Black Leather by Honorine Blanc

After my recent experience with Azzaro Naughty Leather, I decided to try another designer with a leather scent offering. I choose Black Leather from the Mercedes VIP Club Series because it has been designed by one of my preferred perfumists, Honorine Blanc. Honorine designed Tom Ford Noir Anthracite for men and some feminine gems like La Nuit Trésor à la Folie, Viva La Juicy Gold as well the original, and several Opium flankers. There is some traditional sweetness associated to her works and, in my opinion, excessive sweet notes don't get along well with leathery scents. Another Honorine work signature is the way she deals with amber and incense and that is a must in any leathery fragrance as far as I am concerned. The fragrance opens very floral with a strong Iris note, although not lipsticky. The heart grants us a very nice frankincense blended with earthy patchouli. Actually I look (sniff?) at it with impatience for what's to come. In the base we scent the leather coming to life, very well supported by a strong leather/amber note (must be the labdanum on top of the leather and the amber) and another kind of sweet amber together with the remaining incense. The scent is never pungent positioning this perfume in a very western position and making it very easy to wear. That is a plus when you compare Black Leather with several other mainstream leather fragrances, including Naughty Leather. It's also miles away from more strong and oriental hyped leather perfumes like Tuscan Leather, Leather Oudh and La Yuqawam. It's a very polite leather scent that you can use even if you are socializing with leather scent haters. It may be a very good choice if you are into leather scents but also want to buy a "pleases everybody" fragrance. There are no similarities with Azzaro Naughty Leather. Recommended? No, Not different enough from mainstream leather/tobacco/amber fragrances, in my opinion. Try it first. Blind buy worthy? No.

A fresh leather fragrance with a bit of a tropical fruit note at the top, similar to that found in D&G The One. Black Leather isn't a deep, dark, and dirty leather fragrance. There are no animalic aspects despite what the "Main Accords" chart above suggests. This is a clean designer leather, similar to that of a new black leather jacket, and resembling the leather note found in John Varvatos original. Beneath everything is a subtle incense which lends a smoky hazy to the entire compositions, but it's restrained, and isn't an in-your-face kind of smokiness that dominates the scent. Black Leather is a nice choice for work, dates, or casual evenings. Since it's sort of light and fresh as far as leathers are concerned, it's easy to wear indoors and in close quarters. Projection is average and longevity is about 8 hours with decent projection for the first four. Overall, this edition to the Mercedes VIP line deserves a thumbs up. While it's not particularly original or bold, it's an easy wear and smells very pleasant, presenting an accessible leather fragrance for men that can be pretty much worn whenever and wherever. As with Varvatos, I enjoy the pairing of a kind of sweet tropical note over leather. It offers an interesting contrast and adds an upbeat, youthful quality to the whole. I can see this making a nice gift for a guy who owns a Mercedes. Thumbs up. 8/10 UPDATE: I've worn this about 5 times since this review and I like it more each time. It's very fresh, but the leather is apparent at all times, and it works great indoors without ever feeling heavy or out of place. It's different too. Other than a vague similarity to Varvatos, I really haven't come across much else that smells like it at all. Just bumped my rating up from 7 out of 10 to 8.

Black Leather by Honorine Blanc Mercedes Benz for men - Now there's a grand name to begin with! This stuff is deeeeeeelightful. How best to paint a picture for the nose? The opening; thick, heavy, pungent. You get the bergamot perfectly mixed with the orris. That suedey parma violets with an ever so slight fruity tartness. As this starts to die down you can definitely smell a drier, only ever so smoky, incense and patchouli. I'm not really getting the sage unless I take deep sniffs and then I think it's just the patchouli and leather. All the while that magnificent amber builds and builds. The leather comes through, yes, but the labdanum which has its own musky, fruity, woody aroma also has a deep amber smell. This is glorious. Very refined, and very different to a lot of fragrances I've tried recently. What is also a big win for me is the longevity. After about 4-5 hours it's passed its peak BUT 12 hours later if you sniff where it was sprayed you can still smell it. Sillage is good as well. One spray, moderate; more than one spray and it's proper heavy. I would love to get my hands on the full range. If the rest are as good as this then I'm a Mercedes fan.

