French Defense

Update: I think it's fair for me to be honest, after leaving a rave review, that I've fallen out of love with this one. Being that this was something different for me, I went head over heels, and then realized this is actually quite thin in feel overtime. And then I made a similarity that kind of killed it for me: black cherry kool-aid (an expensive and high-quality kool-aid, mind you)... over an amber base, with some florals. My romance with French Defense is over, lol. It's still very nice, though. I ended up preferring Sissa and Queening more. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see there has been a surge in cherry perfumes, lately. I'm game for cherry, but I haven't been impressed until I smelled French Defense. THIS is the truest black cherry fragrance out there, and I can't get it off of my mind. I will not rest until I have a full bottle of this. I'm sorry but... Tom Ford, eat your heart out. This is deep enough to where it is genuinely unisex. Don't let the floral notes deter you from trying this, gentlemen. The black cherry is served on a woody amber base. It may just be my chemistry, but those florals are simply background noise on me. French Defense stays true to itself for a couple hours, and its main con is this: as it fades, the cherry note starts to smell synthetic and plastic-y. That can be remedied with re-application, though. Cherry is generally a tricky note to play with, but Mind Games did it the best. Lasting power is lacking a bit, but it's such a uniquely done cherry that I'll put up with consistent reapplications. So, so, so good. Note: I layered this with Queening, and it was an interesting combination. A bit like cherry vanilla coke with rum, if you want to be experimental.

A few personal thoughts after spending a couple of months with my new bottle, taking into account that this is a costly fragrance purchase ($375 +tax): * First, don’t go into this fragrance with the mentality that it will be “ultra-niche” smelling or challenging in any way... which might be an easy mistake given the price tag. This fragrance has designer sensibilities (albeit high-end) meant to appeal to almost everyone. * At its core, it is still something you find at Dillards, Nordstrom, etc. (where it is sold). Most will appreciate the wearability, but some who have been heavy into fragrance for years may want more. Ultimately, it's very good at what it's intended for... smelling damn good to you and those around you. * Now the obvious... A WOW CHERRY. There is no question that this is very cherry-centric. You definitely won’t find yourself questioning, “I think I can pick out the cherry note,” as sometimes happens with many other fragrances. * If you’ve ever opened a packet of black cherry flavored Crystal Light or Koolaid and inhaled a blast of the powder that floats up in your face, you’ve smelled French Defense’s opening. This smell lasts through the duration of the fragrance as it melds into a designer-esque amber wood. * Layering options are fun with this one. Apply with "Chocolate Greedy" for a cherry cordial, "Tonka Cola" for a Cherry Coke, "Reflection Man" for cherry blossoms, etc. If money is no option and cherry is your thing, I'd recommend French Defense without reservation. Rating: 8.75/10

Got a decanted tester of this and oh my... Smelled on blotting paper, the first note is that deep, dark cherry. If anyone remembers Cherry in the Air by Escada, think the opposite of that cheap, synthetic sweetly sour cherry. This is deep and juicy, like discovered in a deep forest. I assume it was the violet leaves that made me raise my brow a little bit, they we're harshly masculine for a split second, but it got pressed down very quickly, melding into this fruity, sophisticated floral scent with a deep, warm amber presence with not too dry or wet wood. This is what I would imagine smelling on a weeknight when playing a casual game of chess after work at a leisurely club, against a highly intellectual, rich, yet down to earth professional. It honestly feels like the chess opening it is supposed to represent. I could totally see Alexandra Botez, who plays the French, wearing this. Will update when I test on skin, but just two sprays from a high quality atomiser on paper made my whole bedroom smell beautiful, I had to take the paper outside the room and air out, because the scent really lingered. It still lingers, even though I washed my hands, only put two sprays and took the paper into another room. It is potent, but not strong or harsh. It just likes to create a solid position. I think this would be a two, even just one spray type of deal.

