Santal Wood

As a lover of 212 Men (I found it in 2020), this DOES smell very similar, maybe 75-80%, but it is not exactly like it, especially as it continues to dry down. This is something I think you could possibly have in your collection alongside 212. This wasn't a powerhouse for me, but it does still project within a couple of feet on clothes the few days after. It won't fill a room, but people close by should smell you. I wish it was a bit stronger, so 4 stars for not having nuclear projection. I would be faithful to them for life if they made a nuclear version of this, because I can't find 212 or anything similar that is nuclear. Per Montale, the notes are: Nutmeg, Madagascar Black Pepper, Cardamom, Indian Sandalwood, Moroccan Cedarwood

I love the way Santal Wood wears on me, lasting 12 hours plus and transitioning beautifully. All the violet leaf, pepper and juniper bring to mind Dior’s Fahrenheit, but there there are also sparkly spices and ofcourse a lovely sandalwood note in a glorious synthetic form that turns up the volume of the natural stuff to 10 and sharpens all its edges (No powdery wood here). There’s also a lovely barbershop finish, I woke up one morning having worn this to bed and upon waking I thought I could have been fooled that I was freshly shaven. There is a subtle clean salty ocean water feel to it in the background. You have to jive with the Montale style to enjoy this but it certainly is one of their best creations.

It was an Instant crush... until it lasted. Among 10 samples I tried from Montale (and another 10 from Mancera), this is the one I liked the most. It is a nice mix of fresh, woods, clean, creamy, gentle. It has a sporty / ocean vibe that I'm usually not really found of but it is really well done and not overwhelming. Could definitely become a signature frag, would fit almost any weather, occasion. Edit: after 3 days, I can understand why it could become a bit boring/annoying/slightly nauseating. I agree that it does smell very clean from a distance but then can become quite nauseating close. 7.5/10

Pretty damn close clone of the legendary 212 by Carolina Herrera.... Descent lasting ability and performance as to be expected by a Montale fragrance. Unfortunately though this seems to clone the new formulation of 212 nyc and not it's orginal formulation which was simply exquisite and is now greatly missed. Nice to have in the collection and in my opinion better than current formulation 212.

confused by the low rating and negative reviews. combo of freshness and a bit of marine with the wood as the backbone. I guess this mix rubbed some ppl the wrong way but it's the same reason that made it fun for me wearing this. The mix made it fun and not boring. I can see this in both the warm and cold seasons. haha, kept smelling my arms. Very enjoyable.

Sampling this as a female and although I agree this is more masculine leaning and shaving cream-esque, I just can’t get enough of sniffing myself! The spices and sea notes are heavenly. I think the opening is the most masculine part. Slowly the juniper and sandalwood begin to poke through. Nothing overly special but still lovely to wear.

Perfect signature scent and all around fragrance. Defenitely woody, aromatic, powdery, and fresh. Can easily be worn in any type of work enviroment because its so pleasant and clean smelling. It can lean a little more masculine but its a fragrance that my wife also wears. So ladies can enjoy it as well. Its actually in her top 10.

I can't believe violet leaf isn't in the ingredient list. Lovely scent with good projection. I have had several compliments with it on the first day of wearing. For the first couple of hours it smells like a hybrid between CH 212 Men and Dior Fahrenheit. Instant like for me. As usual the Montale ingredients smell of high quality.

Just tried it, different from other Montale's, a bit salty, santal is very present, more wearable by men than women but I could wear it, the sillage is tremendous!

A fresh and classy scent! Similar to Carolina Herrera 212 for sure. But to my nose, also a little bit of Vera Wang for men in there. Beautyful!!