I just picked up a bottle of this as well after sampling it. And completely agree with what BB states below. Black Leather is a very nicely done "airy" fruity/leather/amber scent that is just so lovely smelling and super versatile. Truly a wonderful surprise! For the most part it's pretty linear, but after a little time goes by the resinous labdanum and a tiny bit of incense lingers in the background. I personally don't care for incense/smoky frags in general, but here it's restrained really well and just adds a bit of depth. Also it helps to cut the fruity/sweetness. I dare say this is even more likable and a better option for a all around/year leather scent than the slightly darker smelling Varvatos original, which has been my go to leather scent for many years. Only a couple of full wears so far, but longevity seems to be average. Fantastic release from M.B. and Honorine Blanc!

I agree with the person who said it has a peachy element, only here you get some of the skin as well, which is the strength of the leather (rather weak). I think it should have been called Light Pink Leather, and I hope women will give this one a chance, especially if they like scents such as Rogue. Compared to other recent "leather scents" in this range, I prefer Ferrari's Leather Essence to this one, but that one might not appeal to those who don't like powdery scents. Probably the best "super cheapo" that is a "real" leather is One Man Show Oud Edition (along the lines of TF's Tuscan Leather). I guess this one is a leather scent for those who want to barely smell anything remotely leathery.

This has become a staple in my collection, I wear it all the time. The office, the movies, to bed, around the house, and anytime I want to smell GREAT! I cant express enough the cool-cold weather versatility of this fragrance. The amber note is not as potent as in other fragrances of similar character and it is balanced nicely by the suede/leather and the Patchouli and Bergamot. This in turn, keeps the fragrance light and fresh enough to wear all day long, which it will do thanks to the great performance of this fragrance. Would recommend for all men and even some ladies to have in their collection.

I bought this for two reasons: I LOVE D&G The One- and many said it smells similar, and I also love leather. What a great purchase!!! It does smell like the One, though I can only compare it to The One EDP. This is a lighter version of the One EDP. Drydown is like 85% similar but The One smells like smoke/tobacco + amber, this one smells like new car leather seats + amber. The scent here is similar from initial spray to drydown. Sadly, it does not last like the One. I sprayed both on each hand, the One lasts longer. But I will do more observations. But for now: 9/10 on smell. 50/10 longevity.

I really enjoy this scent and it's unique in my collection. I got the gift set many years ago with deodorant at stick. One of Mercedes-Benz better fragrances and they have some good ones. Scent 10/10 Sillage 6/10 Projection 6/10 Longevity 6/10 Versatilitly 8/10 Packaging/bottle 8/10 Value 8/10 Seasons to wear: All year around.

Very fresh and nice smelling fragrance again from the Mercedes line, those who thought only bentley delivered good ones think again, this is very suprisingly as mentioned not as dark as the bottled indicates it is a pleasant caramel fruity smelling aroma that i have never smelled before, good one for the collection.

I already tried this fragrance twice and twice I regretted not to have bought it in the spot. This fragrance has some magnific notes, very well blended and present us with a performace average to above average. It's the best cologne in the Mercedes perfumists series. I ordered it on line today.

Not a bad scent, but the performance - poor. Projects good about 1 hour, and after 2 hours it becomes a skin scent. Overall: 6.5/10

Not as good as the brand name. I would prefer some niche fragrance from Dubai at this price point.

Without having to repeat what has already been stated I am in agreement with most of the comments here with the exception of my expecting MORE leather & suede. It is there but only if you really look for it. Although I am not totally disappointed with this purchase because it is after all nicely composed, it honestly does not fulfill or satisfy my leather fragrance fetish. I am still searching for the PERFECT leather/suede fragrance. Sadly the only fragrance that has even come a little close is Guess Suede and I mean little as in just barely.