UPDATED REVIEW: First things first, my price expectation for this was absurd haha Around 200-250 is what I can find the Mind Games I have enjoyed, and this was no different ~$250. Very much worth the time it took to actually see it down to this price, which is significantly below retail. This is my favorite cherry forward fragrance. A beautiful wear and one that I can see many women gravitating to, but leans quite masculine on my skin. Second cherry fragrance I'd own, still way behind this one, would be Bodacious - though they smell NOTHING alike - French Defense still stands rather unique and is one I encouraging everyone to sample first! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OLD REVIEW: Coming up on 8h with a noticeable presence in the air. This lingers in the air more than it takes over the space in projection. BEAUTIFUL dark cherry, leaning a bit more masculine than even I expected. Great scent profile and development, with an interesting approach to a dark fruity amber that does carry good versatility year-round aside from summer and warmer transitional days. Cost-benefit = not for me. I'd love to pick this up for around $150 as I would Blockade. Great presentation but need to see the price coming a bit lower, though plenty of quality is present here.

Recently picked this up last Friday while vacationing in Denver and I have always been a little apprehensive to dig into this brand solely based on the price of admission. I initially stopped at Neiman Marcus to smell the new creeds as well as anything new Xerjoff had released but ended up with French Defense... So to the scent itself It starts off with a juicy/syrup-y Cherry ( not candy like, think of maraschino cherry ) with a mildly sweet vanilla backbone, the cherry starts to die off around the 1 hour mark but it stays noticeable throughout the entire life of it. but then the "blonde woods" kicks in and it has a really nice soft woody note to it that keeps it on the masculine side ( although I think this is totally unisex ). I did not expect to love this as much as I do, I rarely find one with such juicy fruit in the top as well as such a soft warmth at the same time. I have been wearing this to the office for the last few days and have had a handful of compliments which isn't usual so that only tells me I made the right choice. I would say you can wear this day or night and in almost any weather just don't go too heavy because this stuff lasts a while. total: 9/10

This is an excellent cherry scent, but its unisex aspect has left me wanting more all the times I've worn in in the past year, in various occasions. So, I'm just removing it from the want list and voting it as more female. While the amberwoods show up quite early and try to balance out the lovely but very feminine and quite sweet maraschino cherry / fruity shampoo top, most days they just keep lurking in the background without actually adding texture to the pink elements in the blend. In colder weather the fruitiness does not pop off the skin as loud, but it is still very present. If French Defence had just a tiny bit more of its amberwood base, or some resin to enhance the boozy aspect and darken down the cherry, it would have been absolutely unisex and a great contender for the title of best cherry scent in the market for men (which is JUAKM Hedonistic and we're not arguing about that). Maybe it's time for the house's first extrait flanker? 🤗 Or perhaps some middle eastern brand will do the hybrid thing and make a Paradigme clone with a maraschino cherry addition? But that will probably suck, apparently good cherry notes and lower budgets don't go together.

Best cherry fragrance ever made. I am not joking or exaggerating, and I have tried a lot of them before buying French Defense. French Defense is at the first spray flowers then immediately you smell the cherry, but it is an elegant cherry. The QUALITY of the ingredients is high and you can smell it when you first spray it. This perfume is not a cherry body mist that you buy in the pharmacy or a cheap cough syrup (that some have tried to compare it to) that you buy in the supermarket or in the pharmacy, It is an elegant combination that will last the whole day on your skin and on your clothes. I have received so many good compliments that I can't remember how many of them. A lot of the complaints are about the price, but if you want to smell cheap you can buy something else. THE PERFUME WORTHS ITS PRICE , it is a unisex scent, lasts the whole day and projects, the bottle is heavy and the cap is magnetic, it works better in the winter so with all the layers and coats that we use for the winter, this perfume still lasts all day and has a strong sillage. I love this perfume and it is an excellent perfume. It won BEST PERFUME OF THE YEAR. 10/10

Update to my previous review on French Defense*** After testing the fragrance a few weeks ago I recently bought a full bottle because I fell in love with the fragrance. With that being said I take back what I said about overbearing notes, as this fragrance is pretty subtle. It's not a fragrance that fills the room, nor is it really one that will garner compliments from distances. Yet, French Defense is still a phenomenal fragrance, and I want to rate the smell higher than what I did last time. It smells overall like a high quality cherry fanta/sprite, which I love about it. With that being said, it eventually fizzles into an amber/coffee cherry scent that still is superb. I love this scent, and have trouble comparing it to queening which I tried out a couple of days ago. But my biggest gripe about this one is that it's not a loud fragrance altogether, and might die out quickly depending on how many sprays you use or what you do throughout the day. light 9/10, would be a full ten if it had better projection