Montale Santal Wood is a fresh, spicy, aquatic, woody fragrance that has a sporty feel. Opens with an aromatic marine accord with a noticeable fresh and salty ‘sea breeze’ quality. At the same time it’s also very spicy and peppery, You definitely get hints of cardamom and nutmeg, creating a slightly exotic vibe. The scent profile does kind of remind me of some designer freshies but this is very smooth, and has a lot of depth. In the dry down the sandal wood becomes more apparent, leaving a soft, smooth, rich and slightly sweet trail. Very pleasant, refreshing, masculine and energizing. Not the most interesting or unique scent but it’s well done and high quality. IMO Montale has more exciting offerings. So to me this smells like very strong aftershave, very masculine, but I do love the drydown by far not so much the opening. I'll be honest when I first tested it I wasn't sure what to make of Santal Wood, I am drawn to masculine scents anyway so trying this one was inevitable. But I have to say this one, stuck out like a sore thumb because I remember opening up my latest little treasure box and well Santal Wood slapped me right in the face. I do believe women can pull this one off too although it leans mostly to the male crowd. This one is like a diamond in the rough I first thought I wasn't too keen on it, but I think Santal Wood is very comforting in its own little way. And I enjoy it for that reason and weirdly while wearing it I feel strangely confident so that's a bonus. Sorry for my rambling this was just my raw thoughts on this fragrance.

Man!! Why all the hate for this one?! I actually enjoy it quite a bit. Are there other fragrances that smell similar? Absolutely. However, this is a very fitting fragrance for casual occcasions in warm weather. Great as an outdoors fragrance too. What I like about it is that it doesn’t possess the strange synthetic Montale DNA that some of their fragrances have. I was sorely disappointed by Greyland and Dark Aoud. This has got some marine freshness which isn’t as strong as some fragrances (Millesime Imperial, DG Light Blue) It also has a nice soft dry sandalwood to it which is nice. It’s very wearable. Safe for work. Safe for almost all casual occasions and I quite enjoy it, and it’s a deviation from my standard dry-woody-spicy fragrances that I so often gravitate towards. A+ for me, I put a bottle on my want list :)

Bright yet smooth, with noticeable citrus over sandalwood. I wish I had a better way to describe this -- I was overjoyed when the first waft hit my nose -- but I just don't have the words. A beautiful summer or daytime scent. Happy yet smooth and sexy. Edit: I'm shocked to see the listed notes! I'm allergic to the "ocean" scents I've tried in the past, and there's no citrus. Well, I smell what I smell. Once Santal Wood has dried down to a skin scent, it's remarkably similar to the drydown in Nina. (My favorite drydown since 2007.) It has the same faintly fruity enhanced skin warmth. It has to be applied lightly though. There's a "freshly sweaty skin" saltiness that works best in small doses.

This is one of the few Montale's that is a general crowd pleaser that smells very familiar ( I see 212 in the list but, I've never smelled it to know ) While it is woody and spicy, it's also fresh enough to be worn on nice cool, warm days. You can wear this pretty much anytime, anywhere and it will fit. If I had to suggest 1 time not to though, it would be in hot weather. I feel it can be a little too much for it. But for Spring,Fall, Winter, you're good to go. Worthy of checking out... It's a big like for me right now, still not fulling loving it enough, only because I feel like I'm going to get bored of it eventually.

I got a sample of this and immediately found it quite pleasant. Bought a full bottle. The juniper and sea note in the beginning is odd and depending on body chemistry, can be quite harsh. Once it dries down, the sandalwood comes out and it projects admirably. The oakmoss isn't very pronounced, so you'll have to settle with a linear sandalwood scent from the mid on. Like I said earlier, it's pleasant. Not the best sandalwood-based scent by any means, but you could do worse.

I bought it because of comparision to vintage Carolina Herrera 212 Men but IT'S NOTHING LIKE CH 212 god damn it ! Its more like Kenzo Pour Homme meets CH 212.... Juniper and sea notes indeed resembles the old CH212 but where the fuck are green notes which are the essence of CH212 ? THERE ARE NO GREEN NOTES... Therefore Santal Wood is very ordinary, generic sea/juniper/woody frag... 3/10

The opening is like 95% identical to Chic, just gorgeous. The dry down is very different though. But still beautiful, soft, warm and gentle. I just wish it had some Musk to make it sexy. But the accord quality is a top notch. I have had it for a few days and I already started to love it.

