Caravansérail Intense

"Caravensérail" is one of my top 3 Nicolaï fragrances. 🖤 Dominant Notes: Coffee, Vanilla, Cardamom, Immortelle, Plum Secondary Notes: Cinnamon, Clove, Sandalwood Subtle Notes: Patchouli, Tonka, Amber, Raspberry This is a beautiful, cocoa-tinged, and bitter coffee fragrance, rather evolving with an Immortelle that reminds me of the smell of sand. From the Arabic "khan" and the Persian "karvansara", this name refers to a stopping place for merchants and their trade caravans that crisscrossed the Silk Roads and the deserts of the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa. The fragrance therefore evokes a sunset when the sky turns lavender, brass and copper, and the journey continues at night, under the stars. Coffee beans and Cardamom brewed in a chest, resins and tobacco, licorice sticks, candied and vinous plums, other sweet dried fruits, and spices smothered in burlap sacks carried by donkeys and camels. A blend of cultures and languages. The combination of coffee and immortelle disorients me, dry and herbaceous, somewhere between honey and chamomile, then fading into a sweet and woody Vanilla. As for the spices, they are implicit and not very dominant. It's a travel diary, an adventure, or a biblical tale. 🖤 9/10 🖤

I think many people were too fast with their opinion. My story was that I bought a bottle in Paris, arrived home and thought "where was my brain/nose when I bought it". Then a few days later, just passing by the pullover that had it on it, I was fascinated thinking "what smells here soooo good". And searched and searched, to realize that this was the drydown of Caravanserail... And then on another trip to Paris, I bought another bottle (!) to make sure I have the stock for travelling and the home bottle too! It is a complex fragrance that is the best understood and appreciated from distance, literally, others will be impressed, not you. The notes that it leaves on the path are among the fewest that I wish to resmell again and again.

Another gem from Patricia de Nicolaï. For me, Caravansérail Intense is “intense” primarily at the beginning, with an almost harsh blast of spices and coffee beans; then, within a few minutes, a warmth appears, creating a desert breeze of pleasure, a mix of stimulation and repose, further smoothed out with the appearance of patchouli as the dry-down develops. This is only my second Nicolaï fragrance (after New York Intense), but I really love the style of this house. (And I love that they offer 30 ml. bottles, making such luxury affordable.)

I simply love Nicolai, probably everything from her ... now It ́s my most unique brand ... i consider these scents sometimes more unique than some of Chanel ́s Les Exclusifs. Very noble, refined, coffee, plum, spices .... along with Ambre Intese my most fave from Parfums de Nicolai ... still not known to the masses a lot (thanks God for it)

This is a borderline masterpiece for me! Reminds me slightly of starlight by Xerjoff but better. Mostly a coffee blended cardamom fragrance with a nice patchouli drydown. So well blended. Very unisex leaning male. 9.5/10! Well done 👍

This succeeds where Épices Exquises failed. The profile is very similar, but this one doesn't turn scratchy with the nasty patchouli note. Here, it's more complex, balanced, and high quality. It's a lovely cardamom perfume.

To me it is the close relative to Starlight. In fact I like it better somehow.

