Rose Oud

A perfumery ode to Artemisia and Osmanthus, which together create invisible, wearable art. It opens with an Artemisia-infused raspberry at its juicy best. The Artemisia is a concoction only vaguely resembling the real thing in nature, which I'd describe as pungent and kind of medicinal... here we get all the best from this silvery herb and none of the apothecary sourness. About 7 minutes in the Osmanthus surges up; a delicious apricot-drenched flower with a slight suede-plushness perfectly balanced by the Artemisia/raspberry concoction. Sandalwood and ambery warmth radiate after 20 minutes, but its the green-chocolate patchouli which makes this perfume sing for me when combined with the Osmanthus and Artemisia. I don't get much of the rose or the oud apart from a general, deep woodiness but I'm not familiar with oud, so can't seperate it from the other notes in any perfume yet. I keep getting wafts of this gorgeous perfume for hours, without having to go looking for it on my skin. A gorgeous, complex, luxuriously plush perfume. Perfume Royalty If Jacques Geurlain is the King of Perfumery, then surely Patricia de Nicolai is the Queen. Not just because she is related to the Guerlain's, but because her style transports time. I have yet to come across a scent that she has made that I do not like, and many(including this one) I love. Better yet, many are masterpieces and define categories. New York Intense is one of the best classic masculine scents, Patchouli intense is also one of the best modern Patchouli scents. This Rose Oud is a little different than her other scents as it has more animalic nuances than others but the blending and quality showcases a perfumer that is in a class by herself. The smell itself has a slight resemblance to Mitsouko or possibly what Mitsouko used to smell like when it was mostly natural ingredients and more luxury than the current formulation from Geurlain but still as timeless as that masterpiece. The oud is real and kept in check, just like the rose and sweetness. The perfume itself is as smooth as it is well priced, well rounded and perfectly unisex. Long live the Queen. 4.65/5

This opens beautifully with sweet Rasberry and beautiful osmanthus which settles into a delightfully soft rose which is further sweetened by Lily of the valley. I love this perfume, it's classy, joyful and exuberant, the longevity is excellent and projection is also very good, a bit of a powerbomb IMO. The only thing that this perfume does not have is Oud. I don't care what it's called or what the notes say, Oud is about the only note that I can detect a mile away, but this perfume, beautiful as it is, does not have any oud in it according to my nose, so if Oud is not your favourite note, worry not and try it with wild abandon, but if you are expecting something remotely oud like, you will be dissapointed!

You have to love when someone votes for weak and intimate sillage, and then trashes the fragrance saying it’s « cloying » and « stuffy ». Make it make sense. And find a new hobby. Nicolai is obviously not for everyone.

Another gorgeous fragrance from Patricia de Nicolai. Every one I’ve purchased from this house so far (and I have a few) has been divine. Well priced too. It’s a love from me.

Trying on this perfume at the Nicolaï boutique numerous times has always resulted in a warm and luxurious, pleasantly dirty and erotic rose; animalic as other reviewers have described with notes of dried spit and genuine fur coats. I loved it. After purchasing a bottle, I have found the juice to react totally differently from a brand new bottle. The fruity rose is much more powerful and dainty for the first 15-20 minutes, with a cleanness coming from the delicate and unmistakable lily of the valley. It is only after the 30 minute mark or so that the oud and amber notes start to express themselves as if the rose is hot and sweating. Even then, the bright red rose is still ever prominent on my skin, and the same animalic notes that jumped at me at the boutique are a lot more restrained and mellow. The dry down is warm, soft, and powdery. This is a beautiful perfume that seems to be better suited to the colder months, but always remains charming and captivating whatever notes decide to show up on your skin.

Unlike for other voters here, I get very little projection from "Rose Oud" after the first hour, the staying power also wasn't what I hoped for - 4 hours if you don't count the other three you barely feel a thing. As for the scent itself, this is an unusual "Rose Oud" appereantly every company lately makes. This is extremely SKANKY. From the start I got overload of musk and castoreum and in fact very little oud. Rose was present - green, sour, well to say - with thorns. The combo was hard for the nose, but nevertheless I found it appealing as I've always enjoyed perfumes a bit on the dirty side. Unfortunately very, very soon it settles down to a somewhat boring sharp rose-musk combination that, as I mentioned before, fades away within 4 hours leaving a very, very faint trail of straight up feminine rose and clean musk. Dissapointing to say the least, after the heady skank opening I expected much more.

I like this, but I couldn’t say why if pressed on it. It’s not that memorable to me but it is pleasant and well rounded. I mainly smell musk and think of it as a musk fragrance, not Oud and although there is rose it’s wrapped in such a strong blanket of musk it’s very muted. I did smell a juicy citrusy raspberry on first spray but that was so brief it hardly merits a mention. What comes to mind when I think of this is Loves Baby Soft. Weird,I know.

The word "perfume" bottled. Iconic. Before I got into fragrances and someone talked about "perfumes" This is the smell I first think of. I grew up in the 80:s. And I think some ladies around me wore similar rose/woods/patchouli scents.

A bit too heavy of an oud on the dry down for me. If you want to smell like grandmas house in the forest.. this is for you.

A stuffy, cloying and powdery rose oud for grandma Hazel to wear with her Chanel costume that she bought in 1974.

