Rose En Noir

Many people are wearing this instead of Portrait of a Lady & indeed that was why I purchased this 50ml (gorgeous) red bottle in it's dark red box. Myself I still thought of buying POAL a while ago buy not o disappoint anybody - POAL is not what it was when my Great Aunt used to wear it sometimes. If u can find a bottle from pre 2012 then that's good - buy anything post reformulation is not & it's a bit disappointing to be honest. That - is where u will find a very dusty & very dusty-woody drydown) & it sits with it all the way through mixed with the blacurrant/berries patchouli incense & roses - but the rose is now thin & not the way it was (& has a sourness it never had before. Yes it used to be a very Gothic perfume perhaps but it was a wonderful Evening Perfume (perfect for a night at the Opera or out to dinner) or to a beautiful Winter Ball in an opulent Scottish Hotel or even a Scottish Castle (one of my favourite things is to go to such a Ball & straight out of an almost Fantasy Writer's dream. Of coirse I am myself an Author/Writer & must not get carried away with my description here. ) Now unfortunately though they have ruined POAL & a lot of people won't buy it bc it's not the beautiful perfume it was & they are looking for decent replacements (& a much softer price point because in this Economy niche perfumery is becoming completely ridiculous price-wise) & so now we have Chopard Love. Six different kinds of roses in fact many different kinds of Rose including Bulgarian / Tair / Damascena Rose) & has some cinnamon & very clean patchouli (not much & I couldn't stand that if it wasn't the very clean + definitely not too much version) but what Chopard Love also has is a violet note to bring out the rose(s) & to make it a wearable/modern version of "Something like" POAL - it has brown sugar cinnamon & some cacao (in fact to me there is that but also either white chocolate such as used in Bvlgaril Omnia Original (my Love❤️ ❤️& very hard to find now) how & I hoard my precious three bottles tucked away in a cold cupboard - like Golum) or maybe it's a very milk-y chocolate - but either way that mixed with the violet gives this perfume a wearability which many people wouldn't find in POAL (& certainly if they purchased the new version without testing it first - they would probably be very worried.) With this one also - u can amp up the cinnamon & maybe even honey too (it layers beautifully with Jimmy Choo Illicit & u can also wear it layered with Alien Fusion (cinnamon & what smells almost Jasmin like but is tuberose) & I even have Reve de Miele Nux Wonder Waters meaning "Honey Dream" & that works well too. The violet & brown sugar + cacoa & chocolate give it a sweetness & lighten it up - u can add sandalwood &/or amber perfumes if u want to make it deeper & more POAL like - but for about £31-£35 per 50ml (& postage depending) it is a pretty good one (& the bottle inside the red box is absolutely beautiful. Even if u only wear it for glamorous nights out (& in Autumn Winter even going out for Sunday Lunch or maybe Friday night Dinner u cannot really go wrong with it. The £350 for POAL though (in it's modern formulation would be a waste though) for that price there is far better. Once the reformulation gets to that point - & is so dusty & dry dusty-woodsy on top of the incense & the formerly stunning jammy & deep rose has been replaced with a thin one (& a bit sour too it has no business calling itself POAL. I like Miller Harris Rose En Noir though myself very much - such a gorgeous deep dark evening rose perfume & completely fault-less (& I did (get a back up just in case of the dreaded reformulatiom) but alas - this one is just a smidgen to close to that one when u first spray it (Miller Harris a Luxury Brand + far more expensive than this though - it's a bit annoying really🤭) but this is the sweeter slightly more chocolate-y & sweet violet-y sister (they are very very alike to be honest) & so I'm selling mine because she deserves to go to somebody who will Love her & Wear her to go out (especially at night & especially during the Christmas Season top but any luxurious setting would do (but if I didn't have Rose En Noir & adore it for nighttimes as above) & even for lunches in Wintertime then I wouldn't be doing so. (As it is I'm almost in two minds to do so because the bottle of Chopard Love is so gorgeous) & the bottle of Miller Harris so plain & classic - but then I was supposed to be "De-cluttering." No. I must be strict with myself my Fiance even makes jokes about the closet where the perfumes Live as it is (& I must make a serious effort at the de-clutter project.) Lovely bottle though. I myself am not a great fan of Dupes & usually find them a disappointment currently I cannot cannot stand any of the (very thick & very sweet Middle Eastern Dupes of the kind so many people are raving about on here & recommending (I won't be bothering with any more of those I don't think - but this is not that. It's not really a dupe per se at all really - it is more a Re-imagining of the "Idea of Portrait of a Lady" & I have to say that for the price it is very gold & that is a Lot of Roses some very good sweet but not too sweet violet cacao & milk or white chocolate - but not too gourmand (it has a lovely balance about it.) (They even make tiny versions of these beautiful bottles & there's a 30ml - both of which are stunning & perfect eye candy for your bedroom or walk in closet etc - Chopard know a thing or two about perfumery & have made some really good ones & they clearly know about how to make stunning bottles (& how much we love to treasure those. One thing I would point out to anybody on the fence about which Perfume to choose in looking for something along the lines of POAL is that in Miller Harris Rose En Noir it is violet leaf (& no sugar + some tobacco) giving a more niche perfume effect (& it is expensive really) but in Chopard Love it's actual violet & some brown sugar & cacao + chocolate - which lifts all those roses & not too much woods - very modern & gentle woods in Chopard Love - to make a more wearable in modern times effect perfume (Some people simply wouldn't wear something like Rose En Noir & make comments about it being "Too mature" etc) & most people under 50 now I believe wouldn't wear POAL (although it was very beautiful in it's original formulation) it was a huge Gothic incense-y & bewitching perfume & not something most people would wear on a day to day basis. This whilst being quite at home for glamorous Evening Events would also be very at home accompanying somebody to Lunch in a cosy Restaurant or in a Bistro-Pub & any tearoom by a the Fireplace & would be as suitable for a Night at the Opera (especially if layered with Sandalwood/Ambra or Oud/Woods) as it would be on it's own with some rosy or chocolate-y body cream for Sunday Lunch in Autumn/Winter (& the bottle is just lovely. Precious bottle in fact.) Please message me if u would like to buy my barely sprayed 50ml or if you would like to do any kind of swap - there are a few I don't have & would like to try (& some oldies I would really like) but if my Fiance was to ask I am definitely de-cluttering & being almost ruthless in doing so. (I am certainly not watching any perfume videos on Youtube nor looking at reviews on Fragrantica obviously.)