Opens with a dense concoction of cardamom, cloves, ambrocenide and very chocolately coffee. The coffee isn't actually that prominent and doesn't really resemble freshly ground beans, despite the opening bringing to mind dark brown grains. There's a clear transition into the mid where the raspberry ketones and tonka round out the sharper edges of the ambrocenide and together, give the composition a VERY interesting boozy quality similar to the one in Pasha de Cartier parfum. But up close, it can sometimes smell like fermenting or composting fruit along with that cardamom/brown spice vibe - really quite unique. In the base, the ketones settle down, and with the tonka give the impression of plum along with that slightly boozy and chocolatey coffee-ish ambrocenide. Less refined than a designer scent, but the quality of the materials is higher imo. Longevity and projection both very decent but closer to average than strong when sprayed out of a fresh bottle. It's actually impressively balanced, despite the spicy materials. My favourite aspect of the fragrance is that it's not linear, highlighting different notes at different times. Really quite fun to experience, especially since the coffee comes out more in the sillage than anything else. Very much a fan of this style of scent too and can see it being well recieved during the winter holidays. Primarily an autumn and winter fragrance though. Could be too spicy for the other seasons. Along with the beautifully sleek bottle (never mind the crease down the sides), heavy metal cap and superb pressurized atomizer, it's a big thumbs up from me. Just don't expect Kerosene's Follow or TK's Coffee Addict. Closest relative might be something along the lines of Costume National's Homme edp with that sweet clove-cinnamon. If you like that one (and I do), you'll probably really dig this. Take that fragrance and drop it into the middle east and you're on the right track. Another win from Patricia. If this were released by the house of Amouage, one could imagine it being labeled "Amber Oud Pour Femme" as a duo counterpart to the existing Pour Homme version —"Amber Oud (2013)" of the Nicolaï. Caravansérail Intense is a fragrance of dramatic evolution, taking the wearer on a journey through several distinct phases. The opening is a soft, fruity-floral woody scent. To give you a reference point, it's very reminiscent of Dior's Rosewood (2020) : fruity, floral, and woody trio—carrying a smooth and slightly feminine feel. However, it undergoes a major shift after the initial stage. A prominent coffee note emerges, mixed with the powerful punch of a retro, 80s-90s style fougère. This completely changes the character of the scent, moving it into a much bolder and more traditionally masculine direction. Throughout its life, the fragrance is anchored by a woody base that is paradoxically both dry and vibrant. This complexity unfolds fully in the dry-down, revealing a multi-layered structure. On the surface, a powdery, "rose-oud-like" texture emerges, reminiscent of Ormonde Jayne’s Nawab of Oudh (2012) . Beneath this lies a retro, 80s-90s style fougère foundation that feels remarkably close to the spirit of Yohji Yamamoto Homme (1999) . And in a masterful stroke of self-reference, the sum of these parts—this intricate dance of woody, oriental, and fougère—ultimately resolves into an accord a bit similar to one of Nicolai's own creations: Amber Oud (2013) . In summary, Caravansérail Intense is a complex fragrance that tells a story in three parts. It's a journey from a gentle floral wood to a bold coffee-fougere, finally settling into a powdery, gourmand-ish, woody base. Rating: 7-7.5/10

Caravanserail opens as a complex fragrance that morphs and evolves throughout its wear. To my nose, Caravanserail is a mixed spice-bomb fragrance with an herbaceous, gently floral, slightly honeyed, arid & hay-like drydown. The perfume's opening is cardamom, cinnamon and LOTS of clove. The heart unfolds with continued spiciness, intense herbaceousness, woodiness, and a soft, gentle floral note that tempers the spicy opening. Perhaps this floral note is the emergence of immortelle, which can smell a bit "rosy" on occasion. Unfortunately, my nose does not grab much coffee (I love coffee as a perfume note). The perfume's base is tonka, amber and woodiness. To me a slightly bitter plum is evident in the perfume's background...never sweet, or prominent and never in the forefront. I detect more immortelle in the drydown adding an arid & dry, honey-like, grassy note to the fragrance. The tonka adds a lovely, slightly creamy, vanilla accord to the perfume's drydown. If ever there was a perfume that is greater than the sum of its parts, it would be Caravanserail. I like this perfume. It is unique & unusual. I've never smelled anything like it.

Caravansérail is one of the more unique coffee-based fragrances I’ve come across, and it’s actually quite lovely. Usually I’m not a big fan of coffee scents as the note itself can become very overpowering, but this is balanced to perfection. The coffee is of course the star - it’s very realistic and natural smelling, providing that rich bitterness and steamy warmth which is accentuated and partnered with an incredibly smooth and creamy note of cardamom. This pairing makes up the bulk of the scent, with gentle fruity touches and hints of woods in the background. Overall a really lovely scent. It’s very serene and relaxing to wear, I can imagine this would be perfect to wear to a cafe. It’s not a scent I plan on buying, as I said because I’m not a huge fan of coffee notes, but I can still admit this is fantastic.

