Oud Edition

Bought this, blind, because Fragrantica had led me to believe that I might like a Montale or Mancera oud, plus this one was going for a reasonable price on Notino. Anyway I wanted an oud, such as this, that was fairly uncomplicated (with or without the rose note), solid and perhaps even generic, so that it could stand on its own two feet but might also be good for layering. I haven't worn this enough to have a nuanced view of it, but I really like it. To me the rose here is much stronger than the voting suggests. It really hits the sweet spot for balancing the oud and co. I'm sure the incense accord in particular, probably with the sandalwood, plays a big part in the fact that I don't primarily experience the oud as the grainily medicinal kind that I find to be the most common in Western oud fragrances. For me the overall effect here, with the oud at centre stage, is creamier than those Western scents and also has a light powdery aspect. The oud, to my nose, is definitely indolic a lot of the time, and as smooth as a baby's dirty bum. Wearing this in moderation only, misted onto my clothes, I love it. My capacity to describe the individual notes and accords is limited because I have sometimes layered this. I was expecting it to be dark enough to serve as a workhorse for darkening fragrances that were lacking in the base, but the rose here is initially so prominent for me that I doubt that this will see much darkening duty. Still, I've had some fun wearing this under a fairly uncomplicated rose-forward Western fragrance. That way, I've been able to add some compatible side notes, and get rose effects ranging from the candied, Turkish delight type to a stunning scrunched-up petal powder. This is in spite of the fact that, on its own, the rose in that other fragrance that I've layered this with smells very much like a living, almost breathing, deep red rose in an English country garden. Here's the thing though. Oud Edition is a solid, robust fragrance. In terms of wine, you might say that this were on a par with a quality high-altitude Argentinian Malbec. Now, please understand that I am not suggesting that this actually smells like Malbec or any other wine, even though the wearer may well get the occasional waft of something not that far removed from that. What I mean is that, even with a couple of years of ageing under its belt, Malbec probably isn't the most complicated or appealing wine, or even red wine, on the planet, nor is it the most robust, nor, definitely, the most expensive. If you come to this fragrance weary from smelling countless quality ouds from the Muslim world and so on--if you're looking for the oud equivalent of an immaculately aged big-shot 1945 Château Mouton-Rothschild Bordeaux to wake you from your slumber--then Oud Edition may not do much for you. That's probably not what it's aiming for, though. Malbec can be a credible tipple and delicious in its own right and its own context (ideally, served with a slab of deliciously grilled, dead Argentinian cow 🇦🇷 🐮), so why the hell would you want to blend it with another wine? That other wine would sure as hell need some body of its own, just to avoid being swamped by the Malbec. Why bother? Why adulterate a perfectly good red? Pour yourself a glass and enjoy the damn Malbec. Oud Edition? It may not knock your socks off if you're well versed in oud, and maybe it doesn't deserve a whole lot of prizes for originality etc., but it is a great, substantial, tasteful oud, that can be relished, in moderation, on its own, whenever the opportunity to wear this kind of stuff (in the cooler months) without pissing off everyone around you comes up.

Montale Oud Edition is a 2021 release that’s a very pleasant take on oud/rose/leather concept that Montale and Mancera have produced—arguably, to excess—in a very large catalogue that includes many scents that arguably fit this profile. It immediately strikes me as a smoother, more rounded out take on a couple of recent favorites of mine, both 2019 offerings, Mancera Precious Oud and Montale Oud Dream. Oud Edition is a bit safer than both, frankly, without the booze of Precious Oud or some of the sharper edge of Oud Dream, and it’s not over-the-top rosy, so it’s a really nice introductory option for this type of fragrance. It’s also less sharp and heady than Montale Red Aoud, Black Aoud, or White Aoud. Overall, I think this fragrance is great, but it’s simply a bit redundant with other options I love, but I’d encourage others to check it out if it seems interesting. It performs well, has a great balance of notes without any individual accord taking over, and is a great example of what this brand does so well—smooth ouds with rose and sometimes leather (as in this case), saffron, other resins, etc. I obtained my sample from Olfactif (at the standard $170 for 100ml pricing), an official retailer, and there are other official retailers/boutiques in the US like Krystal Fragrance, and it’s sold on the secondary market as well via FragranceNet. 8 out of 10

