Ocean Leather

I love this stuff. But I can understand why some in "fragcomm" will be underwhelmed. Is it ground-breaking? No. Is it beast mode intrusive in your face? No. But what it is, is a really well executed and slightly unique take on a theme that's been done to death, but that's no reason to knock it. I look at citrus-focused fragrances like this to be kind of like a modern version of a standard jazz tune. It may not be the first and there are many other similar renditions, but everyone is going to have one in particular that speaks to them more deeply than the others. Also worth mentioning, I don't find this "oceanic" or "aquatic" at all, which is actually a good thing, but not sure why they went with the oceans/cetacean motif. Note that the whale depicted on the bottle is a humpback, not a sperm whale, so it's not an allusion to ambergris, which is not at all present. I can't help but think that the power of suggestion is making some other reviewers perceive this is aquatic. I respectfully disagree on that point. One of the reasons why this is such a great formulation is that it walks the line of being pleasing to others near you (my wife said she like it, which is not a common occurrence), while being interesting enough to hold your attention throughout the day without growing boring and satisfying my personal desire to experience and express something a little out of the ordinary (mostly from that weirdly, oddly enjoyable, uniquely Memo leather note). Longevity is great for this type of citrus scent and it's buoyed by a toned down dose of the signature Memo leather note, compared to others in the line, which gives it a unique character and helps carry the citrus way beyond the point where most other citruses fade. And the citrus itself is up my alley too because it's not screechy and features more mid-tones which come off as more mature (probably has something to do with the added basil and sage). As with all Memo fragrances, price is an issue, but if you're like me and this strikes a particular note, then the calculus is less important since you can't compare apples to apples with other fragrances. And because this is fairly strong for a citrus, you don't have to use as much, so keep that in mind when thinking about cost. Also, I've purchased two other Memo fragrances (Italian Leather and Irish Leather) on the grey marked at about 65% of retail, so once this one hits the secondary market, this will be at the top of my FB purchase list.

I was gifted this masterpiece over the holidays and I shamefully accepted this quite underwhelmingly. My lady bought this for me on a final sale from a boutique. Previous to this, I had tried this at a Neimans and while I thought it was nice, it didnt seem unique enough to consider paying for myself, especially since my first impressions reminded me much of ADG Profumo which I already had and was happy with at half the cost. After having the opportunity of wearing this for some time now though, I can safely put away any fears I have for a potential future discontinuation of Profumo. While I love the marine burst I get from the open in Profumo, the Incense/Smokiness was always a bit peculiar to me and the dry down was never as impressive to me. Ocean Leather takes the qualities I love that remind me of Profumo and replaces the parts that I didnt care about (Incense) with a medley of other notes that imo make this more well rounded, smoother, deeper and much more satisfying. Scent wise, Ocean Leather is much more preferable from opening through dry down. Performance is the area where I wish Memo was a little better, especially given the pricetag. Projection is average at best. While this scent sits closer to the skin, the longevity on skin is respectable. Spraying more, and on fabric boosts the aura. I feel no shame bathing in this juice - it is the furthest thing from cloying, artificial or offensive in any way. Wore this to a holiday party shortly after receiving it..I bathed in it and got a number of questions/compliments.

I respectfully disagree with @JuliaToothFairy on the comparison of Ocean Leather to TF F'ing Fabulous. The two are nothing alike. I own both. FF is spicy; an evening fragrance. OL is smooth, citric, and the leather is barely detectable; a daytime freshie. Despite the fact that "leather" is in its name, if you're looking for a leather fragrance, this isn't it. The orange accord is what comes through the most. The leather seems meant to tamper down the acidity of the orange rather than stand out on its own -- an accessory instead of a centerpiece. I won't pretend to have the most sophisticated nose, but I don't notice any of the other notes. To me, though, that's a tribute to how well blended OL is. The Memo rep at Neiman Marcus said this is Memo's "safest" leather fragrance. So it's meant to be more mass appealing than niche. For me, personally, I love Ocean Leather. In Memo's lineup, it and Winter Palace are two of the best for guys. Sure, Ocean Leather is not in the same genre as Ombre Leather, FF, or, for that matter, any of Memo's other leather offerings, but as a citric fragrance, it's very pleasing. I purchased a bottle and then unintentionally forgot about it among all my other colognes, but I recently rediscovered it, as I've been on the hunt for a strong performing spring/summer frag. Not yet sure on the performance since I've only worn it out a few times, but its scent is fantastic, well-conceived and blended, and perfectly suited for the coming warm seasons.

