Phileas

Phileas ("FIL" + "ee" + "uhs", as in Phileas Fogg of Jules Verne's 1873 novel "Around the World in 80 Days", note the fabled balloon on the box) begins with a Campari aperitif tartness coupled with the most heavenly juniper berry I've ever experienced in a fragrance, piney-piquant, mushroomy-cool, crisp-cool-breeze bright. There is also the suggestion of lime to my nose—so invigorating and enduring. It grows more wormwood-like and coniferous and dense as the top notes descend, green sticky resins, and a pine straw tawny underline. Then comes impressions of celery seed, a spiced melange and dried rustic herbs: more vigor! Furthermore, I am reminded of the aroma of crushed cypress needles. Its vegetal and evergreen qualities are reined in by labdanum and vetiver, rendering Phileas dirtier and earthier, echoing that of Yatagan and Devin, yet with Phileas, there is further suspense. It smells like a foggy damp forest floor after a long rain, the saturation, the foliage and mud. It traverses through dry to wet and sharp to round in the course of its development. It really does achieve the effect of Phileas' journey: but none of it is too pretty and elemental. What a concept that was destined for commercial failure but has won the hearts of diehard fragrance enthusiasts. It was produced only until the 90s and one must either spend a great deal for any sizable quantity or wait, and wait, and wait, for that one phenomenal deal to surface, and then snatch it with an accelerated heartbeat.

Phileas is one of those extinct super male dinosaurs of the decade of the 80. Bitter, strange opening, citrus with aldehydes, a sweet, waxy touch and an aromatic point, juniper berries that produce that bitterness, it seems a swirl of wind that uncontrolls the aroma, but when that wind begins to calm down and the fragrance is centered, The aroma recovers, it becomes complex, the carnation and the spices like cinnamon arise, give warmth, sensuality, pine takes over the aroma, it becomes drier, leather, tobacco and cedar are subtle but they fill with masculinity He tells Phileas. A dry oak moss sets the aroma to the classic and gives an excellent duration. Phileas is very masculine, the aroma tremendous to pine, the woods, the leather and the tobacco they grant it. Drying of oak moss is the rubrica. Still, the strange thing that Phileas has that makes it special and different from other peers of its time is that delicate floral-aldehyde aroma that is latent at all times, it seems that it is not, but it never disappears. Phileas might look rough and rough like a week-old unshaven beard on a furry, angular, strong, closed face, yet it's all appearance. Under that roughness one feels the softness, the delicacy and a lot of class. Rating: 8.5

This is a rare gem! A sadly discontinued fragrance of immense beauty. Phileas is quite a complex composition that opens with a considerable amount of aldehydes, citruses and juniper for an overall effect that is at the same time stark, freshly-green and almost powdery/soapy. Patchouli rapidly makes its appearance joined by other spices (a light cinnamon), coniferous notes, leather and tobacco. In this phase Phileas reaches its peak of beauty with its perfect balance between the classic powerhouse style and an incredibly sophisticated elegance. In the drydown I get a lot of resinous notes (labdanum), pine (again), and a subtle cedarwood laying on a slightly metallic amber. Compelling and unique. This is a very hard to find fragrance, so if you're lucky enough to find it, don't miss the chance to get it. Complex and definitely overlooked. A masterpiece Rating: 9/10

Original EDT 10 ml bottle - The bottle is lovely, weighty, simple and classy. The bottom is embossed with all the information, and the name is in gold on the shoulder discreetly, so need for those pesky... oh so how shall we say....middle class... labels.... A deep straw colour tinged with a faint green tone, the light is pretty going through the bevelled glass. Now rushing to dump more on my arm after I just gave it an eye opening very first sniff. Wow, this is a toe curling Mediterranean sea-ed, cedar treed, pine-forested, camping trip, with the Head Cheerleader. Freshness, fun, fires, laughter, and fresh cotton sleeping bags. This cologne is making me cry. It is just beautiful. Nina ́s best. Beseeching the Perfume Gods to please bring it back. It is like what would happen to another top cologne, if it went to the finest Swiss Finishing School.

Named for Phileas Fogg, the hero of Jules Verne's 1873 novel "Around the World in 80 Days" (played by David Niven in the classic 1956 film), the intent was to create a fragrance using ingredients from all six continents (since nothing much grows in Antarctica, only the other six were included.) The ingredient list is complex, but the overall effect is classy and refined, and tends more toward the dry herbal than the sweet balsamic Orientals. There is something elegantly Victorian about it, yet modern as well. It might be the perfect fragrance for Steampunks, since it styles itself as a bridge between the antique and the modern.

my 200 ml splash bottle, no bar code box, arrived today and wow! even though this was apparently released in 1984, it reminds what i loved about men's fragrances some 50 years ago and what was so intriguing. lots of different notes most of which i cannot tease out from the heady blend. despite the melange, it is surprisingly light in impact. the bitter citrus works its charm on my mind, apertif like. vintage sweet vermouth. this could have been created by monks in some secluded monastery and amped up to sybaritic heights. as charming as a jules verne adventure read in a book with lush illustrations.

