French Cancan

Found this for 9.99$ at a store in Québec. The bottle definitely gave me JPG Classique vibes, so I looked it up here and sure enough - Classique dupe with some great reviews. For 9.99 I couldn't pass that up, because I love Classique and my bottle has maybe a single spray left in it.. which has been sitting on my shelf for a few years. Anyway, I bought both the bottles they had and felt I'd won the perfume lottery. First few sprays were awful. I know to take that as a grain of salt and throw it over my shoulder, and wait. I've worn it a few times now and each time I have to spray it a ton (as if it's a body mist) and even then it doesn't last at all. It is a weak shadow of Classique and pales in comparison to its muse. Similar in scent with initial spray, but much weaker and no where near the depth, longevity or sillage. The bottle is beautiful and alone is worth the 10$. If you find this for 9.99 as I did, snatch it up and layer it with other perfumes, but don't expect it to last or leave any kind of trail, nor turn heads. It's light like a body spray. Not at all like an edp and nowhere near the class, quality or beauty of Classique. Don't pay more than 15$ and before you spray, lower your expectations lol Spraying this alone on its own it seemed to be gone within 30 mins. Maybe it needs more time to sit and do its thang in the bottle as some perfumes do. There's a name for this... though I can't think of it atm, I'll say, "marinate", which is not the word at all, but you know what I'm saying. I still "love" this, but I'll let this "marinate", allow the notes to "marry" and circle back here one day. Hopefully with a better review so I can reclaim the award for winning the perfume lottery that has now slipped through my fingers like warm sand. Feb 20, 2026 UPDATE: I just dug this out and sprayed it again now and initially it still smells fairly cheap - to the point I thought right away that I'd give it to the young teenage girl next door (it's still better than cheap BBW body spray), but as that initial blast of chemical warfare settles (fairly quickly), I am definitely getting more of the rich scents from Classique, though it smells very watered down still, unfortunately. The longer it settles on me, the better it smells, and closer to the original JPG than it was when I first bought, it for sure. This would be an office safe version of the original, as it doesn't seem to be too intense, though, I live alone and have nobody to give me feedback. I bet it's leaving a trail and cloud around me still, just one that is softer, which there's nothing wrong with that. This would likely get compliments and strikes me as a more winter leaning scent, so I'll try wearing this tomorrow when I head to the grocery store and see how it fares in the wild. The iris is SHINING in this btw and very well blended for a cheapy, if you love iris, you'll love this. A very clean Iris, not overpowering at all, though it is the strongest note I'm picking up. It's lovely.

Clean, Powdery & Sweet White-Floral-Marshmallow Scent... First Impression: This is a dupe of Classique Jean Paul Gaultier with good approximation and above average performance. I've tested it a few times now, and overall I'm getting a powdered-sugar, vanilla-marshmallow scent, with a pleasant clean laundry vibe in the background. I can definitely feel the powdery iris & white-floral marshmallow nuances, which are more forward than the notes would suggest here. Performance is quite good for year round wear. It's a love for me. Enjoy! Update 07/14/24: Tested this on the forearm today. There's a prominent star anise, but once on the skin, and the spray dries down it's beautiful. It really needs the skin imo. It's a thick, sweet, powdery, clean, white-floral vanilla with marshmallow-y hints, on a woody base to me. Once I've sprayed it enough times and the vanilla ages I will probably reserve for cold weather due to the thick sweetness. Update 06/26/25: Sprayed this on this morning, and wow! The vanilla has aged and this has gotten a lot sweeter & creamier, still with a marshmallow-white-floral vibe. The sandalwood has deepened too but it's really well blended and adds a creamy sweetness. The once prominent star anise has softened up a lot. Overall the most prominent notes I get are vanilla-iris-tuberose (although it's the softer side of tuberose). Love it.

Did I buy it for the bottle? Mostly, yes. But for $9CAD and change I figured even if it was terrible, it's still a cute addition to the shelf. My bottle was stamped 11/24, so already had lots of time to sit. I agree with the powdery, almost creamy, marshmallow comments. The anise isn't overpowering at all, in fact it's barely noticeable behind the really well balanced iris and its supporting florals. Because it's fluffy rather than syrupy, on my skin this holds up in high heat and humidity without becoming suffocating if applied lightly. The first few seconds are quite sharp, but the alcohol quickly fades away -- which is expected for a really cheap perfume, honestly. For how inexpensive it was, this has certainly beaten expectations. 8/10, would add to cart to meet the free shipping threshold again.

I was so skeptical of this brand, but I must admit that I'm now quite in love with French Cancan. First spray is pretty rough. I won't lie. It starts out as very sharp alcohol, but trust me. Just let it dry down and you will be rewarded with such warm vanilla, spicy star anise, and smooth sandalwood. I can't stop smelling my wrist! I really like the bottle too, it looks cute on my dresser. :)
