**A Scent of Rarified Elegance: Molinard’s Forgotten Gem** To encounter this fragrance is to stumble upon a relic of perfumery’s golden age—a treasure so rare that even its empty vessels command prices fit for collectors. I count myself among the fortunate few to possess a complete set of Molinard’s attars, this exquisite specimen among them. Described as pure concentrates, they arrived with instructions for dilution in perfumer’s alcohol—a suggestion I, of course, disregarded. Why tamper with perfection? Today, we shall experience this rarity in its unadulterated, oil-born glory. Where does one begin with such a composition? The opening is nothing short of a love letter to the grand tradition of French perfumery—an era when roses were not approximations but absolutes and distillates, when amber carried the animalic whisper of true ambergris, and spices were so vivid they verged on edible. The first impression is one of decadence: a Bulgarian rose (or so I suspect), honeyed and opulent, thick as jam and twice as intoxicating. This is no mere impression of a rose, no fleeting watercolor sketch. No—this is the essence of a thousand petals, patiently distilled into a liquid so potent, so radiant, it verges on the spiritual. Then, the spices arrive—clove and cinnamon, as precisely measured as the seasoning on a flawlessly seared steak. They do not overwhelm but elevate, wrapping the rose in a embrace both warm and refined. A silken veil of heliotrope drifts in soon after, its powdery softness reminiscent of vintage face powder, or a silk violet scarf lending an air of old-world glamour. Jasmine and carnation weave through the heart, deepening the rose without ever stealing its spotlight. And beneath it all lies a base of sandalwood—real sandalwood, the kind that hums rather than shouts, its creamy richness serving as the perfect foundation for such opulence. A suggestion of ambergris lingers in the background, its musky glow amplifying the florals as though they were bathed in golden light. And then, the quietest murmur of musk—clean, supple, impossibly inviting. This is an attar in the grandest tradition: dense, sumptuous, and unapologetically lavish. It unfolds like molten silk, slow and deliberate, each layer more hypnotic than the last. To wear it is to be privy to one of perfumery’s best-kept secrets—though I must confess, my heart still belongs to the house’s vintage *Habanita*. Some loves, after all, are impossible to eclipse. PS The review is my own and it was edited by ai :)
