guys, is interested in an opinion of a woman: OMG! This is so classic and beautiful! Typically manly scent, no matter, how old are you. I was smitten smelling this. On the beginning relatively strong, but after a half hour it softens. Nothing scratchy but lovely. Full, dense and a bit sour. For every occasion and all seasons. Nothing cheap here. High qualities french perfume. Go with light hand, it is very aromatic juice! I sprayed it yesterday twice on my pillow. It smells the whole day and night and the whole room.

Bought this a while back but it kinda got lost in the shuffle of my other fragrances. Used it again yesterday for the first time in a year or so. When I got it I was very critical of fragrances...to the point where I either loved it or wouldn't wear it. Glad I gave this a second chance! It's a warm and somewhat gourmand scent but not dessert sweet. My nose does pick up a sweet, dry caramel. It has good longevity and moderate spillage. But that caramel note, once I picked it up, is so nice. Not a top ten but still a nice scent.

Aromatic, juicy candy on a patchouli, powder, wood base. Benzoin starts out dry and diffuse, cloud-like, then gets sweeter and more concentrated, vanilla-esque. Tender and introverted. Super strong, super long-lasting, with average to weak sillage. My husband wears this now and then, and it comes across as a pleasant surprise. Would not re-buy, though my husband might. Adding: a sweet, spicy cloud, with warm swirls of contrasting freshness. It's decent, in my book. Nothing more.

You know what I actually like this. I didn’t really like it at first cause it does smell a little basic to me for some reason. It was also a lot more shower gel fresh than I was originally expecting. I thought it would be something more along the lines of Luna Rossa black or Armani code but it’s a lot more fresh imo. Now after wearing it for a week I feel that it’s a pretty serviceable fragrance. I wouldn’t say it’s a masterpiece but it’s pleasant for sure.

I find Mauboussin Pour Lui in Black to be a soapy, caramel, fresh alpine scent that is pleasing on the opening but improves on the dry-down that is warm and alluring. Worth picking up a bottle of Mauboussin Pour Lui in Black its generic-ish but hard to say what else it compares with...maybe Armani Code with a touch of Dolce and Gabbana One. This fragrance will not disappoint but less than moderate longevity and sillage could be better.

If Armani Code and JPG Scandal had a baby, this would be it. Although, this came out before Scandal. Great Quality for a reasonable price. I imagine that this is one of those fragrances that will be in high demand if it ever gets discontinued, but only because it would peak people's curiosity.

Blind buy....not my thing. I definitely don't hate this scent, but i don't like it much. Smells to much like candy. The scent...the quality...nothing wrong, but just not my thing.

#814 in my "Tour de Fragrance" This is the same scent as Armaf Odyssey "Mandarin Sky" with a hint of mint you can barely detect. This scent came first in 2015 and Mandarin Sky was released in 2023, so you'd really say Mandarin Sky is the same scent as Mauboussin Pour Lui in Black. Side-by-side you really cannot tell the difference. Mandarin Sky is higher rated at 4:40, probably because the Odyssey line is popular thanks to Odyssey Black and Odyssey White. I know I bought the whole line because of those two (Don't waste your money on Aqua, Tyrant, Mega and Wild). Both this and Mandarin Sky are okay, but too fruity for me. I like mandarins on my salads, not so much in my fragrances. I passed Mandarin Sky along recently and will do the same with this one. If you like light mandarin scents, you'll probably like this well enough. You're not out a lot of money blind buying this. It's car pool, elevator and office safe, but it's certainly not sexy. To me this is one for the gym bag at most. Moderate projection and longevity, but you'd probably reapply this twice in the course of the day.

Cant judge it, dont like caramel in fragrances.What i can say, that it 100% better than scandal jpg.But code seems to be better

It's a soft gourmand fragrance... Benzoin, carmel, citrus notes...mix with the sage and woody notes will rock you and anyone around to sleep(meaning it's relaxing)...This will put you in a comfort zone, once the dry down kicks in. That why to me, it's a perfect date fragrance. That won't offend anyone, no matter how many sprays you use...Trust me i tried;-(. But my coworkers like it and got one random comment from someone i didn't know...So that was a pick me up. It's a perfect close encounter fragrance(movies, cuddling, sitting down on a bench in central park with your other half, alone time with your significant other at your place). An extremely generic blue fragrance. It is cheap, and it smells cheap, but it's a good execution on cheap materials. I don't like it because the notes list looked very promising and I do feel it's selling a bit of a lie. I do not believe that this fragrance has a single natural ingredient in it. There are some blue base notes that I'm picking up, probably iso e super, and it's got a little bit of fragant dissonance with some of the other notes. The top note is decent but synthetic smelling. Truly guys, it's ok but there are better cheapies. A lot better.