#1544 in my "Tour de Fragrance" The only brand I have tried out more of than Montale is Mancera. There are some Montale scents that have disappointed me, but not many. I've tried 32, and I gave passing grades to all but 4. Some are really great, but mostly they're just nice, good quality scents at a reasonable price. If Montale does anything it's oud, and I like most of them. The majority do the traditional Mideastern oud and rose thing, though the oud is a Westernized oud. I prefer the leather scents. If you can do without the rose, and I can, you have several to choose from, and I prefer the most masculine one that comes off like a saddle shop, "Aoud Cuir d'Arabie." But "Oud Edition" is a really nice, good quality scent, and the rose not only isn't dominant, it isn't that persistent. So if like me you just want the leather and agarwood and are good with an almost imperceptible floral, give it fifteen minutes of so of dry down and you'll be happy with this. It's a good quality scent for any environment, fairly priced, unisex, masculine leaning, attractive, a compliment getter, and not likely to offend as long as you go easy. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

For a long time I was looking for precious oud. Unfortunately all ouds are oud-rose or oud-vanilla combos where the second note is more prominent than the oud itself. Oud-rose combo is giving me old granny perfume from 1987 and I can't stand them. But I finally found the perfect oud combination I was looking for. Very strong precious oud /not skanky or fecal oud/, soft and sweet leather (it's not rubbery type), the incense is amazing, sandalwood wich creamy vanilla touch around it, and bulgarian rose-musk combo which lingers around the eges. Bulgarian rose is amazing, as I use to say-bulgarian rose is always that "secret spice" to make a perfume masterpiece. It's a bit sweet, floral and jammy rose. Don't get me wrong-it's not rose scent. First couple of minutes the bulgarian rose is very prominent but after a while it goes way backwards and sparkles from time to time around the edges. Longevity: 12+ Projection: 3-4 strong then goes moderate.

Top 3 of all Montale male perfumes, in my opinion. This is what high society clubs smell like. Everything about it says "high class" and "noble", expensive whiskey in a crystal glass, freshly unpacked expensive leather, oak and conifer furniture that still has this fresh noble timber smell, rare niche perfumes of the guests flow in the air... The incense/smoke note here is very elegant, it`s not churchy, or meaty or a "forest fire" smell (as in most frequent variation of smoky perfumes). This is a distant smoked wooden barrel smell. (With all these alcohol mentioning there is no booze smell, just the elegant side of the complex drinks and the whisky bar timber note). Good bit of oud, a shadow of a medicinal rose... Everything is present and vivid, (it`s still Montale) but nothing is overpowering. This is a beautifully layered posh male scent :)

Slightly smoky and sweet incense right off the bat, followed up by lightly burnt oud, and an accord similar to a significantly tamed and much more wearable Rose & Cuir from Frederic Malle. I really love this. It's exceptionally well blended and not "synthetic" (a technically meaningless adjective, but I use it here because most will understand the connotations - especially when it comes to Montale) like some others from the brand. Smoky, leather-forward oud/rose fragrances can often border on entirely unwearable but this one somehow manages to be overflowing with character, extremely addictive and I imagine would be generally pleasant even to less experienced noses, due to the smooth sweetness in the incense accord. Will be getting a bottle of this immediately and super glad I got this one in my sample set.

