Black Tulip

At first the scent is strong of alcohol and powdery florals. Off-putting right from the bottle, very old floral popuree scent. Once you spray it on the skin it transforms to a spicy dark floral scent. I wouldn't describe it as fruity at all personally, I feel the spice and the floral is more prominent but very fresh and alive. It's dark, sophisticated, reminds me of fall and yet isn't really an autumnal scent, and somehow feels like it can be both a daytime and nighttime scent perfectly. After the dry down is the best part. It Nestles beautiful onto my skin. It becomes a bit more of an ambery, slightly fruity, warmer muskier scent. Like vanilla on a dried jasmine flower and bark bouquet. Or like a hot drink on a rainy day. A mix of earth/plants and flower and amber. The cherry and plum either are very subtle or the combination of the scent melts then into the fragrance so they aren't noticeable on their own. Like a blueberry pie instead of a fresh blueberries. You can no longer smell the fresh tart blueberries but a new, more buttery amber scent. Lovely! This hasn't given me any headache at all so far either.

This might be my favorite scent from the discovery set I bought. I love patchouli, I love plum, I love pepper. It opens with that sweet plummy goodness and just a dash of the pink pepper. When it starts to dry down you get a touch of earthy spice from the patchouli. The longer it wears, the more the patchouli comes out, and it blends so effortlessly with the plum. I love fruitchoulis and this particular one is stunning. The violet lends a little bit of powder to this and it’s well done. It’s really pretty, but this little rollerball doesn’t provide much in terms of sillage. It’s an intimate scent on me. I’m wondering how different the spray would perform. I’m not sure if this is full bottle worthy, but based on the rollerball I don’t think I would purchase it. My wrist has to be about 2 inches from my nose for me to smell it. It’s a lovely scent, though. It’s simple but it scratches that itch for me, as I’ve been craving plum scents a lot lately.

I have to hand it to nest, they know their brand, and they know how to create fragrances that fans can safe buy other choices in their line. I can't decide whether this or Indigo is my favourite in the line yet. I find Black Tulip to be very addictive and I couldn't stop smelling myself. Everything in the notes pyramid says I should dislike this fragrance, as I am not usually a fan of plum notes (gets too cloying jammy sweet) and pink pepper (sensitive to it and usually winds up being the only scent I smell). However BT is so well blended, it's not overly sweet at all. The plum is juicy and closer to a fresh plum rather than jam and the patchouli helps deepen the scent. The iris offers a very pretty powdery-ness and just enough pepper to make it a teeny tiny bit spicy.

This one is delicious. A seductive, fruity floral with the perfect amount of spice. I had Midnight Fleur before it was discontinued, and I can honestly say I like this one quite a bit more. It’s less sweet and more sophisticated. I can pick up every note listed here, the fruits and patchouli are strong but they certainly don’t overpower the violet or pepper notes. I think they all play together beautifully. Well done. Delectable. I’d wear this most of the year, but it seems more suited for night. Decent longevity but sits close to the skin and is gone after 5-6 hours. I love all the dark feminine/witchy/vampy descriptors, that’s my vibe and this one fits the bill—running to get a full size once the rollerball runs out!

I went to Sephora last weekend to get the Wisteria Blue. Hmmmm -- smelled that one and 5 minutes in - ugh. So I toyed around with the other roller balls and found Black Tulip. WOW! This is amazing! Yes, hints of Black Amethyst and LVIE but truly -- it's a gorgeous fragrance all on its own! The drydown is amazing... I'm going back to get the spray and will cherish this for awhile. I have about 500 bottles of perfume...OMG I can't believe I admitted this to the world -- I mean, like I have a whole bedroom assigned to my addiction. And honestly, I probably only really like 50 of them! Eeks, I need help! :) Happy sniffing everyone!!! Grab this - it's really good! It lives in my top 50 FOR SURE!

Perfect scent for rainy evening or winter night. Violet+patchouli combo is never failing for me. I like the pepper note to make it fuller. Has nothing to do with tulips, not even close scent-wise. Juicy and heavy smell. On my skin actually scent has green note to it. Drydown is more woody. Secretive, seductive like a dark night. The bottle picture actually captures the feel this fragrance creates. If Tom Ford Black Orchid seemed a bit too heavy and complicated than this might work as lighter alternative. Plum is noticable at the beginning, but this note is not enough to make it truly fruity. Overall, very decent buy for the price if you like this style of scents.