Oh my god, the best mind games fragrance has been found. I love Guerlain L homme ideal edp but this is miles above it. Sweet, rich, deep, realistic almost dreamy smelling cherry. Best cherry fragrance on the market. It’s also backed up by a slightly boozy, amber scent. I go crazy over this shit. Performance is alright for an Extrait de parfum. price is crazy but if you’re willing to pay 300-360USD for an 100ML then do just that. Safe blind buy if you like a lot of cherry. I always find mind games selection at Neiman Marcus if you want to sample first. Top 3 niche fragrance I have ever smelled. Also deff more of a men’s fragrance than a woman’s but it takes a good level of confidence to pull off for both genders. 12/10

This is a very good fragrance, but as a man, it might be slightly too feminine for my taste. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure some guys rock this, but Maybe not the best fit for me. But I can definitely still appreciate this. My favorite part about it is definitely the cherry opening, it’s so smoothly sweet that I can’t help but go back and smell it every once in a while. I don’t really think this is appropriate for daily office or school wear, but it definitely shines in special events (Homecoming, Prom, Work events, etc.) Personally, I believe Mind Games Prodigy has this beat though. It’s not as sweet but still has such an elegant rose note that I can’t help but have it as my favorite fragrance of all time.

Honestly, WOW. Not enough people speak about this fragrance. I saw another review describe it as a “juicy” cherry, rather than the typical powdery cherry scents, and honestly, I could not agree with this statement more. The opening is like a juicy cherry being squeezed in front of your nose. Also, the longevity is great and I think it is quite powerful. Even a single spray stays on my neck for a long time and I will keep smelling it through out the day (I personally do not go nose blind to this fragrance). Obviously, like most mind games fragrances, the price is a little high, but it is also the best cherry on the market imo and you probably will not find a similar scent from another brand.

Let me tell you something. I never thought cherry could smell so good. Especially on me. Most cherry perfumes do not smell good to me at all. LISTEN TO ME. If not for this economy, if I could drench myself in this perfume I would. Such a gorgeous, sultry cherry vanilla. It is absolutely delicious. A sophisticated edible delight, without the sugar rush. They truly got this perfume right. My one and only complaint is the grown and tantalizing cherry note does not last as long as it should. At least for me and my skin type, I have to OD on the sprays to have it last all day. Still, not sure if I’ll ever find an alternative soon so I will me dousing myself as necessary lol.

Unlike other cherry perfumes outhere, this one lasts and has an outstanding sillage. It is also seriously well blended. It is sophisticated and its performance is great in the winter and cold months in general. I won't use it in the summer. I think that if you have a cherry scent, because of their " low performance" reputation, you need to dig within the ones in the market and find one that suits your needs. For me, French defense is one that, honestly, is the best of the category. Forget about Tom Ford "Lost cherry" this one the cherry is lost and gone after 2 minutes, BDK "Rouge Smoking", or "Duchessa" by Gritti. French Defense, the best of Mind Games.

I knew i would one day own a full bottle by a blind buy, because i live in a place access to samples for testing is not easy. Regardless, my judgements in fragrance purchases have never failed me. That day finally arrived, for goose bumps on unboxing to the first sniff all was amazing. This scent is really really good. My first wear ended up with as many compliments as other fragrances give me a week in a single day. That evening on a shopping mall, a lady 2 meters away asked me what i was wearing and asked for a name for her wishlist. What a masterpiece which gives something different out of 50+ collection. Easy 10/10 in scent, projection and longevity.

For me, this one is simply divine. It’s a boozy cherry fragrance exquisite and undeniably expensive-smelling. To be completely honest, this was a gift, and I’m not sure I would pay full retail price for it. The projection is moderate and the longevity is around 5 hours on my skin, but it definitely smells opulent, sexy, and unisex. In the heart, I clearly get a very modern and sensual rose, beautifully blended. The liqueur-like cherry is wrapped in vanilla, with a subtle touch of chamomile that adds an interesting and refined nuance. Everything rests on a warm amber base, smooth and delicious, giving the fragrance depth and a truly addictive character.

