Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel

I agree with the review a few rows down which states that Molton Brown is often overlooked as a fragrance house, they produce amazing quality shower gels which leave your skin cleansed but not dry and fragrant for hours afterwards but I haven't tried other products such as their scented candles, etc yet. I've always loved anything which is supposed to be evocative of the sea or coast, I first discovered Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel in hand wash form in a designer outlet toilet, I could not stop sniffing my hands afterwards so I snagged myself a bottle of the shower gel. The shower gel smells so fresh and clean, salty mineral notes mixed with zesty bergamot and green/sappy fig leaf; I will shower in the morning or evening and still smell it lingering on my skin afterwards for hours, I began to crave the EdT to prolong the freshness of the shower gel and finally I got myself a bottle. The EdT smells much more crisp and peppery than the shower gel but that is in no way a bad thing, the opening is a brisk blast of begamot, sea minerals and pepper (its not listed but I can certainly smell it), its like standing near the shore at dawn during the height of summer; that "hot but salty refreshing humid" feel and smell? yeah, this is that in a bottle. After 30 minutes, the peppery note subsides and fig leaf emerges adding some fresh grassy greenery, the mix of minerals, zest from the bergamot and the fig leaf is like a breath of fresh air for the senses, it makes me think of being sat in a coastal garden drinking fresh lemonade or gin with a load of ice, its a real pick me up scent and this is exactly how it smells on me throughout wear. The longevity is ok, I can get about 6ish hours from 4 spritzes and I also get a moderate silage, its airy and fresh but it does have some heft to it, its quite a memorable scent. Office friendly, easy to wear casually and would work very well in a formal setting. I see some find it quite masculine but to my nose, it straddles the line of unisex perfectly and won't smell out of place on anyone. I can't wait for it to warm up more so I can wear this more, it'll be in constant rotation with a few Jo Malones and a few others, thats for sure! Future repurchase, but maybe I'll try the EdP next

This is a beautiful smooth, marine, woody fragrance, absolutely perfect for summer days. This is the perfect holiday fragrance for the beach and sea, it has salty marine notes with a soft green and woody dry down that smells clean and aromatic on the skin. The salty marine cypress notes make it quite an independent fragrance, it is similar to Tom Ford Costa Azzurra but I find it slightly sweeter and more smooth but both are great summer fragrances, this is a wonderful, more affordable alternative to Costa Azzurra. Longevity is not the best but as it is most appropriate for beach days, the subtlety works well for warmer sunny climates and a stronger, longer lasting scent could be applied in the evening, for summer nights, when this has worn off. 7.5/10

This is hands down my favourite aquatic perfume along with D&G Light Blue Intense. The combination of sea salt notes along with the cypress is just magically refreshing and the musk adds the much needed strength in terms of performance. Although the performance isn't a bomb, it's still pretty decent for a freshie. Stays close to the skin, though. If you wear it right after taking a shower with the same shower gel, you'll feel fresh the entire day, even on 40+ degrees days.

Five Stars! Or Five Balloons! This is chock-full of Fresh and Coastal vibes! So long lasting, amazing. I find this to be very feminine and don't know a man who would wear it, but then I guess they can market it as unisex if they wish. This came in a fabulous gift box of 24 full-size Molton Brown fragrances in eau de toilette, body lotion, hand lotion, and bath gel - my dear husband really surprised me and what a nice Advent Christmas gift!!!

I received a tester edt and it's exquisite! It's fresh, yet deep and nostalgic without being overbearing. It definitely reminds me of the island of Crete, Greece. Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel by Molton Brown is the closest scent I've come across to Dolce&Gabbana's discontinued "Masculine" fragrance. If there were more citrus, it would be even more similar. And it's also way more masculine than feminine.

I only get cypress and an oceanic time with this, and is so good. Smells identical to the popular body wash they carry- like spot on. And the body wash lasts pretty long(whereas this is stronger but lasts the same time). So I will keep buying the soaps and ship on this next time!

