Ambre Topkapi

Although classified as a woody-spicy, Ambre Topkapi opens wich a freshness of citrus notes of pineapple and bergamot, by the way, MUCH more pineapple than bergamot and after a while the spiciness of its heart appears with cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, basil, lavender and thyme. The scent isn't strong and you can run down because the fragrance does not really last too much as I was expecting to, so at the end you can see that a little bit of musk and vanilla can be noted and then you realise that it is time to give you some good sprays again. For me this fragrance should be classified as an unisex citrus fragrance, and it is perfect to be wore no matter the season of the year nor the hour. It is a nice parfum with a very special bottle, or better, it can not be called just a bottle, it is a masterpiece.

When I first tried this, I thought the decant I was sent was accidentally filled with the wrong liquid. Where's the amber? If you can ignore that the name has the word ambre in it, this is a very good scent. The ingredients smell high quality and it's well blended. Evidence of this blending is in the pineapple as I can typically spot this note a mile away, but here it's mixed seamlessly. The best way I can approximate the scent is that it smells like a mixture of vintage Creed Himalaya, and current batches of Millisme Imperial. The citrus materials actually made my mouth water, which is rare. 🤤. Fbw for me but it's expensive so I'll look for a partial. Smells nothing like HDP 1725 which is a lavender/baby powder dandy frag. Scent 8/10 Performance 7/10

No words can do justice to how beautifully balanced and well blended this is. Sure it isn't your typical Amber fragrance, but that is where the beauty lies in this 'for me anyway'. It takes Amber lovers out of their comfort zone, which i love! You know the ones.. they think all Ambers should be resinous, dark, rich and heavy... maybe for you! Amber Topkapi brings to the table a more wearable Amber fragrance. One that is uplifting but yet delicate and comforting. It simply is a joy to wear! Blended exquisitely, and so different to what's out there today that to this nose Amber Topkapi is a welcome breath of fresh air. This is elegant, understated, and refined. A timeless beauty. 9/10

A nice, well-composed, balanced scent. Another Pierre Bourdon pre-Aventus use of pineapple. Bourdon did a characteristically good job with this composition. Lightly sweet with fruits top and base, and cinnamon, with nutmeg and caraway taming the sweetness. The use of caraway here is done judiciously - no body odor so characteristic of cumin or caraway overuse. Performance seems disappointing though. Scent profile is King, though, and Topkapi works in that regard. I now have a full bottle of Ambre Topkapi. Not similar to Creed EROLFA, my favorite maritime/oceanic scent of all time, at all. And only marginally more similar to Milliseme Imperial.

How this doesn't have much more love and hype beats me. If you like barber shop lavender type frags, this is the holy grail of them. The best. Masculine, clean fresh lavender awesomeness. Not for beginners, one must know a little something to appreciate this art. Pure art perfection. Don't get it twisted, Cuir Garamante is the best from the line, this being second and invasion barbare is my least favorite, not sure why everyone only talks about it... 9/10

Absolutely lovely. I'm not a super fan of these types of scents usually but this smells super great, super clean, rather discret, definitely signature worthy (much like Invasion Barbare). I would have sweared it comes from MFK house. As always with this house, it's super expensive while the performance isn't mindblowing. I don't find it similar to Millesime Imperial or 1725... 8,5/10

Decent longevity for a freshie on me, it’s a great daytime fragrance that can be dressed up or down. It’s inoffensive and easy to wear. The grapefruit and lavender smell very realistic and lovely. A dumb reach for a warm spring/summer outing. Love it