A good fraction of the cost for this goes towards the bottle presentation. It's a high quality miniature trophy with an equally award worthy fragrance inside. The bottle has a hefty polished metal top, a strong magnetic cap, and a black wooden trim to tie it off. Simple but elegant, pictures don't do it justice. Once you have it in your hands you'll appreciate the design and craftsmanship. If you favor sweet perfumes, this is worthy of being your signature scent for anytime and anywhere. It's strong and inviting, but not overbearing. It is a safe blind buy but due to the price most should still test it first. Everyone needs get their nose on this!

Smelled this on someone and fell in love with it. You'd think it would be a woman's fragrance considering it's big on the cherry but it fits so well on a man. Bought this wow it's great, lasts around 9-12 hours on me and projects well even with just 2 sprays. Bottle is luxurious and the design is very good, however it is very expensive so if your planning to purchase, wait til there is a Black Friday or purchase off of the website when they have 15% sales. Personally I would wear this on a night out, or really going out in general. Its not too wearable in heat so note that, but its a very solid fragrance!

AMAZING. This fragrance literally gets STRONGER with age! I sprayed it on the frag card in Bloomingdale’s weeks ago and it’s still going strong!!! It’s even stronger! Yes I do store the card somewhere very safe for frag research purposes. BUT WOW. I WENT BACK to Bloomingdale’s today and I sprayed a total of 12 shots on myself. I SMELL INCREDIBLE. POWERFUL. I OWN THE VERY AIR YOU INHALE AND EXHALE. I AM IN YOU. 3 on shoulders on jacket 3 on pecs underneath jacket. I am a living legend with this frag on. SMELL SO KUCH LIKE TOM FORD OUD VOYAGER but even more older! I LOVE BOTH!!!! I NEED BOTH!!!

A Beautiful, velvety, and smooth cherry-forward fragrance with a slightly synthetic edge, yet still one of the best from this house. The cherry note is seductive and well-executed, and the performance and longevity impress for the category. It leans unisex for me, though slightly feminine, and works especially well on crisp autumn and winter evenings. I often wear it for work anyway because I do not care. If only the woods were a little richer in the dry down, this could be a masterpiece. As it stands, it is a must have for anyone drawn to cherry scents. You will not regret picking this up.

Delicious juicy black cherry opening, realistic cherry note which is also the perfect sweetness. Dries down into a beautiful amber-rose-dried cherry type thing, one of my favorite frags i’ve ever tried. Darker, more masculine, better version of Lost Cherry and Electric Cherry with a beautiful twist. Got it today so can’t be for sure about performance but I got 2 compliments about 4 hours after spraying it and it lasted on skin through 2 showers and a gym session, so i’d say long lasting and decent projection. Best mind games by FAR and I personally own 3. 11/10.

HOLLLYYYY GRAIL frag for me. This is usually number one in my whole collection. So dang good. I hate cherry scents usally but my goodness this is a banger. Every other mind games for me has been beyond mid af so I would really recommend sampling this and the rest of the house b4 buying. I know some people dont appreciate this and get medicinal or syruppy nastyness. Not me. This is my cold weather goat. I wear this on a night out its on me the next day ez. Performs great. Unisex frag and makes me feel confident as a dude. Would smell great on a shordy too.

The amazing thing about this cherry fragrance is that it is rich, smooth, sweet, dense, etc. But, it's also clean - almost soapy clean. It actually is fairly magical. Hyped? Yep. So what. Some things are hyped because they deserve it. Smells nothing like lhomme ideal edp. Smells nothing like banana republic dark cherry amber, which is a cheap synthetic powdery feminine frag that smells like the price of the fragrance, honestly. This will challenge Guerlain Cherry Oud for the best cherry fragrance I've ever worn. Very very different frags though. 9.5/10.

I’ve been hearing about French Defense for some time now and i had it on my buy list to purchase for my fiancé without ever smelling it lol. I knew from the notes and reviews i would love it for her. Fast forward to today, i stopped in Dillards with my fiancé and we finally smelled it. I was blown away! This is more than cherry. This is so good, i want it for myself now lol. I know Mind Games prices are up there but honestly, this is worth the price. Always sample first! I can’t see how anyone can dislike this fragrance.