Typically I go for sweet scents or citrus type of smells. My signature is Chloe EDT as a point of reference. I purchased rollerballs of every Nest scent that I could find and this one is my favorite. It smells nothing like anything I would typically wear but it has an addictive sensual scent that I cannot get enough of. I immediately ordered the 1.7 ounce from QVC. Before I got the rollerballs, I thought that citrine or dahlia would be the one but both of those are EXTREMELY mainstream and boring. Smells like generic everything else but this Black Tulip reminds me of Black Opium but better with better longevity. Very nice and going to be great this winter.

Looks like I've finally found a clone of the long-forgotten "Black Amethyst" by Bath & Body Works. Wow! I realize some will find this too potpourri-ish, but it's intoxicating to me! And it doesn't have any *vanilla* in it to make it more palatable for the masses, only plum, pink pepper, violet, and patchouli. DEFINITELY in my Top 5. UPDATE: Very strange, wearing it again (full sample vial from Sephora) and it doesn't smell the same. I understand I MIGHT either have a cold, or possibly something else... but it doesn't smell the same. Will have to wear again ANOTHER time to know for sure how much this smells like Black Amethyst.

I think Black Tulip is an apt name for this scent. It's dark and juicy, with a strong fruity-floral opening and an uncomplicated sweet patchouli drydown. The pink pepper lends some bright spiciness, but it's definitely in the background compared to the ripe plum note. I don't pick up any of the herbal or grassy facets usually present with violet, but this scent definitely does smell like to colour purple to me, if that makes any sense. On me, it lasts for 3-6 hours with moderate projection. I don't reach for it all the time, but it's an easy fragrance for nighttime or cold weather.

This was an absolutely pleasant surprise. I found a travel spray at the store and sprayed a bit on my hand. By the time I was checking out, it was in my cart. I have not stopped smelling my hand all day. It’s a really hot day today, and it’s great. I bet it’s even better in cooler weather. I am picking up something that is reminding me of Byredo’s Bibliotheque (not saying they smell the same, but it is one of my favorite scents) - and I think it must be the plum! This is outstanding - somehow gothic and “Penny Dreadful” without being actually dreadful or macabre at all.

Loveeeee. This is such a great blend of fruits and patchouli; I layer this with Burberry her eau de toilette to create a beautiful juicy flowery patchouli bomb, and yes, I smell egregiously fruity but I get a lot of compliments on that combo. My only qualm is that its longevity falls short and I find myself reapplying every four-ish hours, give or take. Overall I really enjoy this feminine take on the patchouli note which I find to be so polarizing to the majority; planning on buying a full size once I run out of my travel size heheh

I think this is beautiful. Mind you only smelled on paper! 24 hours have past and i can still smell it vividly. It's definately an evening fragrance or at least a cold weather fragrance. I love the bottle and the vibe of it. It is sweet and somewhat mysterious. However.... i would only buy a small bottle of it because i know i would never finish it. It's not an all occassion scent and because of the strength can be somewhat polarising. Reminds me of a cross between Jimmy Choo EDP and Jimmy Choo Fever. If they had a baby! lol

Wearing this for the first time and I’m in love. I’ll edit if I feel different after several days of testing it. But at the time I feel like this is really underrated and deserves a lot more attention. It’s so deep and rich. It’s like more grown up version of Tocca Maya. Sexier. Even reminds me of VS Very Sexy in a very indirect way that I can’t really put my finger on. I don’t have a good nose for being able to agree or disagree with scent profiles and notes. All I can say is that this is just really good. Sultry.

One of my most complimented perfumes. Love the combination of plum, flowers, and spice. It smells very similar to Club de Nuit and Coco Mademoiselle. I’m not saying it’s a clone for either one. But they could all be siblings of the same family. The longevity and sillage are great on me. I get at least 8 hours when sprayed on my skin and clothes, which is how I spray all my perfumes. And anytime I wear this perfume I’m told I leave a scent trail so the sillage is great. Will always keep a bottle of this on hand.

