Mentor

Mentor highlights multiple notes that vie for the limelight, but end up blending together to create a very deep, thick scent. This immediately means it won't be for everybody, not that anything really is. It's dense, powerful, and it lasts. Absolutely cold weather locked, you don't want to wear this in the heat. I personally love the way this is blended, though I have seen some people describe it as a "soup", which I can understand when trying to consider the perspective of one who'd dislike this fragrance. The ingredients are quality, but the blend itself may challenge eager noses to try and differentiate all the notes. That is to say, some notes may lack a clear distinction compared to the others. Undeniably noticeable is the caramel and plum you get upon application, with the supporting amber rapidly coming in. As it develops, the boya oud and coffee become more prominent, but merge together with the other notes and create a cloud of thick and rich heaviness. The type that will almost certainly be cloying if you dare to overspray. I own a bottle, and as of writing, it's my only full bottle from Mind Games. Though there a couple of others I do like, this is my favourite from the house, having smelled a good chunk of its catalogue. I have yet to smell a genuinely "bad" Mind Games fragrance, but I was mostly whelmed by the rest of its offerings - finding they range from "okay" to "good, but I wouldn't buy it" - save for Mentor, which is a genuine love, and possibly French Defense and Kingside.

A gourmand for those who don't like gourmands. Never considered myself a gourmand lover, but Lord have mercy this is amazing, signature scent worthy for me. Opens up super fruity and oud-y. You smell the plum, caramel and italian lemon, but they blend together extremely well with the oud to give a mature *but not grandma/grandpa* smell, but instead sophisticated and well put together. What's super interesting about the oud, is that you can SMELL IT, and it doesn't go away, but it's blended with the top and bottom notes so well that it's helps support everything instead of it being overwhelming or gross. Eventually on the dry down, the oud keeps blending even better, giving the smell of a delicious aged wooden coffee table that's been varnished recently, to a beautiful dark red resinous color(I know I'm talking color, but it's the only way to describe it). You get the smell the of strong caramel coffee sitting on that table, but it's very light whiffs, and of course you still smell the fruitiness of the plum while the amber and tonka keep everything sweet, but not in an overwhelming way. So well balanced, so luxurious, never thought I'd call a fragrance on a man(me) delicious, but it's delicious.

I am very picky with fragrances, I was not impressed with any new releases the past year, But this was the one i kept going back to when testing out fragrances in stores..I really liked it, But the price was just too steep for me to purchase it until now..I was able to find a good deal on it. I think this fragrance would be really popular if it wasn't for the price. It's a beautiful slightly sweet salted caramely plum & citrus fragrance wrapped in this darkness..I agree with @boguslaw the opening is so freaking good, But not a big fan of the rose/oud dry-down, It takes a perfect opening & drags it down in the dry-down. If this fragrance stayed the opening for the entire fragrance..It would be AMAZING and I would gladly pay an arm and a leg for it! Overall, It is still a stellar masculine fragrance. You know how some influencers try and glaze a basic fragrance and say that it is for the cool "dark and mysterious" type of Man Women love?? Forget all those..THIS is that fragrance.

Ok this is my 2nd hand test for these... So far out this might be my favorite of the 4 newest Mind Games. At first I thought it may have been Prodigy but the dry down didn't work for me. And as much as I wanted to love Counterplay, it is kind of sickeningly one-note, sweet melon to me. And Opera Mate has a beautiful nuttiness that I haven't smelled in perfumery before - but I also think I'd get sick of smelling that so much. So far, this one is reading as Unisex to me, but goes more in the masculine direction as it dries down. It's nice but I don't need a full bottle. The scent to me is about 7.5/10. The quality smells nice enough, but I think $400 is a reach (for any of these). Sometimes Mind Games fragrances need to grow on me though. I'll keep testing them.

This is an intriguing scent.. When I first tested this I did not like it. Now I love it. Certified head turner, compliment getter and cold weather monster. Off the rip its a bit strong and spicy but this fragrance evolves and takes you on a journey with it. The projection and longevity are beastly and its super dark and masculine. Definitely not a safe blind buy, a bit more mature, and a better cold weather night time wear (the colder night the better it seems to smell). Its strong so a little goes a long way. I am not sure what other people are saying, it is a sophisticated, complex scent that evolves throughout the day. Almost every time I've worn it i've received compliments and had people stop and ask me what I was wearing.