The only feeling this one stirs in me is one of abject disappointment! I couldn't wait to try this I imagined it was fantastic from the notes. Also I desperately want to add one of these to my wardrobe...I mean the STOPPER IS A SCULPTED BUST for heavens sake!!! Don't get me wrong this smells good, fresh well balanced and blended notes that crate a masculine mix of musk and oakmoss with fruity top notes and lavender. Just to mention the opening, it's wonderfully fruity for a split second and that pineapple note is really nice. I just suspect its a victim of being too understated for something which should stand up and be counted considering the grandiose, borderline pomposity of the brand and packaging and above all price. I really hate to be a philistine but this to me smells like a long lost Lynx deodorant from the 90's, albeit a very nice classy version. Dry down is pleasant longevity is average. Certainly has something of the mundane about it, I was expecting to be swept away by Ambre Topkapi instead I just feel a bit empty. I really, really hope that Invasion Barbare is better because I want one of these preposterously opulent flacons! Update 07/02/2026 so 12 years ago I wrote the above review and this fragrance was over 10years old then! I have to say I’ve had a strange relationship with this one since. When I wrote the above review I’d been a fragrance enthusiast for many years and was aware of this brand without having tried them until that point. Subsequently I’ve returned to Ambre Topkapi as the name stuck in my head and the last time I tried it, let’s say 6 years ago... I thought I really, really, liked it and that has been the prevailing mental impression was AT is a good fragrance. Well I’m wearing it today and just to temper that I’m back to being lukewarm about it. I’m going to upgrade the Lynx deodorant to either the men’s CK Escape or Eternity maybe RL Polo Sport but I’m doubling down on it smelling 90’s it’s very fucking 90’s look at the references. I’d say, aromatic, herbal, lavender, citrus, musky, the amalgam is the combination, the transitional phase of freshie and more traditional men’s perfume from the decade previous. It’s very nice actually but quite nondescript and seems expensive for what it is.

Definitely a bit misleading when amber is the name, the absence of amber is a bit problematic and begets a little explanation (consider Tom Ford Rive d'Ambre, a similar culprit). Parfums MDCI Ambre Topkapi is a fairly generic-smelling spicy, sweet, fresh mix dominated by vetiver, citrus, and woods. Not much evolution, complexity, or intrigue. Performance is surprisingly weak after trying Invasion Barbare yesterday. Invasion Barbare has great performance but Ambre Topkapi is almost a skin scent within an hour of wearing. The scent itself isn't unpleasant but it's sadly benign and average, and the cost of $250 for 75ml isn't remotely justified. Skip this one and smell something else. 6 out of 10

I had a decant of this for a long time, and loved it whenever I put a bit of it on. I wanted to smell this all the time. Felt rich and powerful. It took me a long time to make the jump and buy the really expensive actual bottle. But now that I have become more familiar with other high end fragrances, and I actually have this and spray it on, I end up a bit disappointed. It doesn't have any interaction or synergy with my skin. There's no real complexity or much evolution. And it doesn't last very long. So, the expensive bottle mostly stands in the back on my shelf, to remind me to choose a bit more carefully in the future, and that expensive doesn't necessarily mean a better experience.

This smelled exactly like Creed's Himalaya upon initial spraying. The musk is very strong on the open. 10 minutes later, and it has dried down to lavender and a bit of pineapple, which is nice. The problem is, after a couple inhales of this pleasant scent, Ambre Topkapi seems to break down, with various disjointed ingredients coming and going, which leave a trail of acidity and that medicinal plastic smell nobody likes. The leather is there. As are some floral notes, along with woody and herbal notes. I have a sample of this and will see if opinion changes with another couple wears, but I can't see it becoming likeable with the awful drydown.

This is one of the more interesting MDCIs to talk about - to me it smells like the highest end designer fragrance you could imagine. There is no amber here, so people tend to judge it based on that, rather than the fact that this would be an excellent signature scent if you were needlessly rich. Appx 4 hours longevity on my skin. Scent: 7/10 Overall: 6/10

The name is somewhat misleading, absolutely not a amber centric fragrance. Opens up very green and aromatic, dries down to a very nice : Aromatic/spicy, citrusy, fruity and woody fragrance - very unique to be honest. Comparing this gem to : Millesime Imperial from Creed is an abomination! Worth sampling for sure.

I smell leather as the top and main note. The price tag is enough to make me never seek anything else out by this creator. Making it unreachable financially is possibly the biggest thumbs down there is. I imagine I am paying for ego in this case. No thanks.