Probably the best pure oriental fragrance periodsmooth bewitching mysterious and seductive.The rose is sweet but not syrupy jammy but not too jammy also not too dry.Sandalwood is smooth creamy and buttery the incense is smokey and the leather is a beautiful delicate suede.This is currently available at Notino for under £50 on sale its ridiculous.This is worth an extra digit at the end I'm considering buying it and selling up my Encens by Issey Miyake for a profit that's a brilliant fragrance niche level but the refinement her is on beyond anything more extortionate brands like Roja,Initio,Xerjoff have created.Quality to price ratio is insane let the fools keep hating on Montale.Score 10/10 can be used in all weather aside from moderate to high heat

This may be the best Montale, actually, it may as well be one of the best niche fragrances out there. This such a sophisticated, refined, and likeable oud blended with lovely soft leather, very soft rose and a beautiful hint of sweetness, incense, and sandalwood. I am sure the notes breakdown is way too simplistic, as to accomplish this many other elements have to come to play. I can detect a little benzoin, a little vanilla, saffron, and some labdanum, all boosting a creamy dusty sandalwood-musk-sweet incense accord in the base. Somehow all of this stays airy and transparent and not heavy despite being definite winter/fall dedicated fragrance. I love it. I can almost detect some tobacco too.

Love, love, LOVE this fragrance! Starts out with a punch of smoky incense right away, then the leather, oud, and bit of rose come in not long after. I wish I could find more opportunities to wear this masterpiece. I work in the service industry, and i really dont feel like this is a safe fragrance to wear around people that are trying to enjoy a meal. Not that it smells bad, hut just intense. It could be a unisex frag, but leans a tad more masculine. Great blend, last forever. In fact, i can still smell it on a hoodie that i was wearing when i last wore it a few weeks ago. Montale has neat bottles, and they are super light.

My personal favorite from Montale. Was a blind buy for me. If you're looking for a fragrance with oud front and center, with rose and incense, this is the one. Very elegant, classy, and dark. This one is beast mode on me. If I spray it on at around 3pm, I can go to the gym the next morning and I'll start smelling it again A lot of Montale fragrances will have oud in the name, and either not have it, or not have enough to be very noticeable. It's a powerful, but smooth oud. Not funky or animalic. Definitely competes with niche oud fragrances in a higher price range, especially from discounters. Overall: 9/10

Are you oud-curious? Finishing my decant today and I’m taken by how surprisingly easy this is to wear. I feel this was specifically made to introduce folks to wearing Oud/rose style fragrances. It’s stays on the safer side of this style without hiding what it is. I appreciate how the incense and leather balances out the rose which in turn balances out the (synthetic) Oud. If you’re looking for a relatively safe entry into a classic Oud forward style this would be a decent place to start, and although that could also be said about other Montale/Mancera fragrances, it’s especially true here.

The reviewer below must have a broke nose.Yes the rose and sandalwood make this creamy and sweet.However they're is a burning oud Incense bakhoor vibe with leather right there with it preventing this from becoming just another sweet oud rose like MFK OSM or Rojas Amber Aoud.As great as they are both have the typical scent us westerners associate with this genre.This is markedly truly masculine middle eastern perfumery one word for this;masterpiece!

I've been wearing this frag for the last 3 days now, is growing more and more on me I absolutely love it, was a blind buy and i am so happy I had the b.lls to buy it because i don't like oud much but the oud on this is amazing. I don't get rose at all, leather and oud but soft and pleasant not stinky 10 out of 10 frag the price was amazing too 48£/100ml

If you're in need of mystical depth in perfumes with a gentle touch of well-balanced luxury you won't be disappointed. It reminds me of the moment when you sit in a dark room with roses in a vase, smoke in the air, and a slightly open window and speak your mind succinctly to someone you trust deeply. Smells like silent power, a ritual at night.

Oud can be a fantastic, deep, sensual note when used correctly. Sadly, since it was introduced to the masses in the western world, we’ve been bombarded with a mix bag of oud creations. Montale Oud Edition is a fabulous fragrance. Smooth, velvety, sophisticated, masculine and elegant. Definitely one of the handful oud perfumes worth to try.

A very smooth, and well-rounded, oriental Rose/Oud combo. Woody, spicy, a bit sweet, with a slightly jammy rose, but nothing over the top. It has excellent perfomance and it can be worn at the office if you're careful with the number of sprays. Very appealing.

This is burnt oud HEAVEN. Very dark, very....extreme at first, but then the drydown is just embers of the prima faci oud de Dubai. Magnificent. Not for everyone for sure, but if you're a fraghead, you'll absolutely love this.

beatiful but stong, easy to wear oud. reminds me of Versace Oud Noir, wich i love. still, a "designer nose" should sample it first. good projection for 2-3 hours, lasts 10+ hours.