Mentor was just gifted to me. And man I want to love this one as my 1st entry to Mind Games. The presentation is insane 🔥🔥🔥 However the fragrance is giving “is this a bad batch” or what am I missing? I’m getting a straight oud immediately very light on the amber and off and on my nose gets a little plum whiff. But unless I’m completely nose blind which I’m not, “My” Mentor bottle isn’t projecting at all. It’s flat almost 5 mins into it. At the price point on the receipt I’m expecting this to punch me a lot harder than this. Maybe it needs to sit and I come back to it after a month or so. This is my experience so far. I’ll update later. Is anyone else having this issue with Mentor and other Mind Games?

This fragrance nor this house is not for the curious or occasional fragrance buyer. A true niche brand via price, presentation and scent accords. The price is 95% why people speak harshly about the house and this scent. Remember, unlike many of your designer and luxury brands this is all they do. No clothes, hats, belts or cosmetics. Just bold and energetic fragrances and they do it well. It's Amber heavy with floral notes and some coffee. This is a dark scent meant for cooler environs. You will stand out with this scent. If you stand by your rack and department store favorites, this is not for you. Only a fool would blind buy Mind Games fragrances.

Great pickup for me. It smells really good!!! Really shines in cooler months but can be worn when ever. In the hotter months Id say its a night time fragrance for when the day temps dropped. I wore all summer because I be in and out of climate controlled enviorments and I only do 2 sprays. I wouldn't wear this for outside activities in the summer day. It last a long time. I get all day out of it and it stays on my shirt forever. When I 1st got it. It was something weird about it but Ive had it a few months now and WOW!! I get heavy plum from my batch and this stuff is 🔥 it is decanter size copp worthy to me.

I must emphatically state that any comparison between this fragrance and Bond No. 9’s Nomad is inaccurate. Nomad is distinctly defined by its bright, pink-rose-forward profile. In contrast, Mentor is a masterpiece of an ambery scent, built around resinous plum and crowned with a comforting, warm caramel top note. The subtle coffee note is so seamlessly woven into the oud and tonka bean base that it's almost undetectable. Mentor possesses a powerful and unique identity, making it the perfect choice for fall and winter evenings where it leaves a charming and seductive scent sillage.

This is not the same as bond nomad, i own both, it is similar in the sense it's a fruity oud but that's about it The real distinct thing to me is the coffee note, I love coffee notes so perfect for me and it works great with the other notes in the frag. It does a fantastic job of balancing the sweetness Its a great complex blend of the plum, coffee, woods, and a little oud. Performance is above average. It smells expensive and well blended Its a solid pick up if you enjoy dark ambery gourmandish ouds.

Mind Games’ most powerful winter fragrance. Very strong in Oud and Amber with notes of caramel and dark fruit taking a backseat. Very potent in cold temperatures and instantly captures the attention of those around you. Would not recommend in the office setting. Does smell a bit designer-y over niche however. I love wearing this one to theme parks because it instantly counters the bad odor of anybody around you. lol

I’ve been waiting to review this. This is my 2nd fav frag of 2024 behind oud cadenza. I’ve always wanted a plum frag but I didn’t see any out there that appealed to me. This is one of the sexiest frags I own. And it’s different enough to stand out. It’s one of those frags you just have to get your nose on to appreciate it. I think it’s the most niche frag in the Mind Games lineup. 10/10

A decadent and very high quality fragrance. It's heavy and there's a steep "spray curve". Meaning, two sprays are perfect, but three could be overwhelming. It's nuclear and will envelope you in a rich scent cloud. Reminds me of oud for greatness in that way. I can still smell it on my skin after a shower. I personally love it but it's definitely a cold weather fragrance.

the opening is really nice smells like a sexy plum with caramel, although the drydown is pretty generic on me, mostly amber and a slight bit of oud, last a looong time, its a fragrance that grows on you, on first wear i thought it was nothing special but after a few more wears i think its really nice. Mind games made a masterpiece of a fragrance. It’s classy and mature scent and long lasting.perfect for winter and autumn. It’s unisex but it leans more masculine. 7-12 hours longevity and 5 hours sillage. It totally depends from person to person. If you enjoy coffee.plum.caramel and oud. Than this the only fragrance you need

This is so smooth. Caramel comes out not too sweet, more like caramel liquor. Very grown up and delicious. The dry down is so good Sillage and longetivity are also amazing, oud is not animalic. Amber note I’m not sure about, maybe because there’s also tonka, and my nose picks up tonka. It really is amazing. Very unisex too

An absolute beauty, I am wearing this to my wedding in 3 days, and my fiance is wearing prodigy. Both are STUNNING! Mentor is truly one of the finest fragrances in the history of mankind. 10/10 Smell 10/10 Longevity 8/10 Sillage (which I prefer) I think this will go down in history as one of the greats.

