Captain Eau de Toilette (1975)

My first knowledge of Captain was when I encountered a magnificent factice in Colonial Drug when they were located in Harvard Square in Cambridge. The distinct shape of the bottle, a striking edifice among factices. It was then that I was determined to own it. Unfortunately, a newer version was being sold that was not in this same bottle and was warned by the sales associate that it smelled somewhat different from the original. Thus, the search was on, and I finally located the bottle that I now own today. All this chat and no mention of how it smells, you ask? Well, I was certainly pleased with the contents as well. This is elegance that cuts through the vulgarity of modernity: lavender and sandalwood is the first to greet my nose upon application and I love the synergy between the two. Scent dyads rock: geranium and vetiver, jasmine and cedar, lavender and rose. There is something about lavender and sandalwood, however, that feels like satin to my nose. Captain has what I call a pliable feel, a grace, a sprezzatura even—this is no strident bullhorn of machismo. From its aromatic opening through its anisic-spiced and seasoned interior, down to its tenderly mossy base, Captain is a study in restraint. It's intended for warm handshakes and hugs, or intimate lean-ins and nuzzles.

I'm not so fond of vintage barber perfumes but this is ... wow. This is the masculine perfume par excellence, not animal masculine like Kouros, but a fearless manly perfume Superman! A very sparkling fougère, it opens very strongly, herbs, citrus and aldehydes with a very hard and solid base, real oak moss, vetiver and spices. What is striking about the "Captain" is the quality of the ingredients, oakmoss, lemon, coriander, nutmeg, violet leaf, rosemary, patchouli, civet, Indian sandalwood, a very nice doré tobacco, cloves, lavender, musk , tonka and a hint of vanilla. Many ingredients but mixed to perfection that it is almost impossible to break them down. An earthy, radical, green, balsamic atmosphere with a note of liqurizia .. A real hard but also refined and elegant, you can feel its green and luminous freshness but also its darker, earthy, dark and smoky air. The perfume is from 1975 but is it a perfume from the past? No, or rather not for me.The risk that people around you confuse him for an old aftershave is, it's an old school perfume that for some might seem like a defect but for me it is not. Rating: 9

This is the perfect perfume. There are no weak points, a perfume for all seasons, hot and cold, for all places and for all situations. It was the perfume of the great tailor Molyneux, when he died they produced it for the public, rare because it was very expensive. Now it is almost impossible to find and often not in good condition. Immediately you can feel the lavender, the conifers and castoreum, very balsamic. I feel cedar, pure Virginia cedar, here no iso and super, it did not exist yet, flowers and herbs. We are in an enchanted forest, SPLENDID, THERE ARE NO LIKE SCENTS. This is much better than the niche !!!

today found a (vintage) bottle of it. very nice classic buttt not dated. completely match with today taste while it is old school. open a little fresh and herbal lavender and spicy ginger and as times go piney aspect along with patchouli join and sit on slightly soapiness of oakmoss and cedar at this stage lavender subsides but spiciness herbaceousness and soapiness continued till the end.

More to add later but I just bought the last bottle in the 70's time warp perfume shop in Torremolinos resort Main Street where I also got my (and their) last bottle of GPH1 2003-2013. Amazing woody incense aftershave! I will use every last drop. Weird bottle and box straight from Star Trek but utterly unique smell. I will try to define it subsequently when words have found me!

What I get is a cutting crisp clean refreshing scent. notes I get are 1. ginger and pine (giving it a nice lime like scent) 2. subdued cinnamon cloves (for spice) and patchchouli all very well blended. A love.

So,so,so good! Real clean, but a lot of character, rough base of oakmoss and patchouli. The best in the after shave-ish style. Really impressive. Only the vintage, the new release is pure crap.

Edp? No, if you want the real Captain, it's not edp, look at the photo of frag., That's the real Captain, the others are worth nothing

The only one, true, Captain Molyneux is the perfume from 1975, the others are just vulgar imitations.