Personally this one is a 10/10 for me the performance is insane I get about 8-9 hours and 12+ skin scent. Just the most perfect cherry and amber I’ve ever smelled I would say this one is completely unisex I get nothing but compliments on it but I’m I smelled a woman wearing it I would love it just as much such a beautiful fragrance. My only gripe 395 is allot to ask people to pay get a decant and make sure you like it and get it for a discounter but over all it’s worth it!

Extraordinary. I adore this fragrance and I’m not really a fan of cherry accords. It’s perfect in every way. Fruity, but tons of amber, I can almost taste the amber and cedar wood. Reminds me of a cigar box but without tabacco if that makes sense. The bottle is about the most luxurious thing I’ve ever owned. Thick glass with a very heavy, magnetic cap. You could kill a man with this thing. If you’re looking to splurge look no further. French Defense is amazing.

Beautiful smelling and very unisex. Cherry, vanilla, warm spicy and perfectly gourmand. Not too much sweetness or too little, just the perfect amount for maintaining its addictive quality and texture. Amazing for night time occasions and special occasions,insanely addictive. I find it somewhat hard to like cherry fragrances, as I always think they are “too much” (or maybe they just don’t fit my taste) but this is an exception I am so glad to have tried. 10/10

Anyone who thinks this smells like banana republic dark cherry and amber probably thinks the steaks at golden corral are as good as steaks anywhere else. Probably thinks a McDonald's hamburger is just as good as any other burger anywhere. Probably thinks Wal Mart pants are just as good as any other pants from any other clothing retailer. Probably thinks wish.com is legit quality. I'm joking, but yah. The BR fragrance smells like hair chemicals next to this.

THE cherry fragrance. I love cherry as a note but most cherry frags are powdery... I was looking for a juicy cherry frag, and this is it. Plump aromatic cherry, rich and luxurious, sweet but not cloying and mass-appealing. IMO you can use this all year round except in the high heat, perfect for nights in general. Projection is not too loud but it's still good, lasts about 10 hours give or take and stays with you. 10/10 simply, the best cherry fragrance IMO.

Amazing fragrance, but it is a bit on the pricier side to be honest. I got a sampler discovery set for Christmas of 2024. Still have a lot of juice left, I would maybe save up for this. It's a great cherry fragrance, and it's done well. Perfect for more dressed-up occasions at night. Def a date night signature if you are looking for one. Obviously, with the price tag, I would pull this out sparingly. Save it for the nice events and the S.O. 9.2/10

I am seemingly on a never-ending pursuit of the holy grail cherry scent. French Defense does not disappoint. In the world of Lost Cherry, Cherry Smoke, and Rouge Smoking, French Defense shines through with its amber base. It’s a masculine leaning cherry in my opinion and it makes the wearer feel incredibly badass. The right girl could absolutely pull this off however. Signature scent worthy and an easy blind buy if you’re a cherry person.

Honestly, this is the best CHERRY FRAGRANCE ever made. It has everything, long lasting (on me until the next day). Projection (on point). People on the street has asked me about it and they also want a picture of it. It is an elegant cherry perfume. Performes better in the cold months. It can be used day and night. I am buying an extra one just in case they reformulate it. Excellent perfume from Mind Games. I also will say it is unisex.

I like it. Musky cherry and roses. I thought I didn't like rose scents at all until I tried this. Makes me feel at ease to put this on in the afternoon or night on a rough day. Mind games fragrances are always satisfying and I love the bottles, but I feel they are egregiously overpriced. $400? Hard to justify that price for almost any fragrance. That's the same price for Oud Satin Mood which I feel competes with this in scent profile.

This is my first Mind Games perfume and I am loving it to the core. It is a cherry scent but Oh God!!! it smells so good, regularly cherry scents do not last but this one does and the cherry scent lasts throughout the whole life of the scent. It is long lasting, complement getter, leaves a trail behind you. I love it so much that I only use it for special occasions. if you love cherry scents this is a MUST BUY. You won't regret it.

Smells like the least cloying and most beautiful cherry note I have ever put my nose to. Absolute masterpiece, I hope I can muster up the courage to buy this one day for $250, which don’t get me wrong is a lot, but in my opinion it’s worth it No hate to him, but idk how Fb fragrances thinks prodigy is better than this. It’s nice, but it’s too weak for me. This is amazing, possibly one of the best things I have ever smelled

Phenomenal Cherry gourmand. It smells rich and luxurious with great projection and longevity. It by far the best cherry fragrances that I have ever smelt (just kidding reviewers the word is smelled, smelt is a fish). Anyways, back to the fragrance - great evening, date night option. Definitely unisex. I would swear there is a hint of booze, maybe an amaretto or rum accord. Just an unbelievable scent. Rating 9/10.