A versatile cool-weather fragrance. Although the salted caramel, coffee and amber notes make this a great option for date nights, the plum and overall "fruitness" provide freshness to the opening, making it a suitable option for daytime wear as well , provided that the temperature is not too high.

I have been waiting for ya’ll to add this to the site. Longevity is amazing. One of the few fragrances I can smell on myself without 10 sprays. This is delicious but not in a completely edible way. Thank God it is still, recognizably, a perfume. This is how I wish French Defense performed.

So, firstly, this is an extremely well blended, refined fragrance. To me, it's very bottom heavy in terms of the primary notes. I get a beautiful blend of caramel, coffee, amber, tonka and Oud. It's a 💯 BOSS fragrance. Not for the high school halls. Sexy AF. 10/10

UPDATE: Yeah, so this didn't age well. I picked up a FB 😭. I'm happy. Delicious! The dry-down reminds too much of Prodigy. I feel that adding Mentor may be a bit redundant in my collection. For those that don't own Prodigy, then Mentor would be a worthy pickup.

Great fragrance, i layer it with french defense om cold days and just wow, its a compliment getter. its very seductive and comfy and warm but also the oud brings everything and makes it louder. its not an animalic oud to me at least. 9/10

Very nice, smooth scent. A smoother version of TF Noir Extreme, which I have and love. It would have to be heavily discounted in price, though, for me to pull the trigger on fb. Good longevity and medium sillage. I like it.

Absolute banger. Got it for my birthday this past November and it stands neck at neck with my favorite from the house; French Defense. Gives a masculine leaning high end jam/preserves vibe. Just stunning.

Very nice fragrance. However, it reminds me of MONTALE Ristretto Intense Cafe. It is definitely more refined and subtle than Montale RIC, but a redundant purchase for me.

I'm obsessed with this. I want to wear it all the time. I don't get black phantom from this other than the vibe. Ordered a second bottle.

Mentor is a very nice choice for those who like modern coffee scents. Coffee is the only note that I am able to distinguish separately, the note that stands out. The rest of the notes blend together very well, smoothly flowing from one to the next. There is slight sweetness from caramel and tonka bean, slight warmth from amber and resin, slight woodiness from sandalwood. I do not get much oud or lemon, maybe a little bit right after spraying. Although all the main notes that I get are usually associated with warm and heavy scent, Mentor still has some airiness to it, almost molecular in nature (this may be in my head since I recently tested many new releases with this molecular quality). I find mentor to be unisex with good longevity on clothes and moderate to light sillage.

I walk into the beach residence of a respected recluse. It's a clean and modern room inside of an old building. Coffee, biscuits, dusty trinkets, resinous furniture, and a restrained sweetness permeates the air. This is not a home -- but a place of energized comfort. An interesting fragrance. Has great sillage and lasts a very good amount of time. I feel like a space, more than a person, suits this fragrance best. It seems to me to capture the essence of "active listening." Not as sweet to my nose as others seem to have experienced. One of the few fragrances that I have smelled that has been able to maintain a sense of the coffee the entire time -- without the fragrance being solely about the coffee. A solid "Like."

This is likable enough. Not super creative, but wellblended and sleek. Leans slightly masculine. It's fairly linear but opens more peppery and spicy on me. Notes are varied but compact. Coffee and citrus are not present for me, and while caramel is, it seems to add a syrupy sweetness. Combined with the green notes it almost gives cough syrup. That softens a bit through the wear. I'd expect more given the price point. I don't get the references to Black Phantom. Black Phantom is spooky and gorgeous while this is mid. It does smell expensive though.

Tried this one yesterday and while pleasant, it reminded me of something else I have. After a while it hit me! Bond no 9 Nomad! Not as bright( plum is darker than the black currant +pear) and the oud here can be a little... sweaty(maybe dense is a better word). I prefer Nomad, but this one isn't a bad option for someone who doesn't own Nomad. Long lasting and decent sillage, I think this leans slightly masculine (I also think frags can be worn by anyone, anytime, anywhere)

Although there's no rose in this, this smells like a coffee-rose-oud combo, sweet, really elegant and perfect for formal settings. Does not smell that challenging compared to other rose/oud fragrances, performance is through the roof. Huge projection and longevity is 12hrs+ for sure. 8.5/10

This is my favorite mind games perfume, and I'd smelled many at malls. Usually, I'm not crazy for a spicy, sweet, amber scent, but it works well here. I would never purchase a full bottle, but it's good for what it is.