Testing this today, and it's very intriguing. The immediate opening, as some have already noted, is surprisingly harsh. Like burned rather than roasted coffee and a very sharp blast of spice that I cannot identify and don't much care for. However, it quickly becomes a pleasant overdose of coffee with the fruit notes. The dry down is spectacular. I agree with ArkangeL, below, an his comparison to Dior Eau Noir. They don't really smell similar until the dry down, even though they do share some similar notes. And I am not an perfumer or expert, but I think it is the immortelle in the dry down that makes me going back to smell again and again. Performance-wise, it's not blowing me out of the water though the late dry down (as a more-or-less skin scent) is pretty tenacious.

I gotta say I had high hopes for this fragrance Some of my all time favorite scents are from the brand when I saw coffee in the notes before I tried it I wished for something a lot stronger It’s a smooth coffee fragrance closer to Arabian coffee mixed with the cardamom In the opening it was promising going to the mid it started to die down I guess it was my mistake to have high hopes of it either way it’s not a bad scent but nothing to rave about it’s definitely for people who prefer subtle fragrances Performance is good but could’ve been better

I have to say, this one is really not for me. The coffee does not come through much at all on my skin. It's a patchouli extravaganza. I do pick up this almost twig-like scent, which I enjoy and which probably comes from the cardamom. But, yeah, it doesn't suit me at all. The reason it's a "like" and not an "ok" for me is that I could imagine hugging someone on a first date and being like, oh, wow, hmm, intense, I like. But there's no way I'd put this on my body again. Will probably scrub it off in a sec, in fact.

Very pleasant coffee :P This is a spiced coffee with some sweetish notes and woody/powdery undertone. While am not a big fan of coffee note in perfumes, and as such no interest in wearing coffee dominant perfumes, I can still appreciate it. Leaning feminine to me. Well-balanced as all Nicolais I tried so far.

This might be my favorite Nicolai 😳 Prior to this, only Cuir Cuba left such a positive impression where I'd consider purchasing (no offense to her). It has both a great cardamon scent and a good black coffee scent (the plum aids in acidity), forgoing the overly sweet "latte" trend!

Fruity, spicy, aromatic - leans more masculine so I've softened it with a touch of Portrait of a Lady and the resulting combination is absolutely yummy.

As Iranian boy72 has mentioned, I fell in love with the name as soon as I had read it, especially thanks to its ties to the silk route and to South and Central Asia through language. I was given a bottle of Caravansérail back in the early autumn of 2022, when it had been freshly bottled. From the moment I sprayed it the first thing I could think of was the sweet Indian delicacy Sohan Papdi, or Pashmak as it is known in Iran, Pişmaniye in Turkey; Asian candy floss. It is incredibly sweet with the feeling of a kind of texture you can detect upon sniffing. Sugar and warm spices, especially cardamom and cinnamon, all come together to form the most delicious and warm, exotic fragrance. I get a hint of coffee right in the opening that, to me, gives off an edible bitterness almost reminiscent of toasted pastry. This is tempered by a fleeting note of thick and sticky fruit jam. The delectable sweetness is only further enhanced by the tonka, vanilla, and amber, with immortelle mirroring that pungent bitterness from the coffee bean opening, creating a spiced caramel note in the dry down, nestled by a soft musky base. Patchouli is also discernible, its damp, dark chocolate tones adding to that overall balance of sweet and earthy. In a nutshell, to me, Caravansérail smells like roasted chickpea flour mixed with powdered sugar and cardamom - a tiny cup of Turkish coffee on the side - but a haute cuisine version. Definitely a scent for colder days to feel toasty and comforted. (My only issue is the deep dry down, which becomes very bitter on me like fenugreek or burnt chicory thanks to the immortelle. It is not at all pleasant as a final impression).