My bottle is from 2006 and is the Liberty Exclusive bottle back when this was a Liberty exclusive, so it's been macerating away in my perfume cupboard for 18 years LOL. It still smells amazing. Top notes are spice and aromatics mainly: lots of pepper and coriander, lemon leaf, and a bit of patchouli. The head is a bit too "spicy salad" to be my favourite part of the scent, but luckily it settles within a minute or two - the pepper burns off, then the herbs, patchouli and dry tobacco come to the fore for a few minutes for a smoky earthy autumn vibe, and then... then!... the most beautiful, jammy rose you've ever smelled blooms from the sooty earth, unfurling green leaves and dark red petals as tobacco, ambrette and patchouli step back but remain in shadow, to keep the rose very much "en noir". The drydown is bliss. Powdered, but still jammy rose on a bed of dark woods for hours and hours and hours. It's gothic but still fresh, delicious but dangerous. It's elegant, sophisticated, and addictive. I have my nose buried in my wrist as I write this. I remember clearly that it was love at first sniff back in Liberty's in 2006. I had never heard of Miller Harris at the time, but I was instantly hooked. My bank account wasn't agreeable, though, as I recall - so I left the bottle behind that first day. Afterwards, though, thought about it every day for a month until I finally broke down and bought it. I think the only reason there is still half a bottle left is that I was trying to get through my Serge Lutens "Sa Majeste la Rose" at the time, so used this one sparingly. I have no idea how it got shuffled to the back of the perfume cupboard but it's coming out again into regular rotation because it is just as beautiful now as it ever was. I guess the world agrees, as it's still in production, albeit no longer under Liberty's banner. I've discovered a few "dark" roses after this that I also love (Tauer "Incense Rose" and JHAG "Mad Madame" spring to mind), but this was the OG and still one of my favourites.

