Angel Eau Sucree 2016

Definitely a gem for me - not a fan of the original Angel. I just love the sweet and cool vibe this projects. Beautiful combination of vanilla, cranberry and patchouli with just a little touch of meringue for the dry down. Very fresh, yet sweet and girly at the same time. Sophisticated, not a candy-like sweetness. Still has the angel DNA, but with a new kick to it. Instant love. Love the frosted bottle too.

Got this as a gift from Pearl Princess! The cranberry is soft and sweet, the vanilla is decadent yet not sickly sweet or powdery (just right) followed by a whisper of patchouli. I love Thierry Mugler's perfumes, this was another hit for me. Another lovely Summer edition, its worth it ^_^

I honestly can smell the original Angel in this perfume, the patchouli is unmistakable. It’s a stronger scent than what I’m used to, but still not as strong as OG Angel like my mom used to wear around me when I was little. The beginning is kind of suffocating, but give it a good 20-30 minutes and it dries down to something a lot more bearable and sweet, which is where it diverges from Angel’s usual heaviness. I wouldn’t spray it on my skin very often but I could mist it in the air and walk through it. Odd comparison, but I remember blind-buying Insurrection II Wild by Rayane (a male fragrance) assuming it would smell like my usual Tobacco Vanille, and I wound up thinking it smelled A LOT like something by Mugler. After sniffing this one, I can say that Eau Sucrée and Insurrection smell VERY similar, the former being more feminine in nature with a more gentle drydown. Overall a good scent, and I think it’s gonna keep growing on me.

I just got and opened it about an hour ago, so the perfume hasn't had enough time to set yet and this is only my first impression. I got this in the hopes that it will be like Angel EDT (the old comet version), but less powdery and more sour-fruity. Unfortunately it isn't. It is less powdery, but it's very creamy and milky instead (probably the meringue), and there isn't as much cranberry as I hoped. For now this is only a "like", it's nice, but I think I prefer Angel EDT and I'll hunt it down (because the comet version is getting pretty hard to find now that it's discontinued). If my opinion changes I'll add another review.

All 4 of the Eau Sucrée flankers are very similar: A nice combo of sweet meringue and sour red berries, with a manageable dose of Angel patchouliness in the background. In my opinion Eau Sucrée 2015 is the most well-balanced and complex one, with 2014, 2016 and 2017 in a shared second place. In 2014 I was excited about the sweet, whipped cream, cotton candy feeling of Eau Sucrée. The following year I was even more excited that they actually perfected all that in Eau Sucrée 2015. 2016 and 2017 was a let down because all we got was more of the same. Bottom line, if you got one of the Sucrées you basically got them all.

The versions of Eau Sucree are confusing. I think I liked it better the last time I tried it, but I guess that must have been the 2015 version. The one I tried this time was 2016, I'm sure because the 2017 bottle has a different texture (it's glittery without the rough frosted spots). Eau Sucree 2016 is very different from the original Angel. The first blast is cloyingly sweet, full of red berries with a bit of a burnt caramel note. The berries have a strong menthol/eucalyptus edge, which I don't enjoy combined with their sweetness. It reminds me of cough syrup, the purple Airwaves gum and some vape liquids. After a while it calms down, the mintyness vanishes and it feels a little less sugary. Now it's meringue, vanilla, caramel and some berries, still a bit burned. I can't detect patchouli here at all. I wish I did, maybe this would make it smoother. Not for me, but try if you enjoy cold and very sweet red berry notes.

The opening: super sweet and cloying! The second stage: the red berries and meringue start to show up! The dry down: sweet & sour!!! As the original Angel goes perfectly as a unisex fragrance, I guess this sucrée Edition might not!! It’s a bit more feminine, loud, and super sweet and sour! For me the sour red berries note stays with me all around the lifecycle of the fragrance, and has the “patchouli-sweet” feeling for-sure!, but unfortunately it doesn’t have the milky/creamy feeling to it at all, as somebody else has said, it has the burnt caramel note instead!! I would say I enjoy other berries fragrances I own, more than this edition of angel; I have never been fond of the original angel, and a matter of fact I really hate it “the original”, but I find the sucrée edition more fun and interesting to wear,,, it is unique!!

This review is for the 2016 release only. I have not tried releases from other years. The top note on this has a bit of the sour that you might sense in the original Angel but it just kind of hints at it, it isn’t really like it too much. It’s much sweeter at the same time. As with the other Mugler perfumes I have tried this is a sillage monster and it lasts a LONG time so go lightly with the application. The thing that is most striking to me about this fragrance is that to me the dry down of this smells remarkably similar to La Vie Est Belle. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just if I wanted La Vie Est Belle then I would have purchased LVEB. That’s all. Still very pretty and garners compliments when I wear it.

In spite of its name and design, it's VERY different from the original Angel. The distinctive patch/vanilla is still present, but way more stealthy. The powdery chocolate caramel notes are gone. They were the reason why I'm addicted to the original EdP since the late 90's. The overdose of red berry sorbet can be a bit offensive and cloying. It's less unisex than the other Angel flankers, which you might want if you're looking for a very feminine/girly scent. It layers very well with EdP if you want to add a zesty twist to it. So not so much my cup of tea, but yet a highly respectable quality fragrance.
