It is the emotion that ceases to live and becomes memory, even a dark one, yet still remains. A captivating, elegant, melancholic, and deeply evocative interpretation of violet. This is not the romantic or overly delicate violet typical of classical perfumery, but an austere and resilient flower that pierces through frozen earth. The opening is green, crisp, and slightly boozy. Blackcurrant (cassis) brings a vegetal and damp facet, reminiscent of sap and cold dew, while cognac gently warms the flower. At the heart, its abstract elegance emerges. Violet merges with iris, creating the expected powdery accord, yet the presence of other white and yellow flowers prevents the fragrance from becoming dusty in a “grandmother’s face powder” sort of way. Sharp violet fills the room. Not just the beautiful spring flowers, but all of it - the stems, the leaves, and the petals. It’s as though you can feel it growing in some weird technicolor time-lapse dream that captures all your senses at once. Within moments a soft powderiness appears, only to be met by a crisp vegetal green note. They tug at each other, competing but neither fully succumbing to the other. Instead they dance along in some kind of two-step until finally falling together, coaxing out the iris as they lie, curled at the feet of what’s now become a full floral ensemble. What felt loud and bright now feels soft, warm and delicately sweet, not saccharin but the subtly honeyed earthy sweetness you might find in the nectar of a honeysuckle stamen. This is where it stays for most of the wear, vibrant and alive, before retreating the same way it emerged, slipping back into the earth as its last traces turn to dust, ready to be reclaimed by moss.

Dark purple violets... For the first time in my life, I’ve genuinely fallen for a violet fragrance. I approached this one with strong prejudice, and it ended in love. Iris–violet combinations have usually been a meh category for me, but this is something else entirely. It has depth, mossy, earthy facets that make it incredibly compelling. The scent oscillates between a perfectly refined lipstick-like accord and a shadowy, dark-soiled violet garden. Despite its depth, there are moments where it gently warms up; I found myself checking the notes and suspecting cognac as the source of that subtle warmth. Even so, these warmer elements act only as quiet support; the star remains the dark, powdery violet throughout. Additionally, hidden floral elements add complexity without lightening the mood. I've recently been pulled into the Iris/Violet direction and I #cantstopwontstop. Started with Chanel #19 Poudre, Pierre de Lune by Armani, then L'Eau D'Hiver by Frederic Malle and Lipstick Rose by the same house. And all of them are absolutely lovely. However, I recently met up with my local Chicago Fragrance group and we went into a local apothecary and I got a sniff of this fragrance and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Do I have more Iris/Violet fragrances than I need? Yes. Do I need another one? Yes, I do, which is why I bought a 9ml (too expensive to purchase the full size at this time). This perfume is so beautiful. It's like a soft, but strong, symphony on the skin. It smells expensive, yet feminine and utterly captivating. This is something I would wear on a date or even to work. Stunning fragrance with moderate sillage, decent projection and maybe about 4-5 hours of longevity.

A sophisticated blend of violet and iris, and one I instantly connected with as a violet lover. Viole Nere feels deeply refined, with a vintage elegance that reminds me a little of Opus III by Amouage... though, to me, this one feels even more beautiful and emotionally textured. There’s an earthy, mossy greenness running underneath the florals that gives the fragrance remarkable depth. Oakmoss, incense, cognac, and dusty woods soften the powdery violet and iris, creating something cold, shadowy, and quietly mysterious. The resinous notes unfold like incense lingering in the velvet curtains of an old theater. Indeed, it evokes a classic lipstick-and-violet aroma, yet it's grounded in rich earth, moss, and a touch of incense rather than a sugary fragrance. Cold, elegant, dark, and mysterious... with excellent longevity and a beautiful, lingering trail 💜✨

I sampled this fragrance on holiday in HB Roma after the shop man overheard me boasting to my husband that there was nothing more powdery than Frederic malle. There is, he said and took me to Viole Nere where he sprayed some on my hand. We got about 500 yards up the road and half way across busy streets when I said 'we have to go back' and I had to have it as a Christmas present. It is my most prized scent and there's a booklet and poem in the box in Italian and English. I cant do it justice and don't know the science or the notes but it is simultaneously familiar and unlike anything else I've tried or own. Sweet without being sickly, fresh without being lemony, sombre without being mournful. My husband says I should wear it always while it is fresh but I feel like I want to treasure every spray.