It's like a drugstore fragrance that smells great for high school. Once you graduate, you won't spray it again.

In short - this was a no go for me. Blind bought a bottle according to the notes (caramel and mandarin + patchouli and mint ... what's not to like?), and turned out a big no. I get a strong synthetic note (might be the benzoin) which restulted in almost an alergic reaction. Had to wash it off with soap and ended up giving the bottle to a friend. On a side note - I am a a bit of alergic to some ingredients (could be the case here), but in all fairness I never had issues with anything Hermes / Dior / Chane l/ Cartier / Bvlgari etc.. which are my usual go to (or even Miyake - just to be in the same price range). Opens with a promising blend of caramel sage and citrus, however after ten minutes the violet accord takes over and the fragrance turns very similar to toilet cleaner, and has a definite whiff of urinal freshener blocks. How disappointing.

This is my first full bottle of any Mauboussin fragrance and I must say that I am impressed. A glance at the notes listed above and you might expect Pour Lui In Black to be some kind of sweet, syrupy and woody mess; but on the contrary this is a very well-constructed and nicely blended oriental scent. Despite the presence of a dominant caramel fudge note, Pour Lui In Black does not come across as even remotely sweet (think Prada’s Candy, Mugler’s Angel, or Pink Sugar) rather it is more in the vein of Hermes’ Elixir des Merveilles, but without the orange peel. It also reminds me somewhat of Dior’s Privée Fève Délicieuse, in that it’s a bit dry and dusty with a touch of smoke. It’s definitely a salty and buttery caramel. Although guaiac wood (which is usually quite a strong note to my nose) is listed as the woody component, Pour Lui In Black does not feel particularly ‘woody’ to me. Instead I feel that the use of the wood note is just to counter balance the buttery caramel. The presence of the violet is fleeting at best, but there is just enough of a hint that it prevents this from being all about the caramel. Make no mistake though that the caramel top note is still detectable throughout the entire time that this lasts on my skin. For an EDP concentration, the longevity is as I would expect at between 9 and 10 hours. The sillage provides a nice soft cloud that can be detected throughout the day. For those that care about compliments, it is worth noting that as soon as I walked into the office this morning my female colleague who sits about 2 metres away immediately commented on how nice my choice of fragrance was. The presentation of the flacon is also very nice with its solid frosted black glass. I doubt that this will be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are in the market for a nice non-sweet caramel and can’t afford Dior’s Privée Fève Délicieuse, this is a great and more affordable alternative. P.S. I was unable to detect any trace of either mandarin or mint anywhere in this fragrance.

I used two full sprays to the chest because it generates a fine mist, but the projection doesn't seem that good. The smell, though, exceeds expectations, as I have never encountered anything like this before; it smells natural, and yet it has a kind of abstract gourmand quality. Though I'd call it unisex, I'd also say it's on the masculine side of that ever-changing boundary. I can't say I get any of the listed notes clearly, but that may be because I need to go with perhaps five sprays (or more), so if you dislike "cheap wood" notes or "chemical violet" ones, I doubt you will dislike this scent for that kind of reason. However, if you are looking for a gooey/sweet gourmand, this probably will be a disappointment. Instead, the smell is more like mature/niche (no grape candy type stuff), if there is such a category. UPDATE: Over time, I get a coffee-like quality, though again more of an "abstraction of coffee" than a literal kind of coffee. UPDATE 2: Perhaps 4 or 5 hours after application I was able to detect the notes better, and while I got the violet and wood elements, I was hoping for a salty gourmand, just not outrageously sweet, but it stays "abstract" and is quite interesting but not as enjoyable (to me) because it's not especially gourmand. I'd certainly rank this higher than just about any recent designer scent I've tried! UPDATE 3: Second regular wearing and the wood note is too strong and "chemical." This has happened recently with a couple others, so while disappointed, at least I can swap it off without any regrets! UPDATE 4: This is a "mist and walk through it" scent. Doing it that way, it's quite nice, though I find the combination of notes a bit odd.