My first niche, and a fairly expensive one to start with. I ran my nose over dozens of other niche that day, yet nothing pleased me more than this whale. Most reviews conclude that there is no ocean / aquatic vibes - which is true, and a lot of reviews state there is little / no leather - I disagree. Mandarin and basil are very dominant on the initial spray, but once it dries down a little, it is such a rich lush citrus scent, with the basil being supported now by violet and the sage note. Underlying all of this, is the subtle leather accord. It is there, but very subtle, and I like that. It is a mandarin, basil and leather masterpiece. The balance of notes is so classy, rich and enticing. Bottle and packaging are first class. A little over priced. Atomiser is average - have had a few splutters. I wear 3 sprays and lasts most of the day but is likely closer to a skin scent. 5 sprays is too much. Looking to buy a couple more Memo too. Will restock. EDIT: I have come back a year later, to say that this is still my favourite scent in my collection. It’s is so versatile, all times of day and weather. Few perfumes, like this, get better the more you smell them. My issues with the sprayer were short lived by the way, and in context, I now don’t consider this perfume expensive - there is real value for money in fact. If I could only have one, it would still be this whale. Ocean Leather is utterly beautiful.

I think people who give low ratings to this fragnance either expect an oceanic smell like aqua di gio or a stronger leather smell like ombre leather or the rest of memo's leather line. This is neither. People tend not to like it because its not what they expect. This is more like an evening sea breeze you would feel walking near the coast in the Mediterranean, mixed with citrus coming from the near gardens. The subtle but characteristic leather gives the vibe of a leather jacket you took because its one of those chill spring evenings. Its a very versatile, sexy, and unique fragnance in my opinion. And its nothing like Acqua di gio

I actually received this as a sample - along with a different fragrance that I purchased. The only memo I had tried prior to this was African leather, which although good, I felt resembled lair du desert. When I sprayed the sample, my expectations were low. I was very surprised and delighted to find that the fragrance was super pleasing. Nothing leathery about it - just a really nice natural summer scent with a hit of non earthy vetiver. I don’t think it resembles aqua di gio. Everyone has their go-to summer scents, and I’m really pleased that I’ve find mine. 8/10

In my humble opinion Ocean leather is Devine. I find the citrus oceanic vibe layered atop leather alluring and addictive. Imagine sitting in your comfortable leather seats headed to your beach destination with a fruit salad and your quite partial to citrus Before you arrive you start to pickup that ocean vibe and that ocean freshness combined with your citrus fruit salad comprise. In the back ground you find that warm soft sun heated leather Just perfect....

Very aromatic. Strong citrus and aquatic spice in the opening. Really well blended and easy to wear. It's a nice twist on aquatic freshies. I'm not as familiar with the ADG DNA, so can't speak to Ocean Leather's comparison. This feels fizzy and gingery and citrusy. Dries down to a more subtle version of its top notes and mellows out. I don't get much leather, which is fine by me. I don't like leather notes. Great for spring and summer. Really energizing.

It is your skin after an invigorating swim in the ocean. This perfume is far from your average fresh spray. At first glance, one might expect an overpowering aquatic fragrance, but Ocean Leather Memo proves to be much more than that. The initial spritz may not fully encompass its depth, requiring a moment to settle and develop on the skin. Subtle, salty aura that is both intimate and intriguing. This scent transport you to the ocean.

A gorgeous gorgeous release from Memo Paris, well blended and refined though the sage note is slightly prominent , it is a great summer fragrance and an uplifting one, IMO it should not be compared with any other perfume particularly from the designers' releases , being sharing the same genre does not mean cloning each other, Memo perfumes have their stories to tell and their inspirations. I have it and I am enjoying it.

I wrote about this long ago. Initially underwhelmed because this reminded me of ADG Profumo. I appreciate and love Profumo but this is a definite step up in class and quality. I absolutely love this stuff. The scent is satisfyingly fresh yet smooth. This is one of the few scents I could overspray and get away with it. Highly recommend and yes, I agree this is massively underrated.

Very nice smelling fragrance. I mainly get citrus and leather on this one. The leather note is fantastic, actual good smelling leather like a new belt mixed with citruses. The biggest downside of this is the performance, it really doesn't last. 7/10 - 10/10 if it lasted more than 3 hours.

If you asked me what a whale smells like, I'd say it smells like the Ocean Leather Memo Paris perfume. This fragrance is perfect for my summer - it opens with bright citruses and fresh spiciness of basil, salt and seawater.

Huge huge similarities with Acqua di Gio Profumo, it smells really really good tho. The best spring-summer fragrance of Memo imo.

Smells great but this to me smells exactly like ADG Profumo without the incensey note. Not bad but maybe not worth the premium.

Beautiful, lightly sweet and cosy. It does resemble a lovely summer day by the seacoast, and definitely not the beach.

Indeed it smells like an ocean from the beginning to the end but I can't quite get the leather note.