I tried a few samples of this and was impressed. The initial opening I'm not fond of but after about 20 minutes I loved it. It seemed to last a long time. If I had enough money to spare I would keep a bottle of this on hand.

This does not smell like it did the first time I tried it out... Which goes to say, you really REALLY need to try something out. For real. My usual regimented process is to decant the vial into a spray bottle (brand new, of course) so that I can spray it on skin. The way the atomiser disperses the perfume makes all the difference in the world -- the spread, the evenness, the minute droplets, all of this MATTERS. Especially if you're going to buy a bottle -- spraying it on is EXACTLY how you will be applying it. Anyway, after I decant the vial into the spray bottle, I try to extract AS MUCH perfume from the recently-emptied vial -- I smear the applicator into my skin, I turn the vial over and try to empty out the dregs onto my skin, I create a weird suction effect with the bottle on my skin. If indeed I don't mind the scent from this application, we progress to stage two. Stage two involves having it sprayed onto somewhere safe and scrubbable, like the wrist. If indeed, one is still smitten, then we progress to the 'live in' phase -- 2 or 3 sprays, on the neck, wrist, elbow nook. I need to live in it, you know? Anyway, I lived in Ambre Topkapi, and what I mostly got was Mont Blanc Individuel. Not a complex scent, no real movement or complexity. I have about 15 or 20 mls left of my bottle which I have decanted into a smaller bottle, and even though I haven't really worn it in 8 or 10 years, I like to have the scent around. I spray it in the air sometimes. It reminds me of my Japan and pre-Japan life. Not that I miss those days, but it's nice to be transported there sometimes... Also reminds me of Original Santal, which reminds me of Lane Crawford, IFC. Anyway, first time around it was much better. That's why we sample and sample vigorously

Opening smells the same as Xmen shower gel (the light blue bottle) albeit a bit more fruity bc of the pineapple note, then dries down into a mossy amber. I'm not a huge fan of moss-dominant base, so take my review with a grain of salt. Whats disappointing is it lasts as long as the shower gel, while costing way more. The only saving grace is its versatility and mass appealing aspect. I'll give it a few more tries to see if it grows on me.

This is too much soapy, lavendar, lily of the valley, grapefruits, musk, and some other meh notes. I remember i have smelled it just like that way before, but last year in nov, i've sniffed it in one of London's shops and surprisingly it smelled quite sweet and fruiti rather than this soapy, but now with another new sample i am smelling soap again! maybe that one in London was an old patch and you know how notes blends and changes overtime! This patch is not for me, too soapy for my taste

A classic, barbershop type of fragrance, definitely masculine. Lavender and cardamom dominate the opening for me. The rest is lost in a clean/leathery/powdery cacophony that (thankfully) fades away pretty quickly.

Don’t get this expecting to pick up on the fruit & citric notes like I did 😫. It’s rather a ‘timeless’ type scent best suited for 40+ crowd. Dull amber- dusty smell. Will update after a couple more wears

Opening blast is very nice but within a minute or so ends up like a cheap synthetic designer frag :( Way overpriced.

This is a very thin powdery scent that contains no hint of amber. Within an hour it's disappeared completely.