From the name this clearly takes inspiration from the roadside inns along the Silk Road in the Middle East. They were multi cultural melting pots for traders carrying coffee, spices and other goods from the east to the west. All these influences are clearly evident in Caravansérail Intense. Opens with top notes of coffee absolute laced with cardamon before warm spices of clove and cinnamon are revealed in the heart, all enlivened by a sweet fruity accord which is handled with sufficient restraint that the fragrance never strays into gourmande territory. The spices are joined with patchouli and sandalwood which finally embeds into a dry amber accord of vanilla, tonka bean and immortelle. It’s all warm and very dry, as befits the desert theme. Performance is a little disappointing, projection is okay but it fades very quickly. It’s certainly an interesting and imaginative composition but I would have preferred the perfumier to bite the bullet and go full on gourmand as I think the dry spices would have come to life and be showcased beautifully with a lot more sweetness and extra vanilla. Would be good for layering with something much sweeter. As far as I’m aware the coffee served at caravansérails was typically served very sweet - much, much sweeter than this! I wish the perfumier had done the same.

Polite. Way too polite. A caravanserai for tourists, not travelers. Tourists about as adventurous as those on a cruise ship in 95 degree weather. It starts out promising, lots of coffee and cardamon, but wimps out about 10 minutes later. Someone got afraid of patchouli and cloves and decided its customer really wasn't someone who would ever be within 1000 miles of a caravan. A skin scent within 30 minutes. Disappointing because Nicolai knows how to make desert and/or India inspired fragrances. Their Incense Oud is fabulous, and this would should have been too.

Quite harsh in the opening, and then dries down to a patchouli-heavy scent on my skin. Not a fan. Great longevity.

I must admit that coffee isn't exactly a favorite note of mine when it comes to fragrance. I love drinking coffee, almost to a fault. However, in most instances, when I encounter a coffee note in a fragrance, it comes off as rather shrill, metallic, and all around unpleasant. I only have three fragrances in my collection that feature a coffee note: L'Artisan Parfumeur L'Eau du Navigateur and Noir Exquis, and the obscure but lovely Popy Moreni from 1997. In all three cases, coffee is a supporting note, which I think is exactly where it belongs at most. I just don't think having it in the foreground proves to be successful in most instances. Take Caravansérail Intense, for example, with coffee's pairing with a quite sweet plum and berries makes it feel exceedingly acidic to my nose, almost as if it as a back note of vomit (this wouldn't be the first time I've encountered this perception in coffee-forward perfume). The opening is so harsh and coarse that it just makes me impatient for it to dissipate for the later stages to come through—and as we know, first impressions are so important! I just can't see myself wanting to put up with the first half hour or so again. I think this would've been so much more enjoyable if the coffee was canned altogether and replaced with an increase of the cardamom, because once it overlaps the coffee and eventually replaces it here, its decent. Nicolai really missed the mark on this one, utterly and completely.

Rating: 😳🤧 Do I like it: It's okay Who it is: A hippie corporate intern in love for the first time in spring Smells I get: green coffee, raspberry, patchouli, tonka, sandalwood, metallic dry wood accord Meyer's Briggs type: ENTP, INTP I must say, I do thoroughly enjoy the opening with the green coffee, acidic raspberry and the fizzy clean patchouli tonka rising in the distance. Sandalwood in the heart is the pickle 🥒 type sandalwood, but it's overall balanced well and makes the fragrance refreshing. However, I suppose it may be something like dehydromyrcenol or some other chemical in the heart and drydown here which pulls a classic male shower gel on me, kind of woody and metallic. It annoys the heck out of me and we don't agree. That knocks it down a peg, though I enjoyed the start.

I had high expectations for it, but I guess cardamom isn't a note for me. It is truly high quality perfume and unisex. Hovever, for me (on me) it was a bit more masculine and I'm not into that. It lacked some sweetness I guess, and was very strong on spices, mainly cardamon, to the point where it had almost a savoury feel to it. It is great perfume, rich and complex, but I'm not the kind of lady who can pull it off.

