The New Rose

Since I've had some time with testing this, I pick up rose lots and lots of rose no sign of the other notes on my skin whatsoever, and to me the scent bubble is around arms length. But while walking around I could pick up whiffs of it in the air I'd say this is a more of a personal scent. Not too strong nor offensive compared to the other Montale fragrance I've tried. The New Rose is more soft and subtle and I may be kicking myself at moment because I can see myself getting a bigger bottle of this. Oh and also I'd say The New Rose is quite delicate, and for me it can be compared to lying in a massive field of roses or to smell of scented rose water.

OK I think I take that back.. in the drydown, I guess you might actually call this one unisex... it's basically very clean and fresh, certainly not musky or sharp or spicy or any of the masculine qualities, but also not very sweet or anything. It smells nice. And I am SO. IMPRESSED. with the longevity. Through a shower and 20 hours and it's still there. That is on my skin mind you, which has zero fat in it or under it, and 9 out of 10 fragrances do not last more than 2-4 hours... So I will give this one a full wearing and see what's what... Mark

Just reviewed this on YT, together with the other new Monatale release Aoud Legend. RealFrags for RealMen. This one here is nice: fresh rose, not too sweet. Rather mild, not too nuclear, yet rather long lasting as a skin scent. Thumbs up if you like rose.. Mark PS DEFINITELY a womens scent, no unisex here fullstop.

Very nice scent, but DEFINITELY not for men...

On my skin, The New Rose is a fruity rose scent. The peach, black currant, and raspberry hit my nose the strongest with rose and ylang-ylang as sort of the foundation. I wish I picked up on more of the lemon because a tart note would really elevate this. The vanilla and sandalwood give it a casual warmth without getting too sweet. I'd say it’s the kind of effortless, laid-back fragrance people reach for in the warmer months. A good “vacation” scent, if you will. One might even describe it as youthful, almost like something Victoria's Secret would release for the Summer. The sillage is not what I expect from a Montale fragrance, but longevity is definitely there. Right now, I've been wearing it about 7 hours, and I’m still catching whiffs of it. Overall, I like it enough to keep the bottle I've already purchased, but I wouldn't call it a "must have."

This is the kind of scent that I would gift to a child aged 5-11 as a first introduction to the world of fragrances : it's flat, inoffensive and sweet-smelling. The opening is not very nuanced : it's soapy and very rose-forward. After about 2 hours, the top notes subside enough that the fruity accords can come through, somewhat adding to the complexity of the fragrance. Nevertheless, this fragrance never quite reaches for the "wow" factor - it stays fairly simple throughout. It won't turn any heads I don't think, but it might be a good option for people who like inoffensive scents. The sillage is fairly intimate, and the scent lasts for 3-4 hours between reapplications. Vanilla notes tend to come out only during cold weather for me, about 2 hours post-application. EDIT: It's so weak that I can't smell it over my lightly scented hand cream. A surprise given the typical potency of Montale fragrances.

Weak, girly, fruity floral scent. When I want to smell this kind of scent, I would take $10 cologne. Biggest disappointed in Montale fragrances.

I had my eye on La Colle Noire for a while but it wasn't available in my country so I thought of looking for a dupe. Lo and behold I found this on Fragrantica and the notes are almost identical save for the dry-down. So I bought this one hoping for an easy-reach rose scent (my previous one was Stella by Stella McCartney which, incidentally smells a lot closer to La Colle Noire than this does). Anyway, this smells nothing like La Colle Noir, maybe a wee bit of a rose kick but that's about it. Furthermore, The New Rose has a sharp, screechy, underlying metallic note that I cannot put my finger on (my suspicious lay on the lemon or the lily of the valley or maaaaaybe the blackcurrant? I don't know). What's more, the sweetness of the fruits are totally drowned by that screechy note (let's call it The Screech from this point onward) and the rose's powdery note (which is quite prominent) is clashing horribly with The Screech. The only time(s) when this perfume smells adequate was when it was sprayed on clothes a few hours prior and you are now getting subtle whiffs here and there or smelling it through a medical mask which filters out The Screech (seriously, through a mask it smells like a delightful fruity sweet rose, no Screech! Must be some big ass molecules akin to damn a virus!). The dry-down (after about 2hrs) is much more forgiving than the opening and the heart. The Screech has now become The Whimper but HONESTY who wants to live through a Screech and a Whimper through their perfume?? I'm selling this and good bloody riddance. Someday I'll just buy La Colle Noire.