This is the weakest fragrance I've ever worn. I usually write my "reviews" at least 8 hours after I've applied the fragrance I'm talking about, this time I'm doing it barely 3 hours in because it's already completely gone. From the moment I sprayed it I had a really hard time smelling this at all and so did other people. I purposely stood close to my mom (less than 3 feet) for around a minute and she said nothing, only until we were in the car and a strong wind hit us did she say what I was wearing smelled nice (which I agree). Sillage is basically nonexistent and so is projection. Longevity is horrible, being completely gone off my skin in less than 3 hours. This is the first time I've ever rated a fragrance anything below "moderate" for both longevity and sillage. I suppose a fragrance like this also has its uses, it's definitely good for the office or for people who don't like even moderately strong fragrances, but then the price becomes a big issue for what you're getting. I don't rule out this just being a skin chemistry issue though, it might perform "normally" on others. Horrible performance aside, it is a great fragrance but this only amplifies how much of a disappointment the performance is. What you get here is a clean, slightly soapy and salty, and aquatic fragrance with basil and a touch of citrus. It is Acqua di Gio-ish but I don't have too much experience with that line to really say how similar it is. What I can say is I really appreciate this not having calone like ADGs, or at least it has it in a far, far smaller concentration as I couldn't really pick up any in here. Excellent scent being heavily affected by poor performance.

Not one I thought I would enjoy, as I generally don't care for aquatic aromachemicals, but Memo Ocean Leather's blend feels very balanced. There's no animal bite in the leather and no seaweed funk in the ocean. I get a warm/cool juxtaposition with delicate spices supporting soft suede and a hint of calone (or something similar) contributing a breezy edge, before fading into a very pleasant faintly floral dry down - surprisingly free of prominent ambergris/ambroxan. AdG and all of his flankers place their pool-watery aquatic accords much higher in the blend and also partake of some particularly annoying synthetic 'ambery woods' - I find none of that here. As for versatility, I could not wear OL in high heat, and it's not forceful enough to push out in deep cold, so mild Spring evenings and Autumn days would suit best, IMO. Definitely uncertain about the value of a full bottle at retail, but discounters rarely let one down.

I was lucky enough to get a free sample of this at a store. Smells like a niche aqua di gio profondo with more oceanic calone and brighter citrus. The opening presents a sparklingly refreshing cool and slightly spicy mandarin and basilic combination with a salty accord. The saltiness of this fragrance makes me think of dolce and gabbanna light blue eau intense I don't get many of the notes listed, including sage which I hate in YSL Y EDP. The leather is discrete in this. A perfect masculin scent for summer, but I'm sure women can enjoy wearing it too. The longevity seems quite good with the leather backbone. I can't comment on the longevity in the heat though.

Mandarine, mandarine, mandarine! I don't find it overly aquatic, it is not one of those 1990s calone bombs. The effect is more "airy mineral". There is a ginger fresh spicy heat going on. The leather note is faint in the sillage, but more present on my skin and clothes. The citrus-mineral-vetiver combo does remind me a bit of Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraîche, but Ocean Leather lasts far much longer and with a good projection. So overall because of the citrus it would make a great summer fragrance. And because there is more going on than in your overage eau fraîche (+ lasting power), OL makes a great office/daytime scent. Casual elegance.

I firmly believe Ocean Leather was created with the "office-safe" aesthetic in mind. It tries to do a lot, but ends up being fairly average in every category. While every note is discernible, from the citrus to the leather and the blue aspect, they are tuned down to the point where nothing truly stands out. Paradoxically, this is exactly what makes it an interesting office fragrance. It isn’t boring, but it is incredibly safe for work. That being said, to buy this is to truly love it. For me, the scent is almost too light to justify the high price point without feeling a bit self-conscious.

I really liked this when I tested it. It is citrusy and flowery. It feels like walking through a field with flowers here and there while drinking a light lemonade. I wanted to buy this fragrance but when my dad smelled this, he said, the violet is giving a feminine vibe. But the citrus notes balance it out perfectly, making this an actual unisex fragrance. 6/10

8.25/10 smooth clean smell almost smells like a bar of soap but slighly oceanic. super nice but a bit too subtle for me I think. smells like the lobby of a resort by the ocean would smell like so it's nice but pretty boring considering how expensive this thing is brah

It’s quite interesting. Fresh and slightly salty. I feel like aquatic notes could be a bit for elegant here but still pretty nice. It also has some freshness from citruses as well as some green notes. Leans slightly more masculine, but not too much. My ig: scent.guide

Did not blow me away at first sniff. A very safe "summer" fragrance that you feel like you've smelt before. Like not Love - does not seem to substantiate the price tag.

One of the best MEMO leathers, a nice take on fresh leather scent I can see that people find it boring, but to me the smell is quite unique

A good summer fragrance, but there's nothing unique about it, it smells like many other scents available for a much lower price.