☕🌿🤕 herbal organic shop chemical cleaner liquid ☕🌿🤕 MBTI: INTJ, INTP A strong, synthetic onslaught of bathroom lemon cleaner and cardamomchouli coffee. Citrus prompts an instant headache. Love the cardamom, though. Not sweet at all. Maison Tahite Velvet Coffee is similar, but doesn't leave me heaving on the bathroom floor with a migraine. It's an interesting genre of scent otherwise. Herbal/woodsy lemon coffee.

This might genuinely be the worst scent I've ever encountered. A single spray feels like I've been punched in the face with a fistful of cardamom, instantly giving me a headache every time. I'm not even sure it's fair to evaluate this as a scent because I clearly have some kind of hypersensitivity to green or black cardamom, I literally cannot smell anything else. My girlfriend finds it pretty intense at first but she says the drydown is nice after a few hours. At that point I can still smell it from two floors down. Absolutely vile.

Caravansérail is an olfactory storm of notes. No soft introduction of bergamot or other citruses. Instead, there is an overdose of cardamom with dark roasted coffee beans. This is the type of fragrance I might place in the category of Dior’s Eau Noire. Bitter, woody and heavy on the spices. Immortelle is an interesting note, as it tends to smell like maple or burnt sugar. Very aromatic, but plum and raspberry assist with a great first impression. While vanilla is listed don’t expect Black Opium, Intense Cafe or Black Phantom. Caravansérail is not gourmand whatsoever. It’s bold, daring and intense.

This is a really nice and interesting perfume. I love how coffee combines with cardamom in this one and plays hide and seek the whole time. The plum is present in the opening giving a licorice vibe and also the spices are quite noticeable making this fragrance very warm and spicy. I would've liked the immortelle to be stronger but that's just personal preference. Performance is quite good with good longevity, moderate projection and good scent trail. If you like coffee or cardamom you should try it.

This is Maharanih reincarated with a modern twist and a fuzzy coffee note atop where different note shave been used to give the same albeit slightly bolder effect. Patchouli is nicely blended with plum and something like a blood orange aroma which could be the raspberry. It's a somewhat acquired taste and not really a gourmand per se. Like all Nicolai's, it is well constructed and the notes do not fall apart. A good option in a world full of oud and wood.

This has an amazing coffee and cardamom opening. It really does smell like a spice market with dry and complex aromas. I also get a bit of fruit but it’s mostly about coffee and spices. It is unisex but too dry for me. I prefer a bit of sweetness so I blended it with Hilde Soliani Crema di Latte and that adds just enough milky smoothness and a touch of sweetness but not so much as vanilla. I love it for winter.

Thanks for the review RejdaPersa. I'm Bengali and my parents are from Kolkata. I love Soan Papdi although it's not as nice in London as in Kolkata. If the smell is similar then I def want to get my hands on a FB. I'm already in love as it is with the name and the connection to the Silk Road.

I suggest you really allow this one to breath after opening for awhile. Strong with a citrusy cardamom kick and exceptionally dry amber. The coffee is alluded to at best. If I wear it sparingly I can detect individual notes such as cinnamon and vanilla. Best in Winter. Packaging is nice. ✨

Reminds me in feel of a more masculine Anné Pliska by Anné Pliska and I love them both and can imagine wearing them on alternate occasions or the Nicolaï for day and the Pliska for evening in the same period.

First impressions - good ingredients, lacks character. Light gourmand. Not too sweet, not too dry, not too much coffee, cardamome and patchouli. Safe scent. Gourmand and light version of Kokorico.

This is an *almost* for me; I'd switch out the coffee for tobacco and the raspberry for honey. Which I guess gives you Tobacolor. I find this comforting, and not exciting.

The beautiful name of this perfume refers to a kind of intercity resort, which existed a lot in ancient Iran and carried diverse local cultures.

After dry down become a copy of Little song by Meo Fusciuni..