Green, spicy, warm, fresh! I find a pine tree needles accord surprisingly elegant and invigorating. This is a truly adventurous and energetic perfume, the same time enveloping and spreading a beautiful sillage. I don't find it old-fashioned. If it was the house of Caron or Chanel, they could still have it in production. Unfortunately, Nina Ricci owners are not interested in their heritage.

This is very good juice. I had a chance to buy a big bottle at a very much below market price, I passed, and I regret it to this day. Phileas is definitely in the neighborhood of Punjab, Yatagan, and maybe 12 (Jean Couturier). Pretty much spicy-woody, and "soapy," in this case, comes to mind. Recommend with a caveat if you already own the beforementioned.

Nina Ricci's Phileas was a really unique fragrance. So much so that I don't really know what to compare it with, or how to describe it accurately. Herbal/herbaceous chypre, I guess. But not a "green" herbal, if that makes any sense. It's actually quite complex, at times soapy, then spicy, then mossy... I loved it to bits in the eighties, and I still do.

Very similar to Yatagan, yes, but has his own values and personality. And it's a terrible badass. Bold, completely bold, cause of the strong animalic note. I think this one has a more dared fecal note, absolutely well blended with the well known celery, oakmoss, and all that magic combo. The most unpolite fragrance I have.Masterpiece. 10/10.

For a couple of years in the mid1980s this was my favourite EdT. Its arrival broke new ground and opened a whole new experience for men. Like others here, it has massive memories for me, and its passing is greatly lamented. I cant believe this couldn't find a huge following today. Aghhhh! I do miss it.

really super, timeless aromatic chypre. crosses several boxes, incorporating vibes of yatagan, aramis 900, original polo and the original calvin klein. the drydown is rich & exquisite, radiating a coniferous warmth that makes everything ok! so very grateful to my good pal colin for introducing me!

I loved this fragrance. I bought it in the '80's at the souk in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates on a business trip. I remember a wonderful burst of citrus backed by spice and musk. I thought it very sophisticated.

This is lovely IMO, rather unique smell, a little bit of Aramis Tuscany in there but not the same. Maybe also a little bit of old Quorum, not today ́s formulation. 9/10

A wonderful fragrance, I first met this fragrance circa 1994, got my first bottle. Recently my boyfriend got me one in ebay. One of my favourites.

This still is one of my alltime favorites! With leather notes being popular now, it would be perfect if Ricci reissued this fantastic scent!!

Phileas was a true masterpiece now discontinued by ricci??? Such a silly decision! Puig Ricci got to bring back Phileas in the market!

My first one and such a masterpiece!

I heard this was like one of my favorites, Yatogan. So I ordered a couple minis. Yes it is like Yatogan, but even smoother warmer. I'm surprised it took me so long to discover this great classic, it seems to be a woody chypre rather than an oriental. Juniper berries and pine are some of my favorite coniferous notes, and they are blended so well here, not like some other power house piney scents from the 80's. This is as good as vintage Z-14 or Yatogan. This fragrance has silky smooth woods, balsams, spices, and so well blended. The leather ads richness, and classiness, a gentleman's fragrance. I don't have the vintage, it must realy be awesome, because what I have is still quite fine... I have never tried vintage Bel Ami by Hermes, but I would imagine this is in the ballpark with Bel Ami, but the leather note is much less prominent with Phileas. It has the best richest Amber/ Labdanum of any old classic fragrance I'v tried. Rating: 8/10

Accidentaly found a vintage bottle of this.Its before 1990 because it doesnt have bar code on the box. When i open it the juise was dark and afraid that had passed away but after trying it discovered something very unique.Something between vintage Caron Yatagan and vintage Puig Quorum. It has a very strong celery note that dominates the whole composition but its a complex composition.I feel happy to have this in my collection

Another one of my top twenty , Phileas is another masterpeice , resinous , coniferous , herbal & much much more its just incredible ! Yatagan shares some similiarities but side by side is very different , unique bold & simply outstanding they will never be another Phileas >> >> pronose even if they did release it again ... it would only be a pale shadow of what it is now

Unfortunately, I can't get my man to wear this, he is more inclined to sweet perfumes. I like the dry down. It's very spicy, almost smokey. I've had two people tell me it reminds them of the incense in a Greek Orthodox church! It's very vintage, but it can still work today on a bold man!
