Russian Leather Eau de Parfum

The smell of an old man's leather wallet, which has been long forgotten, as the old man went off grid years ago. He lives in a wooden cabin, in the middle of a Siberian forest. He lives off the land and doesn't need the western world for anything. Russian Leather (I refuse to call it by it's new name of "Dark Leather" - have some conviction Molton Brown!) presents the aroma of this old man and the cabin he lives in. Smokier than a roaring bonfire, leathery, woody, chypre tones, and a sharp note of pine, which gives a much needed burst of freshness. It is a perfect scent for a winter walk, whilst drinking some Russian Caravan tea and looking at wild deer through binoculars. Rugged and Outdoorsy, Russian Leather will make you feel warm, like a hug from a burly lumberjack. 8/10. It is a cracker, but it's only able to be worn in colder weather, as wearing it at summertime made me feel sick.

This is a fabulous underrated fragrance. I don’t understand why it does not get talked about more. It makes me think and imagine I’m in a pine forest next to a smouldering camp fire, wearing a high quality leather jacket. The scent is very long lasting particularly on clothing. Very classy and distinctive. Highly recommended!

One of my signature fragrances and first niche buys, Instantly fell in love with it when I smelled it. Extremely dark, not for people who dont like dark earthy and leathery scents. The leather's quality is absolutely amazing.

#138 of My Fragrance Journey - Molton Brown Russian Leather EDP: Fire on a frozen plateau This one doesn't ease into anything. It sets its size immediately and just holds there. The opening's sharp, almost medicinal, but never messy with it. Leather shows up first and stays the centre of gravity the whole way through - not softened into suede, not buried under sweetness. It actually smells like leather. Dry, a bit aromatic, textured enough that it never goes harsh on you. What makes that first stretch work is the balance - elemi adds brightness without going glossy, black pepper gives it energy rather than aggression, bergamot cuts through the density and gives the leather some room to actually be leather instead of fighting for space. Nothing in there feels like it's just decoration. About fifteen minutes in, something shifts - not louder exactly, more like it widens. Smoke settles into the grain of the leather. Pine comes in cool and resinous. There's earth underneath all of it. At some point it stops being a leather fragrance and starts being a whole landscape the leather happens to live in. That shift is genuinely well done. A lot of leather scents just lean on weight to feel important. This one uses contrast instead - Siberian pine keeps the smoke from turning oppressive, geranium gives it a clean lift that keeps the darker stuff moving instead of sitting there getting heavier by the minute. Take those green notes away, and I think the whole thing collapses into sludge. With them, it keeps breathing. That's the part I keep coming back to, honestly - it doesn't need to overdo anything to feel defined. The drydown follows the same logic. Black amber rounds off the sharper bits, vanilla shows up so quietly you almost miss it - not sweetness exactly, more like texture, just softening the leather without changing what it is. A bit of smoky juniper keeps it from going flat. It just gets more settled, more sure of itself, the longer it sits. Nothing shows up too early. Nothing overstays. It feels built rather than thrown together, and you can tell. Where it falls down a bit is the weather dependence. In the cold, this thing is enormous - fully articulated, every layer doing its job. In heat, that same density turns against it. The smoke gets thick, the leather loses its edges, and the whole careful balance just narrows into something heavier than it's meant to be. Wear this in summer, and you're not getting the same fragrance. It's also not exactly hiding anything new. Leather, pine, smoke, dark wood - it's all very recognisable territory, just executed with real skill. I found myself wanting one note that didn't quite belong, something that broke the pattern a little. Not because it lacks character - more because it's clearly precise enough to handle one more weird idea without falling apart. Still - what it does, it does properly. It never confuses loudness with confidence. Builds presence through proportion instead. Every transition feels earned, not announced. Powerful without turning theatrical, refined without going cold. Like good tailoring - nothing in it is asking for attention on its own, but together it all just works. I was quite disappointed. I don't get any leather, or really any distinct notes at all. Just a smell. It's not a bad smell, I just can't smell any leather, which I was really looking forward to. I did get like a juniper smell. I was looking for a remake of the real russian leather, and got a soft juniper eucalyptus smell. I'll just try and find some more coach leatherware1, which is astronomical in price. The leather note in that is true and unreal.
