Fougeres Marines

I bought Fougeres Marines simply because I read how close this is to Tommy by Tommy Hilfiger. This is also my first experience with Montale as well. Tommy is one of my all time favorite fragrances. I even have 5 back up bottles of the original formulations when they were made in Switzerland and the early NYC production dates pre-2010. I was surprised by how small the Montale bottles are. For some reason they looked like a can of hairspray online, but they are small. The bottle is also a very thin and light-weight aluminum. You cannot see inside the bottle to detect how much liquid is inside and the bottles do not come filled to the top and because it is so light, it almost feels empty in hand. I feel this presentation cheapens the experience and comes across as inferior quality to a thicker glass bottle. The sprayer has no cap, like CK One flankers. Moving on to the scent itself, it DOES smell like Tommy. The closest thing you will ever get to Tommy. This does smell great but IMO, Tommy smells better, especially in the dry down. Montale does not seem to last longer or project much better than current Tommy formulation however. Perhaps, my bottle needs to macerate. If this changes, I will update my review, but so far I would advise you to save your money and just buy Tommy.

I like it. It’s one of the few Montale scents that works for me and doesn’t have one of the typical few drydown formulas Mintale regularly uses. Sweet lavender mostly for me with a slight salty marine vibe on top brightened with vetiver. patchouli to darken it a tad. Comments here saying it’s missable and an 80’s / 90’s retro generic reproduction are NOT unwarranted. The performance regarding Sillage is under par for what it also should be but ironically again I forgive it. (If you read my reviews you would also realise that Montale is one of my pet loathes as a brand). So why do I like it - it’s simple, natural, well crafted (bar Sillage) and just the right amount of refresh for not horrendous money. I also have and class as similar Gendarme EDP, Pierre Guillaume Aqaysos, Mad et Jules Aqua Sextius, Lab on Fire Almost Transparent Blue and Norne Grev. All similar but justifiable to own as they are all different enough - clean refreshing scents - but they cost more and are funnily enough too in your face (not that that is a bad thing) - sometimes you just want that little personal pick me up that lasts a while in summer - this will do it nicely for me...

This is like if Creed had released Tommy in 2000 instead of Hilfiger/Lauder in 1994. I don't smell Fougères Marine as a "clone" of Tommy so much as an alternate universe version of this fragrance, a universe in which Tommy Hilfiger never released their signature masculine, and Creed released this instead—and called it Fougère Marine instead of Herbe Marine. It smells a cut above Montale in quality and composition. Certainly not very "Montale-like" in character. Instead, it's shimmery, bright, rich, yet also kinetic, buoyed by the air around me as I wear it. Imagine Tommy but greener, woodier (a solid vetiver core) and with a sizable synthetic ambergris accord (Cetalox, Precyclemone B) married to its flourishes of sweet apple and fresh laundry musks. Fougères Marine is easily one of the more gorgeous fragrances in my collection, undeniably well done and easy to wear. Backup bottle-worthy. Even my fiancée likes it, and she doesn't like anything.

This one here put the absolute biggest smile on my face the moment I smelled it! If you are a fan of the original "Tommy" by Tommy Hilfiger, then you need to have this in your collection! Waves of nostalgia hit me like nothing before when I first sprayed this, it instantly takes me back to first year high school in 1997 when Nintendo 64 was brand new and I was playing games on it non stop. This actually smells better than Tommy ever did, the quality here is just awesome! I am definitely curious now to try more from this house, but for now this is hands down one of my best blind buys ever made. This is practically a time machine in a bottle and damn does it smell great, almost had me getting all emotional with how spot on it is, but niche quality. Just simply in love with this stuff. Highly recommended as a blind buy even if you're not familiar with Tommy. This is what you call a timeless scent, my personal favorite from the 1990’s.

Okay I’m seriously starting to believe that Montale’s older releases simply focused on the legends of 90s & 00s in an effort to create niche company versions. Wood and Spices (2005) - undeniable similarity to Nikos Sculpture (1995) Santal Wood (2012) - A failed attempt (?) to create CH 212 Men (1999) And this, Fougeres Marines (2007) - similar to Tommy - Tommy Hilfiger (1995) and a maybe a bit vibes from Higher - Dior (2001). The scent is very good though, immediate throwback to teenage years, Millenium, and youth. Very different from most Montale’s known nowadays, and again I think the company made a sharp turn with Oud becoming the thing in western perfumery. If performance satisfies, may consider a full bottle, mainly because of nostalgic feelings it triggers. But currently I’d go for Tommy Hilfiger hands down given the price difference and not much value added.