This is a hidden gem. I never spray more than three times. That’s the secret. It becomes attractive and sensual. The oud is a westernized oud, less medicinal.

This is like a well done Montale oud/rose fragrance have had a baby with Initio Side Effect. Envision those two together, and this is what you get exactly.

This is very similar to aoud cuir d'arabie which is good because I love it. Both have that stinky kind of oud. 9/10. This is another beast mode montale.

I am surprised at the high review scores since this has a lot of oud in it. It smells good to me but I could see how this wouldn't be well liked.

After having this awhile the opening is off putting to me. Dry down is excellent though. Both sillage and longevity are beast mode. 8.5/10.

Yup that's bakhoor/oud incense alright, with a dry down to die for

Oud, leather and subtle rose. The opening has a smooth western oud accord. Very strong sillage and scent bubble. As it dries down, the leather really becomes prominent. Its a smooth leather with the incense giving it an edge to it. The oud and rose are subdued to let the leather do most of the heavy lifting. Imbig into authentic oud attar from Southeast asia and middle east, so the oud being as subtle as it is and not prominent was a bit of a let down. The leather reminds me so much of what you smell in Mancera Jasmin Exclusif (the leather note itself) but it much more refined and less rugged and sharp. There is a creaminess to the overall scent due to the sandalwood. It really softens out the entire scent in a really sophisticated and elegant manner. It really takes the leather in a wonderful direction. Its not loud, but it states itself in away that will turn heads. It leans very masculine and definitely special occassion worthy. Most definitely a cold weather gem. While not an overly complex scent, it does what it does, and does it well. You really have to love a leather only kind of perfume to appreciate this one. Its not new purse/black leather, its not rugged rough suede or cowboy leather. It sits in between. Enjoyable for me but I like my leather more complex and less central more accompanied with florals (Jasmin Exclusif, Ombre Leather).

I'm going to say something controversial... Everyone on here seems to suggest that this is a relatively easy going entry oud and largely an inoffensive straightforward masculine leaning concoction.. but I do find that, although somewhat true, there is something a little bit challenging (to wear) about this one. Btw, I like really skanky ouds and I love other things like Montale Cuir D'Arabie .. but it's the inclusion of incense and a slight sweetness that sits in alongside the toffee-like-oud and Montale leather accord that tugs at the synapses enough to occasionally induce a headache. That incense can cause a little fatigue when wearing. But overall I do agreed it's really good scent and great vfm.

Pretty good rendition of the dna montale has done again and again but they reduced the rose and increased the spices here so it comes off more of an oudy spiced amber than and oud rose mainstay. It's not quite the same but I see why people voted similar to Ombre Nomade, it's in the same ballpark. Got this in 20ml form as a freebie from a discounter promo, otherwise I would not have bothered to even try it but I'm glad I have it it's quite good.

This is a great fragrance. It’s very well blended the notes give way to a beautiful aroma, which I mainly get Oud, leather, rose and incense. An extremely safe Oud fragrance as well for anyone wanting to try their nose on Oud. Plus I got it for an amazing price which is even better, this may end up being my signature dark spicy rose scent from now on. It’s perfect for dates and night outs as well. God bless fragcom!

Got a sample of this. It's a very accessible rose/oud. I usually find the rose/oud combo a bit hard to digest and easily off-putting, but this one works somehow. Nothing animalic or funky about it. Very easy to like. The rose, to me, is way more noticeable than the main accords on this page are indicating. This would be a great place to start for someone who is interested in rose/oud fragrances.

I quite like it. Rose/oud/leather in the most easy to digest way. Similar to Oudrising. I give it a LIKE only because it's behind the trend by quite a lot. Others have this DNA plenty. If it came out 4-5 years ago It would've been an uncontested love.