I love patchouli and I love plum, so Black Tulip is right up my alley. This is one of the better-lasting Nest perfumes on my skin, which is appreciated. I find that Black Tulip really evolves from a nice fruity patch into something a lot deeper and darker. Not heavy or cloying, just a nice doubling down on what makes the scent great in the first place; I think that, once the plum disappears after several hours, the violet comes out to play more while the patch base stays relatively constant.

highly underrated. it is an interesting mix of fruity, spicy, and tastefully sweet that for me, works well for most kinds of weather because it is not too much of any one quality. it shines most though during night and autumn, though, since it is very sexy and evokes vampire imagery for me. i will warn that it is a bit patchouli-heavy, so if you are not into that, you will probably dislike this fragrance. i love sexy vampire fragrances, though, so i love it!

First sniff from the bottle and I was immediately reminded of the original Repetto, which is also a plum + patchouli combo, but much sharper. Black Tulip starts out with a kick of spice from the peppercorn, but that quickly dissipates and into a soft floral, with depth added by the plum and patchouli. This works well as a night time or winter fragrance for the tropical climate I live in. It's enticing in an intimate way.

I love this one. I have a small roller sample now but looking to get a bigger size. I like wearing this for casual (not super fancy) dates with my hubby. It gives me a dark yet fresh vibe. Something to wear with a leather jacket and red lipstick lol. I'm super surprised that I like it this much being that I normally don't like cherry fragrances b/c many others seem medicinal. This does not. The notes are a smooth blend.

This is my most favorite fragrance of all time. I get compliments all the time. It has a strong note of patchouli that I didn’t realize at first, but the way it is wrapped in a violet, it is a very feminine scent, and although it is quite strong at first, it’s not nauseating. It is very grounded and fits wintertime and fall, but I still wear it all year long.

This was my favorite right out of the box of 5 Nest collection I purchased. Every time I wear it, I like it more and more! It opens beautifully sweet and fruity floral yet has a mystery to it that grounds the notes and makes it feel classy and dark...maybe secretive. Every note in this works perfectly with my chemistry. It makes breathing more fun :)

Just finished my bottle of this, it is sooo good. Men love this perfume on me it always gets me compliments. It's a sweet, patchouli floral woody scent that is just divine. It also smells a little smokey to me and I think it could be unisex. If you are a dancer looking for a new fragrance let me tell you this perfume got me alllll the tips ;)

This is the first Nest perfume I have bought and I am in love. I have tons of perfume and this perfume is so different from others that I have smelled. It is a dreamy, violet scent that is heavy but beautiful and dark. I now have to go to Sephora and smell all of the nest perfumes because I am sure I am going to love them.

Black tulip is one of my faves ! It’s dark and is definitely fruity and patchouli based . Smells a lot like bath and body works into the night . It also really reminds me of coco Mademoiselle without the citrus. I love it! The later dry down has a very nice clean soapy quality to it that I’m loving

Our youngest daughter chose this fragrance for her mum. What a beautiful choice for Mother's day. I adore this fragrance on my wife, very mysterious, soft, feminine. Gents, buy this one for your significant other and she won't be disappointed. A beautiful floral bottle as well.

Very pretty with some sultry ripe dirtiness from the plum/patch combo. Very reminiscent of the Chloe Namade range, specifically the Absolu. Not exactly dupes but very very close sisters. I think the patchouli in here does a very similar thing to the oakmoss in Nomade Absolu.

This fierce and spicy creation is my very first fragrance from Nest. The juicy blend of dark plum and rich black cherry blends seamlessly with an earthy patchouli base, while a kick of pink pepper adds an edgy, seductive spice and a slightly vampy vibe. I really like it.

Got this in a sample rollerball size, I'm finding it enchanting. It feels intimate and feminine, definitely night time/sultry vibes. I get strong fruit notes, as well as a hint of the pink peppercorn. I like dark florals, so this is probably my favorite Nest fragrance.

My favorite of the Nest fragrances. Something mystical and old fashioned about this fragrance, very Victorian lady. I love the soft, violet floral, powdery scent this fragrance envelopes me in, best suited for evening. I'd purchase this again.

This is a fruity spicy scent with some woody base notes to ground it. It's not an overly sweet scent, which I appreciate, and it's not overpowering. A few sprays are required for it to last through the day. Love the art on the bottle too!