Just came to confirm what’s already been stated... YES!!! This stuff takes you straight back to 1997. The peak of the Tommy craze! The good times in life when us 41-47 year old men were in jr high and high school chasing tail. The halls and classrooms REEKING of Tommy Hilfiger and adolescent B.O. Obviously this stuff is higher quality and lasts a lot longer as it should. The first few mins I get some sort of minty vibe that I’m not too crazy about, but it only lasts a few mins. Then the Tommy kicks in. After that it stays fairly linear throughout. I see some say it’s been discontinued but it appears to still be on the official Montale website. If you were a Tommy boy back in the day you need this in your life.

Do you miss the old feeling you got when you smelled your old bottle of Tommy in the 90s and you just don’t get that same feeling anymore with your new bottle? Well this is it. This has that old magic. This will stimulate those old memories and take you back to the late 90s when life was so much sweeter and carefree. This actually has that all American apple pie accord that the original formulation of Tommy had. To top it all off it lasts all day and projects for hours. If you loved Tommy in the 90s just buy this right now. This is the perfect 24/7 365 signature scent. Excellent 10/10

Upon the initial Spray I was instantly taken back to the late 90's/early 2000's when my older brother wore Tommy as his signature scent. Back when it was much fuller and stronger of a scent. What a pleasant surprise! This is quite literally niche Tommy. It has good performance as is, but I'm a performance junkie so I layer it over Molecule 02! What a great combination it is, and I highly recommend this to anyone who loves Tommy.

My general opinion is that Montale is a marketing house pushing their own fragrance line with a fairytale about a Monsieur Montale who never exsisted. BUT.They from time to time actually DO release some really good stuff. Intense Pepper and Fougeres Marine are good examples. FM is bright, optimistic, uplifting and fairly natural smelling. Reminds me of the original Tommy Hilfiger. I love this juice.

This is by far my favorite from Montale. I dont know if this was purposely done or sheer luck but this is a spot on reincarnation of the preformulated Calvin Klein Escape from the 90s. A scent that was my signature all through high school. Glad I can wear this now and not feel like I'm stuck in the 90s..not that it was a bad thing 😂😂

This is a 90’s throwback fragrance, and in the best way possible. This is a better quality, 1:1, version of Tommy Hilfiger. I recognized this scent as soon as I sprayed it. I had to go back and smell the OG, to find that although this is a clone, it is better in every way. Very impressed with this, and I will always sing its praises.

Just picked this up. Concensus is that this smells a lot like Tommy by hilfiger and I have to agree. Basically the same thing but louder and a couple of the floral notes have been amped up. Lovely fragrance. Was able to get a bottle for sixty bucks. If you’re strapped for cash get Tommy because it’s very similar. Great summer scent.

Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy Intense? An amped up ,Tommy, plus noticeable Oakmoss and 'green' accords. The 'Marine' accord isn't salty or seaweed like. It has similarities to, Calvin Klein, Escape with the 'green' accords and sour, fruit mash accord. If you love Tommy, but, wish it were heavier and lasted all day, get this!

This is Tommy on steroids. I'd say it smells 95% similar. However, the sillage and longevity are ridiculous (in the best way). I sprayed one spritz and my entire apt smells like it, nor can I get the smell out of my nose. It's a beast. Great price for a niche but designer type scent.

I couldn’t wait to get this after Ross from tltg said it smelled like tommy. I always loved tommy and was my go to in the late 90!s. At first spray the biggest smile came to my face because there it was in a more potent way. So happy I found this and might have to stock up

A fresh breeze. Im 1 of the few that actually likes it.this was my first montale purchase in 2007. Always got compliments.has like a mineral, seaweed and light lavender vibe..

Smells like mint and the Ocean. Last for ages and projects very loud. I only need 2 sprays wearing this. It's a 😍. Cheers

I recieved a sample of this and tried it out all today. I immediately recognized the opening as a 90’s scent but couldn’t quite place it. In the heart it gets a little minty, I assume it’s the patchouli. Kinda smells like Creed’s Viking with a hint of clove. It doesn’t project far at all. Kinda stays close to the skin. Nice though. Then I sprayed it again on my hand after work and it hit me. Tommy by Tommy Hilfiger. Dead on. If you sample this and like it, I would recommend saving your money and buying a $20 bottle of Tommy and layering it with Dua Scarlet Warrior (inspired by Creed’s Viking) for $45-$60 deepening on discount code going. I already own Tommy.l for nostalgic purposes, so I won’t be buying a bottle of this. It’s nice though and I recieved a compliment in the first hour. This is around $80-$120 per bottle so try before you buy. 6.5/10 for me.

