Bay Rum

Why do people dislike this? It's amazing! It's warm, deep, spicy and aromatic with a boozy, honeyed feel. I detect bay and laurel, rum and cinnamon. Cloves are quite present, and also this honey like sweetness. What's not to like? This scent conjures up pictures of Haiti, voodoo rituals, caribbean islands and powerful priestesses in my head. I picture Tia Dalma (Pirates of the Caribbean) wearing something like this. It's a mighty, mysterious and witchy kind of smell. Feels quite intoxicating. The sillage is medium to strong, depending on how much you spray on. And longevity is very good, about 8-10 hours on my skin. So full bottle worthy! I'll probably get a 30ml of this during the upcoming month. :)

I love this while it lasts. The opening is sweet and spicy as described in the notes. The clove (not pictured above) and allspice are strong with cinnamon and bay in supporting roles. It's all tied together with the sweet rum. For me they combine to make this delicious prickly, savory smell that I love. It's not quite butterscotch, but it's something in that neighborhood. I even imagine a whiff of butterfat sometimes, or maybe even popcorn. Unfortunately, that intense part goes away within an hour or two. I'm sniffing my wrist now after 4 hours, and it's just barely there. It does seem to stick around a little better on my shirt though.

A fabulous winter and fall scent. The longevity seems mild, but comes and goes in waves. It is heavy on the cloves.

This is less boozy and more spicy than I was expecting. If you like cloves you will really like this.

I have recently bought a giant bottle of Pinaud Virgin Bay Rum to enjoy this staple gentlemen barbershop smell. So when sampling Olympic Orchids perfumes, I felt like comparing this inexpensive classic with a more niche take on the genre will be a good idea. And I was not disappointed. Pinaud's version is much sweeter, centered on cloves (heaps of cloves) and cinnamon. My partner says it smells like apple compote (which it really does). Ellen's take is much more an allspice and bay experience. Less sweet, rather medicinal, camphorous, but still very captivating and beautiful. I like it a lot. Performance is better than Pinaud, but not really great. However given the light character of notes, that is understandable. As someone who avoids sweetness in perfumes whenever possible, I would give it a preference over Pinaud, were it not for different purpose that splash aftershave and perfume have. Therefore I will stick with Pinaud that is a great tool for the job to keep your skin fresh after a good shave. If you want to try something more complex and clever, yet still very affordable at niche quality that it carries, give Bay Rum a chance;-)

Well, all I can say from my sample is this: if you liked Royall Bay Rhum but found it a bit fleeting with weak staying power, then you'd love OO Bay Rum. This is a delightfully simple and fresh bay leaf based fragrance with a nice semi-sweet floral rum and clove quality about it. Someone said it smells like cheap rum... and I could see that it might make that fleeting impression if there was no cloves. But honestly, your mind can tie in associations from distant memories to distort what you experience. You need to let fragrances like these macerate with your olfactory palate. Only then can you get a TRUE and useful impression of them.

I have fond memories of splashing on my grandads Pinaud Bay Rum and this version of that fragrance profile immediately took me back to those times. An excellent spicy opening. The drydown in this one is better than that cheapie though, the rum feels almost like a buttered rum and the spices are smoothed out (the laurel and all spice pops most for me). This isn’t a fragrance I would wear a lot, but I’ll likely grab one of the smaller bottles of this at some point.

I don't get the bad reviews. It's a truly realistic (not cheap smelling) spicy rum perfume. Like fresh rum in your face with some spices. I can smell the bay leave and cloves. Simple but beautiful. And it's quite long lasting. For a man.

Agreeable and even pretty blend of spices, but on a watery base that does not give them the warmth that would make this a great fragrance

Photorealistic cloves, pimento berries and bay leaf. That's it. Very linear. A great spicy 'utilitarian' fragrance, if that's what you're looking for, but not a multi-levelled or unique fragrance like I would expect from an indie house. Had I to pick a fragrance in that dept, I would probably look towards Lorenzo Villoresi, like for example Piper Nigrum or Spezie, which are both more interesting, imho.