Yes yes yes a thousand yesses!!!!! This is my jam like I can’t!!!!!! Like this is the scent of my soul. It’s is sweet patchy like LVEB. But slightly less sweet. This is like sexy Woodstock ‘69 girl, bathing in a river girl. So good.

it just smells good. i don't think it smells alluring or sexy or anything like that it's just good. it's giving your cooler older cousin you only see a couple times a year at thanksgiving or christmas

Black Tulip threw me off at first. Upon spraying, I got hit with something fruity, but chemical and medicinal–almost exactly like cherry tylenol or nyquil. Then after a few minutes, that medicinal funk went away, and left in its place a pleasant, round, juicy, dark and full-bodied plum fragrance, with a hint of earthy and herbaceous green patchouli. I also get a hint of peach of apricot, and just a touch of cherry, something a little brighter and sparkly among the darker juicy notes. I'd describe this as a classic fruit-chouli. Plum and patchouli and the first and foremost important fragrance notes here.The violet and pepper are pretty subtle, with the pink pepper reading as the most subtle of rose notes, almost–but note quite–placing this closer to the fruit-rose-chouli of the Armani Sí or Coco Madmoiselle camp. Despite its few notes, Black Tulip is decently deep and well-blended. Nest is definitely a less-is-more kind of brand, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I think Black Tulip works. It's a dark and juicy, sweet, sour and a little savory, a happy medium between fruit and chypre. Not my style, but it'd be a fantastic easy reach for cooler weather and could even double as a sophisticated evening scent. For those wondering if this is discontinued, it was fully stocked at my local Sephora and is still being sold on the official Nest site, among others. So fret not.

Interesting to read the other reviews after I've tried Black Tulip rather than before. I get a strong black cherry and plum scent with a little spice and background damp soil note. To me it smells like fresh flowers blooming in recently turned earth with a little spicy wood scent like weathered beauty bark. When I smell it I can picture the black star pattern inside one of our blooming tulips as I inhale their scent, so to me it's a very spring new flower bloom scent. Fascinating. I don't usually get such a vivid reaction to a perfume. I can't tell if I actually like the scent enough to wear it all day or if others would like it on me. It's a interesting fresh dark floral damp soil smell that is really unique and quite impressive. The more I smell it as I type this the more I think I want it no matter if others think it smells good, just to have the experience of smelling it and having that vivid reaction again and again. It's not a mainstream scent. I don't think I've ever experience a perfume like this. Edit: after sitting with the softly spicy cherry, violet, patchouli dry down for a while, I feel what other reviewers said when they rated this an autumn scent. This is a different experience for me, a fresh flower damp earth spring scent, that becomes a warm and spicy wood and dried fruit scent like mulled wine by a wood burning fire.

Black Tulip is straightforward fruitchouli. The nearest approximation to it, which it immediately brought to my mind, is Flowerbomb Midnight. The plum here smells extremely similar to blackcurrant used elsewhere, albeit without any hint cat piss. It’s juicy and very synthetic-smelling, which is fine by me. The pink pepper gives some spice in the top note but quickly fades while the plum and patchouli are strongest throughout. The patchouli is in no way overwhelming but definitely present in a more green than incensy way. Not really getting much of the violet or anything floral, honestly. I can see how this resembles the old BBW Black Amethyst, but that scent always gave me a headache and was too saccharine while this doesn’t irritate me at all. I don’t really get the LVEB comparisons because that is MUCH sweeter with a strong gourmandy base—I’m not a fan of it, to be clear. Both of the compared fragrances are way sweeter than this, and I prefer Black Tulip personally. Still, it’s a like rather than a love for me because frags like this are mega common and this one has very weak sillage. For those reasons I think it’s overpriced, but obviously it comes off very differently to different noses/body chemistries—try it and see. I’m having fun going through the Nest rollerball sampler set!

Oh wow. I have a thing for fragrances with just a few notes that smell complex and this one goes on exactly like that. What I'm detecting is the plum and violet which shimmer. I think the shimmer effect is because the plum is so juicy so it evokes ideas of water. As it settles down, the patchouli comes out and plays with the top note. I think it's the patchouli that others are calling "powdery"; it doesn't smell powdery to me, but I think that's what other people are mentioning. The pepper is there somewhere underneath it all, but it never comes out directly. The silage on this is slightly larger than on other Nest perfumes which, to me, means it sits close to the skin + 6 inches. Unless you're waving your arms around or bathing in it, it's not going to throw itself at other people much. Which, to me, is a good thing. I have scent sensitivity so when other people's perfumes do that I'm like choking even if it's a cool scent. Speaking of, this isn't triggering any sinus issues or headaches for me. If you're sensitive to patchouli, I'd say this is a "no". Otherwise, if you find the notes appealing or at least not offensive, I'd recommend giving it a try. As of the time of this review, Sephora has a Nest variety of 8 roller ball fragrances with .1 oz (3 mL) of fragrance in each one.