This is one of my favorite roses. There's a timeless beauty to Rose en Noir. When I first spray it, it's like an unearthed treasure that's been around in a crypt for ages that has maintained its beauty because heat, humidity, moisture and light have never penetrated the container that preserved this beautiful concoction. The coriander, pepper, cumin and patch give a strength and backbone few roses (w/out oud) can be as unisex as Rose en Noir while not muffling the lush ripe rose that must have grown in a royal garden. I must give credit to Lyn Harris for this strong vision. Clearly a man would smolder in this, but this baby is mine all mine. The tobacco and rose are like the contrast between an aria sung by an Alto and Soprano to contain all of this beauty while allowing all notes to shine in this wondrous composition as it swirls in your senses and you thank your lucky stars for the sense of smell and maybe you're fortunate enough to have a backup bottle of the precious. Two hours in I still smell the lemon leaf, and it seems a counterpoint for the pepper and cumin. This is one of my fall/winter favorites that gets pulled front and center with the arrival of fall. This is in a class that I include with L'arte di Gucci, POaL, Rose 31, Une Rose, Rose of Kandahar and Rose Of No Mans Land. This is not an ingenue rose like Izia, Rose Splendide or Rose de Grasse (although I LOVE these compositions too). I could see a young woman with a Goth style loving this perfume, but it is certainly right at home on a woman of taste and experience. For some reason, I could easily see Tom Ford wearing this. For me, this is Ms. Harris' masterpiece.

I don't know that I'd describe this as a gothic rose fragrance--I feel as if I need to smell more than just this and L'Ombre dans l'Eau to form a valid opinion on that--but I can see why others might. I can't make out the supporting notes specifically, with the probable exception of the (laid-back) tobacco. This, though, is in keeping with the fact that, to my nose, this fragrance, while clearly having some sweet and gummy facets such as might be expected in a floral-forward scent (and which here remind me of what I think has been listed as cyclamen in some other scents I've smelt), is mostly a very--not rich, exactly, or at least not in a super-floral or gourmand way--warm, dark, rounded, kind of full-bodied representation of what I experience almost as a big, fat, velvety-thick deep-red English garden rose right in front of my face (or photographed very close up, to the effective exclusion of everything around it, with a very high-quality camera and macro lens). This is not to say that the performance is hefty; it's average. This is not an overcomplicated fragrance but it's not a cheap one-dimensional one either. Very nice for gloomy or damp days or nights in autumn and probably in winter too. Oh, and--I'm male and absolutely do not have a problem wearing this. Edit: of all the fragrances I've tried, this has the capacity to open with the biggest slap of a lipstick effect.

This is a surprising oriental floral, based on rose, with a classical feel. When I arrived here in the database, the only note voted for on the diagram was rose. I voted for the other notes (besides cumin, I din't notice it) because this isn't a soliflore, there are other strong players. For example, Rose En Noir is full of tobacco off the top, and dries down to a clean, dry, leafy scent with a hint of spice. I think it's unique because at first it's a spicy, smoky rose, but for an EDP the sillage is light and texture airy. I'm reminded of a black voile curtain in the bedroom of a country estate, fluttering by the breeze of an open window at evening. It has an element of greenness, but herbal green, an added layer not part of the rose itself... different from Malle's Une Rose, which smells as much of actual rose stems as it does the petals! I will purchase a larger decant of this scent to be able to wear it a few more times. I really enjoy the smoky opening and way it makes *me* feel naturally pretty. The sillage becomes almost too polite for me after 30 minutes of wear. With a larger decant, I can hopefully manage to increase the dose and enjoy this perfume for longer.

I adopted this one early, it was love at first spray. I'm not a fan of rose scents at all (although I like fresh, real roses) - and I made a grudging exception for La Fille de Berlin. But I LOVE this. It seems to get mixed reviews, though. It's a big jammy rose underpinned with a lot of tobacco, musk and pepper; this is not the version of roses in "China Rose" by Floris, or Eau Rose by Diptyque; this is a whole different thing. And completely different to YSL Paris, too. Even if you like rose scents, it's not a safe buy. It's better if you come at it from liking tobacco scents, musk, and spicy florals. I've given it extra longevity by layering it with the body lotion and putting a spray on clothes, too. There may be no rhyme or reason to it, but this is a favourite and I'm hoarding the stuff. For me personally, 10/10 :)

I got this as a gift from my sister and needed to sample it a few times to form an opinion. First time I tried I was new to MH and just thought it felt a bit old-fashioned but enjoyed how it developed. After the 3rd time wearing REN I really enjoyed it, so much so I decided to get a back up as I think it’s a lovely every day fragrance for Autumn and I don’t want to run out! I would say I was quite excited about the idea of the ‘Gothic Roae’ when looking at the comments but didn’t really get that. Maybe it’s my skin but after the initial spicy powdery cloud wears disappears, what I’m left with is a beautiful jammy juicy rose-forward scent which reminds me of being in a summer garden full of roses at nighttime. And due to this association I’ll be wearing it in Autumn reminiscing about summer...