Blind buy this tho Initial spray of black leather is bergamot, but after 20-30 second, it comes amber followed by suede leather type. In the Middle note, i sniff a little bit incense and patchouli but not orris. In the base note u just find amber and powdery note of suede. Sillage is low, Projection is low to moderate, longevity in my skin stayed only 3-4 hours. U can use this frag for signature scent. i've tried to use this for my gym frag, and not cloyed from this. Picked this frag around $35, this is not bad frag IMO 7/10 for overall score

This is very smooth and balanced. Perfect for the office and is signature worthy. It's rather tamed so it won't offend anyone and is versatile. With that being said it's a bit too soft for me too add to the collection. I prefer some bang for my buck such as Bentley Intense or Man In Black. Don't let that deter you from at least sampling it as it's a very crafty scent but not for me.

The name Black Leather made me expect something completely different than it actually is. It's a nice scent and a lot fresher than I expected. After finishing my decant, I'm not going to buy a full bottle. Scent 7.5/10 Performance 7/10

Considered a hidden gem by Mercedes-Benz, I had to look for a while before I was able to find this one. I had heard some within the community say this is one of the best leather fragrances you can own. Being a lover of leather scents, I had to blind buy it and give it a try. Here's how it went; Scent: Opening is clean, leathery, and powdery. Immediately I get a crisp black leather note reminiscent of leather car seats, accented by bursts of bergamot and smooth powder from the suede and orris. Within 5 minutes of wearing, the incense note started to become more noticeable and lended a smokiness to the fragrance. In the dry down it's sweet, leathery, and powdery. The bergamot is gone and the amber and labdanum work in tandem with the leather, suede, and orris to create a sweet and powdery leather scent. The incense remains as well, giving the notes a smokey background to work off. Performance: Initial projection is strong at around 6 feet. Sillage is strong as well, leaving a noticeable scent trail. After a few hours the projection was very light even at 12 inches, but there was still a moderately noticeable scent trail. At around the 8 hour mark, there was no projection or sillage left and it was strictly a skin scent. Altogether the scent lasted on my skin 8-10 hours. When to wear: I feel like this is clean and light enough to be worn all year, day or night. If I were to pick a leather fragrance to wear to the office, this would be the one I choose because it's not an overbearing leather note. I don't really classify this as a date fragrance, though. Blind buy: If you like leather scents this is a safe blind buy for you. Final verdict: This scent is absolutely gorgeous; niche quality. I haven't ever smelled a leather scent quite like this one. It's definitely unlike anything else in my collection, and I have quite a few leather fragrances. I wish the performance was a little better, but with it being such a light and clean scent it makes sense that it wouldn't last forever or project like a beast. If you're looking for a leather scent that can be worn all year round and can even be worn safely at an office, go for this one. Scent: 10/10 Longevity: 7/10 Sillage: 7/10

This is really not bad at all. Smell like Dolce & Gabbana the one + leather = is Mercedes-Benz VIP Club Black Leather for Men!!

Edit 10/28/17 - Black leather ...hmmmm....nowhere anywhere in this scent could even hint or lend an impression of actual Black leather. Truly there is very little to like about this fragrance. So much so that it can be safely described as a mess. Not that all MB fragrances share this cloying and overly sweet nature. Some even like Infinite Spicy are top notch at a great price. As for Black leather, it does get quite a bad press and rightly so in my opinion.

I smell no leather nor "smoothnes". It's a little cloying amber-woody smell. Lack of projection and longetivity. Not worthy at all. Remindes me of some ZARA fragrances.

Uhh... lasts like a second on my skin. It's a nice scent, but nothing special; wouldn't wear.