This is my favorite MDCI fragrance and it really works well for me. As a lover of floral and woody, this gives me exactly what I want with a little extra nuance. The first 15-20 min are a cold citrus before fading out. Then it moves into a floral bouquet- not one you give to your partner, but one you paint into a still life. Surprisingly, I get a very recognizable rosewood accord too- like a handmade dark wooded conference table with a quality lacquer. The rosewoods starts in the second stage, and persists until the end. Then in its final drydown it’s the same bouquet and rosewood but with some leather and amber. Many people dislike this fragrance, and these are my personal responses: 1. It has a generic composition That’s ok! Not every fragrance has to be unique, complex, and unfamiliar. It’s nice to just smell good, and your scent shouldn’t define your aura but rather compliment and accentuate it. 2. Longevity is poor I’ve seen people say it only lasts 20 min to an hour. Anecdotally, on me it preforms strong, with a nice scent bubble and sillage, until the 4th hour when it seemingly disappears. It remains as a skin scent for another 2-4 hours after that. I’m okay with this. Ive learned it’s better to burn out than to fade away. Although I like when a spray in the morning takes me all the way to bed, it’s a lovely fragrance to have for the time it’s present. Given the lightness of its notes, it’s actually pretty good all things considered. But I’ve noticed MDCI varies greatly with skin chemistry so YMMV 3. It’s not an Amber Who cares?! If you do any research, this is obvious. I do get a slight amber accord in its 3rd and final stage though. I read somewhere that it was named for how its color resembles the same shade of amber as a fine whiskey. I really love this fragrance and I recommend trying it before writing it off because of bad reviews. Just remember, fragrance is a personal thing and it should speak to you. If this does, great! If not, that’s okay too

No one on this website has yet mentioned that massive presence of Dihydromyrcenol in this fragrance, which is the Pierre Bourdon signature found in Cool Water and Green Irish Tweed especially, which then of course trickled down into every other masculine on the market. I took it upon myself to smell undiluted DHM next to this, and it only confirmed my learned suspicion. That said, Ambre Topkapi actually smells like a complete work that has managed to produce a balanced composition, filled with wonderful spices and fougere notes that keeps the DHM in check. Does that justify this fragrance's price, composition, or perhaps its (lack of) creativity? Not necessarily, but it does indicate to me that people are quick to speak in unhelpful general terms without properly investigating what they are smelling. I implore everyone to give this fragrance a try. It is a pronounced fragrance lavish with spices, falling squarely in a groundbreaking paradigm. A variation of a theme? Yes, I am happy to consider it in this way.

This is an unemotional scent. Whereas the rest of the line has plenty of charm, this has none. It’s a vague, synthetic, generic-smelling ‘80s sweaty masculine with lavender and aquatic aspects (something fruit-like). It’s a touch boozy, a touch animal, a touch soapy, but for the most part, it smells like a bargain bin perfume or an outmoded body spray. There’s nothing amber about it; it’s just a sweaty, herbal, fruity, synthetic misstep in an otherwise fine line. Horrid.

Ambre Topkapi is a safe scent with not much power. The initial blast is very nice. Complex, with lots of different notes coming at you at the same time. Fresh, non offensive and refined. However, it is quite weak. Also, on my skin I detect a prominent cumin note. Although cumin is not listed, I can clearly smell it (or it must be an impression of cumin). Well, if it could keep up with the opening, this would get an 8. Now it is a 7. 7/10

Oof, smells like the clear dial liquid soap for washing hands. Really just not good. Always hated that smell growing up. Sillage is very close to the skin, which for something like this, is probably preferred. Not going to spend rehashing other reviewers opinions on price, lack of amber etc. This is a huge miss for me. 5/10

Exceptional citrus opening, a festival of harmonious and heated fruits. The heart is a linear and balanced floral cloud, but already almost imperceptible due to poor performance. It's a great scent, but severely damaged by its incapacity to project beyond a quarter of arm-lenght.

Ambre Topkapi could be a poem if it wasn't perfume . Every time I try this, it's surprising and new. A flawless blend of lavender and pineapple, atop a flower-flavored tea and a soothing touch of musk. But it's way much more complicated than this. Masculine, soothing, gentle.

a classic men’s fougèr. old gentleman with a cigar by the costa del sol. it’s familiar but what sets this apart is the quality few capture it with this level of refinement

Just don't like it. For me combo of amber and fresh, fruity top notes smells sintetic, cheap and unpleasant. I also don't like this combinations in Montale's scents

No amber that I can detect. Then again, I can't detect much after about an hour. Opening is very fresh and green but quickly fades to nothing.

This brand should be priced in the low 100s.. these prices are insane for such performance.

Surprisingly LV's Meteiore is similair to this but less fruity/ambery.