WOW! this is gorgeous. It was a blind buy but as usual there were some good reviews here to assist me making my informed decision. Its definitely a smoky tobacco rose. It says for women but I think a fella could pull this off. Although it is a touch more towards the feminine. Ive smelt a good few rose fragrances and this one is joining my top 5. Yep, along with Portrait of a Lady and 4160 Tuesdays Raw Silk and Red Roses. Its all about a delectable red rose but there is plenty of spice and tobacco. I love how the violet leaf adds an edge. Its like an accent to these lovely notes. Id love this for evening wear. Moderate sillage and longevity which is pretty amazing for an MH fragrance. Treat yourself.

A Beautiful deep red, velvety rose, in a Victorian walled garden ,after the rain. A Haunting, Otherwordly, unforgettable, Gothic Rose. The Orignal formula ( the one in the darker red box , with the floral pattern on the box ) is the most beautiful one to be sure. A must have for all Rose lovers.10/10 Perfect for Autumn days. It smells beautiful in rainy weather, and is nice for an evening out. ( Also the tobacco note is very faint, if it's there at all, which is good for me as I'm not a big fan of tobacco scents. I don't detect any cumin either, which for me is another plus point.) It's just a beautiful deep Rose.

Beautiful scent. Probably leans a little feminine for most but its spicy tobacco vibe keeps me interested. I 100% get a Noir Epices Frederic Malle vibe from this which I have but never wear due to that leaning way too feminine IMO. Dark side of the rose does describe this well and it’s one for the more open minded. This is not mass appealing or “designer” in any way so avoid if you think Tom Ford oud fragrances are oud masterpieces (they are not). One worth trying if you like thoughtful complex rose scents with a traditional approach.

Gothic, incredibly beautiful and particular at night! . A mysterious and nocturnal rose, unusual and very charismatic! It is the first time that I try M.Harris perfumes, and it was love immediately! I will definitely try many other M.Harris perfumes too! Beautiful perfume. Sillage: 7./10 Longevity: 8./10 Scent: 8./10 Overall: 8./10

This rose comes out best in a moist atmosphere, when there's a lot of humidity in the air. It's also a full bodied rose scent, nothing sharp or jarring or green about it in my opinion. It is one of the better roses I have come across so far. I'm a fan :0)

Like other Miller Harris perfumes I tried, this too has a wonderful dusty layer over musky rose and tobacco. Rose scents don't usually work for me, but this was an instant love. Good longetivity on skin, great on clothes, sillage is subtle, but noticable.

One of my favourite Miller Harris perfumes. This is dark and sensuous. Thought this was discontinued but currently available at TK Maxx UK and on sale for a steal so bought 2 bottles.

Every stage of this beauty is heavenly to me. I wear it any time of year but particularly love it in very cold, damp weather (which we get plenty of here in the UK), it brings out the natural, moist character of the rose. The rose is the star here and is evident throughout the life of the perfume. I just love the luscious, juicy open heart of a rose at the start with a little lift from the violet leaf and I usually overspray to get a load of that. But hey, that's ok, because it's an amazing composition and has no harsh or painful edges whatsoever. Pepper, coriander and a perfectly soft, high quality, rounded dark tobacco note join with the rose so beautifully, seamlessly luring her into more daring, darker, denser aspects of her character. (I love tobacco and this is one of the best I have smelled). The patchouli is a very mellow dark green dry earth, subtle, a supporting role. I also detect a black assam tea note. The cumin I don't really smell, but I think it helps everything to merge with our lovely, natural human skin smells. And the ambrette musk is the soft peach skin bed it all rests on. The base of this perfume is really very good, traces left on skin, clothes and hair make me want to burrow my nose deep into the smell. There is a richness to this and a sumptuous creaminess beneath the later stages which I adore, where does that come from? I don't know but this stuff just loves my skin chemistry and I love it back. Rose en noir - she's a strong character who dances to her own tune, for sure, it took me a while to become accustomed to her, but now I know her, she is also warm, intimate and thoroughly engaging. Sillage very good for a couple of hours then gets closer. Longevity is awesome on my skin and my clothes.