With a note profile featuring plum, caramel, coffee, and oud, the composition trades simple sugary accords for a more resinous and intellectual narrative. The brand often emphasizes the strategic interplay of their ingredients, and Mentor appears to be a calculated play on the tension between light citrus flashes and a formidable, resinous base. The question remains whether this complex arrangement can maintain a cohesive balance on the skin, or if the density of the oud and resins will ultimately overshadow the gourmand elements. Let’s see if this fragrance makes a grandmaster move or if it ends up in a stalemate. Opening: The opening is fruity, sweet, and warm. The primary notes I get are plum, caramel, coffee, and amber, with the plum and caramel leading the way. Performance: The initial projection within the first hour is incredibly strong, possessing the capacity to easily fill even a larger room. Remarkably, after about three to four hours, the performance remains largely unchanged and just as potent as it was upon the initial application. Even after seven to eight hours, while the projection eventually draws in to about three to four feet, it continues to reach out from the body with a noticeable presence. Likewise, the scent trail softens during this later stage but remains entirely perceptible to those in the vicinity. The composition ultimately provides a formidable journey on the skin, lasting approximately ten hours in total before finally becoming a skin scent. It is a persistent and commanding performer that ensures its dark, gourmand narrative is heard clearly throughout the majority of its life. When to Wear: Mentor is a definitive fall and winter fragrance that is best suited for evening wear. Its warm and sweet profile makes it a premier choice for special occasions like date nights, where the indulgent plum and caramel can create a rich, inviting atmosphere. Simultaneously, the deep, woody, and Middle Eastern inspired profile provides a level of sophistication that makes it perfectly suited for formal wear. However, this is a fragrance that must be worn with intention; its sheer density and resinous weight mean it is not well suited for casual wear, and it would absolutely be overbearing in an office environment. It is a composition that thrives in the cold air and structured settings, requiring a certain level of occasion to truly harmonize with its surroundings. Blind Buy: Mentor is not a safe blind buy. This lack of safety stems primarily from the sheer weight of the composition; it is an incredibly heavy fragrance that will simply be too much for many people to wear comfortably. Furthermore, the distinct Middle Eastern vibe it possesses, driven by the prominent oud and resinous accords, carries a specific character that will not be appealing to everyone. While the plum and caramel provide a familiar sweetness, the darker, more industrial elements create a challenging profile that requires appreciation for more than just simple sugar. Given the high cost of entry for the house and the polarizing nature of its density, sampling is strongly recommended before committing to a full bottle. Final Verdict: I feel Mentor is one of those fragrances that will inspire intense devotion in some, while leaving others to wonder exactly what the appeal is. Personally, I can understand why it would resonate with many; it possesses that heavy, sweet, and attention grabbing Arabic inspired profile that is currently dominating the market. However, even as someone who is very well acquainted with loud, heavy, and Middle Eastern style compositions, I found this particular iteration to be a bit much. While the technical quality is undeniable, the sheer density of the resins paired with the aggressive sweetness creates a profile that demands more than I am personally willing to give. I think it is a great fragrance for a specific type of enthusiast who thrives on maximum presence, but it is not one I am going to be adding to my collection. Ultimately, Mentor is a well crafted piece of the Mind Games puzzle, but for me, it lacks the effortless mastery that makes a fragrance like Blockade so special. TLDR 6 hours in this is a nice soft soapy rose with just a pinch of Oud. Lovely but what we have to go through to get here ... Meh. This is not an easy one to describe. Mostly I am getting rose, caramel, celery seed, and chili pepper. This one feels like it was thrown together at the last minute because there was a deadline or they picked a random person off of the street, handed them a bunch of ingredients with instructions to assemble a fragrance without smelling any of it. It is soft which is nice but do I want to smell like this? I believe the answer is no. Also IMO from a price standpoint Mind Games has crossed into 🤣🤣🤣 territory. I am not here to judge anyone or tell anyone how to spend their money. There comes a point where the price paid for a product is based largely on ego. Because the product in question is all hat and no cattle. This is one of those products. Why would anyone purchase this? It isn’t very good, like it is different just for the sake of being different. Then there is the sheer number of outstanding fragrances that cost a fraction of what this does. Hell and the number of fragrances that are more expensive but smell good and are inviting to others. Once past the jarring opening, which took a couple of hours, this becomes a still somewhat strange rose fragrance. If you love this, wear it. If you are looking to flex your bankroll but don’t want to crawl over broken glass to get there get you some BR540, the red bottle, and call it a day. That or really commit to the filth and pull the trigger on a bottle of Baz. A barrel full of stale urine and unwashed genitalia that Baz.