Just received a bottle of this in what seems to be the hard to find edp formulation. only sprayed 1 spritz... opens with a beautiful strong blast familiar but can't remember to what. can smell a caramel sweet scent very intoxicating. at the moment I would say definitely nightime wear formal or casual. will test run this tomorrow night at work and update update: well the first night it lasted well and projected moderately but the second time didn't seem to project as far, still long lasting and everyone I asked to smell it gave me the thumbs up. deffo safe blind buy. get plenty of caramel sweetness but not to cloying. really like this fragrance and a 'go to' for night-time wear.

The bottle is a smooth, matt black glass, feels chunky, well designed, quite beautiful. The scent is slightly smoky, oudy, spicy, sweet, pleasant, inoffensive, no wow factor just nice. Longevity is non-existent on me. Applied in car, 10 minutes from workplace. Not a single comment from colleagues? This is a nice odour but, my nose did not deceive me. There was zero odour after just ten minutes. It is inexpensive. Will not purchase again. Works well with a few diffuser sticks popped in after removing the lid and looks the part in my black and white art decor bathroom. 2/10 for the bottle. Not really bothered if it tips over and pours down the loo.

My main issue with PL In Black is that there is a very sharp, synthetic, (to the point:cheap) note of violet and guiac wood. Guiac wood done right is beautifully aromatic and pungent in a nice way, but here it comes off too annoying. So I decided to drop a couple of drops of patchouli EO, and it solved my problem. The patchouli not only tamed the sharpness but it made the synthetic materials breathe (meaning it allow me to tell the notes a bit better). I mean, I can definitely tell the annoying note is still there, but more subtle, with more depth... go figure. It's a nice scent, but nothing to go nuts over in my opinion. Smell great my friends.

My Mauboussin Pour Lui arrived today, It only comes in EDP variation. Mine was advertised as EDT on the website I bought it from. On first sniff straight out of the bottle I get the mint and mandarin which quickly blends in with the caramel/fudge. It is sweet but not in a sickening way. On my skin I can smell a faint herb kind of scent which I discovered is sage. The sweetness remains but now mixed with a floral woodiness. I got to say I'm pleasantly surprised with this and well worth the blind buy. I would say this is definitely a night time fragrance. Sweet, woody and a little floral but definitely not in a feminine way. A good buy.

Very nice scent and totally classic. The price tag makes it easy for everyone to buy and wear. Longevity is very good, sprayed at 8AM and could still smell it at around 3 in the afternoon. Not sure about the silage but moderate is just about right. I see the resemblance to Armani Code too, although this one starts a little bit more sweet and ends with bitter, woody scents and Armani Code is almost the other way around. In general, totally recommended for daily wear and also for some occasions if you want.

This is a very nice perfume. It is for my nose more an Italian perfume than French. The mandarin is very prominent from the start. Then it mixes with caramel ad then slowly goes into a flower fresh violette and fads slowly into a woody green patchouli scent. I like it very much. The freshness is very nice and it reminds me of the Acqua d'Elba series. It is better than the Armani version most reviews point at. It is truly a sophisticated scent and very suitable for warmer days.

Somewhat comparable to Ferragamo Uomo, kinda similar sweet stuff used probably, but much more pleasant due to the absence of Ambroxan.. Nice balance with woody patchouli keeping it from becoming too gourmand. Kinda reminds me of Emporio Armani Diamonds for Men as well. A decent close encounter cheapie (though the lowest discounted price I saw where I live is typically around $40-$50 for 100ml).

This is a very nice smell. Not overpowering, but what you would like sometimes when you feel like just being quiet. Mellow that is all I can say. Very pleasant. It last a good while. One of those relaxing type of smells. Try it you not go wrong on this one. I give it a 8 to 8.5. Maybe more as I give it a chance. But it is worth the price. Get it now before it goes up in value.

Takes a while to settle down but once it does, a dry caramel is the best description, comes across as a cheap Luna Rossa Ocean EDT. The woody base is somewhat unique although the soft sweetness rings of familiarity.

To my nose this is a very decent, caramel led fragrance. Maybe a little too sweet up top but within ten minutes or so dries back to a very comforting cold weather scent. Very pleased to own this one 👍🏻

The notes seem promising on this one Caramel and mint go well together even for a short time and with the violet and base of benzoin? I want to try this one.

Also available in the Netherlands for under 40EUR. Any comments on the scent itself? Longevity? Silage?

Great opening. Beautiful scent. Well blended. Smells much more expensive that its actual price.
