The Canadian Gentleman

Update a few months in: i am ordering my second bottle this is one of the very best fougeres i have and it is my favorite genres, with around 60 fougere bottles owned. Gorgeous, classy, smooth, vibrant, fresh fougere. Quite an amazing scent! An amazing opening and a very deep, soothing drydown. Utmost ingredient quality. This scent is still blasting on my skin after 12 hours. Very close to Gravitas and Zaharoff Signature pour Homme but at the highest levels of quality

First experience with Canadian Gentleman is a 10/10. I got a beautifully fresh & cool lavender sage, bergamot opening. Followed by a woody scent of fresh balanced cedar & pine. I close my eyes and can picture walking along a secluded forest path, sun shining through the trees kind of feel. A safe, fresh, pleasing scent that I could see most people enjoying. Will be experiencing more works from Meleg Perfumes.

The Canadian Gentleman by Meleg Perfumes reminds me of my childhood hikes through Canadian Forrests. It’s like when the sun breaks after rainfall—bright and uplifting, balanced with an earthy freshness. A wonderful fougère that is sweet, sophisticated, non-offensive, balanced and fresh.

3rd fragrance that I own from Matthew (Meleg Fougère and Golden Gai). The Canadian Gentleman smells rich, complex, fresh. Another superb creation from Matthew!

WAIT FOR THE DRYDOWN! It went from 4 to 9 within 15 minutes

From the brand's website: Top: rosemary, lime, mint, lemon, cardamom Mid: petitgrain, geranium rose, cedar, cypress, lavender, coumarin Base: oakmoss, castoreum, vanilla, vetiver In the opening, I get woodsy-floral mop water, and sweet, spicy tree-sap. 'Mop water' may sound like a deeply unflattering description, but in this case there's something complex and pleasantly intriguing about the way the composition brings together fresh, clean, woodsy and floral notes with an underlying sense of dirtiness that's so smooth it blends seamlessly into the whole. I also get an almost chewy vibe from this - like a chunk of tree pitch cut from an evergreen; cloudy-skinned and pleasantly malleable. After about half an hour, Canadian Gentleman dries down to a smooth cream-powder hybrid on me. Like lathered musk, dirty vanilla talc, and papery cedarwood. As a West Coast Canadian, I feel like Canadian Gentleman evokes the urbane moderation of our cities amidst the earthy, wet greenness of our forests very well. Sadly, while I love the unique, well-balanced opening, fougeres can always be trusted to turn flat and papery on me in record time.

I really enjoy the opening combination of mint and fir. It’s very fresh and naturalistic. As it dries it becomes less distinct, powdery and green in a slightly vegetal way, almost like aloe or cucumber. The spices are on the reserved side for a fougere. I can see the comparison to Invasion Barbare but this doesn’t strike the transcendent balance I find there. I am testing from a sample and it’s possible a better sprayer might give this a bit more oomph that I find lacking. It smells very natural and high quality, a safe choice for any occasion, but ultimately too polite for me personally.

A mint and fir open on me, awesome natural feel in the opening. A bit juicy over the top of the dry woods that come in shortly after. It's a little ambery in the drydown but I wouldn't really push that fact in a description it's more a transparent/watery green and woody with a bit of amber and smoky spice at the side. A potential bottle purchase for my tastes.

Office-safe with BALLS. How'd ya do it Matt? This frag is so enjoyable to the wearer & all those around. Hard to define but the delicious, cool, green "wet" with the subtlest sense of mint & pine is intriguing. Mint, eucalyptus, tea-tree, rosemary & pine are some of the hardest ingredients to use without them becoming loud-zesty, mono-note, freshies. Not that there's anything wrong with such a juice when that occasion calls, but CG avoids this as avowedly intended, rendering the pine & mint to an almost gourmand nuance. There's just something almost 'edible' about this frag. Is there a trace of patchouli/chocolate lurking here ? ...........from Vienna 1900 ? The real star in the heart is the smoky, dry-earthy balance to all the sweet aspects that gives it a deep & 'proper frag edge'. Yet it's so non-confronting. Safe without being boring. Such a pleaser. While civet isn't listed; is it in there ? ......is Civet Cat Chypre trickled in the base ? Accordingly. something slightly anamalic, is oh so gently mixed in. It's this hinted dusky-dryness & the incense-smoke, coupled with actual projection & longevity; remember those things? underpinning all the fresh, clean green, coolness that closes the deal.