I had just ordered a new bottle of the EDP of this gem from USA. Can't wait to try it again.

New Captain of crap's ship. A shame.

Very soapy on application; dries down to a very distinct sandalwood, similar to the original Nautica. I set it next to Agua Brava and Sung Pour Homme for those mornings where I combine it with Ivory soap in the shower, Brut classic deodorant and Arko shaving soap to go with a "clean" scent that progresses quite nicely throughout the workday (and is very economical). Mine is in I think the newer bottle (nothing like the one pictured above as of this writing) that won't win any design awards - in fact, it reminds me of the bottles of Jordache knockoffs you can buy at dollar stores. Don't be fooled by that. This is a good cologne that can be had at a very reasonable price.

Bought some 8,5 ml splash bottles of the vintage version. Still smell okay to me but cannot compare to what it should be like. Anyway i find it quite enjoyable but it does not last very long for an edt. I get a pretty strong Anis note some hours in the dry down

Nice and overpriced. Performance is just okay. If you like Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, you'll like Captain Molyneux, but not as much as you like PRPH. Recommend saving your money unless you have money to burn.

THERE IS NOTHING TO COMPARE WITH 70'S CAPTAIN, ONLY THE PRODUCER AND THE NAME...THE SMELL IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. NICE BUT DIFFERENT.

I tried the Windex blue version of this based on reviews here. Clearly, this formulation is not the one that everyone raves about. I nearly ruptured my septum, trying desperately to smell anything at all but, to no avail. As near as I can tell, this is just colored water. Stay away from the blue stuff, it's a waste of money!

the new captain has drown down with his ship, this reformulation is a completly disaster, it ́s another perfume, there is no CAPTAIN MOLYNEUX left, even a simple drop of the original, i hope it passed away like they killed the masterpiece of the original, it deserves this

Oh Captain my Captain. This is a beautiful fragrance for men - and for me! It smells unisex to me. I can enjoy this scent as a woman on my self although I do admit that I love to get close to the man that wears this. It's soft subtle comfortable and cozy a fragrance for snuggling. In the 70s a lot of men wore Old Spice which was also very nice and a snuggling scent but this must have been a nice alternative. The opening starts off with the typical citrus. Then it progresses into a slightly spicy scent of ginger a little bit of coriander and cardamom and some anise. The heart is floral and here is where it becomes perfectly wearable for me as a woman. I think lavender is feminine despite the fact that many men's colognes contain lavender. It has an aromatic spiciness but always smells feminine to me. A purple flower heart is what this frag has. The other is violet. An orange blossom also appears. The fragrance remains soft and lovely for a long time before it begins to dry down and becomes all woods: sandalwood. There is also guaiacum wood very noticeable and very much a chypre. This is totally a chypre like women's chypre because of the oak moss. The moss scent dominates the base notes. This is a gorgeous fragrance and I'm glad to hear that it's still selling! I wear this in autumn and winter. Everyone loves how it smells on me. This is for chypre lovers.

Released in 1975, this classic has suffered some changes ranging from its clothes to its fragrance. And although it does not possess the same opulence from the heydays of perfumery, still remains a beautiful fougère. Contains notes of lavender, musk, lemon and marine notes accord. Some say that even after the reformulations, the notes of patchouli and vanilla were kept. My bottle was the ugliest version of all (and ended up going to my father’s wardrobe). It took me some time to discover which version it was, but now I know it is from 1994. When applied on the skin, its fragrance remembers the scent of aftershave lotions from the past, but this feeling is ephemeral, because Lavender is very strong and gives the idea of refinement. At the same time, there is a glimmer of something salty, as the appearance of seaweed, a slight salty air. It didn’t present a lot of evolution and the lasting was also not so good on my skin. After 4 hours, I couldn't feel the fragrance anymore. But is a great option for use after bathing or a day at the beach, a moment of relaxation, etc. I dare say that is a marine version of Pour Un Homme de Caron.