On me, this is a strong, fruity-floral scent. Being someone who doesn't ordinarily/automatically gravitate toward fragrances of this sort... the fact that I find it pleasant and inviting is a good thing! :) I get more of the ripe, fruity plum... with a hint of patchouli and pepper. It's smooth, well-rounded, and projects more than I thought it would. (I can smell this on myself all day, and I consider that a positive attribute... because... most of the time, I wear perfume for myself, and I *want* to smell what I am wearing at any given moment.) It remains "fruity/sweet" throughout its wear. If I had to choose a few similar, popular "fruitchoulis" to compare to this, I'd say it is in the same category as La Vie Est Belle or YSL Mon Paris, in terms of style... they played out in a similar way on my skin, but I find that I prefer Black Tulip to either of the aforementioned perfumes. If this *has* been discontinued, that's sad... as I was just getting to know it better, and I think it's a nice option (readily available brand, not quite "everyone has a bottle" mainstream, but not quite "too" exclusive).

I first smelled Nest's Black Tulip (BT) on a friend at a conference and really liked it. There's something reminiscent of LVEB and Si, though each is still distinct in performance and smell. I was surprised to see the patchouli note in this fragrance because I've never liked the note. BT's plum and violet are sweet and dominant in the opening. Using a heavy hand with this fragrance can induce a headache and likely bother those around you. The pink pepper and patch. do their best to tone down the sweetness. I like the rollerball because I can control how much product I apply to my pulse points. The spray might go on a little strong. Sillage and longevity are moderate-- with a light hand, I got at least 6 hours (though I also applied some on my top). It still smelled the same at the end of the day. I prefer to use this during colder months-- it performs better on my skin. I don't see myself using this during the summer unless it's on a cool night. I can see myself purchasing BT in future.

First wave of the fragrance is great, no complaints. Basic, sweet plum and some earthiness to compliment it. It mellows out too quickly, and as others have noted, takes on a more synthetic smell. However, I don't find it unattractive or harsh. It smells cheap and thats okay. I'd say it's a perfect fragrance for a teen, something to start them in perfumery. It's not complex, deep, intrusive, or really much of anything apart from a sweet plumby garden. As shiva-woman said below, it's a functional fruitchouli. At $75 for 50 mL it is way over priced imo. This is a cheapie fragrance and deserves a cheapie price. If I were to see it on sale for $20 or under I would get a bottle, as it's a perfectly good fragrance for when you want to smell decent but don't want to waste good juice. 5.5/10

A sexy fragrance, mysterious, night-time vibe for sure. The plum and juiciness of the fruit is the most prominent and very nice! I love fruitiness in a fragrance. After that I smell the pink pepper and Patchouli, this adds a spice and a hint of masculinity. This fragrance is very pretty and IMO feminine, but the spice *reminds* me of a mild cologne if that makes sense. Someone called this "The sluttiest of all the NEST fragrances" which made me laugh out loud, because it's true. A woman going out for a night with a cat winged eye-liner and sexy outfit would wear this. Not youthful, not mature. I like it. I do not know if I will pick up a full bottle though, because I am not in a season of life where I am going out at night often

This is one of those perfumes that I keep spray samples of in my bag as a "oh crap I forgot to put perfume on this morning" sort of scent. It pretty much goes anywhere, does anything. I wear it winter and summer, work or not. I can't imagine anyone finding it offensive. It won't win you any awards, but it's easy to wear and comfortable. On me it's mostly fruity plum and in that way reminds me just a touch of Midnight Poison. The rest of the scent is lightly sweet, a little very clean well behaved patch and some other light floral notes. Longevity is good but not mind blowing. I probably wouldn't buy a full bottle, I've just got more interesting stuff but I do enjoy it when I wear it.