i am a Miller Harris fan, i admit. i find the fragrances always provide something unexpected and have a beautiful, almost haunting aromatic quality to them. They are modern perfumes, yet there is a hint of vintage. the ingredients smell more natural, more real. they almost glow with a happy healthy aura. rose en noir is no exception. this is a rose i can wear. it is the only rose (so far) i can wear! the notes are difficult for me to describe, as the rose is the star here, all the way through. she starts off wet, deep, yes jammy rose...green, there is rosewood too and the leaves...the whole rose! she then becomes a sexy (en noir?) rose, with slightly musky/powdery (amberette), slightly sweet, damp earthiness beneath. the violet leaf leaves sparkling silver dew drops of the rose petals. is there a slight smokey incense to my nose?...magic.... it's as if the components of the red rose were taken apart and the accompanying notes were added to enhance each facet...these are the aromas that can not only hold a rose in a fragrance, but can compliment and uphold this particular deep, dark blooming MH red rose from her glorious blossoming to her beautiful dry down. sillage is average and lasts several hours, longevity is 6-8 hours and counting. review for 50ml limited edition EDP.

I blind bought this for a very good price and am happy that I really like it. I see this perfume different then most of the reviews below. I find this to be a red rose but a true red rose, this perfume isn't as dark to me. The opening is a fresh rose w/ lemon leaf, then the violet adds green notes and the spices of cumin, coriander are subtle and so is the tobacco, they never overpower the rose, the lemon leaf or violet leaf. There has a barbershop quality to this perfume as well, a dandy man about town can wear this one or a woman who wants to smell powerful at the office or on a 1st date. It is very unisex to my nose, almost to the point of being to masculine for me to wear but it hangs on by a thread for femininity. This rose has a bit of thorn to it, it isn't a dewy soft pink rose, a sunny yellow rose or a dark as night almost black rose. This is a rose that is true red, a rose in a bouquet of flowers given to a woman or the red rose worn in the lapel of a man's blazer. As the fragrance dies down there is a bit of honey added to the rose, probably from tobacco, like using smoke to coax honey out of a beehive. Glad I took a chance on this one.

Velvet Roses A lovely, understated rose surrounded by velvet, incense, and soft spices. Rose En Noir opens immediately with rose, patchouli, and soft aromatic tobacco spices. This is not brash or garish or even jammy, the woody rose is toned with soft musk layers that feel as smooth as velvet. The tobacco and patchouli give a nice aesthetic quality of a haunted, green woods, where a special rose grows. The violet peeks through an hour or two in, and that too has a soft dim quality, as if it covered in antique dust. Further in I smell incense and even a sweet olibanum, and eventually the spices/incense/musk (ambrette?) take over and the rose is less focused. This definitely has a dark quality, it's not a 'happy' rose. I like this a lot. Definitely wears close to the skin and lasts 6 to 8 hours. I feel like I smell dark and mysterious when I wear this.

This has become one of my top fav dark rose and i had to have a full bottle. The opening is a little too much of everything but it is evolving into a deep jammy rose that is a little smokey, little musky - thus i would not say it was a a definite soliflore. Smells quite unique to me having compared it to the roses i tried so far (smells better to me than legendary SL Rose Nuit or FM Une Rose - maybe it is only chemistry). Also it smells a little dated - but in a good way. A must try for rose lovers imho. Longevity cca 6-7 hours, sillage noticeable in the first few hours, goes closer to skin after that.

Interestingly, I think you could get something pretty close if you layered Serge Luten's Ambre Sultan and La Fille de Berlin. Worth the experiment imo, as both those are very worthwhile to have in your collection independently. Rose en Noir has the coriander (mid-tone) touch of "wet" spice, with a tinge of the lemon leaf around the edges of the sweetness facet. The rose is clear and concise, as it's outlined by pepper. Soft tobacco base holds this somewhere comforting and firm. Really easy and enjoyable to wear! (Currently testing in the summertime with no hesitation. )

I love this, it evokes so many memories..it smells dark, gothic, reminding me of scents I would get walking down Camden market or Kensington market in the 80s...I can also smell incense reminding me of my grandmother burning incense sticks at her little Buddhist shrine for daily morning prayer...it also smells quite femme fatale ..and then on dry down I smell rose potpourri, very comforting..love it !