Salty clean aquatic with lavender and its the best office scent I think I've smelled next to Versace pour homme. Its great and classy and very mass appealing for men. I think I would want to layer this with montblanc explorer. I'm sure it would be a winner. However, It smells like something that an affordable designer could produce for cheaper...but you can't magically make a designer make this cheaper just for you so you are left with a choice....pay for it or find something cheaper that kinda smells similar but its not exactly the same. For me I will just buy it as a decant and then try layering because this is so classy. Heck even maybe layer with Versace pour home. Don't layer this with a fragrance that's stronger than itself because it will simple fade into the background. This is good but its no monster. 7.9/10 - daily masculine office

FOUGÈRES MARINE by MONTALE 🌊🪵🧂 My first from this FRENCH House. Even though this has Marine notes, it doesn’t run in the “BLUE”, ALGAES or CALONE wagon but tiny SALTY. What I get is a high AROMATIC GREENISH nuance: like a FRESH MINTY accord, in fact come to my mind an “ICY SPEARMINT” vibe. The dry out is kind of “WOODY”, like the smell that comes from the woods of the piers. I cannot deny the Nostalgic feeling since it reminds me my beloved signature fragrance during my college days: TOMMY by TH (Freshly ironed sheets vibe included). Pleasant, zero blind buy risk, low dislike rate and excellent longevity. Dressing: informal, white shirt. Place: beach, office, gym or just visit mom. Cons: high price. The bottle is so beautiful but feels too lightweight. Rate: 🥇

Definitely on the upper end of the 3-6 hour longevity. I'm not the biggest lavender fan but I wanted to give this one a try. Overall it was well done, and the opening felt almost metallic. After a half hour or so the lavender shone through and kind of dominated the scent onward (or I was just more sensitive to it). Might be a gem if aquatic lavender is your jam, I am sick of the aquatic scents that last an hour, so the longevity makes it worth a try itself. Scent 6/10 Longevity 5.5-6.5 hours Stillage (scents are quite on me) 5/10 Overall 5/10 But I knew it was a longshot going in.

Coming of age in the 90's, I have fond memories of aquatics, original nautica and coolwater being standouts to My young nose; I purchased this as an upgrade to those based on the reviews that I read online.Although that certainly is the case, where those colognes where fresh, crisp and breezy, this one is more moist than fresh ,also somewhat sweet.It is also natural and earthy.Definitely worth a try if you are looking for a quality natural aquatic that agrees with your skin, a bit too sweet on My skin , but hope I get better results in the heat this summer.

Great fresh fragrance - this does not have the same nuclear performance profile that montale is known for but it still works. This is a much, much safer blind buy in my opinion because it's fresh, masculine, mass appealing and non- offensive. Great for daily wear or more perhaps. I didn't believe others when I read it's a safe blind buy but to me now after smelling it at ZGO San Francisco...I say there were actually right for once....

If you like the original Tommy you will like this. I use to own tommy in the 90's and recognized the scent profile right away, at least in the opening and mid. In the dry down, it goes away from the known profile into a nice patchouli with an almost light leather facet. It's a twist on that profile (like a flanker) and it's actually pretty nice. If I can get it for a reasonable price I might pick this up.

Salty,aromatic sea water with greenery (vetiver/patchouli) in the background and slight hints of lavendar. Very safe and inoffensive for every occasion in the 65 degrees + weather months. To my nose, it smells similar to Acqua Di Gio and Pacific Rock Moss. I would not say this is unique enough to pay the retail price tag of $180. I paid $55 on Ebay, what a steal. :]

As I encounter more and more aquatic colognes I get a sense of which notes make it feel aquatic on my skin. I get a glimpse of oceanic greenery here and not overwhelming sea notes. It takes multiple sniffs to understand how the rest of the notes cumulatively make this aquatic. This is more of a Pacific Rock Moss aquatic than Sel Marin or Seafaring Man.

It's a very nice composition. A very solidly composed classical cologne, but with a sea in mind. The smell is reminiscent of sea or rather of seaside, but it doesn't smell like a toilet freshener. I find this smell calm and confident. The composition is typical of male colognes, but it's suitable for women too, it's not that sharp or barbershop-y.

Fougeres Marines by Montale is the definition of an aromatic marine fragrance. It honestly smells like you’re walking through a cottage garden on the foreshore, without any decomposing seaweed, which usually plays a role in foreshores in my experience. Very pleasant, green and floral, but with a dominant marine note.

It’s good. Smells like candied geranium in a fresh pool. Definitely an acquired taste. You’re gonna hate or love it, probably the former. Much better than that crap, ‘Santal Wood’ *cringe* This one has old school cologne vibes. Something like a good aftershave, but a little more dynamic. Obviously masculine.

Interesting frag, kind of a mix of a synthetic fruity accord, saltiness, a vegetal green, a minty green and some citrus. Not too bad a scent but a little cloying as its quite strong and obviously synthetic. If you enjoy this I would probably recommend CdG Amazingreen as something with a little more quality.