This is one of the best frags I've ever smelled. I just wish it lasted longer than a couple hours.

a very underrated, fresh aquatic fragrance with a hint of spice that dries down to a nice, cedar base. this was first given to me as a birthday gift a few years back and was one of my everyday fragrances. coastal cypress and sea fennel is something you can reach for every day simply because it just works. it’s projection is modest, and longevity is average, but that’s because this fragrance doesn’t try to do more than what’s necessary. a great fragrance for causal events, running errands, or days at the office due to its likability.

In my review for the other version of this, the Eau de Parfum, I was quite hard on it, mostly because I do not like it, but also because it has nothing to do with the homonymous shampoo, which is brilliant. But the Eau de Toilette.. This is remarkable (and very close to the shampoo). I am thoroughly impressed by how true to a carefree, refreshing, maritime and elusive summer breeze this is. 8.5/10

Beautifully fresh and clean smelling without being soapy. Bordering on masculine but just about floral enough to be unisex. Better for sunnier days, but really quite versatile. Predominant salty sea air and cypress, more citrus in the opening. Excellent fragrance.

Got it on sale for about 30$. Reason I wanted to try it is because I absolutely love the shower gel in the summer. Performance is, to put it lightly, not good. Saw someone else posting they put 20 sprays, and I can see that being accurate, but hardly think it'll help. I tried everything between 2-8 sprays and it just never lasts for longer than an hour or two. It's not nose blindness, I asked around. Turns into a skin scent after said time, and fades away from the skin after 3-4 hours aswell. Tried it on clothes, no real difference, think I had about 4 hours on a good, colder summer day. Scent is great, it's amazing for a warm summer day, if you can keep the bottle close to you and respray. It is however, very youthful. Havn't tried the EDP, which could be a savior should you really want the scent profile, but I'm sure there are better options out there based on the fact I tried an EDP from MB and it was also underperforming, just not as much.

This is a weird one on my skin, already from the opening. It starts as an aquatic scent with cypress notes, but I also pick up heavy sweet jasmine notes on the background. It’s making the scent a bit too sweet. I can identify also cardamom and cedar wood notes. The cedar wood is remarkably beautiful, I usually can’t stand wooden notes in perfumes. If it wasn’t for that heavy sweetness of jasmine, this would be an amazing summer scent. But then it would be purely masculine. I understand the perfume can develop differently on other people’s skin depending on their skin chemistry. I wish this was different on me!

This is very nice. I am glad Molton Brown started making fragrances, i love their shower gels. This one smells like a spa. It is relaxing and elegant, soft and carefree. It smells like air with a hint of salt. Pretty inoffensive. A bit more masculine than feminine, in my opinion. It is really pleasant and natural smelling.

I agree with wst that this teeters between a generic shower gel scent and something more elevated. The cypress and sea notes are nice, and I could see it working really well for a guy who likes aquatics and wants to branch out from the usual suspects without going full niche-weird. It's not for me, though.

Bland and mild marine aquatic. Maybe a woodsy nuance if you have a dog’s nose. Nothing much here folks. Go home 🏊♂️

I knew I had smelled this somewhere, then it hit me: 360 Red (Perry Ellis). I typed into reminds me of and sure enough someone else voted too, making mine the 2nd up vote. Also, this unfortunately isn’t a good thing. I liked it on paper so bought an official 7.5 mL, but when I sprayed it on skin it smells like the aforementioned 360, AKA a synthetic mess. I’m so glad I didn’t get anything larger, but disappointed I didn’t try on skin when I had the chance. The compared 360 was something I tried a few years back when I did a deep dive into frags, initially of course trying everything from clearance items on discount sites, to Ross cheapies. 360 was an example of a mega, ultra cheapie. Thankfully I got through the cheapie phase fairly quickly, but still grateful that I did go through it, for sake of background and comparison of variations of quality. So, long story short this particular fragrance is obviously a huge “no” for me, and sad to say I wasted $25 on it. It’s going into “Le trash” asap.