Rich, honeyed, velvety, deep inky rose. Definitely not a hot summer day issue but I am still investigating it. Its a private moment. Its like a secret fetish, only you and your secret lover know about it but never discuss. Its a silent understanding. Honeyed rich rose with dirty tobacco and amber. I like it very much.

A nice rose but reminds me of the smell of dying wilting flowers?! Like the smell on dried roses!! It's also very powdery like a very old vintage scent were they have gone crazy on the iris!!!! A little spray goes a long way thou!! Use with caution!!!!!

Gorgeous dark rose. It really is. But it seemed to disappear after 2 hours on my skin. Am I the only one who had this problem ?

I am torn with this perfume. It was bought as a blind buy and purely on the strength of the reviews for it on this site. God, I really want to like this, as I do love a complex rose scent! But although I certainly get rose notes on the first spritz, the thick tobacco undertones mixed with patchouli really dirty up the fragrance on my skin. I generally hate tobacco notes, so have to fight a fleeting revulsion and an irrational impulse to run and scrub it off. Once the notes dry down, however, it becomes more acceptable; with the tobacco notes giving way to patchouli and pepper accords accompanying the rose. Whilst not overall a heavy or cloying perfume, Rose En Noir is nevertheless a "dark" perfume; a black and overripe gothic rose on the turn, decaying gently in a vase filled with brackish water. It's not a scent that lingers long on me, so I will need to try it a few times before I can decide whether I really like this.

Linear powder and dusty tobacco. Boring. Absolute thievery at this price. My husband bought it for me as a gift because I had it saved in a shopping cart somewhere- the notes sounded so cool and unique for a woman’s frag (my wheelhouse is non-trad, more unisex scents with notes not common in women’s perfumery). I keep trying to use it up by layering with it, but she’s neither pretty, nor interesting, and she sure as hell isn’t a rose scent unless it’s 80 year old dusty, crumbled dry rose petals. This seriously is one of the worst fragrances I’ve ever owned, and I’m a longtime frag head. The OG Opium was discontinued while garbage like this still circulates in commerce? It’s practically criminal.

Rose en noir is a serious, dark rose. Maybe a tiny bit a jam rose. Yammy :) The rose itself is prominent throughtout all wear, and it's red, even more purple. Good projection for couple of hours. The rose scent you would wear with a formal black dress on a night out, while accompanied by a man in tuxedo smoking just Close enough for you to detect some smoke. Lovely. I am not a fan of rose scents, and this particular, has a bit of "old-lady" feeling to it. However, I am reaching to this scent anyway, puzzled by its complexity. Ideal for colder seasons.

Sweet jammy and velvety rose. This does, to an extent, depict a rose hidden in the shadow, but its ways too sweet for me and definitely not unisex, even for someone like me who can wear perfume labelled for women. Be careful if wear in the heat as this can be too cloying. A pass for me.

Open up a plain filter cigarette & crush the shredded tobacco inside with a heaping tablespoon of Johnson’s Baby Powder. That’s it. Blind buy fail- I was looking for a complex rose, but got a sadly cheap smelling tobacco powder bomb.

Really dark and smoky and warm/spicy but not at all fresh.. it reminds me a lot of black orchid and I don't like it.. there's way too much musk mallow and the rose is just inky

I bought this without smelling it beforehand. I just saw the name and the notes and thought I'd go for it. What a mistake! This was nothing like I imagined. It's a very dusty feeling fragrance and the tobacco here is not golden and sweet at all, more like ash. The rose is old school and powdery. The combination of the dustiness and the rose really just make me think of an old bowl of pot pourri. This one just wasn't for me at all unfortunately. It got resold.

