Voodoo Child

I was a lucky winner in the MojoMagique interview giveaway and I've been anxiously awaiting my generous gift in the mail. Today it came! Voodoo Child is a pole through the bayou in the deep, humid woods on a night when the moon is dark and earth's magical energies have you turning inward. If I inhale and close my eyes to imagine, I can almost sense the heavy steam, rising up from the still, life-teeming, dark waters and feel a trail of lazing moss reach to caress my skin...asking me without words to stay...right...here...forever. There's a "haziness" about Voodoo Child...something slightly salty and doughy that can almost be chewed. A sensual, lip-licking cream...floating to the head of something earthy and deeply mysterious. It's spicy, warm and heavily dosed with heavenly vanilla yet there's something "green" living within. Something that feels alive and almost serpentine..the way it undulates back and forth under my nose..somewhere between lightness and darkness. And then, tucked deep within is an innocent kiss from some night blooming floral covered by a softly billowing blanket of what I can only describe as bananas and skin musk. There you have it....all conceptual but that's my favorite way to describe my scent experiences. And honestly, Voodoo Child seems to be blended too well to pick it apart into distinct notes. Years ago, I had a small bottle of a perfume oil, called Wiccan Altar Oil. I am reminded of it a bit by Voodoo Child. I am also reminded of one of my favorites....KIORI...and I'm surprised to not see Patchouli listed in Voodoo Child. I have never been to New Orleans, but I have been taken there today....so thank you again to the lovely folks at MojoMagique for your generous gift. I had the pleasure of conversing by email with John Kennedy, one of the creators, and what a genuinely nice person he is.

What an addictive fragrance! I'd also like to thank MojoMagique for this gem, and I'm looking forward to finding retailers in my country that carry this brand. Voodoo Child looks simple but it's actually really complex. It's very warm, balsamic, creamy, smoky, syrupy and slightly leathery, but also fresh in an odd way. Its freshness is a little boozy, and salty, like Hollie said, and I also notice some banana and cucumber nuances in it. All these elements turn the blend into something lush and natural; not natural-clean; rather natural-wild. I remember another fragrance with a beautiful mossy accord by Chaillan, a Private Collection flanker, Jasmin White Moss, but that one was greener and much more floral, and Voodoo Child is intriguing and oriental, transporting, almost otherworldly. This is totally subjective but it somehow reminds me of what Hendrix said in the eponymous song: "If I don't meet you no more in this world, then..." Like a starry sky reflecting in the bayou, and the bayou itself, earthy but ethereal, luminous but dark, crystalline but muddy.

This is one of those scents that will make you stop what you're doing and huff your wrist for the rest of the day! It's olfactory magic, with notes so well blended that they seem to gently glide in and out of view. Vanilla and leather hit you on first application, with the leather moving back to make room for something cool, almost aquatic and very fresh, but warm and supple at the same time. The rose and wood notes (cedar?) arrive, and it's like crossing from a verdant green field into an untamed jungle, slighty feral and lush, and most definately un-tamed. Voodoo Child lives up to its name, mysterious and almost un-knowable. Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous!

Voodoo Child creates quite a hypnotic spell. This vanilla based rose with a smidgen of leather is expertly blended to please any gender. I use the term blend loosely, as on me, this gem is the sum of it's parts without any note overpowering the others. Nice longevity, and in a word, spellbinding. This fragrance is slightly addictive, I must say! I won a bottle of Voodoo Child and I have worn it three times. I wanted to give a really honest review so I waited to try it out a few times, really wear it and see how it sat with me. The first immediate scent is the rose which is blended so well with the vanilla that it makes the rose seem like sugared rose on a beautiful wedding cake. The patchouli chimes in and stays there then later comes on full strong and rich. I noticed the patch came out when I was heated, and it really sang. If you are not a patch lover do not wear this fragrance! To me the fragrance is absolutely unisex. I can see someone young 20s wearing it to Coachella and fitting in with the vibe of a festival, free and wild. This is a fragrance that is going to make a statement, but a fun statement. Not for a job interview, not for a serious occassion at all. This is for a fun date night, going out to a blues club, having a sexy coffee date. This is definitely a little bit wild and a whole lot sweet and sassy.

Firstly, this is a fragrant incarnation of the idea that beauty is fleeting. I'm not sure whether it is the fault of the roll-on application, edt concentration, cold climate in the place I live or my own skin. The sad fact is that I can't wear this one globally, because I barely smell anything after half an hour. Also projects very gently, but this is not necesarily a drawback. It's a pity that it's so short-lived, because the scent itself is just lovely. Vanilla and leather create an intimate feeling and rose gives it some freshness. These are among my favorite notes, and it is so simple yet mysterious to melt them together. What is most interesting- this fragrance is said to recreate the ambience of a bayou in Louisiana, which is very exotic to me. I live in a rather cold north European country. I wear this fragrance on my wrists at home to transport myself to this far away place,it's almost a fairytale to me.

I wanted to love this perfume, and I did at first. The opening was amazing and pretty much what everyone else has said addicting and hypnotic, everything I was expecting it to be and more. Sadly, after only minutes it just smells like a mixture of vanilla and play-doh on my skin. Sometimes I get a whiff of beautiful vanilla but then I get that play-doh smell. It's a cool day, and I think I'm going to try this one again when it warms up and on my clothing only to see if that helps. There is no EDP which is what I usually buy. The smell does fade faster than what I'm use to and sits very close to the skin. I'd suggest sampling before you buy.

'Cause I'm a voodoo child, voodoo child Lord knows I'm a voodoo child, baby" I just returned from NOLA's French Quarter...having visited the oh-so-lovely Madame Aucoin's Perfume Boutique and been charmed by this Voodoo Child. I may have been primed to love this fragrance because New Orleans is the voodoo capitol...and I was feeling the spell in the air. The hot wind was blowing down Bienville Street and Voodoo Child came alive on my skin. The vanilla is almost boozy...like the vanilla you get off a whiskey cask, but the floral rose keeps it from getting too deep and overbearing. Spice and sweetness meld to present a creaminess topped by delicate floral rose. Honestly...it almost reminds me of the bananas foster at the Palace Café I enjoyed my last night...but make no mistake...it is not overly sugary...but it is enticing. So glad Voodoo Child put me under it's spell.

Sexy, mysterious and as another reviewer said, hypnotic. Love Pixie Rose and Magique too but this one has the best sillage and I love this beautiful, unique scent. My skin definitely picks up the anise but there's also vanilla, leather, woods. Such a deep, rich scent bordering on the darker side but not overpowering in any way. You will not smell yourself coming and going... definitely can be a great signature scent. Packaging is awesome and totally suits the fragrance. If this fragrance smelled like a color, it would be purple. Magical, mystical... love... can definitely hear Hendrix playing in the background...

Vanilla and a velvety leather.with some faint florals in the background. It's very close to the skin from the beginning. This is my favorite in the line. I'm a sucker for a good vanilla based perfume!