I’m glad I trusted my own instincts after sampling it at a local boutique. What Does It Smell Like? This fragrance opens with a fresh, slightly green burst—fig leaves mingling with a light citrussy lift from bergamot and a subtle spice from cardamom. Quickly, it transitions to its marine heart: oceanic and airy, but not in the overly synthetic or typical "blue" sense. There's a soft, breezy floral presence from jasmine and violet leaf, which adds texture rather than sweetness. The dry-down is where the magic really happens. The earthy vetiver, cypress and clean cedarwood blend with a subtle saltiness and musk, grounding the fragrance in a way that feels both invigorating and comforting. Performance & Versatility Now here's the surprise: despite being an aquatic Eau de Toilette, Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel performs remarkably well—especially on my skin. I live in a humid, coastal urban area, and I genuinely believe this environment amplifies the fragrance’s projection and longevity. It easily lasts 6 hours on my skin and even longer on clothes, like 8 hours max. What truly surprises me is how versatile it is across seasons. While it's a natural fit for spring and summer, it performs just as beautifully during early autumn. I don't know how; all I know is that it performs really well for what's known to be a summer scent, and to add to it, there’s something about its breezy, mineralic character paired with the light woody base that gives it staying power even as the weather cools down. It’s office-safe, easy to wear, and surprisingly layer-friendly. Whether paired with green, woody, or even some sweet or musky base scents, it adapts without clashing. Even when oversprayed, it remains smooth, never loud or cloying. Final Thoughts Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel may not be the loudest scent in the room, and that’s exactly its charm. It’s a fragrance that shines quietly, one that doesn’t need hype to validate its beauty. The way it works with my environment, mood, and skin chemistry makes it feel deeply personal—and to me, that’s the highest compliment you can give a scent. If you live near the coast, love a clean but characterful scent, or simply want a break from overly familiar compositions, I highly recommend giving this one a proper wear. Trust your nose—sometimes the best discoveries are the ones that don’t get all the noise.

I go 20 sprays with this, 16 on the body, 4 on the clothes!! To be fair to Molten Brown, they have made an EDP version, so I can't complain about performance on the EDT. Apart from that, I think this is a magnificent summer fragrance, perhaps underrated. Interestingly it uses the same floral heart (jasmine & violet) as Acqua di Gio, but here the jasmine somehow has a smoky edge - probably from cypress, although initially I felt there must be cade/birch in here. Casual, light-hearted scents don't often get much appreciation in comparison to more "grown-up" Orientals - I think this is a good example of one that doesn't get the credit it deserves. UPDATE: I recently tried the widely praised Kenzo EDT Intense, and it reminded me of this, but with added "food seasoning" pepper, and annoyingly nuclear performance.

Salt over a strong scent of pine and minerals. This isn't a calone-aquatic, this is a windswept-cold-northern-beach aquatic. Reminds me of Eau des Merveilles and Eau des Merveilles Bleue , though it lacks the sparkling orange of the former and the underlying amber of both. This is a "darker", more masculine version of those fragrances - it's still unisex, but it definitely pulls a little more from a traditional "men's" palette of notes. It doesn't seem to project much on me, and it faded in an hour or two on my skin. If I had to sum it up in a word, it would be "bracing" - like being in pine forest at night, the freezing air still, the ocean calling.

Molton Brown is overlooked in the fragrance community. Not sure why, perhaps because they market themselves as an overall mens wardrobe rather than a fragrance company? This is usually the case and people tend to get drawn to fragrance companies rather than grooming companies. My point being, Molton Brown does it right with this and 2 other fragrances(Russian Leather and Black Peppercorn). This is easy to wear, and so oceanic fresh for designer cost. Give it a try, it's in the same ballpark as Versace pour homme and Colonia Pura. That simple and fresh scent.