Beautiful violet fragrance! First impression is green and floral, a bit powdery too. Very sophisticated all in all, and more poetic than most of the violet fragrances. On my skin it doesnt fill the room but it is beautifully around me like a big scarf. Very comforting. The initial retro vibe fades away within an hour, and it turns darker, a bit smoky, but definitely earthier. This is a great development for me. Lasting power is quite strong, I can detect the fragrance for quite long hours after the first spray. I like a bit of perfume cloud around me, so I tend to refresh the fragrance by an additional dose during the day. If you like violet, earthy, green, powdery, sophisticated perfumes, there is not too much of risk with this beautiful creation.

I've never understood the concept of the "shrinking violet" as almost all violets I've smelled, even candied and sweet, are somehow dark, very cool and mysterious. One of my favorite flowers in perfumery, and the violets in Viole Nere are stunning- calm and deep and warm. River-at-night violets. There's an element in this that I can't place. Sometimes I get a whiff of cat pee and litter? But it's so fleeting that I can't be upset about it. And when I'm in love with this fragrance, I'm really in love. These are winter violets. Regal, elegant, sometimes distant, sometimes soothing. For me wearing this fragrance conjures the image of a dark-haired queen, with a long and solemn face, and deep, very dark eyes.

Viole Nere is a detached dusty, cold violet with a somewhat leathery undertone, but it isn't heavy. I'm assuming the leathery dustiness is coming from the vetiver, and if that's the case I'll have to stop dissing on vetiver so much, because I'm really enjoying it here (although I'm sure it's the frankincense and oakmoss speaking, too). There's an underlying sweetness that is faint, but pleasant - likely the vanilla. The other notes are not easy for me to detect, but I can say they are all working together very well. I love Meo Fusciuni's gloomy and poetic vibes. I'm loving Viole Nere, and it's exactly what I was hoping De Profundis by SL would be.

The most objectively beautiful violet/iris perfume i've encountered. I'd noticed my relationship to violet slowly evolving over the past year or so, and Viole Nere sealed the deal. Soft yet complex, that complexity is an unspoken understanding, as she's not ostentatious. One of my favorite aspects of all Meo Fusciuni perfumes is how they blend with the skin, and this one is no exception to that observation. Better yet: spray on a sweater and return to it the next day. Meo speaks of the violets peeking out of the last snow at the beginning of spring. Quiet solitude, a soft hopefulness, is exactly how I'd describe the gentle strength of Viole Nere.

Wow....this is some really good juice. I was sent a sample with purchase. It's stunning. An opulent, full-bodied, pure violet and iris, dry and very strong. Like a lady's boudoir, lipstick, powder, and french lingerie... that's what it reminds of. A little like Moulin Rouge by Histories de Parfum..so very sexy! As it dries down the ylang, sandalwood and musk come forward. It's really really special. I definitely want a full bottle. It is pricey though. So, will be saving up for it. One side NOTE- This could be headache inducing for the sensitive. It's not a gentle perfume.

Oh wow, this is stunning. Viole Nere reminds me of Ombre Mercure in the way it has that dense, almost thick and chewy iris-violet texture. It feels plush and powdery, but with real depth. Oakmoss, patchouli, incense, and woods give the florals a darker, earthier foundation, while the cognac adds warmth and richness. It is elegant, mysterious, and substantial enough to move from day to night in any season. The presentation is beautiful too. The bottle is heavy, the cap is substantial, and the entire experience feels luxurious. My first bottle from this house!

This is very interesting, smells different on paper vs skin. It smells like you're on a tour of a historical plantation or a living history museum. Musty like an old wood cabin. The mix of floral and animalic notes give a very natural like, smell-scape that really evokes a vision. I've gotten compliments just wearing a sample to work. I would say it's very sophisticated and complex compared to a lot of other perfumes. Definitely get a sample before you buy to see how it works with your skin, otherwise a fantastic gothic scent :)

The most beautiful violet I have ever smelled. Cold, delicate, soft, feminine, gothic, and mysterious. The violet is smooth, velvety, and sweet. This fragrance gives me the same atmosphere of Serge Lutens’ L’Orpheline, a favorite of mine. Oakmoss, incense, and cognac is prominent in the background balancing the powderiness of the violet and iris with some depthness and darkness, making it a bit dirty and boozy. This one blooms wonderfully in cold weather.