174) Frankenmeister Oh mes aïeux, c'est monstrueux. Je ne sais même pas rester à côté de l'échantillon papier tellement c'est répulsif. Je crois être quelqu'un de très ouvert sur les expériences olfactives les plus insupportables pour la majorité mais la c'est inimaginable. On dirait l'odeur de plantes qu'on aurait laissées moisir des semaines dans un tonneau puis recouvert d'alcool de pharmacie. Une sorte de moisisure végétale macérée, un Jagermeister expérimental à partir de déchet de jardin et de clou de girofle. Oh my ancestors, it is monstrous. I can not even stand next to the sample paper so it is repellent. I think I am very open on the most unbearable olfactory experiences but this is unimaginable. Looks like the smell of rotting plants that have left behind for weeks in a barrel and covered with pharmaceutical alcohol . A kind of vegetable moisisure macerated, an experimental Jagermeister made from garden waste and clove . I have to say that it's verry well composed, super long lasting and with a good sillage, but I'll kill you if you get closer.

I bought a discovery set of OO perfumes but unfortunately they all start to smell alike in some ways after trying a few of them. Anyway, this starts up extremely sweet, warm, spicy, mildly boozy and strong. A strange menthol-like medicinal note also screams in every direction. Peppery spice drapes a gossamer veil over the overpowering sweetness. There is an extremely green note in there as well, probably the bay leaves or laurels. The dry down is ambery, sweet, oddly synthetic. No thank you.

This one is not for me. It smels like I put my hand in a barrel of cheap rum. and what I detect more are spices I use to make a stew. And the worse part is I can't wash it off, it lasts and lasts

Boozy spice monster, this scent wears you and not the other way around. For the right chemistry? Possibly.

This burns my skin, so beware, the spice in this is strong.

This is good quality, but i personally hate this. I usually like the bay rum DNA, in fact for me bay rum fragrances are usually kind of just an easy win- and i was completely fine hearing this was very clove forward. But- accenting the clove, in a way that blends in with the note- is what i interpret as a skittles-y accord from the orange blossom (reminds me of the same overly sweet way its used in love dont be shy by kilian) and then with an almost raisin-y edge. Not resin-y, raisin-y. In one way i see how someone would feel like this complements the clove as it adds this sharp realistic tone to it- it smells like ground clove powder is right in front of you- and then some...and by ‘and then some’ i mean it ends up missing the target and morphing a little into something else uncomplimentary too. it does so in an overbearing way, and then the skittles-y sweet inflection from the orange blossom sticks out monstrously in the mix for me. Im not someone who hates sweetness in fragrances at all, but i dont feel like this is a well done sweetness, and it gives me a visceral negative reaction personally. I would have found this to be pretty good without the orange blossom but that element completely derails it for me. But it wont for everyone, im sure many people might find that it actually makes this more palatable for them than other bay rum fragrances even (in fact if you want something like love dont be shy with an added helping of cloves, try this out), and even if its not to my taste something about it feels like it would shine in a Caribbean type of environment like bay run was originally meant to. I dont find this boozy at all personally.

Bay Rum by Olympic Orchids Artisan Perfumes- I liked this one. Cloves stands out strongly in this as well as Cinnamon, Allspice, Bay and Rum. The other notes linger faintly with the resins keeping the aroma moist and damp. This is an Autumn fragrance and did not feel right in this month of July. It was all wrong for summer, but come Autumn this will be fantastic. It's also a great Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday fragrance, But it will be having intense competition with Mum's and Grand Ma-mah's cooking and no one will notice that you are wearing it, they'll think they are smelling the cooking instead of your fragrance. This is a very Gourmand perfume, for you foodie fragrance fans. The rum boozes this up and adds a party note to the sweet, dessert-like fragrance. Longevity was 12 hours, Sillage was medium. Season is strictly Autumn. I approve of this one, great fragrance, warm and spicy. Applause for Bay Rum. Thank you Moonsparrow.

I have not had any experience with other Bay Rum fragrances to give a comparison, but what I can say is 'WOW'. If this is what men of my great grandpa's era smelled of leaving the barbershop, then I need a time travel machine! As usual, Olympic Orchids does not disappoint. The fine balance of bay, forest,& cinnamon/cloves is gently sweet and gorgeously spicy-aromatic. I could smell this in candles, bath salts, soap, and wax melts and not tire of it for days on end. In other words, wonderful..... And oh-so manly in the best domestic, friendly, yet virile sort of way. THAT good!

This is really nice and I would think unhateable but I forgot how much people hate medicinal scents. I didn’t realize it until a Jamaican coworker told me it reminds her of the balm her family uses to apply on wounds. She loved it so much tho bc it was nostalgic she kept my sample and eventually bought a whole bottle lol. Thankfully she decanted me some to give back and I love this smell especially for layering. I have some creamy florals that this exotifies really well. And that’s just what this is an exotic spicy healing balm. How could I not like that !?