This is nice. I'd put this Montale in the same ballpark as CK Escape. I can see myself wearing this on hot, sunny days when I'm not in the mood for the heavier stuff I prefer.

I like it. If my memory serves me correctly then this reminds me a bit of Tommy. Masculine scent for sure.

NOT BLIND BUY SAFE- Sharp opening with salty lavender. On my skin, opening is not pleasant to my nose. Too salty and after about 20-30 mins the lavender mixed with the salt note starts appearing. Projection is about 1 feet for may be 45 mins max. Then last as a close bubble which you can smell for 2 hour. Longevity is about 6 hours in total and sits close to skin after about an hour. The scent profile is not for everyone. Consider a sample first.

It could be a go-to mens cologne, even if I find that even ladies can pull this off, like going to the gym or lazy Sunday walk. It is not marine, as feeling salty notes, but still marine in the sense of having "blue bottles" scents. Great longevity as with all Montales and you get a lot of scent for your money (especially if you get yours at discounters). I pick up lavender, moss and geranium. A nice reminder of my 90s high school time :)

Blind bought it because I wanted to see what Montale can do with aquatic notes and overall I'm dissapointed. Too generic and cheap smelling. Definitely for older men. If you're under 35 do not buy this. 3/5 on a good day

This is okay. To me smells like any generic shower gel/male shampoo that'd you find at a discount store like TJ Maxx. Specifically, any "blue gel" - you know what blue smells like, and this smells like a blue gel.

For me, this smells like sea salt, seaweed, lavender and musk. I have a 2 ml tester, which says "unisex", but this is too masculine for my taste. I'm not going to get a full bottle.

Sharp lavender, slightly dirty musk, a minty marine note with some salt and cool geranium make for an odd yet interesting opening. Green moss and hints of patchoulli join in on the slightly cleaner and pleasant dry down. Another boring yet agreeable acquatic from Montale. Overall a fairly clean, sharp and green acquatic. Projection and sillage are modest, longevity is moderate. Score 4/10

Sorry Montale! Let down, a nice aquatic scent (1 of 10000 out there), the EDP is a joke, I can only validate that if its from John Varvatos..... Certainly, summer scent, day time. And my recommendation is SKIP THIS confidently. You are not missing out. - Scent - 5/10 - Sillage - 5/10 (1 hr of 2 ft) - Longevity - 4/10 (5 hrs skin scent, its all gone then).

an average, but solid aqua fragrance. Like most Montale fragrances the top note smells of lavender with a sharp egde to the initial smell. For me I did not enjoy the top notes or middle notes. The dry down is more likeable with a soft aquatic feeling to it. I give it 6/10 for an aquatic scent. A little to sharp for me to spend the money to buy it.

First, let me say i love the house of Montale and the high quality of their fragrances. However, this was a disappointment. Horrible longevity. Very soft projection. Scent is nice, but nothing special. Just smells like a mens body wash like Zest or something.

It’s a meh for me and not what l expected. In the dry down it’s straight patchouli.

The reviews are right, this smells like the original Tommy. However, the performance on this is absolutely nuclear like most montale fragrances. I applied this at 8:30 AM and after two showers (both with amouage body wash) I could still smell it at 8:30 PM. This is one of the few fragrances that I would say is actually too strong for me to wear. In terms of the scent profile, the opening is very nice, and very reminiscent of 90s designers. The dry down becomes very generic/perfume-ish, and very harsh/synthetic. If you wear this, you are signing up for a solid 24 hours.

Wow! Everyone saying that this smelled like a better stronger version of classic Tommy for men in the 90's is spot on! This gives me so much nostalgia and I think if you liked popular men's EDT version fragrances of the 90's but just wish they performed better then look no further and get this! This made me so happy smelling this that I feel giddy like a high schooler again =)

Don’t listen to the people telling you this is Tommy from the 90s. It’s not. It’s a carbon copy of Hugo Boss from 2007. This is a perfectly safe blind buy IF AND ONLY IF you like Hugo Boss AND Tommy Hilfiger and NOT if Hugo Boss reminds you of a lying ex boyfriend. Don’t go seeking the 90s in this one it ain’t here!

Smells almost IDENTICAL to Tommy from Tommy Hilfiger... and costs twice as much. Bottle seems like it came out of a Coca-Cola factory... cheapest bottle EVER. Just buy Tommy... I am embarrassed for Montale. Are the rest of their fragrances like this? How are they still in business? LOL

the top note is a masterful blend of lavender and green/herbal, kind of like mint, which makes it masculine.the drydown is even better; i'm imagining a walk through a shaded forest in the morning, leading to the beach.very fresh.subtle, yet sophisticated and sweet.
