Palo Santo

If you're looking for a fragrance that nails Palo Santo, it's this. The cinnamon leaf is pretty prominent too, but other than that this is just straight Palo Santo. I love it, but it's super niche. Definitely grabbing a full sized SOMETHING by this house soon. They are local to me and doing some really cool stuff.

First, if you’re buying Mizu products buy from them directly! Their packaging is beautiful, thoughtful, comes with a personal handwritten note. Feels like you’re opening a special gift from a friend. This review is for the oil version. I haven’t tried the edp. I often burn palo santo at home and was looking for an oil that captured the same, simple scent of the actual wood: sweet, dry, warm, milky. Mizu’s palo santo oil blend has a fair amount more action going on than simple palo santo. But it’s the opposite of the sweet, dry, warm, milky combo. The smell of the still-wet oil on the skin is a little confused for the first couple seconds, but it quickly turns into a thoughtful, cohesive, calming scent. But it’s much much more earthy and masculine than I could’ve anticipated. This isn’t a “cozy” scent to me so much as it is contemplative and grounding. To follow up on the last comment, it doesn’t smell like toothpaste. There’s not mint happening here. The oil does smell quite crisp and almost astringent, cool, oily rather than dry or dusty like dried wood (obviously, it’s an oil, can’t hold that against it) and more herbal rather than milky. I can smell a faint trace of the actual palo santo oil, and as the oil dries it thankfully comes more into the foreground. However it stays more cool and medicinal than I was hoping for. I saw cinnamon listed in the notes and imagined something dusty and warm. But it’s cinnamon LEAF, which is likely why it actually feels rather green, and herbal. (Imagine rolling fresh leafy herbs between your fingers until the leaves wilt and release their fragrant oil on your hands. That’s the vibe.) Also I personally struggle with vetiver so shame on me for buying something with vetiver listed. I think that also contributes to the masculinity of this scent. So here’s a trick though—I layered this Mizu oil with Poesie’s Madar perfume oil (a very sweet, milky, rice pudding scent that is too cloying on its own but mixes beautifully with bitter scents) and incredibly the mix of the two oil blends smells VERY similar to the exact palo santo wood I love so much. Or a close and interesting interpretation. Mizu’s wood oils in the palo santo mix are beautiful, and the cozy creamy oils in the Poesie oil drown out the medicinal notes of the Mizu, so the effect is just wood and milky almost cinnamony warmth. It’s lovely!!! So I’ll actually be wearing this a lot. Also, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to a masculine person who likes palo santo. Or anyone who likes to smell strongly herbal, like you might after leaving an expensive massage, still in your towel, still shimmering with oil.

It’s a very unusual scent. The wearability is quite low, but it’s perfect for anyone who enjoys something curious and experimental. The fragrance has layers—there’s a floral note in it, extremely intense, though I just can’t recall which flower it is. There’s also a hint of greenery and wood, all accompanied by a cool, dry, slightly spicy feeling throughout. It’s the first time I’ve smelled anything like this, but it’s definitely not an easy scent to get used to

Smells of cinnamon. Soft but not too spicy, it has a cooling smell to it despite being a spice. The scent transitions subtly into a gentle bonfire in the woods smell. Then settles into a light vetiver. It is a calming scent that reminds me of being in a national park in California in the cool Fall morning air. I think this is appropriate for day or night.