Fell hard for this. Smells exactly like my favorite person who I lost. Powdery violet. Elegant, mature and slightly melancholic. When I first smelt it I wrote it off as soapy and vintage. Wearing it out is a different story. Wish it wasnt so darn pricey but I’m glad to have found it. My tiny little sample has lasted me a long time. It lasts a long time and projects very well. It’s worth the $ for sure

I have just got one bottle of this masterpiece, as a Meo fan I was ready for a blind buy anyway. Although expected more darkness, unisexness is on the same level as for Encore du Temps but a bit sweeter. I would try out layering with Notturno, which I am not a fan of (yet?). Anyway, high quality, great sillage, it is at least a must try. Now, bring the fancy and abstract reviews on! :-)

I love violet fragrances in general so I was looking forward to sampling Viole Nere. But it ended up absolutely blowing me away. This is now my favorite violet perfume and probably a top 5 fragrance overall, out of many that I have sampled over the years. It’s dark, cold, elegant, refined, sexy, and mysterious. Full bottle worthy.

I agree with the previous review. For me it's very comfortable, calming, peaceful scent. Makes me feel like I'm at a florist, smelling the flowers in a humid air. I would say it's a bit more female leaning but also can imagine myself wearing it on a nice day that I can just go for a walk in nature and stay calm and stress free.

Oh, I wasn’t expecting this. A few reviewers said this was a gothic fragrance so I had been hesitant to purchase. It’s an easy wear but, it’s not Guerlain’s Insolence Violet. It’s definitely unisex but leans feminine. I would consider it fresh and a touch powdery. I’m smitten.

Absolutely gorgeous but not quite sure what's causing the slight animalic tinge. Indolic jasmine, perhaps? I just mention that because it might not be a safe blind buy for some.

Amazing. Take the already wonderful L'Atessa and add a creamy, warm vanilla base, voilà, perfect.

The violet here isn’t airy or overly sweet. It has a noticeable earthy, green, and slightly mossy undertone that gives it weight and depth. At times, it leans into a classic lipstick-like accord, but it doesn’t feel dated. There’s a darker edge running through it that keeps things interesting. It’s a very powdery fragrance, as expected with the iris note. I also pick up a subtle boozy twist in the background that rounds everything out. It doesn’t dominate or shift the composition into gourmand territory; it simply softens the sharper edges and adds balance. The supporting florals add dimension, but they stay in the background and don’t alter the overall character. This is a deep, dark, powdery violet with an earthy base and restrained warmth. I like it because of the added complexity, but fragrances like this can lean slightly too powdery and a bit too mature for my taste.

I didn't like this the first time I tried it. For some reason I was expecting something a bit more green. That is my fault. I have tried it for the second time this evening with the preconceived idea this is going to be powder centric. I'm glad I tried it again because it is actually very well done. I would not consider this a feminine fragrance at all. This is a violet flower that has been kept in the dusty attic. Still Young and fresh, but has also accumulated the embodiment of something left behind. It's quiet. Reflective. Solemn. And intentionally done so. Is this mass appealing? I do not think so. In fact, I find this for introspective purposes only. However, do not interpret that in a negative way. There is real artistry here that requires meditation to appreciate. And those are the fragrances I like most.

If this had come out sooner I would've died. Similar to incarnata, PdP, moulin rouge etc. in that makeup scent... After an initial earthiness it dries into a very makeuppy powder that I always find too cloying after a while. Nothing bad to say about the scent tbh. It's nice, I just think I'm done with this particular profile forever. I don't say gothic lightly but imprezzabile is it for me, and for how I interpret it. There has to be something genuinely ugly in it to count, even just a drop... he is adept at balancing these contrasts and creating moody, shadowy, gorgeous atmospheres. Viole nere came too late for me but I'd recommend this to someone looking for a darker makeup profile. Makes me pine for l'oblio even more :)

Viole Nere by Meo Fusciuni opens with iris in all its powdery glory, before the atmosphere shifts, like a swing band playing through an old gramophone. Resinous tones and fluttering violet florals weave together with dusty woods, giving the composition a nostalgic, almost sepia tone texture. The tune plays minor key, underscored by drifting waves of indolic (slightly animalic) jasmine. I do think it leans a little feminine on me and even though I enjoy the artistry, I know myself well enough to know I'd never wear this in public. I'd like to come back to this at some point

Mossy, earthy, woody - with a hint of violet. That's what I get. On my skin, it settles into a skin like scent, not overpowering at all. I like how everything is blended and it feels very natural. I enjoy the fragrance but it is simply just not for me. If you want violets that are not overly sweet and that feels elevated, then, this is for you.