I blind bought it and it is mid however it is expensive for the sillage and the lastening of it just dont buy it.

The scent profile isn’t unfamiliar to me; there are many perfumes with a similar character. Still, it manages to feel distinctive among them. The blend is high quality and genuinely different. It combines the bitter, acidic zest of citrus peels with a salty ocean breeze, intertwined with the green, aromatic nuances of sage and basil. I don’t perceive the leather note clearly; at best, it appears very faintly in the background when smelled carefully. While the fragrance leans slightly masculine at first, it becomes calmer and more floral as it dries down, evolving into a more unisex character. It is truly different and unconventional, yet there are also more affordable fragrances with a comparable profile. Projection and longevity are not particularly impressive, but considering its citrusy, fresh, and salty marine nature, I didn’t expect powerhouse performance anyway. It feels more suitable for men and works especially well in spring and summer. Comfortable and easy to wear, it’s appropriate for daily use, the office, and casual dates. It may not be signature-worthy, but it certainly does the job when expectations are set realistically.

It’s an aromatic & fresh spicy fragrance. It is quite unusual. Somewhat salty in the opening, It dries down to a very green, herbaceous scent. Having ‘ocean’ in its name, one would expect it to have aquatic or marine notes, but it is the herbaceous smell that makes it smell like ocean winds carrying the smell of vegetation in and around the ocean. There’s a touch of leather in the base of the fragrance, but you can only pick it out if you try to look for it. The blend is very good, and the scent itself is very unisex, anyone can pull it off. I don’t get the comparisons to ADG, to be honest. It works in almost every weather, with the exception of very cold winter. It is very wearable in any occasion, be it formal or on dates. However, the projection on this sucks, the longevity is okay (5ish hours at best). Using it regularly, the scent gets real boring real quick. Also, another drawback is that the older bottles are painted so it’s impossible to see the juice levels, which kinda sucks. Liked it a lot better when I first got it, but the more I’ve used it, the more I’ve gotten bored and somewhat annoyed of it. Overall meh. 4.5/10.

It's from the Cuir Nomades line, but reviews suggested that this is summer appropriate, so I threw some on before I left for a walk. Opens with a huge blast of mandarin, then a piney cedar-y thing and it dries down into a not very leather-y base. i'm not sure why 'Ocean' is in the name. It's clean, but not ocean-y. it's fine, don't regret paying for the sample, but won't be buying a full bottle.

Smooth blend with more basic clean notes in a unique way. Slightly spiced, but not offensive. Not a safe blind buy due to barely smelling it on me after 30min of 9 sprays. Not sure if it is creating a scent cloud for others to experience. Great for work or even low fragrance situation since it seems to disappear into a slight salty note. The bottle/package is beautiful!

I do not like the opening at all. It's very mineral. But once that's gone, it's pretty nice. It's not that similar to Profumo because the incense in Profumo makes it stand out between them, but this is in the general area in terms of smell. This is a bit boring for me and I would prefer ADG - Profondo (which I already own) over this.

Fresh green, post shower nature foresty vibes - similar emotional take as Roja Elysium Intense but a bit dialed down to a generic scent. Herbal, grassy - sprayed and enjoyed the sample for a day out, but wouldn't buy a full bottle I liked it, but not loved or addicted to it.

6/10. Sometimes this was amazing- a leather that was wearable and unique (actually the only leather that I felt was feminine enough to wear). The ocean added a freshness that worked. Sometimes it smelled like hairspray.

It's a fresh and pleasant aquatic with a leathery touch. It does have that familiar fresh dna so it's nothing unique, but it smells very natural and nothing synthetic about it like the other familiar fresh designers.

Bla bla bla . It’s an AdG Profumo tripled in price with an artistic bottle . Poor longevity $300 USD for 75 ml? Really ?!

All about vetiver. Very ligh, other notes hardly noticable. If You like vetivet there are better scents of this type.

A fresh, green, and very pleasant fragrance, but the performance is absolutely terrible.

This fragrance just hurts me the most. I love this parfume! It really give me this ocean salty smell like vibe which i love. This is the best aquatic fragrance i have ever smelled but.....the longevity and the projection just kills the parfume. Once i sprayed it one me like 8-10 times and i asked my friend if he can smell it and he said no. Its been 20 min since i sprayed it and he cant detect it. Its so sad that i cant really enjoy this fragrance to the fullest. Save your money for something different. If the Memo company reads this i hope the reformulate it or just make it project more idk. Amazing scent but nothing kills a parfume like bad performance.

In a very short time i have witnessed re birth and transformation of designer aquatics. First its Accento by Xerjoff which is light blue, and now Ocean Leather, reincarnation of of Aqua di Gio. And i prob will end review here. High quality, super pimped out Aqua di Gio. Dissapointment.