I immediately have bought three (also beatiful) boxes of Rose-Oud and while with interest I read your account about the perfume, I may 'sense' it differently. I am a great lover, if not fanatic, of rose-oud perfumes and at first I had the feeling this perfume was so refined, that the oud was hidden. sometimes the oud comes on late... but here, with comparison of several Montales, Dusita's 'Oudh Infini', Ex Idolo's 'Thirty Three', Histoire de Parfums 'Al Oudh', Juliette has a Gun 'Midnight Oud' and Tierry de Gunsberg 'Terryfic Oud' and '-- Extreme', I have learned to wait and also have learned (Montale) the rose and oud are equally strong and have their departure together and interchangingly reciprocally interdependent. this is here the case I believe. what you immediately smell is this infernal duo rose and oud. the rose being the only flower that really goes in symbiosis with oud. the rose of course, already has woody aspects of its own ('Portrait of a Lady') and even thorny and rooty (P.O.a.L.) and the oud, there are so many ouds. if it is woody (Oud-al-Dehn [Hindi Oud]) then the woodiness is a veil dominating the perfume. if it is also flowery (Cambodian Oud) then this fleurage goes perfectly with the rose. this perfume is at once very deep and lasting (castoreum, like the civet in Dusita's 'Oud Infini' and castoreum in Tierry de Gunsberg's 'Terryfic Oud' ) these animalics give this perfume a boost and little reminiscence to the French Classics: 'Chanel No5', 'Balmain's Ivoire', Dior's 'Miss Dior' (1947 that is), YSL's 'Y' which is that marvelous and unforgettable but also inescapable Chypre. Jean Patou's JOY, but also Americans like Calvin Klein's 'Obsession' and Estée's 'Knowing'. and her 'families' ' Nahéma and Guet Apins et al. this perfume from Patricia de Nicolaii is from the start very chic and sophisticated. it definitely contains Oud (but of course not a kilogramme !), the best of roses, the osmanthus in a flower in supportive role; and this iron wrought base with vanilla, patchouli, amber, sandelwood and musc (which I can not smell). if you inhale deeply (a tric I learned myself) as if to almost choke on it, you get all kinds of notes (from the fysical contents) which otherwise evaporate in the 'rose-oud violence. she (Patricia) is a genius perfumer and really down-to-earth and chic.

This was a fun ride. I think the community will become fond of this one. I came for the Rose Oud concert but ended up being entertained by so many other notes. *Spoiler alert* No raspberry at all. In the beginning, all I got was about 30 seconds of rose. Then it went all downhill or uphill (depending on who you ask). At this point, the rose completely disappears into a cloud of musk and oud. Not for the faint of heart, this composition then morphs into something completely skanky and dirty. Like a rose growing from the concrete, the lily casts a brief shadow overlooking the valley of artemisia. Speaking of rose, it then makes an encore while being accompanied by something powdery. In closing, rose oud rides off into the sunset as a rosey oud fragrance. Weird. I don't think I ever experienced a fragrance that ended the way it began. Interesting to say the least...

Rose Oud is an opulent scent that has a decidedly vintage feel; an homage of sorts that reminds me of the great perfumes of the 1980's, but comfortable and confident in the modern era. A woman of classic beauty with a glass of champagne in her hand and diamonds around her neck. Could be worn by both sexes; that is, if you can rock it. The most prominent notes to my nose are, unsurprisingly, the rose, oud, castoreum, and that zingy raspberry, all of which work together to create a fizzy, bubbly, rosy, slightly animalic fragrance: innocent and naughty all at the same time! Perfect for weddings and celebrations that harken back to a simpler time when the parties were bigger and the booze was cheaper.

One of the softest ouds. In fact the rose note is also soft and comforting, slightly sweet/green with the 'feel' of depth underneath. The bold notes listed are surprising, yet their quality is evident. I'm not a huge lover of semi-soliflore rose scents, but this one has everything interesting about it. Not too much bitter or woody screech, but the most satisfying, gentle depth. A green patchouli gives the composition a good undergirding.You will have to employ your nose well to dissect and identify all it's hidden layers. Good longevity and fair sillage. I only tried this from a small vial, so it would seem even more pungent sprayed. Great in summer.

This is such a weird scent, I'm still not sure what to make of it. I don't hate it but I'm not sure that I want my actual body to smell this way. I barely detect the agarwood but smell the animalic "beaver butt" note quite clearly. Something about it reminds me of stick deodorant... maybe the type of amber accord used? However, your mileage may vary. The raspberry and osmanthus notes sweeten it up in a manner that also recalls a plastic toy from my childhood.

A very nice rose oud combo with a very low dose of civet? Here they say its castoreum. Castoreum makes the rose little mischievous and an absolute delight to wear. I found this to be different from other rose oud scents maybe due to wellblended castoreum. Sandal, amber, musk etc have been assigned smaller roles here. Little bit of Raspberry adds to the overall opulence of this perfume. In the overcrowded rose oud genre this one stands apart.

Rose oud is kind of nasty. someone who is naughty and nasty as i can smell that mid way oud and an animalic take sweetened by roses and NOT raspberries! Amber, sandalwood, & patchouli. I don't smell any animalic in here other than an Arabian style kind of oud! it kind of reminds me of "Calling All Angels" by April Aromatic but much lighter and tenderer way. It's quite a good take of Oud.

This is how I see an elegant lady at the opera in her mid 60's. I feel too youg for this scent. It's powdery and definitely a signature scent. Just not for me. I am surprised that it is a young scent. Could as well have been a classic which has been around for 40, 50 years. Like Roge'said - Interesting to say the least.

instantly give me headache and smell so synthetic but the dry down is good but the oud is a little bit to strong it's just not for everyone

All I smell on my skin is animalic note. No rose at all. Very different from what I expected.