Most addictive scent I have. It is a sweet dark cherry with the added complexity of woody/amber notes. The performance is fine (not nuclear, not bad; pretty average), and it doesn't work for hot summer weather, however the actual scent profile is the best in my collection. There's something about it that just makes you want to keep smelling. I would shower myself in this if it didn't cost so much. 10/10

Love at first sniff. She's pricy but beautiful. I had to have it. The opening is a mix of JPG Scandal's opening, with some TF Cherry Smoke. Super sweet and juicy. Then as it evolves it loses some of the sweetness and the floral start to show up. The cherry will remain but take a back seat. This is not a Lost Cherry or Cherry Smoke clone, it has it's own profile. Longevity and projection are moderate,

On the contrary to my testing of grandmaster, I do indeed like this scent. Although skin vs. paper might smell different, this fragrance is enjoyable if you like the smell of cherries in general. It's fruity, and gives a ultimate vibe of a cherry fanta or sprite (which I think is really good). The cherry note makes up somewhat for the longevity that the fragrance has , it's pretty overbearing. 8.5/10

Maxmiller614 described it exactly the way I smell it, "A little cherry, a little rose, a little leather, overall sweet and woody." And, I'll add, although those scents are not groundbreaking, the quality of the ingredients makes ALL the difference. It smells lovely. For me, this is the best and most luxurious cherry scent. No synthetic smells whatsoever, just pure, soft, and a delight to wear.

Out of the bottle, is one of my favorite scents i have in my collection. definitely a 9/10-10/10 fragrance in terms of scent. projection isn’t awful either, i do 5 sprays to school and 6-7 if im going out. for some reason it smells much different on my skin and idk how to feel about it, its almost like a bath bomb scent. definitely smell it on skin before you buy it.

I smelled this fragrance over a year ago in Chicago, and my friends and I loved it. I found a bottle this summer, and it is my all time favorite scent. For all of you concerned about performance for the price, it has very good performance for a mind games fragrance. It lasts about 6 hours on my skin, and a day on my clothes.

This is such an interesting take on a cherry perfume. I love that I can detect all the major notes - cherry, amber, blonde woods. In my imagination, even the violet leaf is there :D It is very slightly sweet, but very intoxicating. But for that price tag, it could have been more concentrated so that it would last longer.

OMG, how good it is! I love it particulary, because cherry is not dominant, it is nicely balanced with florals, amber and woods. For me it is sophisticated scent and wearable all year round (yes, even in summer, preferably in summer nights). And if you layer it with Atlas Fever (by Ex Nihilo) it is a heaven on earth 🔥

Just recently picked this up, first compliment I was given is that it smells like a heavenly dr.pepper, and I’m all for it. The dry down is humble yet comforting and confident. Immediately ranked highly in my collection. If you cant grab a sample, it is an expensive blind buy but you will not be dissapointed. 11/10

This is beautiful, Its very heavy on the cherry and amber which I like. I get this nostalgia when I would eat cherry flavored jello. I always loved cherry flavored things like candy. This is not super sweet but the chery is so juicy and savory. It reminds me also of those pitted cherries in syrup. So yummy. 8.6/10

This is black cherry koolaid made super sexy with blonde woods and sweet amber in the drydown. The cherry isn’t overly chemical or medicinal but it’s very ripe smelling. Is one of the longer lasting ones from Mindgames along with the forward, gambit, and Sissa. Layering this with ATH forbidden is 🤯 10/10

Sexy cherry in a bottle. Perfect for date nights and I could see it being a signature scent for the winter. Someone said it reminded them of a cherry chapstick and I could see that, mixed with woods to give it that masculine appeal. 10/10 fragrance but if cherry isn’t your thing, then this isn’t for you.

I had the discovery set last year and French Defense was not on my wish list. I am so glad I revisited it. I thought I was tired of Cherry centric fragrances. This one is a rich black cherry with a beautiful woody dry down. So much more wearable 5 minutes after the opening. I am so happy to have it.