Rose en Noir is original and unexpected, yet safe; definitely not an avant-garde, but it is good cozy scents alternative - enveloping, almost soothing, something one wears purely for oneself’s pleasure, still somewhat murky and moody. Moderate projection leaning towards skin scent category, moderate lasting power, unisex, for colder weather, ideally autumn. All notes are detectable during wear time. The tobacco is the most prominent, but it’s dull, the warmth of it is taken away by ambrette’s airiness and violet leave’s freshness, thus it reminds cigarette’s and not the aromatic, sophisticated pipe tobacco. A bit musky cumin and almost leathery vetiver-like coriander, some pepper brightness and strong imprint of rose. Oh, this is such a mood! Rose en Noir is keen on storytelling. A walk home through empty streets in foggy dawn in late autumn, perhaps there was first frost during the night. Your toes are getting cold in the polished leather shoes, and although a wool coat is warm enough, it slowly gets wet in the humidity. The wool, the rose perfume transferred from somebody else’s coat, the cigarette’s smoke and crisp, fresh air whiffs around. Hangover and tired, yet fully sober.

Picked this up in Gatwick Duty Free on the way to Cuba as I believed that it would project better and last longer in hotter climes - I was right - it was the perfect holiday fragrance. Deep , jammy rose, slightly sweetened with violet underpinned with tobacco and patchouli - if Joy had a slutty little sister, this would be her . Dry down is close to the skin - I found, as usual, that spraying on clothes of a scarf makes this scent last longer and project a bit more . The cumin is there but its not so obvious as to make the overall effect "sweaty" which is what happens in a lot of scents , like (Amouage Epic) . I would like to know exactly which rose molecules or absolute form the middle notes because its very , very nice indeed - its not overly rosy nor is it devoid of warmth . For me, to work in a colder climate like England , I would like to see the Ambrette amped up a bit because it needs more longevity in the dry down . Overall , a nice offering from Lyn Harris - just wish MH scents lasted longer or maybe I just become a bit anosmic when I have worn them for a couple of hours .

Blind bought it today and it's a nice introduction to MH fragrances. I learned from the comments on here that they aim for natural ingredients and that makes sense to me - it's a very fleeing perfume, but if it's natural and doesn't contain all that chemical crap like others, then I'm happy to accept its longevity and respray during the day. I was expecting much stronger deeper scent but the first 10mins is literary a 90's rose room incense. I was a little disappointed because I expected more sophistication but it's just a different type of fragrance. It really smells light and natural, later turns into a rose scented soap (the DIY type one with dry petals), with that incense touch. I would like to move towards more natural non-toxic fragrances so I will be exploring Miller Harris more. I don't think this would impress someone much on a date, the majority of men would probably find it incensy, and maybe even mature-lady like too. This is a perfume I will enjoy wearing for myself, not necessarily to get compliments/impress other.

The Black Rose... I always love trying creations from Miller Harris . I feel that Lyn Harris is a master perfumer who has a talent for making beautifully crafted and exceptionally natural smelling perfumes. Rose en Noir is a deep, dark spicy rose perfume which reminds me of other creations such as Rose 31 by Le Labo . I also feel that this is one best suited for night and formal wear. The combination and blend of strong, prominent rose with aromatic dry tobacco is really unique, which is combined with the spicy cumin, black pepper and coriander, dark patchouli (always a common combination with rose) and crisp violet leaf. This is like a rose in darkness, shrouded in night and dark shadow. A very dusky rose perfume which is sultry and different. I recommend this one and actually find it very unisex (with just the right amount of spices). Nothing is cloying or overwhelming or out of place. It shows once again that Lyn Harris is a master perfumer and at the top of her game. Great stuff and worth trying out.

Unusual, very spicy rose with a typical MH herbal/natural perfumery touch. This rose is velvety and full of life, but it isn't your typical rose soliflore, the flower is somehow overpowered by spices, at least in hotter weather. Interesting thing - it smells hippy-like and mature at the same time. Not a blind buy material, it does not smell like anything you have tried before. Heavy on coriander, pepper and tobacco. I think of a flamenco dancer as I smell Rose en Noir, she is a smoking lady, with dark hair, in her bordeaux velvet dress, right after the performance (therefore forget about right out of the shower type of smell; the smell is still rather clean though). Very good quality, and an acquired taste. I quite like it, but won't wear it until the temperatures get cooler: it's too dense. Both longevity and sillage are quite good.

Rose en Noir is a garnet rose, the last of the filtered sunlight coming through, but mostly the rose is in the shadows, haunted, crepuscular, as if you find yourself standing in the woods and find this luminous flower and you feel your hairs stand on end. The music that plays as I write this is Bjork's "All Neon Like." What is this foxfire rose? It pulls me in. Violet leaves, a green contrast, slight oily vegetation, damp and fecund. The pepper and patchouli lend a decaying wood quality, with undertones of tobacco further lending to the effect, yet there is this deep red, deep blood red, and night falls. Nothing is clean, nothing is clear, but it's all calm, and the velvet envelops you, the velvet of this Rose en Noir. Dusk descends into night.

