Duke of Burgundy

This movie is one of my favourites that I've seen so far this year, so of course I had to try a perfume bearing its name. On me it's not very green at all, it starts of quite leathery and gradually becomes more soft and musky. The osmanthus reveals itself after about an hour, and makes this a very wearable but sexy fragrance. Dirty but composed, reflecting the aura of the film. Beautiful.

A beautifully-composed musky suede, powdery and a little sweet with the purple-floral heliotrope popping through. This is a winningly wearable clean-skin scent, utterly full bottle worthy.

I cannot claim that I know the movie The Duke of Burgundy. But I can appreciate fragrances being made to fit another artistic view, and the journey this fragrance took me on made me want to see the actual movie. The fragrance is a clean and soft leathery suede that initially is very pleasant and light, though, slightly masculine. The initial spray on my skin gives a green and spicy scent, but at the same time it is as clean, sterile, and anonymous as it was on the paper strip. The leather is shining obviously through right from the start, and it makes the fragrance soft and almost velvet-y. But it is not smooth, it is powdery in the most intoxicating way. It makes you want to smell and smell and smell and smell until your head hurts and you think that you have smelled so much and so hard that your brain chemistry is altered forever. In the drydown the animal notes emerges, and I can understand the review that says “pissy, sweaty funk”. Still, I don’t find it all too negative. Because in this perfume it just makes sense??? In a very very weird way??? It is absolutely not a perfume I would wear myself, but it is a smell that I could crave? It is a melancholic memory in an old suede jacket that you’ve forgotten in the back of your closet.

"Duke Of Burgundy" deserves a viewing (Peter Strickland's movie, British romance, erotic and lesbian drama) but also an elaborate review. The name refers to the European butterfly present throughout the film. In short, I did not find the movie amazing, but on the other hand visually and aesthetically pleasing, that's for sure. Dominant Notes: Skin, Leather, Varnish Accord, Musk, Animal Notes Secondary Notes: Peach, Davana, Cedar, Amber, Heliotrope Discreet Notes: Green Notes, Osmanthus, Angelica, Sandalwood Non-existent Notes: Cereals, Freesia, Jasmine A hushed and powdery atmosphere which smells of cyprine. For haters of "Féminité du Bois" you will have to move on. Its opening of cleanliness and soap dissipates quickly. I find the sweet acidity of an Oud wood, the smoke caused by the death of a moth on a light bulb, of its burnt downy wings, but also the spices of a skin induced by an invisible Cumin. After 30 minutes, it is mostly musky, like the neck of a woman who is no longer very young. A smell of waxed wooden furniture, cold ash, satin and muslin. Leather laces, old occult manuscripts, and in the same room there is a cigarette unextinguished and windows rarely opened. A north-facing mansion, constantly plunged into darkness, while the Leather note strengthens under an earthy and cold "Iris Root" effect. After an hour a more masculine ribbon appears, a damp smell of soil, but I also catch very distinctly this dizzying Davana, Cedar, and invisible Gaïac, Cloves and Cypriol. This fruity smell of overripe Peach matched with a caustic and lacquered Wood (paint varnish and solvent) makes me feel uncomfortable... not to mention this naked skin belted with a sado-maso Leather suit... it's too much for me. It's a perfume that I don't like and makes me nauseous after 45 minutes. If you've seen the film, smell the perfume out of curiosity. I must admit that it is accurate and fair. 6/10

Osmanthus, a note that defies separation between different olfactive groups: fruit, flower leather. Makes them sound stupid, pretentious. Who came up with these categories, anyway? "Fruity", my daughter said immediately, and I myself was reminded of Tom of Finland's moist vinyl suede - but easier on the skin and more... naked? And simple? Clean skin of a human body still in bed after an evening nap, and then shoe polish? - used to treat the animal skin that nice shoes are made of. At the border of carnal, but still flowery and still light like musk. You are opened for your desires and pleasures but only to the ones you are choosing, or are chosen by. A passionate, complex private life, yet still preserving the purity and the innocence.

The Duke of Burgundy is one of my favorite modern films, and I love an animalic floral, so this one was a given for me. And it doesn't disappoint. Like the film, it's carnal, chaste, cerebral, and playful. The fragrance is both beguiling and confounding. To my nose, the varnish accord is its most challenging facet. It's truly astringent and potentially off-putting against soft, powdery florals and fleshy skin. Once it mellows, it reminds me of a more refined ELdO's Putain des Palaces. As a lover of the film, it transports me right back into Peter Strickland's world. For the uninitiated, I imagine that it's an off-kilter but weirdly sexy concoction

Duke of Burgundy starts deliciously smoky and leathery, after 5 minutes or so it reaches a plateau of woody cleanness that seems to be the final stage of the fragrance but it isn’t, if you’re patient enough the aseptic woodiness abandons the spotlight and lends its place to the most delectable and aristocratic powdery scent. Longevity is terrific but the sillage is medium, anyway, a masterpiece.

Peachy green with a slightly pissy, sweaty funk. There is a chemical/pleather/varnish/vinyl thing going on but it is approachable and wearable and not distracting- it adds to a beautiful perfume but makes it interesting for the niche freaks. Really nice ! This house is so special.
