Fantôme de Forêt

The first note of Fantôme de Forêt (Forest Ghost) is fire-crisped artisanal marshmallow, true to the intended torched vanilla, Then, something more delicious: a spectral performance of the ginger lily, here a delicate parlor floral, carrying sub-scents of translucent citric spice on curled petals to the nose. The transitions between notes render beautifully, a sensation of being between two worlds separated by a faint veil. Vanilla reemerges, this time a milky smoke, fluffy and shy, hovering on a bed of soft fragrant woods. Pale descriptions of the woodgrain whispered for the nose by phantoms. Atmospheric white copal does a skeleton dance in the fog. It's gorgeous, soothing, sensual, transcendent, and haunting me sweetly. Like following a troupe of benevolent ghosts on a romp through an ancient forest, grown in clouds.

I've been looking for a vanilla perfume like this! Don't be scared off by "forest" in the name, if, like me, that sets your expectations towards something more dark or green. Artisanal marshmallow is correct: A gooey, warm marshmallow with vanilla flecks, instead of the puffy, fresh out of the bag variety. Unlike Petit Gateau, however, I would say this is not so much a literal gourmand. It is just sweet enough, and the restraint used in the salt and smokiness manage to add depth rather than change its character. While I would say it is relatively linear, a little more of the clean wood comes out after a few hours of wear. At this phase, it begins to remind me of AG Mod Vanilla; albeit a gentler, higher-end version. Very headache-safe so far. Moody and contemplative yet fun and sweet.

I may need give this more time..but it truly smells like diet ginger ale on me. Then the softness of the mid feels slightly woody with a touch of sweetness. I can see the vision here and it’s beautiful. But it needs some work. Unfortunately after an hour I literally have to stuff my nose to my arm to smell it. The copal and incense with a touch of sweetness is beautiful, but non existent. I’ll update if it changes

Finally had a chance to try this through a lovely soul on reddit! So grateful. Anyways, Fantôme de Forêt reminds me of the beautiful mahogany of my guitar. I can see myself after finishing a set at an autumnal bonfire, now having a delicious treat sticky on my fingers instead of the fretboard. There’s a mystical tension in the air...the wood popping, the woodsmoke dancing, and the flames licking the night stars and then the quarter-moon. It begins salty and dry, but soon dissolves into something sweet, soft, and fluffy. A tulle skirt and a leather jacket. Copal, marshmallow, and wood are the most noticeable here, however the tobacco blossom does remind me of the similar but more hay-focused scent, Erawan. Perfect for throwing on your favorite show to enjoy around the Equinox—Twin Peaks, Buffy, X-Files, or Supernatural—or going out at night to summon chaos with the friends you’re the fondest of.