This is really not bad at all. I'd say, very good in fact. Very pleasant. But it's not D&G The One. It's not a clone, nor does it resemble it much. It does however go in the same direction. If you ever tried The One, that creamy smoothness... it is what you will get in this because this frag is so soft and smooth as hell. The smoothest leather you have ever tried. You know how leathery frags can be harsh and strong, or go in not so pleasant territory so they are often balanced with some other fruity, tobacco or vanilla notes. Nowhere near as strong leather that can be found in frags like Tuscan Leather or Ch Men Prive or Dior Homme Parfum. Waaaaaay smoother, waaaay more toned down. Doesn't have the fruity top like The One. Doesn't smell like tobacco. Replace the tobacco in The One with the smoothest possible leather and you will get this. The only thing it has in common with The One is that smooth manly feel of leather, where The One has the same with fruits and tobacco but The One is so so much more. It has so much more going on. The most common thing they share is the creamy smoothness but they are very little alike. It's like... opening a new Mercedes for the very first time but not sitting in, rather staying outside and feeling the leather smell of the seats come to you. It's like you have put that harsh leather note on some drugs, like Prozac or it has smoked a tone of weed so it's calm as fuck, to the extent that it can't get any calmer. I know now what the other reviewer meant by leather note being too soft because it is... way too calm and it rides like that from start to finish. Some citrus later but way way in the background. Creamy smooth suede. All the way. That's all. Overall, it is a good frag but I don't think it's a full bottle worthy. There are plenty of better ones for the leather lovers. This I can only imagine if you have a brand new car, doesn't matter which one, and you want to enhance that typical new car leather smell in there. You come to pick up a girl or someone and they enter and say... mmm a new car smell, I love that smell. This is exactly that. Very pleasant but very simple and one dimensional. On my arm it goes in the way of creamy suede. Like you have a gentle face cream that smells of totally non offensive and mellow suede. And you know how suede leather on shoes or jackets can be very strong smelling, good, but strong. Has a bit of an alcoholic opening but that is gone in first 10 minutes and because of that plus Incense, it resembles the opening of Bentley Intense but only barely so don't expect either frags in this one. It's not a clone, nor does it remind me of both much. Would anyone have anything against wearing this? Absolutely not. Would everyone buy it... nope. Or I highly doubt it.

Just purchased this for $55. Unicorn prices have this over $200. I'll give a quick assessment of this line. Black Leather: Pending. Low availability. Addictive Oriental: Okay. Fig is a bit strange to me. High quality lemon. Limited availability. Infinite Spicy: Not for me. Smells like an expensive version of Old Spice. Decent availability. Energetic Aroma: Very good. Luxury gym scent. Sillage has a positive effect. Not available. Pure Woody: Under rated scent that shows up more expensive green apple scents. Not available.

This is my current signature scent. A fresh fresh fuity and slight dark amd smokey Scent. The leather, patchouli and sage notes keep this scent very fresh allowing the more fruitier and sweeter notes to come out and play. A nice wafting incense note always lingering gives this a slighly mysterious yet sexy edge. Could worn all year round amd good for many different occasions. A standout of last year for me.

It doesn’t appear to be available in UK online or otherwise. That’s quite puzzling because you can buy pretty much anything in the UK (apart from guns!), particularly where scents are concerned.. Yes, you can buy it from Germany, delivered all in £60, but from the reviews, I can get a lot more bang for my buck elsewhere for that price.

tried this one in a local store and it's very close to D&G The One Royal Night. love it but i already have The one RN so this will be redundant in my collection. I'll consider buying Black leather after i go through my bottle of The One RN! it's that close!

Oh my this is the best scent ever read below I put on creed aventus and changed my mind and Sprayed black leather over it. They have amazing synergy it smelled fantastic someone please try this and give me your opinion!! Creed aventus + black leather Benz

This is a fantastic affordable fragrance. Its a sexy cozy scent. Off the top I got a boozy/fruity/sweet and peppery intro. I'd say longevity is average with projection being close to you. The opening will be a big pull for many who try this.

Wanted it to be a sensation... But for ma a nice, gentle, typical car freshner scent. Dont get me wrong, many would say it is lovely, and it is. .. But black?? Leather??

For me, this is similar to Lacoste pour homme. Are there other guys who noticed the similarity between those two? Mercedes has a slightly smokey undertone.

The hole VIP Collection sounds awesome , especially the pure woody Edition , can hardly wait till it comes to Egypt & the bottle design really great !!!!

Smells just like it's named, they could have put the word Real in front. Quality is smack dab in the middle of Dark Rebel and Ombre Leather.
