Metal Fougère

While many blazoned master perfumers are currently stuck in a creative (contractual?) loop iterating the same safe, mass-pleasing safe recipes until they become olfactory white noise, Miguel Matos is out here slinging fastballs. With Metal Fougere, he has managed the nearly impossible: he’s made the classic fougere - the literal definition of "boring" in modern perfumery - genuinely techno-subversive. The fragrance opens with an almost violent coldness. It’s the smell of a sterilized lab. However, this "cold steel" facade quickly cracks to reveal a startlingly familiar heart. As the metallic aspect softens, it pivots into a herbal powderiness that evokes Felce Azzurra, the legendary Italian "Blue Fern" talc/soap. It’s a bizarre transition from a futuristic factory to a vintage barbershop. Matos achieves this high-contrast tension by using specialized captive ingredients that provide a structure naturals simply can't: - Sclarene: originally developed for Hermes, this molecule provides a dry, metallic, "hot iron" effect that mimics clary sage but feels far more industrial. - Rosyrane (Givaudan): a sharp floral that brings a "blood-on-metal" tang, preventing the lavender from becoming too traditional. These captives act as a cold cage for the classic lavender-oakmoss-coumarin core. By suspending the soft, nostalgic scent of Felce Azzurra inside this synthetic scaffolding, Matos demonstrates a range that his Master peers seem to have forgotten... or perhaps they can't exercise, because they are not independent. I'm scoring this as a 9/10 scent wise, as the evolution of the scent is limited but... practically, Metal Fougere is exemplary in how to use cutting-edge synth alchemy to rethink the smells of our grandfathers.

I was one of the first people to ever try it, and surprisingly I liked it, Nothing really special... But it has that Dirty powdery floral vibe with that natural sweetness and spiciness. Could be more the interesting, but i like the bottle. The metallic accord hits only in the end tho😭