I'm not sure why the longevity on this is rated so low, I sprayed this on a shirt and 4 days later I can still smell it. Nice fresh warm weather fragrance. Might buy a full bottle if I find a good deal on it

I just dont see why people dont see that the juniper is the note that makes this unique. I will say it's Good but not for everyone. More for the 35 & over crowd. Unisex? sure why not. I give it a solid 8/10

Pickle zone at first blast, but quickly dries down to a watery-herbal refreshing aftershave-type scent. It reminds me a bit of Dolce and Gabbana Intenso.

Montale Santal Wood Unisex EDP opens with a moderate projection of marine, woody, and spicy accords. The opening is fresh, very woody, and pleasant. The seawater is a noticeable note, it creates a marine breeze accord, not excessively salty but enough to be noticed; the juniper is the next most prominent note, fresh, woody, piney, green, and slightly resinous. Sampling Montale Santal Wood, a 2012 release and fairly sober grouping of citruses, sandalwood, and spices (nutmeg, black pepper, cardamom) that lands quite sharp, more so than spicy, but seemingly quite pleasant for both warm and cool weather, with the house’s characteristically strong performance. Overall, I find it to be somewhere between okay and good, not one I’d reach for much even if I had it, though it’s perfectly acceptable, just a far cry from some of the better spicy/woody mixes from either the Montale or Mancera catalogues. Santal Wood is sold by the house but also is available on some boutique, department store, and discounter sites at varying prices. 6 out of 10

On me it smells more like pickled cucumbers. Something towards Santal 33 from Le Labo, but Le Labo's one deffinitely has more depth and opens up more divine than this. I would lean more masculine with this one.

Positive side: the layering is good as always and the conifer-cardamom combination is to die for Negative: Yes, the opening is very aquatic and reminds of a couple of mass-market men's perfumes.

I usually love any sandalwood fragrance...not so with this one! I do not enjoy the opening blast of juniper w/aquatic notes. I find it an odd combo while I wait for the dry down to get my beloved sandalwood. Unfortunately, I find this combo stays and battles with the sandalwood for waaay too long. IMHO, this is the worst sandalwood fragrance I have gotten my nose on. Longevity was above average...projection was within arms length. For those that really like the juniper note, this is easily unisex. Grab a sample, live with it for a few days, and get your own opinion. As for me...huge pass.

I can see how this would work for a certain type. Calling it unisex is a big stretch imo. Very male, clean cut, if you don’t love aquatics stay away. Unfortunately on me this really felt like bad date that just wouldn’t end: -Came in hopeful -Ok from far away, BIG frat energy up close -completely nauseated by the end All that being said I certainly can’t knock it for longevity, Just like someone you hope you’ll never see again it really kept on hanging around... for an eternity...

Oh man this stuff is nauseating on paper. Smells like cheap aftershave. I can say it seems natural in a rainy, musky kind of way. It’s the kind of smell you close your car windows to get away from. An acquired taste. You’re gonna love or hate it. Probably the latter.

Why is this aquatic? What is the purpose of aquatic notes in a scent named "santal wood" - Let down.

Spicy, thick sandalwood. Nothing interesting about it in itself. No for me.

Classic sandalwood with juniper, cardamom and salt/sea water. While woody and sea notes can b considered masculine, I LOVE this for a woman / unisex scent. Santal Wood smells like luxury and elegance. Super versatile for both casual and special occasions, three season friendly. Maybe not great for hot summer weather. The opening reminds me of Xerjoff’s 40 knots without the boozy notes. There is a symmetry with the wood and sea notes. SW is not fussy. The perfumer exercised restraint when putting this together. One extra note or emphasis and this perfume would not be as good as it is. Since it is a classic, streamlined scent, I could see layering this with ur fav floral or vanilla for more variations. U could also amp up the aquatic feel by layering Sandflowers. Note- this frag is great on its own. These layering options just add to the versatility. I also get a little throwback vibe. If u can see urself as a modern Ferris Bueller, drinking classic martinis, and wearing some swanky wingtips- u might click w this frag. In a complicated world it is an uncomplicated beauty.

