Vetyver

One of my all time favorite vetiver scents, of which i have a lot. :-) As usual with Nicolai, the quality is incredible and she manages to create an amazing scent from a classic library. We all think we know what to expect and yet she manages to surprise. Vetyver is a dry, spicy, strong, super classy vetiver scent. It lasts forever.

A wonderful warm vetiver. Far warmer than Guerlain's. As for longevity I can only say that I applied a moderate amount at 5.30 this morning and it is still clearly present at 9 PM.

The initial top note is a very light and bright citrus scent with petitgrain of limonum or aurantium, paired with a clear, fine, and not heavy pine needle aroma, presenting a distinct green quality. However, it's not a heavy grassy green; rather, it's more like mimicking the freshness of fresh grass, also giving a refreshing, bubbly feeling, like the surprising stimulation of sipping a sparkling beverage. It's not sweet, but rather crisp and sharp. The heart note transforms into a more spicy scent with a noticeable but not overpowering spiciness. However, the most discernible notes on me are cumin and clove buds. After a while, it transitions into a clean, dry woody scent. The spicy notes in the middle are handled beautifully, and I love them; it's like anisealdehyde and eugenol polished into a very light veil, like the mist drifting over a lake before dawn, gently descending like the afterglow of sunset. After a while on the skin, it transforms into a dry, hard woody scent. On the sample strip, the fragrance notes mention ylang-ylang. What I smelled wasn't the overpowering, sweet floral-fruity extra ylang-ylang, but rather the slightly somber, grassy scent that complete ylang-ylang EO typically possesses. This scent blends well with the small amount of oakmoss and vetiver, but also tones down the overly strong upward notes of cumin and clove buds, giving a restrained and masculine feel. Base Notes The note presents a delicate and comfortable pseudo-body scent. The musk here is like the lingering scent of soap after a shower, creating a warm and comforting aroma that blends seamlessly with the skin. Tonka bean and vanilla in the fragrance notes are presented here as a powdery scent mimicking a very light almond aroma, while the vanilla perfectly balances the almond powderiness of the tonka bean. It lacks a powdery feel, but possesses a clean body odor sometimes found on men. Overall, I personally feel that although this fragrance is named "Vetyver," its main focus is not a heavy, overpowering vetiver scent, but rather a woody, grounding quality created by the spices. This accord reminds me not so much of Eau d'Hermes as many people say, but rather of Terre d'Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche: there is a distinct, subtle yet present cumin aroma, but Nicolai's Vetyver flavor is not as pronounced in terms of citrus tartness, bitterness, and aquatic notes. I don't know if there will be an Eau de Parfum or intense version in the future, but I personally quite like the current Eau de Toilette version, especially in autumn and winter. Just spraying the perfume on the skin or in the room can give people a warm feeling.

Vetiver, cumin and aldehydes ... it was my first impression of this fragrance. I was expecting full of vetiver perfume with the classical earthy notes but fortunately I found this as extremely spicy and warm. All ingredients are very well balanced making it a vegetal and noble in the same time. It has the similar spirit as both the L’Autre by Diptyque and Eau D’Hermes by Hermes have, but it is a little airy in the same time. I’m cumin person so it is new wonderful discovery for me. Vetyver is rather linear. The beginning is a little citrusy but later on only spices are exposed. It last forever and its projection is at least good. I can recommend Vetyver for spicy fragrance lovers who likes a little dirty bastards :-).

PdN's Vetyver is a spice market, dressed up with a bit of ylang-ylang, sitting on a slice of vetiver. At first, the florals hit you, then quickly transition into the spicy heart of pepper, lemony coriander, and cumin (NOT CARAWAY!). The vetiver is subtly anchoring the spices underneath with an earthy, rubbery base. Vetiver isn't the predominant element here, so naming the fragrance after it doesn't seem quite right. It's more along the lines of a very slightly floral Yatagan than a Tom Ford or Etro dry Vetiver, or Guerlain's soapy-spicy version. After a while, it fades into a vaguely woody-spicy base reminiscent of Dior's Dune pour Homme.