On my skin, I get a huge powdery iris, a-la Hermes Hiris. Then there's some slight earthy bitterness (violet? moss?), but it stays mostly iris-y. Comforting, luxurious... iris, but I don't get what would distinguish it from Hermes's. Still, a good one.

This is a woody incency slighty medicinal violet. It's beautiful, although I prefer warmer violets.

I was really looking forward to trying this fragrance but it is a disappointment for me. When it is first sprayed it smells like violet heaven but that feeling doesn't last long. It becomes a dry mossy iris bomb in like 5 minutes. It smells like others I've smelled before except maybe a bit more of the forest floor mosses and lichen clinging to the irises. I wish this was the dark violet soliflore that I have been dreaming of but sadly it turns to iris instead and as we know good iris fragrances are easy to find but dark violets stay hidden in this one. To much work searching for them. I want them larger than life, not over run by irises and a bit to much unexpected vanilla. Will wear the sample but not FB worthy for me. Edit: Jean Patou 1000 gives me the dark violet I crave. Does the violet have to share the spot light with geranium, osmanthus, jasmine and rose, yes but 1000 has dark and brooding violet that darkens the other florals. She turns them biting and cruel. Maybe because of love lost. Mournful, dark brooding days.

It has a strong anomalic note from the first spray which comes and goes on the dry-down, otherwise a powdery dark floral. Sadly animalic scents dont work for me because all i can smell every time is a musty weasel nest, but if you dont have this problem with animalic scents I think it would fit lovely on a goth person

It is a very intimate, soft perfume. Nice but nothing exceptional and on my skin I can only smell it when I put my nose close to it. Its not for me. Maybe it's mainly musk based and I sometimes can't smell musky perfumes. EDIT: in a deep drydown it reminds me a very soft version of Grey Flannel

scary. but maybe that’s because i’m used to more inviting perfumes. this freaks me out. it feels like i am hugging a relative i dislike or fear. or like someone is right behind me. it really puts me on edge. old woman type smell. floral for sure, little musk. but it’s stressing me out.

I thought I would really like this one from all the notes listed, but it just smells like sickeningly sweet baby powder to me.

While I was sniffing out some very specific choices at a perfume shop I frequent, my salesman eagerly handed me a scent strip and I quickly took it to be polite, gave it a quick sniff and kept right on shopping... 20 seconds later I was like "wait a min..." And sniffed it again... And again... Then I grabbed the tester and tried a bit on... I loved it and was struck with... "I own something really similar to this.." and it's Iris 39 by Le Labo.... I almost hate to mention it cuz so many frag heads hate on them (I understand why) but Iris 39 is REALLY good... It's not a typical iris... It's really green and earthy (just like this) and a bit animalic as it dries (just like this)... They are both very irisy but this one has more prominent violet and... I have to say... One of the ONLY masculine violets I can think of (Hermès Violette Volynka is pretty good but this one is even more manly in my opinion)... I really can't wait to go try it one more time before (likely) buying a bottle.... UPDATE: while I still think this fragrance is REALLY good, I've given it side-by-side as well as back to back wearings with Iris 39 and, I'm surprised to say, the Le Labo is the clear winner...

Viole Nere smells exquisite, yet its beauty hides a darker undertone. Lilianne Moreau has been dead for fifty years, but her gown still hangs in the room. For those of us that are always on the hunt for another violet perfume that includes not only a pretty, sweet violet more floral than candy, and maybe almond, woody notes of our current favorites but also something *new* - Viole Nere isn’t it. I like the opening a lot, and actually don’t mind the LotV at first however the watery green murky quality of the lily with ‘mosses’ quickly overtakes the violet. This is very unisex, musty more than musky, a very green floral arrangement but given the name I wanted rich, dark violets. It is a ‘dark’ perfume in mood, a very moody and mossy dank scent. But also very, very green and watery green like practically vegetal. The greenness, and dank moss has a vintage feel to it, and this all fits together nicely in theme. It just isn’t the sweet, sexy violet I hoped for.