Wow, votes and comments are all over the board for this one. I've quickly learned to NEVER, EVER blind buy Montale or Mancera fragrances, and this is a good example of why. I can see where the comparison to CH 212 comes from, but this isn't as green; it has an aquatic note plus juniper in the beginning which is actually quite pleasant! It's not overly salty or synthetic (ambroxan) like you find in most modern aquatics. As the fragrance develops, it gets creamier and adopts that "aftershave" vibe a previous viewer alluded to. I think this is spot-on. This is actually where the fragrance becomes less likable for me; it's just not as fresh as in the opening. It's still very safe and if you want a sandalwood fragrance that performs, by all means check this out, but for me it gets a little boring in the drydown. Try before you buy, especially from this house!

Wearing Santal Wood again yesterday, I feel more and more convinced it's not really similar to any CH 212 Men. I tried spraying just a bit (from that same spray vial, so just tiny squirts) and it's still relentlessly nauseating for hours.. Reading the more complete notes list below, ah yes, I got some smoky nuance somewhere.. among all that spicy peppery salty scent.. I also agree on how horribly synthetic it smells. You won't smell this one and say 'oh what a nice sandalwood'. They're obviously catering to the consumers who prioritize beast mode performance.. Also agree with the reviewer below who mentioned Kenzo Pour Homme. Go smell that current Kenzo Homme EDT or EDP (not the EDT Intense) and you'd probably see, I mean smell, my point.. I'd take 212 Men any time over this one.. After all, citrusy green powdery Santal Wood is not..

This is a big 'like' (if not 'love') for me! Fresh, aromatic. Definitely more on the masculine side, though I'd totally wear it! The spices, the woods, the sea.. I keep sniffing my wrist - I want more! 😅 I'm not sure if I can justify the price tag for a full bottle though. If I was a millionaire and wouldn't have to care about how much I spend on perfumes, then YES I'd just buy a big bottle of this - who cares about the price! But I have a feeling you can find something that smells just like this for half the price, if not less?? (This is a $100 perfume!) If I owned this bottle I'd totally wear it often. And with Montale, you always get the longevity, so the quality is there. 'Santal Wood' fits for sporty people too, btw, or if you just want to take a walk in fresh air. And a man wearing this on a date night? Mmmm!

Really nothing to add that hasn't already been said, but I'll throw my two bits in anyways... This really doesn't feel like a Montale, let alone a sandalwood fragrance. There are some nice moments which pop through, but by and large this is just way too generic, and seems better suited to a department store, or even discount fragrance outlet. The dominating "seawater" note is the same thing one would find in every scented men's deodorant found in a drugstore. This feels like a less potent version of Kenzo pour Homme, so as far as the dollar to millilitre to potency ratio goes the KpH is probably the better buy. A far more interesting option as far as an aquatic Montale goes would be Aoud Forest, or even Embruns d'Essaouira. To my nose Santal Wood actually smells like a half-developed Embruns.

Montale does a sport fragrance. They have to be kidding us. A generic opening of fresh woods enriched by the typical sporty-aquatic vibe that we're experiencing in most of the current designer's masculines of the last ten years. Pepper and juniper included...Take the worst part of Gucci Envy for Men and mix it with any sport fragrance available on the market. Things get definitely better during the drydown where Santal Wood verges towards the transparent woody-spicy territories already seen in Costume National Pour Homme and, say, Ormonde Man. The base is actually nice, not overly synthetic, radiant and well blended but, overall, the fragrance doesn't have the ability to poperly stand out. Not as bad as I initially thought yet somewhat of little interest. Rating: 6.5/10

I kinda thought the vote for aqua Fahrenheit was a little odd, but I shook my shirt and I can see it a little bitty bitty bit. In that my kid has lice so my head itches kinda way. So in all seriousness I actually like this because it is a different type of aquatic. Which I never wear. So it gives me something to wear when aquatics might be more appropriate. When I got it I was already wearing something so I gave one spray into the air in my car and my car smelled like it for 3 days. So I am experiencing it on me for the first time. Nothing special but not something to be mad about. Full price blind buy, okay then mad maybe.

