Neptune

Going through my Nicheend sample set. I was very eager to check this one out. I was hoping for an aquatic bomb and that's exactly what I got. This sits somewhere between TF's Oud Minerale, Zoologist's Squid and Liquides Imaginaire's Abyssis. It's not as salty as Squid or Abyssis and not as dark as Oud Minerale though. It's much fresher actually. The opening is refreshing, very slightly oceanic and spicy (peppery) but the drydown is the big difference. Neptune dries down very heavy on calone to my nose. Some have a BO relationship with that molecule but here, what I get a very refreshing watermelon note, it keeps it fresh and not anywhere as dark as the previously mentioned referenced fragrances. I think it'll work well in warm weather compared to the others which are kind of dark, especially for summer (Squid is too ambery for heat and Oud Minerale gets funky in the humidity). We'll see how it turns out but I think it might be my favorite among of all of these! It's just dark enough, just fresh enough and just oceanic enough. It's just designer-ish enough to not be offensive and be appealing but just niche enough to not fall into those mundane citrusy designer "aquatics". It lasts a pretty long time (a good 6-8 hrs, maybe more in the heat?) for this type of profile. A very nice surprise. The price is quite steep for this kind of DNA, though. Edit 2024-06-13: this is a lot more complex than at first glance. Very low key, inoffensive (even a perfume-avert colleague complimented it) but crowd pleasing scent. It's grown on me. Might be worth a FB for warmer seasons. Good stuff!

With NASA’s own phrasing; “Dark, cold, and whipped by supersonic winds, ice giant Neptune”. I expected something dark, cold, and watery. Yes, it’s watery, but not cold. If anything, it reads like a fairly common marine. It could have gone bolder; saltier, more briny, even more seaweed-forward; but instead what I get is salt, calone, and a strong ozonic sheen. Then, toward the end, it morphs into something entirely different: as if ancient Sumerian gods get fed up with Neptune and go bzzzzz, shoving the planet toward the sun. It stops being the farthest planet; poor Pluto deserves a mention here; and somehow becomes the closest. The surface dries out: no water, no ice, only wind and sand. An atmosphere forms over the core, and suddenly there’s desert everywhere. Sand whips through the air violently. The saltiness remains, but it turns into a dry, windblown sand impression. Even if it doesn’t fully deliver on the theme, it could still appeal to people looking for a softer, more approachable marine; especially fans of Acqua di Sale, or those who enjoy Pazzaglia’s sea line. Also: the “similar” suggestions I’m seeing are baffling. This doesn’t read lilac-based at all, and it has nothing to do with Squid. I am a huge fan of salty aquatic scents and this one hits the spot! It reminds me of my other salty fav from Regalian, another Turkish line, it's called Turkauz. I blind bought it as a twofer on a Maxaroma sale, which can be dicey but this was a smart decision. The combination of the water and amber is so appealing! The projection is good and it lasts forever! otherworldly for sure. Neptune is cold, stolid and blue on the outside and ice-saucy on the inside. So is this fragrance Not something you warm up to but rather respect. Ice queen vibes? sometimes thats just who you need to be! and as eventually you let them in to the softer core so will this scent as the musk and amber soften the cool spice.