Smoky, leathery oud that's still pretty wearable and easy to like

This is the first "Oud" fragrance I've sniffed before. I've constantly heard of this "note" but never have smelled it. I chose this fragrance in particular because of the description of other users. Descriptions like "creamy" interested me (sandalwood). Also I was able to get a sample without having to blind buy a bottle. THANK GOD I did not blind buy it first. I have a big culinary background so I can relate a lot of smells to those smelled in a kitchen. Top notes. When first sprayed the most prominent note is leather. This is very leather forward. Then I get this sort of Petrol/Gasoline sort of animalic note. I guess this is my introduction to Oud, because my first impression was: "What note here is the Oud?". I thought it would have a sort of woody smell to it. Then on the 2nd sniff: "Oh, the Oud is the weird Petrol/Gasoline animalic note". Then I definitely smell a powdery/sweetness playing off the prior notes, this is most certainly the rose. But with each sniff it's "Petrol/Gasoline trying to be tamed by rose". The rose is quite powdery. It smells quite feminine to me. Then the oud reminds you that this pretty lady wearing rose has actually been doing oil changes all day at her day job as a car mechanic. LOL. That's the best description anyone is going to give you describing Oud and rose. LOL. The dry down gets a LOT better to my nose. It becomes incense and rose. The oud blends with the incense so much that it becomes tamed. No longer is there a prominent "Petrol" smell. It blends in with the incense and leather. The rose isn't as feminine anymore. It seems like the sandalwood starts to compliment the rose, where in the top notes the rose dominates the sandalwood. Going to Catholic church growing up I can recognize the smell of incense, as it is often used during mass. The dry down reminds me of church. It's incense/powder/creaminess/woodsy. The dry down is unisex in smell while the top notes are more feminine due to the prominent rose. I was trying to imagine where I'd possibly wear this fragrance. The only thing I could think of was going to church once the dry down was ongoing. Don't force others to smell those top notes! LOL In terms of food, the dry down kept on reminding me of something. I kept on thinking of a "peanut butter, jelly, and fluffernutter sandwich". You know when you toast your bread and it's slightly burnt. The peanut butter with strawberry preserves as the jelly (the sweetness kept on reminding me of strawberry preserves) along with the Fluffernutter balances out the burned smell of the toast. The fluffernutter has that distinct marshmellow sweetness. Those are the components of this fragrance to me. I now know what Oud smells like and I know it's not for me. But I had to try it once to get that note into my "smell knowledge base". I certainly won't forget the smell of Oud, it is certainly unique. Just not something I'd enjoy. In terms of this fragrance, I'd say the drydown is much better than the top notes. You wouldn't want to smell like the top notes all day. If you do, go become a car mechanic. You can smell like "oud" ALL DAY! :-) No wonder this is a big fragrance note in the middle east. They love their gasoline!

I've smelled it before. I'll tell you more, I've smelled it before, more than once, and from Montale/Mancera. It's sort of a copy-paste yet again. This isn't overly complex - oud, leather, rose, musk, smoke, some woods. Smells like smoky wood, dark, not very animal leather, some creamy wood and musk, rosey-floral making a plum accord. Plum, leather jacket, a bit of rose. All that in that typical artificial/Montale character. Not very complex, definitely performing. unisex, more of a nighttime, any season but summer. Suits leather jacket, not office safe.

Pleasant, balanced, slightly aromatic wood, but not as distinctive as in some of Montale’s Oud performances. The image is softer, more suede kind leathery, with nice, just little bitter spices. The rose here is sweet and fruity. Raspberry was the first thing that came to my mind. Very jammy, balances the wood / leather elements nicely. For me this mayby turns a little more feminine, but is completely unisex. A beautiful scent, little too "conventional" for myself, but definitely interesting for someone who isn't so deep in Oud /spicy leather scents.

Received 3 compliments today, never had that happen before (not the reason I wear fragramce, but still nice to hear). I've let this sit for awhile...this now jumps off my skin. Smokey, oudy, leather bomb, with a nice 🌹 to round it out. This is definitely an Autumnal scent, which may be why I wasn't feeling it before. This is going to get a lot of wear this season. The sillage is a warm smoky blanket. Big fan! EDIT: This has now moved into my top 5 (from Montale). Smokey, oudy goodness. 9.5/10

Sickly sweet caramelized rose. Feminine. No animalic virile notes. Oud??? Pffffff.... A hard pass for me.