Okay, bear with me. I'm not saying the two fragrances are alike at all, but there is a brief moment where the sandalwood reminds me of SJP Stash. This isn't an insult. I'm a fan of that one. Both go through that very distinct opening but that's where they seperate after 5 or so minutes. Crazy fragrance that, as mentioned below, has some very unique conipher aspects to it. This apparent marine accord is also interesting. I like it. I didn't, but then I did. Can't say too much about it apart from santal wood chips soaked in ocean water, dried and then burnt while pine incense smoke billows about. Fascinating.

!! the right notes for santal wood are as follows: Topnote: Nutmeg, Black Pepper, Juniper, Violet Leaves, Kardamom Heartnote: Sandalwood, Atlas Cedarwood, Patchouly Basenote: Frankincense, Ambergris! I tested it 2day !!on my skin ;:sea water, juniper and oakmoss! ldidn ́t smell any sandalwood!!!!! may be I should give it some time to try again :( . for now it should be named :( see water) aqua fresh montale !It is not bad!! but of course for its price, I would prefer another fresh perfume with less price!! I give it 7.5/10 as a summer fragrance ! and 6.5/10 for the price.

Montale has mastered the mass fragrance money extraction scheme, along with mancera for that matter. Release something for the first year that is strong and loud and then the next year formulate it to watered down junk. This is the story with this one. Its the faintest juniper smell with a mix of airy nothing. How are people claiming they smell anything good coming from this? There is far better montales or manceras that smell better and last just as long, 30 minutes.

Smells good. Something keeps telling me to buy a bottle. Violet leaves is note that was left out in the pyramid. Spicy fresh and masculine. Its pleasant and natural. Pepper, nutmeg and juniper are the main notes. In the same category of Aqua Di Parma Ginepro. I agree with the 212 comparison also. Theres better more uniquer marines scents out there but if you want something masculine and regular everyday water scent for a day out on the boat this is it.

@ alfarom - i agree with you. Main "problem" with Montale's perfumes that they have monster longevity. In this case it is really the problem coz we have to wait couple of hours to reach nice and pleasant drydown. In my opinion it isn't worth doing this! We have to abide way too long with synthetic, generic and chemical scent. Once again Montale prove that his doing "love" (blac oud, attar, red vetyver) or hate "scents" ( white oud, fougeres marines).

Immeditaly after spraying this I wanted to get in the shower!! I own Carolina Herrera 212 and I stopped wearing it after a while. Its extremely masculine, extremely strong and very long lasting but it's so potent that it gives me a headache. It's a good job I bought a sample of Montale Santal Wood and not the full bottle. If anything, its an exact clone of Herrera 212.

Seen it get compared to 212 by Carolina Herrera and a longer lasting more powerful version of that is a pretty spot on way to describe it. I bought it purely on that description and it absolutely didn't let me down. Not going to re-invent the wheel but a pleasant smell all the same. Would never buy another bottle of 212 now I have this

Reviewing as a woman; I don't really enjoy the opening but the dry-down is a very nice woody scent. The opening definitely is more masc leaning. I agree with the others here, it is pretty generic but that's also what I love about it. I wouldn't purchase a full bottle, but I'll enjoy what I have and part ways with this fragrance.

everything from montale is so unique, they are not practical for your average user. Montale is the type of house for true fragrance enthusiasts that want to try something out of the ordinary. If you're new to the fragrance game then monatle isn't a house for you