This isn’t a bad perfume by any means — it’s a bold, rich take on caramel, rose, and oud. But I expected more nuance and sophistication, especially from a house like Mind Games, which I’ve come to admire for their unique and inventive blends. Compared to the finesse of Gardez and the green-spicy intrigue of Gambit, Mentor feels rather linear and safe. It leans into a familiar territory that many other perfumes have explored — and frankly, explored better. What it lacks, in my opinion, is the layered storytelling that makes a scent unforgettable. There’s no twist, no unexpected softness or hidden depth — just a straightforward sweetness wrapped in Oud and florals. To be fair, the bottle was shipped by air, and the summer heat is nothing short of brutal. I’ve decided to let the perfume rest for a while in a dark, cool room to see if time and temperature help it open up more gracefully. Perhaps it will surprise me after it settles. But for now, Mentor feels like a missed opportunity in a line that usually excels at crafting complexity and character. Update: Whoever downvoted my comment — it won’t change my opinion. Every perfume in my collection was purchased with my own money; I am not endorsed or sponsored by any brand. I stand by my view that Mentor is a cloying caramel‐heavy dupe of Tony Iommi Monkey Special, and it’s certainly not the best offering from the house.

What a bipolar fragrance. The opening is a fantastic syrupy fruity amber. That quickly turns into a rose oud. I hate the rose oud combo. This is one of the better rose ouds but nevertheless, not at all what one would expect from the notes. I also noticed there’s no real nuance here. Sort of a hammer of a fragrance. For the price I expected more sophistication

I really enjoyed this at first, but as I've gone through my 10ml sample... I've grown to dislike it. It performs almost too well and seems to leave a trail behind me as I walk through a room. I'm sure some enjoy that, but I prefer more intimate sillage. It's also cloying as all hell and can be overwhelming after a while. Just too rich for me.

This smells almost identical to lataffa yara moi, I have no idea what it’s duping so I can’t speak on that. Mentor is ever so slightly sweeter and adds a coffee note for the first 15 minutes. I am a Mind Games glazer but for me this is a disappointment. If you really love the caramel and amber dry down just save 400 dollars and get yara.

I’ve tried two perfumes from this brand, and both were really good in terms of quality. I think they deserve a respected place in the niche category. This perfume is too sweet for me, so my opinion is negative, but its performance is very good.

this absolutely dries down to a rich almost pure rose scent on my skin. Very odd when I look at the notes above. I'm not a huge rose note fan, when it's so prominent, so this one is not a favorite. Does anyone else get rose?

Caramel, cardamom, tonka and amber/resin. But the price is wild a remember smelling something very similar to this that was half the price.

This mentor is a piece of crap by mind games. I just got it last week from Maxaroma and it is smell just like cheap powder and water.. Those YouTubers and even people here on Fragrantica are pushing it and recommending it because I am sure they got it for FREE..they are not honest with the viewers at all.. please people sample first before buying and spending so much money on this cheap powdery crap...and the longevity is not more than 40 to 50 minutes at all...

not for men. it’s definitely more for women. a bit too strong on the coffee but when it subsides it becomes very rose and oud in a seductive way.

It is horrible to my nose. It has that fixative chemical that makes a perfume project and last longer, but it overwelms the smell itself.

Shoutout to my buddy who gave me a sample of this with my Delphinus purchase. Onto the review, SMH man, schills will not tell anyone that these mind games fragrances have the same overly sweet, syrupy & ambery composition as Mancera’s that you can get a 120ml of for like $70-80 bucks. Does mentor smell good? Yes. Is it worth $400? Fuck no! This smells decent, but it is not worth the price. It smells like a resinous caramel coffee with oud in the background. You can make up a Mancera called “mocha aoud” and put the mentor juice in the bottle and most of us would believe that this is from Mancera. The only reason why I have a mindgames bottle of the forward which I love, is because I got it for 50% off, which is the high end of what this brand’s quality should cost. This company really is out here playing mind games with us lol