Viole Nere from Meo Fuschiuni is a wistful Rilke poem of a violet. I will say I really love violet, though most I’ve encountered smell very similar, dainty, and delicate in either a powdery or an earthy spring rain-way. Viole Nere, while similarly subtle, presents differently than those nostalgic candied pastilles or small, damp purple blooms. It’s the gossamer violet bruised and thrumming ache of never-quite-becomings, the bittersweet vetiver musk of breathless possibilities half-glimpsed, the gentle, mossy patchoulied decay of late autumn’s dying reminder that things unlived also have their season, their own quiet beauty. A melancholic wisp of frankincense dissipates like phantom ink on pages no one will ever read, a yearning ode to an elusive beloved who never arrived, who was lost from the start.

In February, even in the depths of the cold winter, there are times when you can suddenly sense the first signs of spring. Walking into the woods in the crisp air and clear blue sky, searching for signs of spring's arrival, I feel a sense of exhilaration when I find violets blooming hidden beneath the broadleaf trees. The feeling of being connected to the workings of nature—I feel as if that sensation has been captured in a fragrance. The cold air, the moss-covered ground and tree trunks, the dry resin, the fallen leaves returning to the soil, the green of new buds, and the scent of violets. For me, it's not a dark image at all, but rather a serene gentleness.

This arrived today from Italy and I am so excited to have it because it’s not available in Australia yet. It is exactly what I hoped, and pretty much as the box says- dark, brooding violet. There is a bit of deep greenness at the beginning which does not become dank. Then it becomes slightly powdery, but never goes into talcum powder land, or sweet parma violets. It feels like a very dark purple velvet cloak, heavy, smooth and majestic. It’s suitable for all, and lasts ages. Sillage is moderate. I would say it’s evening or cool weather wear- when you want to feel glamorous but introspective!

A gorgeous and velvety gothic beauty. These are the words that come to my mind. It’s intoxicatingly good. Even my wife loves it and she doesn’t usually like my gothic fragrances. It’s beautiful violets and iris and I wouldn’t even necessarily call it powdery—just a rich Iris that holds hands with the violet so beautifully so. After about a week of wearing this, it’s already one of my favorites. Just so wonderfully made. You can really appreciate the depth of the artist who made it. I hope it never gets discontinued because it’s just so gorgeous.

Oh this one is so nice. What a beautiful scent. It's the entire violet, being planted in a cold greenhouse, the leaf, the flower, the roots and damp dirt, with cold air blowing in through the cracks in early spring. Then retiring to a cozy room, to sit by the fire. It's a dark violet/iris- not a bright light one. It didn't read powdery or lipsticky on me and lingered for several hours, while it softened overtime. There are no cozy- gourmand notes in this what so ever, the vanilla is not sweet. I'll be buying this one for sure.

Tested only briefly at store (on paper), so my review will be poor. As expected, quite violet, and irisy, Meo Fusciuni-style. Quite woody, in a quite complex way, which can be typical for Giuseppe. Perhaps not his most complex though. Quite versatile. Leans feminine. My impression is quite good, but not fantastic. I’m not the right person for this one. You have to like the idea of violet/iris.

I was hoping this would make me feel like a vampire, but my first thought was pure, unadulterated LIPSTICK. I see what other reviewers are saying about its dark, mossy heart. It’s powdery and pretty, but it has secrets. The longer it sits on my skin, the more indescribable it becomes. A strange combo of familiar and mysterious. I feel like I couldn’t pull it off, but Lana Del Rey could.

Wow Vintage in a bottle. What elegant old perfumes would smell like, what old cosmetics in fancy beautiful compacts and packaging would smell like. Feminine and classy . Powdery. I feel like im in any theather backstage with all the ladies getting ready with motherpearl hair brushes, and perfume bottles with pumps and faethers and old black and white photos everywhere.

Though not really a fan of the violet note (probably burnt-out from scary violet chewing gum), I feel the combination with the root-y iris makes a great duo. Beautifully blended like many of his scents. I don't find them casual per se, but more thought out than that. Was fun to get many samples from this line to check out.

A soft unisex woody-floral-musk like many others. This one distinguishes itself in the opening with its’ namesake violet ionones along with cool iris and a zing of olibanum. The rest is ok, eventually smelling like clean and dapper Italian muschio. There are several more interesting ones in this line. 3 out of 5.

This is an every season, every occasion wear to me. It smells both cosmetic and earthy. It's not somber, but still emotionally evocative, true to the rest of the Meo line. The supporting notes to the violet and Iris have their own seamless earthiness, but lend a surprising effervescence. God I love this perfume.