I bought this perfume blind, as well as Lorenzo Villoresi's Patchouli and Perris Montecarlo's Patchouli Nosy Be. Actually, these perfumes shouldn't give the impression that they're patchouli. Patchouli is their dominant note, but it's surrounded by other notes. The word "patchouli" in the perfume's name is very misleading. They're like perfumes that have patchouli as their dominant note, for example, Jovoy Psychedelique. A total disappointment. If you want a really pure patchouli, without any other notes, go for Farmacia SS. Annunziata Patchouly Indonesiano. I also bought it blind, but this is a true patchouli that throws out bursts that are sometimes woody, sometimes earthy, also including the scent of very dry earth recently wet by rain. The juice in Farmacia SS Annunziata's patchouli is so thick that the sprayer gets sticky. A gem. It is also great for layering. Here in Fragrantica it is clear: the only note that FSSA declares is patchouli and nothing else.

oud edition from Montale (2021, parfumo) is a refined perfume wherein the oud and rose play somewhat more submissive roles but are nevertheless indistinguishable. for some reason with 'Leather' I always have an 'Ah ... yes' response. in that I seem to not come up with it so easily and afterwards it is quite obvious. I would say the Leather I smell here is almost a 'Framboise inside of a Chanel -Hermès -LouisVuitton -Versace Hand Bag type of Leather' mostly achieved with Iris and Violet (Memo's French Leather, Chanel's Misia, Hermès's Barynia) and here with a stealthy Rose (for Montale that is). but I always pick up on Rose, no matter how minute her presence is (Rosehip) and it shall never be minute. the perfume notwithstanding develops rather quickly in a more substantial Leather perfume with all the elegance this can be mustered. that is why Arabians Rose appear in the comparisons. but you can also discern a fermly woody Oud, for instance Oud Assam. the other important ingredient is Incense which 'pulverizes' all the notes in a satin cloud of Powderiness with help from the Rose. Sandelwood of course does also support a soft and woody granulary effect, which make this perfume highly elegant and sophisticated. Montale had always also have such type of perfumes, next to the ones I so love, the screeching Rose-Ouds. but Nepal Oud, Oud Pashmina, Oud Damascus, Oudmazing were always amongst the scathing screechers and I ALL love them.

One of the better creations by Montale, whats going for it is the lack of heavy rose as in most Montale ouds, I don't like rose at all but in this one is very dim, muted, and very well blended with the oud and leather, it's a secondary note, in the back ground only, you gotta look for it. Oud edition opens up with that accord, leather, oud sandalwood and rose, respectively. Slowly the incense start to become more present, at this stage you realize it was there from the very beginning but was operating from the back ground. I wish there was no rose in it, I believe it could've been way better, don't get me wrong it's not a bad scent, and it's not rose forward, but I don't think it's needed, or maybe I just hate rose. Starts abit cold, gets warmer thru the wearing. At the end you will be left with a soft leather, sandwood and incense. The dry down is more pleasant to me than the opening. The incense used is not "frankincense", it's warm resins nonetheless, that I can't identify. Quite pleasant perfume. Good entry to those unfamiliar with eastern perfumery.

Wearing my sample today. It's pretty nice. I get oud, resinous incense, a touch of leather and juuuuust a touch of rose. The rose is very subdued but it's keeping this from smelling too woody, it's there for balance. It's an oud I could see wearing to a classy event-- doesn't scream like Black Aoud does, and this seems in keeping with what others have mentioned-- that this is a good intro oud. It's not animalic or barnyard like some of my favorites but it has a refined quality that serves a different purpose. Overall quite pleasant.

I am very fancy about Montale house, my absolute favourite is still oud dream, whoever I definitely think this one will be the second favourite. This is a masterpiece with respectful presence on the skin. You can be never disappointed with Pierre Montale