When I first tested it, I thought: Soap en Noir. Nothing exciting, and not very pretty. And luckily, I got to test this one again, because today I did not get the soapy note at all... There is a gap between the name and the scent though- 'en noir' suggests something dark and heavy, while Miller Harris's rose is actually light, fresh and slightly sweet with a touch of green. Delicate, a bit powdery, makes me think a bit of JHaG's Lady Vengeance, but is even more innocent. It is a kind of a fragrance that I find easy to get infatuated with, but I do not think it is going to create desire or long lasting love. Nevertheless, a good one for people looking for fresh, green rose.

To me, this scent is leaning toward green/fresh rose. Nothing dark or mysterious to see here I'm afraid. The violet leaf if very prominent. There is something resembling Calypso from Robert Piguet in this sense. I would not put it anywhere near Byredo No man's land rose, heck they are not even close. Also, this scent did not play well with my body chemistry. I really wanted to love it, but this ambrette(perhaps) turns into a sour mess akin to a breakfast tea with milk that stood in a kitchen sink for 3 days. I was frustrated by the lack of real information in the description, so I went online to find out what, exactly, was in this one. I love Miller Harris, but I'm not all that fond of rose perfumes. This is the description from the Miller Harris web site: Ruby red raspberry fruits, violet leaf and hints of petit grain provide a tantalising introduction, while rich notes of Turkish rose Damascena and black pepper dominate the heart. Rose en Noir seductively draws down into a deeply rich velvet base of ambrette seed, tabac noir, vetiver and patchouli.

Just bought a bottle and I find this very complex and confusing. Not sure if I like it or not lol. The stages of changing notes is so clearly made, this perfume has changed so much on me! I like the opening, then second phase is the one I don't like, I think is the violet leaf and the pepper combination. However after 30 mins sets nicely on, warm and pleasant. I still detect the cardamom on me after 30 mins, can't detect any rose, so mainly patchouli and cardamom.It is nice, but I might sell my bottle,not sure yet :-)

I think this is a very gothic rose. It is dry and honeyed, but the spices and patchouli make it somewhat bitter, very dark and nocturnal. I do not like the way it smells up close to the skin, but in the distance, the wafts in the air are very pleasant and intriguing. It is even more gothic than La fille de Berlin, very androgynous and moody. It has a melancholic and austere beauty. Rainy cold night sort of thing.

Sadly didn't last on my perfume eating skin. It's a lovely scent, but not riveting, I don't stop in my tracks for it. L'Air de Rien lasts all day and half the night on me but not this Mama. At the price I'd stay with Tocade, (Budget) Nahema, or Annick Goutal's roses. I have recently purchased the Rosines des Paris sample pack and found some rather lovely roses in there that last at least six hours on me. Try It!

Opens with a deep jammy rose, not too dissimilar to Fille de Berlin. I get no pepper or cumin, but I do get a distinctive dose of coriander, which remains right through into the drydown. The coriander gives the rose a slight metallic edge. Dries down to a musky rose with metallic coriander. Interesting but not for me. IMO there are better 'noir' roses out there.

What I like of the Miller Harris's scent I own (L'air de rien, La Pluie) is their dusty side. I hate clean perfumes. I'm not a rose perfume fan because too often those ones are fresh and clean. Lyn Harris really did an interesting interpreration of the so classic rose. For sure Lyn Harris is my favorite british nose. I would like to smell her new line Perfume H.

A vintage, dusty rose with a natural elegance. Smells like an autumn day spent inside hiding from the rain, next to your lover who smells faintly like cigarette ash. There is an old bouquet of roses on the table, dried to a dark crimson.

I definitely smell honey in this, but where is it in the notes profile? Very sweet tobacco rose, but I expected more rose and tobacco and less honey. There is also a slightly powdery lipstick vibe from the violet and ambrette.

Smart, elegant, evocative rose enriched by a strong, classic tobacco leaves dry down. A rose for men? Yes definitely. Is it dark? A dusky rose more like, but I could wear it both day and night. A must-have.
